"The trip was a great experience for everybody," Cleveland said. "It was a great basketball trip but more importantly, it was a very positive trip for our players off the court. They were able to meet and interact with many people from other backgrounds and gain respect for their cultures. The experience also heightened everyone's appreciation for our own culture." On the court, the Cougars benefitted from two weeks of pre-tour practice allowed by the NCAA. The team chemistry that developed on the trip was also a big plus to the trip. Returned missionaries Eric Nielsen and Matt Montague joined seven returners from last year's team - Mekeli Wesley, Michael Vranes, Todd Christensen, Nathan Cooper, Silester Rivers, Bret Jepsen and Mark Michaelis - on the trip and according to Cleveland enjoyed an outstanding camaraderie both as individuals and as a team unit. Newcomers Luke Staley and Naufahu Tahi are finally getting over the injuries that have pestered them throughout fall camp, and at Tuesday night's scrimmage, they gave BYU fans a glimpse of the future. The two combined on 18 carries for 110 yards and three touchdowns on a night when the coaches didn't really know what to expect. "It's been my goal all my life," Feterik said. One major hurdle that Feterik has to overcome is the size and strength issue, and he realizes it. "Obviously I don't fit the size bill. But if you can play, that's what it comes down to. That's why I'm always rooting for small guys like Cade McNown, Doug Flutie or Jeff Blake." ===================================================== Retire? For years now, a common topic of conversation among BYU faithful has been the date of LaVell Edward's retirement. When asked if he has a general idea as to when he might step down, the coach said, "I really don't know (when I'll quit)." Never having been one to invite attention, he went on to say, "But when I do know, nobody is going to know till after the season's over." In other words, he doesn't want a big deal made out of it each week as he coaches his last game in such-and-such a stadium. At 69 years old, thoughts of retirement have obviously entered Coach Edwards' mind, but they usually get pushed aside by his enthusiasm for his work. "There have been a few times during the last four or five years when I thought this might be enough," he says. "Then the next thing I know the season's over, and I'm out recruiting. I thought a long time ago that when I hate recruiting, then it would be time to hang it up. It's been a couple of months since Rondo Fehlberg stepped down as BYU's athletic director, and he's managed to stay pretty inconspicuous during that time. He is still around, though, and is still a BYU fanatic, and is still engaged in the goings-on of the school's athletic department. "We are using him in a lot of various things," said Val Hale, Fehlberg's successor as AD. Fehlberg and his family intend to remain in Utah Valley, and he is currently employed by an Internet service provider based in Springville. Being close by makes it easy for him to remain a part of the Y's athletics. One of his duties this coming week will be to serve as host to UW officials in the pressbox at Thursday's game. "I still view myself as part of the fabric of BYU," Fehlberg said. That's not the way it turned out, however. With BYU short on experience in the offensive backfield, Staley will be called upon to make an immediate impact. It would appear that he has the ability; as a high school senior last year, he racked up 2,052 yards in 13 games. The past eight months have been a long road back to Provo and BYU for Heshimu Robertson. After being dismissed from school for an honor code infraction, the starting cornerback vowed that he would return to the school and the team. The fact that he wasn't able to play in the Liberty Bowl hit him especially hard. "It was hard. Mentally it was tough," said Robertson. "I didn't watch the game. If I had, I probably would have cried." Robertson's counterpart, Brian Gray, had his own problems that caused some to wonder if he would be suiting up for the Cougs this fall. Gray's winter semester grades were somewhat less than stellar, and it took some serious bookworming over the summer for him to be eligible to play this fall. With the duo back, the rest of the defense can keep preparing for their meeting with the University of Washington. It appears that the UW Huskies are very much aware of his presence, and aren't taking him lightly. They know that they have to somehow stop the monster that had 14 tackles (including five behind the line of scrimmage) against them last year. Morris won't let others' plans worry him. After dropping a close conference championship game, the team lost two key players in Ronney Jenkins and Heshimu Robertson and flailed without them in the Liberty Bowl. Then over the summer, running back Junior Mahe also left school for personal reasons, followed by quarterbacks Drew Miller and Kevin Gilbride, Jr., tackle John Tait and wide receiver Mike Rigell. Now the Cougs finally have the chance to get back out on the field and make up for all that's gone wrong. Fortunately, they plan on doing exactly that. Rob Morris, who for a short while considered following his buddy Tait out of school a year early to enter the NFL draft, said, "I didn't stay to improve my draft status. The Cougars split their first two matches of the tournament yesterday, losing to Michigan 15-13, 15-10, 15-13 before bouncing back and defeating host Georgia. Despite the extraordinary play of Puikkonen, the Cougar offense was balanced as five Cougars had 10 or more kills and the team finished with a .456 hitting percentage for the match. The win improves the Cougars=92 record to 2-1 overall. BYU's streak of 24 non-losing seasons is second only to Nebraska, whereas Washington is tied with Florida State for third with 22 non-losing seasons in a row. The ESPN broadcast could be a good omen for the Cougs, as they have won their past three Thursday night ESPN games. Following the Liberty Bowl loss to Tulane on New Year's Eve last year, the Cougar coaching staff tinkered with the offense, and implemented a scheme that will rely on the shotgun to give Kevin Feterik some extra time to read the defense. It will be a more pass-oriented attack, which comes at a good time, since BYU returns several experienced receivers, and is breaking in young running backs. The Cougar defense returns a strong group of key players from last year's fifth ranked squad. Although only four full-time starters return (Morris, Frisch, Gray, Robertson), almost every other spot will be covered by players that saw significant action last season. The unit as a whole should once again be powerful, but can't afford many injuries because of lack of depth. Washington kicks off what Sports Illustrated calls the toughest schedule of the season on Thursday night under new head coach Rick Neuheisel. The 38-year is no stranger to BYU, having played against the Cougars when he was a quarterback and assistant coach at UCLA in the 1980's. In 1995, Neuheisel became the head coach at Colorado, leading the Buffaloes to a 33-14 record over a four year span. His team in Boulder went 4-0 in season openers. With a very different type of quarterback than last year's Brock Huard, the offense is implementing a new scheme that will allow Marques Tuiasosopo to scramble and create on the run. Like BYU, Washington will be trying out some promising, but young running backs. Also like BYU, the Huskies will be breaking in some new offensive linemen, and honestly, they haven't looked good in fall drills. The Husky defensive front seven has received mixed reviews, and it remains to be seen how they will adapt to a 3-4 package that is different than the traditional Washington pressure packages that featured eight-man fronts. The defensive backfield has been pointed to as the weakest link of the team, which isn't good news for Husky fans if BYU attacks with its wideouts. The team's depth, especially on defense, could be a problem if the Huskies suffer injuries. ========================================================== Pre-Game Activities ========================================================== KSL is hosting a pre-game tailgate party in Cougar Stadium's parking lot before the kickoff. Also, the women's soccer team will be hosting the University of Wisconsin at Hawes Field at 5 p.m. Drop by and show your support as they continue their undefeated season! ========================================================== Implications ========================================================== BYU kicks off an exciting home schedule with a perennial PAC-10 powerhouse. The Cougars have been unable to beat the Huskies since their initial meeting in 1985, having dropped the four contests since. This year is the final scheduled meeting between the two teams, and a win would be the perfect way for the Y to rid itself of the bad taste left by some "if only" losses during the past three years. A victory would probably boost the Cougars into the top 25, as they have been just outside of being ranked so far this year. Washington is trying to re-establish itself after a disappointing 6-6 campaign in 1998. This game should indicate how they're coming along, and could set the tone for the rest of their season. Besides playing for themselves tomorrow night, the Huskies will be trying to win for conference pride. So far this year, the PAC-10 is off to a slow start, having been dealt big blows such as Arizona's 41-7 loss to Penn State, Stanford's 69-17 loss to Texas, and Washington State's 27-7 loss to Utah. A loss to BYU would add to that rough beginning. ========================================================== Players to Watch ========================================================== BYU #7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- After having led the WAC in pass efficiency as a junior, his experience is a huge asset for the Cougars, especially this early in the season. This afternoon, a banquet will be held at the BYU Alumni House to honor 80-year old Floyd Johnson, who has been the BYU equipment manager for more than four decades. The impact he has had on the athletic program, as well as the athletes themselves, has been almost immeasurable. Johnson has developed several innovative ideas that have come to be the norm in the world of sports. More importantly, however, he has touched the lives of thousands of athletes. "Everybody loves him," says Jason Buck, the former Outland Trophy winner. "He's as nice a man as you'll ever meet." "He has been like a second father to hundreds of athletes," LaVell Edwards once observed. For the last few years, Mr. Johnson has filled his post on a volunteer basis, without pay. Hale, a freshman and son of BYU athletic director Val Hale, scored the winner on his first varsity catch. The Cougars held off a final challenge after the Huskies reached the BYU 12 with 9 seconds to play. Marques Tuiasosopo was sacked by Byron Frisch with five seconds left and Tuiasosopo threw out of the end zone on the game's final play. The victory spoiled Rick Neuheisel's debut as coach of the Huskies, and afterward hundreds of BYU students swarmed the field to celebrate. BYU led 27-14 after freshman Luke Staley scored his second touchdown of the third quarter on an 11-yard run with 3:16 left in the period. At that point, the Washington offense had crossed midfield once. Despite being known for his offensive ingenuity, Neuheisel was unable to figure out the BYU defense until late in the game, when the Huskies scored 14 points off Cougar turnovers. Tuiasosopo twice scored on short runs, the second of which came with 5:04 left, and gave Washington a 28-27 lead. That's when Feterik assembled a drive to rival any of BYU's storied quarterbacks, completing dump passes for 14- and 17-yard gains, then finding Horton on a 12-yard throw to midfield. Feterik, a senior, had been criticized by BYU fans for a perceived inability to deliver in big situations, but his 38-yard game-winner to Hale rivaled the accomplishments of storied Cougars quarterbacks of the past. In both 1997 and 1998, early losses kept the Cougs just out of the rankings, but now that has changed. After last Thursday's impressive outing against Washington, BYU is ranked 25th in the nation. While quarterback Kevin Feterik acknowledges that it's good to be ranked, he says that one game doesn't make the whole season. "It's so unpredictable. There's still a lot of football left to play. Obviously, we want to be ranked," Feterik said of the early honor. An MRI has confirmed that his starting middle linebacker Ula Tuitele suffered a strained patellar tendon. He is not expected to play tonight. Star running back Kevin McDougal is also questionable, having strained a muscle in his upper left leg. The senior fullback is the nation's sixth-leading rusher, averaging nearly 170 yards per game. "Kevin and Ula are two major concerns," Lubick said. "Ula is barely walking. Kevin's injury will really go right down to game time. Derek Dawes and Garner Meads are both ranked as some of the top post player prospects in the nation, and both are considering playing for the Cougars. Jesse Pinegar, the top ranked center in the west, has avoided most of the attention that his two counterparts are receiving because he has already verbally committed to the Y. Meads has narrowed his choices to Utah, Stanford and BYU, whereas Dawes says he is leaning toward BYU, with Ohio State a close second, and ASU, SDSU and Auburn also in the mix. The attention that comes with being recruited has its perks. As always, BYU football head coach LaVell Edwards says that he will continue to coach as long as he enjoys it. Sooner or later, however, the 69-year old will step down, and when that time comes, there will be some big shoes to fill. "It's the most important decision that will be made by a BYU athletic administrator for the next 20 years," said athletic director Val Hale. School officials are keeping tabs on several different candidates for the job, but they realize that not just anybody can take over. "We want another LaVell," said BYU President Merrill J. Bateman. "We want someone who can recruit, who can internalize within himself church standards. We want a football genius on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball." Numerous records fell as the BYU offense marched up and down the field, and when all the dust settled, a few Cougars found themselves ranked highly in national statistics. Kevin Feterik leads the nation in total offense, Margin Hooks is the 9th ranked receiver, and Lucas Staley is tied for 16th in scoring. The offensive line did a fine job last week, but will need to do even better this week. The CSU front seven got to Colorado's Mike Moschetti nine times in their season opener. On the other side of the ball, the CSU offense has yet to give up a sack. One other area in which the Rams outclass the Cougars so far is turnovers. CSU opponents have coughed up the ball eight times this year, and the Rams have turned those eight takeaways into 41 points. BYU lost two fumbles and an interception against Washington. After spending the night trying to corral Marques Tuiasosopo last week, the Cougar defense is geared up to play against a more traditional offensive attack. CSU's strength this year has been running the ball, which plays into one of BYU's greatest strengths, which is rush defense. Colorado State has shown that they can put points on the board this season. However, the team that narrowly escaped with a 38-33 victory over Nevada last weekend didn't seem to be the same team that trounced then #14 Colorado 41-14 in its opening week's action. A couple of key players for CSU were injured in the Nevada game. Ula Tuitele, the Rams' star linebacker, suffered a strained patellar tendon in his right knee, and will not play tonight. An even bigger blow for the Rams is the fact that Kevin McDougal, the sixth leading rusher in the nation, is suffering from a strained adductor muscle in his upper left leg. His ability to play will be evaluated right up until game time. ================================= Pre-Game Activities ================================= Because this will be the first-ever Mountain West Conference game, MWC hats will be given out to the first 8,000 fans to arrive to the game. ================================= Implications ================================= BYU puts its seven-game home winning streak on the line against the #23 Rams. The Cougars will also be going for their fifth consecutive win in Thursday night ESPN games. The prime-time matchup between two ranked teams is a dream come true for ESPN and Mountain West officials, and it will be for the Y as long as they win. Colorado State realizes that the winner of this game may be in the drivers seat for the conference championship, whereas the loser will have to make upground all season long. Revenge is also somewhat of a factor. After winning the WAC in 1994, CSU was climbing the national rankings and getting a lot of attention in 1995 until BYU derailed them in their bid for a second consecutive conference championship. ================================= Players to Watch ================================= BYU #3, Brian Gray (CB) -- The "Gray Death" will be asked to help contain an offense that passed for 312 yards last weekend. #5, Jonathan Pittman (WR) -- The newcomer fit right in to BYU's offense last week, snagging five balls for 71 yards. #7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- He's coming off of an absolutely huge performance versus Washington. However, during his record-setting night, he got banged up a little bit -- his throwing arm was sore and swollen following the game. If he can play every game like he did against UW, we're in for a very special season. #26, Lucas Staley (RB) -- This true freshman accounted for over half of BYU's rushing total against Washington, scoring two touchdowns, and showed an exciting combination of speed and strength. Colorado State #6, Rick Crowell (LB) -- This Butkus award candidate had double-digit tackles in the Nevada game, and will be fired up to show a national audience what he can do. #10, Deone Horinek (P) -- Of his ten punts this year, nine have been returned or downed inside the opponents' 20 yard line. He's third on CSU's all-time punt average list. #15, Matt Newton (QB) -- This 6'3" junior has completed 33 of 52 passes this season, including four for touchdowns. #25, Frank Rice (WR) -- Although the ball is thrown in his direction somewhat sparingly, Rice can be lethal when he gets his hands on it. Of his 17 career catches, seven have been for touchdowns. He's scored two touchdowns on three catches this year. ================================= Records to Watch ================================= BYU holds the current NCAA record of 301 consecutive games without being shut out. ================================= Injury Report ================================= BYU Mike Nielsen (RB) -- He will miss the next four to six weeks with a broken right foot. Tevita Ofahengaue (TE) -- He has been cleared to play after sitting out most of fall practice with a hamstring injury. Damion Segovia (WR) -- Although his knee and his hamstring injury are mostly healed, he will sit out until next week, when he should play in the Virginia game. Kalani Sitake (RB) -- He suffered a separated shoulder in the UW game, but is cleared to play tonight. Colorado State Kevin McDougal (RB) -- He suffered a strained adductor muscle in his left leg during last weekend's Nevada game. His status won't be determined until game time. Lucas Staley ran for two touchdowns and caught another and BYU's defense shut out No. 24 Colorado State for three quarters, cruising to a 34-13 victory in the new conference's first game. Staley, who turn 19 today, carried 14 times for 64 yards and caught three passes for 35 yards. He had a one-yard TD run eight minutes into the game and added a seven-yard scoring catch 10 1/2 minutes later to make it 14-0. Staley had a five-yard scoring jaunt with 1:40 to go in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 31-0. Feterik was sharp, completing 28-of-37 passes for 310 yards. He also found Jaron Dabney with a 15-yard TD toss that stretched the lead to 21-0 with 1:01 remaining in the first half. The defense picked off Colorado State's Matt Newton three times and did not allow a score until the first play of the fourth quarter. The solid performance on both sides of the ball should help the Cougars (2-0) replace the Rams (2-1) in the top 25. BYU and Colorado State were the two highest-ranked schools of the eight that broke away from the Western Athletic Conference, which was known for its wild, high-scoring affairs and lack of defense. It was the 245th career win for BYU coach LaVell Edwards, who won 18 WAC crowns and a national title in 1984 in his 27 seasons with the Cougars. Notes: Kevin Feterik has never lost a game in the same week as his birthday--from little leagues, high school, and now college. He turned 22 earlier this week. Colorado State averaged 222 yards rushing in their first two games. Tonight, they were held to 28 yards on the ground. However, their star running back, Kevin McDougal, was out with a pulled muscle after having the gumption to trash talk in the media. Colorado State's offense did not cross midfield until the end of the third quarter when BYU was assessed a personal foul. Kevin Feterik, who was leading the nation in total offense after the Washington game, now is averaging 392 yards/game. He still holds the #1 spot over Mike Moschetti (Colorado) who has a 380 yards/game average. As a team, BYU still leads the nation in passing offense with 405 yards/game. Previous to tonight, Lucas Staley was 16th in the nation in scoring. With his three TDs tonight, he temporarily moves up to a tie for #8. BYU was second-to-last in the nation in turnovers after last week, but tonight snagged 3 interceptions, recovered one fumble and only gave up one fumble. Both Rob Morris and Brian Gray came out of the game with lower groin injuries, but both should be ready to go next week. The former Outland Trophy winner was raised on an Idaho farm, and now lives on a 650 acre spread near Manti, UT with his wife and four children. Buck has sunk most of the money he accumulated in the NFL into the new endeavor. "It was a big sacrifice for me and my wife," he says. "There were NFL guys I knew and other friends who said, 'Are you crazy? You want to farm? Live a life of ease.' I gave up a more lucrative career just so I could be with the kids. We were willing to give up the easier life. We wanted to build character. The greatest legacy I'll leave behind is not my football career and the Super Bowls. The implementation of the shotgun into the offense appears to be a success, as the team is averaging nearly 500 yards per game, and Kevin Feterik leads the nation in total offense. One statistic of note is the fact that the Cougars have scored in seven of eight quarters this year, having gone scoreless only in the first quarter of the Washington game. While Feterik is off to one of the best starts ever for a BYU quarterback, freshman running back Lucas Staley is making some waves of his own. The 6'1", 215 pound speedster is ranked fifth nationally in scoring, having reached the end zone five times in two games. Defensively, the Cougars flexed their muscles against CSU, allowing the Rams just 28 yards on the ground and two meaningless fourth quarter scores. The unit now ranks 7th in the nation for rushing defense. However, several key players suffered injuries during the game and are questionable for this weekend's game. Probably the hardest spot to fill would be that of cornerback Brian Gray, if he should be sidelined for the game. If the Cougar front seven are able to shut down Virginia running back Thomas Jones, the defense should be able to contain the Cavaliers nicely. Virginia will be playing west of the Mississippi for only the 11th time in the history of its program on Saturday night, and for the first time in the Mountain Time Zone. The "Hoos" are led by last year's national coach of the year, George Welsh, who is one of only six coaches with a winning record versus LaVell Edwards. Welsh is 2-0 against LaVell, having led Virginia to a 22 - 16 All-American Bowl victory over BYU in 1987, and having beaten the Cougars 23 - 16 in 1978 in the inaugural Holiday Bowl as the then-head coach of Navy. With at least seven wins in each of the past 12 seasons, the Cavaliers have a strong program with a good history, and entered the season with a top 25 ranking. However, two weeks ago at Clemson, the team was humbled as Tiger QB Brandon Streeter passed out of a shotgun attack for a team record 343 yards. Now Virginia is hungry to prove itself, and overconfidence shouldn't be a problem any more. Virginia's top offensive threat is senior Thomas Jones, who could be the best rusher the Cougs face all year. Jones is supported by a veteran offensive line and receiving corps, but quarterback Dan Ellis is relatively inexperienced and not very mobile if flushed out of the pocket. On defense, the Cavaliers' injury list has ballooned to include what seems to be most of the squad. The defensive backfield was supposed to feature three experienced stars from last year's team, but two have barely played, and another has been hindered by an ankle sprain. As a result, oft confused freshmen have taken the field and have been burned at times, especially against Clemson, when coaches counted 10 blown plays by the safeties. However, the youngsters have learned quickly, and the two freshman cornerbacks already have two interceptions apiece. Although the group fares better against run-oriented offenses, defensive coordinator Rick Lantz is determined to use the Clemson experience as a tool to prepare for the Cougs' similar offensive attack. ================================== Implications ================================== BYU has a legitimate shot at going undefeated this year, but has to take things one game at a time. A win over a team from the ACC will serve as additional proof that the Cougars belong among the nation's elite. Virginia is anxious to get back into the top 25 and to avoid a .500 record. Moreover, they want to prove to themselves and to everybody else that they are up to the challenge that the Cougar offense will provide. ================================== Players to Watch ================================== BYU #7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- His new-found confidence has transformed the BYU offense. If he shows the same poise and good decision making skills as he has so far this year, he could put up some big numbers on Saturday. #9, Jared Lee (DB) -- This safety had a huge game against Colorado State, and seems to be fitting into the defensive scheme more and more each week. His 65 yard interception return was one of last week's highlights. #22, Jaron Dabney (RB) -- After missing his punt returns for a year, Cougar fans have been excited to see him juke his way upfield. Maybe this will be the week he breaks out. #88, Ben Horton (WR) -- Watch for this sure-handed junior to have a huge game against Virginia's weakened defense. Virginia #6, Thomas Jones (RB) -- Though he's only 5'10", he has explosive speed and slashes to make tacklers miss. Jones is the 11th ranked runner in the nation with 136.7 yards per game, and collected over 1300 yards last season, although he only had 11 carries per game. He's in graduate school after having graduated in three years. #17, Dan Ellis (QB) -- He's 39th in the nation in total offense and delivers an accurate, catchable ball. #18, Yubrenal Isabelle (LB) -- He was named defensive player of the week in the ACC last week for his monster game against Wake Forest. #88, Kevin Coffey (WR) -- The star receiver for the Cavaliers, he averaged over 25 yards per catch last year. At 6'4", 200 pounds, he's a tough matchup for most DBs. ================================== Records to Watch ================================== BYU holds the current NCAA record of 301 consecutive games without being shut out. ================================== Injury Report ================================== BYU Brian Gray (CB) -- The best defensive back on the team suffered a right groin strain in the Colorado State game, and may miss Saturday night's competition. Aaron McCubbins (OL) -- He is slated to play despite possible damage to the lateral meniscus in his right knee. Rob Morris (LB) -- The freight train may have been temporarily derailed with a lower abdomen injury. His status will be a game-time decision. Mike Nielsen (RB) -- He remains on injured reserve as his broken foot heals. Heshimu Robertson (CB) -- Heshi bruised his hip in the CSU game, but should be ready to play. Ned Stearns (RB) -- A sprained left wrist has slowed down this sophomore a little. Virginia Maurice Anderson (DL) -- He suffered a bad left knee sprain last week, but should be ready to go on Saturday. Casey Crawford (TE) -- After a hernia took him out of the picture at the beginning of the season, he should be ready to go again. Travis Griffith (DE) -- His season, and possibly his football career has come to an end because of a high ankle sprain with ligament damage. The defensive captain will undergo surgery next week. Antwan Harris (DB) -- He's had problems with an injury to his left hamstring since the Cavs' season opener. He missed the Clemson game and had to leave last week's game against Wake Forest early when it tightened up on him. He is questionable, but will probably play. Jermese Jones (OL) --This behometh 315 pounder is redshirting this year after breaking his foot in spring ball, and facing lingering complications from knee surgery over the summer. Monsanto Pope (DL) -- He'll miss this weekend's game. Earl Sims (LB) -- This backup developed an abscess in his abdomen and has been hospitalized. He will not make the trip to Provo. Tim Spruill (DB) -- The only original projected starter in the Cavs' defensive backfield that has been able to play has to do it with a sprained ankle. Dewayne Stukes (DB) -- He hasn't suited up since the opener against North Carolina because of a hip flexor/quadriceps injury in his left leg. Powered by quarterback Kevin Feterik, BYU (2-1) nearly erased a 21-0 first-quarter deficit in the waning moments. The Cougars converted a 4th-and-2 and were aided by a holding penalty inside Virginia territory that kept alive their final drive. The Cougars had 1st-and-goal but were stymied on three straight plays by Virginia (2-1). On 4th-and-goal, Feterik fired wildly into the end zone and Evans, a defensive back, made a diving interception with less than two minutes remaining. Jones carried 35 times and surpassed his previous high of 207 yards against Georgia Tech on October 17, 1998. Jones entered the game ranked 11th in the nation with 410 yards in his first three games. Dan Ellis threw three touchdown passes for the Cavaliers, who were playing their first game against a ranked opponent this season. Feterik had another big game, completing 28-of-47 passes for 303 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. The senior has thrown for 1,013 yards and seven touchdowns in three games this season. The teams combined for more than 900 total yards with BYU holding a 472-432 edge. The Cavs came out of the locker room and looked like they were going to blow BYU off the field, scoring 21 unanswered points in the first quarter. The Cougars battled back and got on the board midway through the second quarter on Lucas Staley's two-yard run. The extra point failed and Jones ran 45 yards for a score on the ensuing drive to give Virginia a 28-6 cushion. But Staley, who carried eight times for 79 yards, ran for another second TD, this time scampering 41 yards into the end zone. Again, the conversion failed. BYU got a big play from its defense before halftime as Brian Gray returned an interception 21 yards for a TD that brought the Cougars within 28-19. Injury Notes: Carlos Nuno left the game in the 4th quarter and the early indication is that he has a torn MCL in his knee. More will be known next Wednesday. Without practicing at all this week, Brian Gray started and played almost the entire game at cornerback. He had a key interception for a touchdown in the second quarter that kept BYU in the game. At one point in the third quarter, he came out of the game limping, but returned to finish the game later. According to Gray, he reaggravated the injury (a pulled groin muscle), but felt like he had to play out the game. He will be revaluated next week. Jeff Holtry, starting at middle linebacker in place of Rob Morris went out of the game in the first quarter and never returned. He suffered a concussion. That left Dan DeCoit, a walk-on, to fill the middle linebacker spot. Rob Morris sat out the entire game due to a severe lower abdominal muscle pull. Other Notes: Feterik's 3 interceptions are the most he has ever thrown in one game. A 2nd quarter blocked PAT, combined with a failed 2 point conversion later on, forced the Cougars to try for the end zone in the waning minutes of the game. "That's true," offensive coordinator Norm Chow said. "If we stay up with our extra points, all we have to do is kick a field goal there at the end." The blocked extra point was the fourth Owen Pochman kick that's been blocked this season. All four blocks have come from pressure straight up the middle. An MRI showed that the concussion was a mild one and that no further brain trauma had taken place, but his history with the injuries prompted the decision to hold him out of the upcoming game. At the end of the 2nd quarter of the 49ers' Monday night win over the Cardinals, Young was hit hard by two defensive players, and was knocked out cold on the way down when his head hit the leg of offensive lineman Dave Fiore. Although he hadn't suffered a concussion in a couple of years, a string of three in 10 months during the 1996 and 97 seasons has led to a lot of worry about Young's health. An online poll at http://www.usatoday.com/sports/quick.htm has more than half of fans indicating that they believe that Young should retire to protect his health. Dr.Gary Steinberg, the chief neurologist at Stanford Hospital, said that Young isn't being cavalier by planning to continue his football career. He loves the game and wants to be successful, but, "Steve is not in denial in terms of this concussion issue. He will follow the medical advice," Steinberg said. It's interesting to think that had one play ended differently, the game would have ended in a win, and the Cougars would likely find themselves ranked in the top 15. That hasn't been the case during the first three games of the year. So far, the Cougars have equalled last year's two missed PATs, and have missed three field goal attempts as well. "That's a struggle," said Coach LaVell Edwards. "That's so frustrating, because we've never had that problem." In both the Washington and Virginia games, blockers were able to come straight up the middle for the blocks. A loss to Viginia in last week's game should serve to motivate the team this week as they prepare for the Aggies. The offense will be going up against a solid unit, and will need to execute and not get off to a slow start like they did last week. On defense, the Cougars are still "the walking wounded" in many cases. Some key defenders will be playing with nagging injuries, and it is hoped that they can hold up. A big key for the Y will be to field a strong, experienced middle linebacker to slow down Utah State's Demario Brown. Although Rob Morris will likely not play, Jeff Holtry is expected to be back in his place after suffering a concussion in the Virginia game. Utah State enters this contest with an extra week's rest due to a bye last week. The Aggies opened the season with a tough game at Georgia, then manhandled Stephen F. Austin at home, and then dropped a game in Salt Lake City to the U of U. USU's offensive output is similar to that of BYU's in that the 2nd quarter is their most productive. Their main weapon is senior running back Demario Brown, whom Aggie fans will tell you is another Thomas Jones. While that's a little hard to swallow, Brown does average 121 yards per game to rank 16th in the NCAA. The Aggies also know how to go to the air, and their main target is junior wide receiver Aaron Jones, who is averaging close to 200 yards receiving per game. The Aggie defense could have a tough time containing BYU's passing attack, but they are solid as a unit, and are healthy besides. BYU's offensive line has a noticeable size advantage over Utah State's rushers, so the Aggies will need to depend on speed and fundamentals to have a chance at pressuring Kevin Feterik. BYU hopes that the Aggies' scrappy play isn't able to create another shootout like happened in Provo the last time he teams met. ============================= Implications ============================= BYU needs to post a good win against the Aggies for a shot in the arm before Cal comes to town. A convincing win may bounce the Cougars back into the top 25, but a loss might banish them from the rankings for the remainder of the year. Utah State hopes to win back the "Wagon Wheel," a trophy of sorts that is housed by the winner of the annual BYU - USU game. The overall series tips in BYU's favor at 36-33-3, with the Y having won 13 of the last 14 meetings. This will be head coach Dave Arslanian's first meeting with the Cougs, as the two teams did not play last year during his first season at the helm of the Aggie program. ============================= Players to Watch ============================= BYU #7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- Three years ago he became the first true freshman to throw a TD pass for BYU since Jim McMahon. Since then he's steadily improved, and is playing incredibly right now. The offense hinges on his play. #45, Jeff Holtry (LB) -- The Michigan transfer will be a big key to stopping Demario Brown's running assault. #58, Chris Hoke (DL) -- He's been terrorizing quarterbacks on a regular basis this year. Watch for more to come. #91, Tevita Ofenhangue (TE) -- Just as this senior is fully recovering from hamstring problems, his counterpart Carlos Nuno is lost. He'll be asked to shoulder the bulk of the tight end duties. Utah State #7, Jeff Crosbie (QB) -- This sophomore earned the starting job halfway through last season and threw for 1,111 yards in just five games. This year he's ranked 24th nationally in total offense. #9, Aaron Jones (WR) -- This speedy wideout ranks in the top ten nationally for both receptions and receiving yards, netting 190 yards per game. #21, Demario Brown (RB) -- This 6'1", 213 lb. senior has rushed for over 100 yards in 16 of his last 24 games, and has a shot at becoming the all-time leading rusher in Utah major college history.
