Following the meet, men's coach Willard Hirschi and women's coach Craig Poole were named the MWC coaches of the year. BYU's women won 11 of 17 events on the weekend, led by its talented distance runners. Cougar runners took at least the top two spots in each distance event, and their 99 points alone would have been enough to win the team title for BYU. Competition was a little closer on the men's side, but the Cougars were able to emerge with a 51-point margin of victory, thanks largely to the all-around efforts of senior Kyle Grossarth. The Mountain West Conference meet was the Cougars' last before the NCAA Indoor Championships , March 10-11 in Fayetteville, AR. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Road Trip May Decide Volleyball's Postseason Fate (BYU NewsNet) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=3D8125&year=3Dcurre= nt BYU's men's volleyball team makes its final road trip of the season this week, traveling to California for matches with UCLA on Wednesday and Thursday, and UC Irvine on Friday and Saturday. The four matches will not only make a difference in the team's league standing, but will determine whether the team will host tournament play at the Smith Fieldhouse. "After these matches we will know whether we host or not," said coach Carl McGown. "We need to win three of these four matches." The team is especially excited to play perennial powerhouse UCLA at Pauley Pavillion. "UCLA gives us motivation," Zachary Robinson said. While four matches definitely don't make a season, the matches this weekend will tell a lot about the Cougars' future. "This week is going to tell whether we're going to make a run for the national championship," Joaquin Acosta said. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D BYU On the Skids, but Wait a Minute (Provo Daily Herald) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://www.heraldextra.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/F763C447E828161187256892= 0032C6D3 Last week's two losses dropped the men's basketball team to sixth in the conference, which is right where all the preseason polls said they would be. After Saturday's frustrating game at Wyoming, star guard Terrell Lyday said, "Until we learn to defend and score, this is going to be the outcome of every game. We beat these people earlier this year and they came out and stopped us. This game should have been ours, I'd say." However, at least one person still believes in the Cougs, and that's head coach Steve Cleveland. "We can regroup," he said. "We've been in more dire straits than this with worse teams. We'll find a way to win two ballgames (next week), get 18 wins and go into the (conference) tournament with confidence." Wyoming head man Steve McClain agreed, saying, "They'll go home now and get healthy. If they put two wins together in a row they go into the tournament a hot team. I wouldn't want to play them because we can't guard Mekeli Wesley (29.5 points per game against Wyoming)." =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D BB Recruit Meads Remains Focused (Deseret News) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,150017657,00.html? Basketball recruit Garner Meads is constantly asked where he will attend college -- will it be BYU, Stanford, or Utah? This week, he's not thinking about it, because he's intent on helping the Brighton Bengals advance through the Utah boys' basketball state tournament. He did have one scary moment on Monday night during a first round 56-37 win over Taylorsville. Fighting for a loose ball, he came down awkwardly and twisted his knee. It was deemed a simple strain and only kept him out of the game for a few minutes. However, he is listed as questionable for today's quarterfinal matchup with Riverton. Rated the top power forward in the West by some scouting publications, Meads was named Monday as a McDonald's All-American =97 only the fifth Utahn ever to earn that honor. As far as where his basketball career will take him after this week, he's not saying. "They're all good choices," was all he had to say about the three schools still in the hunt for his services. One thing he will say is that he won't postpone his decision until after his LDS mission, but will "definitely decide between now and the April signing deadline." =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Football Recruit Hurt in Automobile Accident (Salt Lake Tribune) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://www.sltrib.com/2000/feb/02242000/sports/28937.htm Brighton High senior Joel Theler, a Brigham Young football signee and member of the Bengals' #2 ranked boys basketball team, was seriously injured in an automobile accident the weekend before last and will be sidelined for six months, maybe longer. He suffered two broken bones in his neck and required 14 stitches in his left arm after the Jeep Cherokee he was driving rolled outside of Rexburg, Idaho. Theler said he fell asleep at the wheel and overcorrected, causing the accident. Theler will wear a large neck brace for at least three months. The Salt Lake Tribune all-state receiver and defensive back met with a neurosurgeon last Friday to determine the extent of the damage. "The doctors said most likely it will heal like a regular bone heals and I will be OK," Theler said. The much ballyhooed battle to become BYU's first signal-caller of the new millennium began last Friday as the Cougars opened spring practices in preparation for the 2000 season. The top candidates to fill that role include: Bret Engemann, Charlie Peterson and Brandon Doman. Engemann, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound sophomore, was Feterik's primary backup a year ago and may be the early favorite. Peterson, a 6-2, 190-pound junior, had the most productive spring a year ago, throwing for 422 yards on 28-of-45 attempts and four touchdowns. Doman, a 6-2, 195-pound junior, is perhaps the most versatile of the threesome because of his speed and quickness. All three quarterbacks are expected to see a lot of action during the spring. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Men=92s Volleyball Begins Six-Week Homestand (Utah County Journal) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://www.ucjournal.com/StoryLink.php3?id=3D1381139&c=3D1130302&s=3D= 8 After dropping three of its last four matches on a grueling, four-day California road trip last week, the BYU men's volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of the Smith Fieldhouse tonight, taking on 11th-ranked Ball State (10-5). Match time is slated for 3 p.m. (MST). The contest will kickoff a seven-match homestand that will span a period of six weeks before the Cougars head to the MPSF Tournament on April 22 at a site yet to be determined. There will eventually be 29 automatic and 35 at-large bids to this year's tournament. Although most sportswriters have written BYU's chances at the tournament off, both CNNSI.com and ESPN.com list the Cougars as a bubble team. It gives insight to Steve Young's driven personality, to his will to achieve and excel. It points out that he probably hasn't enjoyed life as much as some people would think, mostly because he's constantly concerned with doing and being better. Personal aquaintances of Young are quoted in regards to Young's conscientiousness. Last Saturday, the All-Pro quarterback took some time to hand out hugs and medals at Snowbird Ski Resort in Utah as disabled skiers raced down the slopes. "There's something special about getting human beings out on a ski hill," he said. "It's something they can feel in their heart. It's a great feeling for all of us. Out here, today, you'll see a lot of happy people." Mekeli Wesley added 10 points and Eric Nielsen had eight points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars (19-9). Damion Walker led New Mexico (17-13) with 16 points and Lamont Long added 13. R.T. Guinn had only four points but pulled down 12 rebounds for the Lobos. New Mexico hurt itself by going just 1-of-15 from 3-point range. The Lobos connected on only 27.6 percent of their field goal attempts. The Cougars led 27-18 at halftime with Long, the conference's leading scorer at 18.8 points per game, scoring only two. New Mexico cut the Cougars' lead to two points with just under nine minutes left, but Long then picked up his fourth foul. Lyday made both free throws to put the Cougars up 38-34. New Mexico's Kevin Henry then shot an airball on a 3-point attempt and Lyday made a layup. Marlon Parmer missed another 3-point attempt for the Lobos and Wesley made two free throws to make it 42-34. Long, who made just 5-of-18 shots, hit his team's only 3-pointer to bring New Mexico back within five with 6:32 left, but that was as close as the Lobos would get. ======================= Box Score ======================= 1st Half 2nd Half Final Score BYU 26 29 55 UNM 18 25 43 ======================= Statistics ======================= BYU (55) fg ft rb min m-a m-a o-t a pf tp Wesley 31 2-12 5-6 3-6 2 2 10 E Nielsen 32 4-5 0-0 3-11 1 5 8 Cooper 28 1-4 0-0 0-2 1 0 2 Vranes 37 2-8 1-2 2-7 3 3 6 Lyday 40 7-15 7-10 0-4 4 2 23 Christensen 3 0-0 2-2 0-1 0 0 2 Montague 11 0-1 0-1 0-0 0 0 0 D Nielsen 18 2-3 0-0 1-2 0 1 4 _______________________________________________ TOTALS 200 18-48 15-21 9-33 11 13 55 _______________________________________________ Percentages: FG-.375, FT-.714. 3-Point Goals: 4-13, .308 (Wesley 1-4, Cooper 0-1, Vranes 1-3, Lyday 2-5). Two young men had a big part in that upset: Guard Michael Vranes and post man Eric Nielsen. Nielsen had his best game ever as a Cougar, pulling down a personal best 11 rebounds to go along with his 8 points. His play was key as star Mekeli Wesley sat out most of the first half with foul trouble. "I felt like I had a lot more energy," Nielsen said. As for Vranes, his line doesn't exactly stand out in the box score: 6 points, seven rebounds and three assists. However, it was at the other end of the court that Vranes' presence was so important. His defensive hustle stymied Lobo star Lamont Long, who had dropped a combined 55 points on the Cougs in the teams' two previous meetings this season. "Matt (Montague) can't guard Lamont and I wasn't sure if Michael could for 40 minutes. Lamont missed some shots. . . but I have to give some credit to Michael," coach Steve Cleveland said. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D BYU's Reward? It hardly seems fair. Brigham Young upsets New Mexico, breaks its second-longest losing streak to a Mountain West foe, and what is the Cougars' reward? Utah -- owner of 12 straight wins over BYU. "I'm gonna enjoy this win for, oh, about an hour," Cleveland said Thursday after BYU beat the Lobos 55-43 in the first round of the MWC tournament. "Then we'll get to work on what we'll have to do tomorrow. It's a bad matchup for us," Cleveland said. "Utah is big and strong, and that's difficult for us because we're so thin inside. We realize the odds are against us." Junior forward Nate Cooper thinks that familiarity with the Utes will benefit the team. "Any time you lose to a team twice, you can look at the film and see where your defense breaks down," Cooper figured. "You can make whatever changes you need to. I'm sure we'll have some ideas about what to do." =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D BYU Makes a Bid for the NCAAs (Orem Daily Journal) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://www.ucjournal.com/StoryLink.php3?id=3D1384898&c=3D1130302&s=3D= 8 Every day is an audition for BYU. If BYU is to get a bid to the NCAA tournament, the Cougars must make a big impression on the NCAA tournament selection committee. Depending on numerous factors, that position could be the strength of the team or a weak link as it was at the end of last season. Mountain West Freshman of the Year Luke Staley is sitting out of spring drills after having surgery on his left knee and right shoulder, and may redshirt this fall to give his body time to heal. Fahu Tahi is recovering from various injuries while trying to decide whether to leave on an LDS mission this fall. Fullback Kalani Sitake is sitting out spring ball as he overcomes a broken ankle. Junior Mahe, who withdrew from school last year is waiting to see if he can be readmitted or not. Several incoming freshmen and junior college transfers show the potential to make immediate impacts in the fall, but for the time being, they are still untested in the Cougars' system. "It is unsettling," said offensive coordinator Lance Reynolds. "It would be nice to have some stability. But we're just trying to see who out here can play. That's our focus now. We can't do anything about the other stuff." =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Other Articles featured at CougarFan.com =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://CougarFan.com * New Mexico's Run Ends in Nevada Desert (Albuquerque Journal) * Stone Throws Nine Innings in Inaugural MWC Victory (BYUCougars.com) * BYU Sweeps Mountain Region Track Honors (BYUCougars.com) * Steve Young -- Games' First Volunteer (Deseret News) * Women's Hoops Peaking at the Right Time (Deseret News) ==================================================================== Copyright 1999, CougarFan.com *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from CougarFan Insider, go to http://www.CougarFan.com/insider or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ==================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "CougarFan.com" Subject: BB Post-game: BYU Beats Utah, 58-54! BYU snapped a 12-game losing streak Friday night to instate rival Utah, beating the Utes 58-54 in the semifinals of the MWC tournament. "When it's 12 times in a row, sometimes you wonder if you can do it," BYU coach Steve Cleveland said. "There's a lot of people in Provo that have had to struggle without having a rivalry in recent years." Eric Nielsen had a career-high 17 points and BYU held Utah without a field goal for more than seven minutes late in the game, then held on for the win. Terrell Lyday added 16 for BYU, which hadn't beaten Utah since a 64-57 home win in January 1995. "When I go back to school, I won't have people on my back saying you can't beat Utah," Lyday said. Nielsen, who averaged only 5.3 points a game, gave BYU (20-9) a 54-46 lead on his final basket with 2:20 left. Utah shot miserably to open the game and again in the second half, making only eight of 32 second half attempts. "We didn't show up tonight to win," said Alex Jensen, the conference's most valuable player who had only six points. "They came out and played like they hadn't beaten their instate rival in five or six years." Mottola led Utah with 17 points, while Althoff had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Utes. Almost lost in the euphoria of beating Utah was the fact BYU made the Saturday conference final, where it will face UNLV. "We won a big game tonight, but we're not there yet," Cleveland said. The Cougars will host Bowling Green of the Mid-American Conference Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center. "Receiving this invitation is a reflection of three years of hard work," BYU coach Steve Cleveland said. "Our goal all along was to get into a post-season tournament. This is an indication that we are making strides with our program. This is good for our team and our community." Tickets for the game go on sale Monday at 9 a.m. at the Marriott Center ticket office or by calling 378-BYU1 or 800-322-BYU1. Tickets will be sold on a first-come-first serve basis. The Lady Cougars will be playing Oklahoma as an 11th seed in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday in West Lafeyette, IN. The game time hasn't been announced yet. Coach Trent Shippen pointed out that BYU's bracket will be a tough one. The winner of BYU-Oklahoma will play either defending national champion Purdue, the host school, or Dartmouth one week from today. "UConn's in our bracket, too," said Shippen. "We could potentially play defending champion Purdue in the second round and No. 1 UConn in the third." ================================ Cougs Turned Head of One Well-Known Basketball Junkie (Provo Daily Herald) ================================ See: http://www.heraldextra.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/BF82721E58E9404B872568A10032D11F Danny Ainge spent the weekend with two of his sons in Las Vegas, taking in a weekend of BYU basketball. When all was said and done Saturday night, he was disappointed with the outcomes of both the men's and women's championships, but he was encouraged by the direction that the Cougars are heading. Ainge knows that Steve Cleveland's troops were never able to coast; he knows that they gave their all to gut out 20 wins on the season. "For him to get his team to the finals of this tournament, he got everything he could out of those guys," Ainge said. "I think they played their guts out against New Mexico and Utah. I knew it would be tough to come out and have enough to get after UNLV." Cleveland, claimed Ainge, has got the BYU ship sailing in the right direction. "I'm very impressed with the job he's done." ================================ Football Team Holds First Spring Scrimmage (BYUCougars.com) ================================ See: http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/20000311_ftb_rel.html The BYU football team wrapped up its first full week of practice with a 100-play scrimmage on Saturday at Cougar Stadium. "I feel good about our effort out here today," BYU head coach LaVell Edwards said. "I really enjoy this time of year. It gives us a good look at the players. I'm pleased with their intensity and execution." Junior Charlie Peterson started the scrimmage with a 4-for-8 performance in the first series, including a 39- and 25-yard completion to junior fullback Mike Nielsen. Peterson competed in three different series, completing 14-of-21 for 205 yards and one interception. In his final series, the 6-2, 190-pounder found Jonathan Pittman for a 42-yard touchdown strike, marking the longest touchdown pass of the day. Sophomore Bret Engemann also competed in three series, completing 9-of-13 attempts for 110 yards with one touchdown completion and one interception. In his second series, the 6-4, 220-pounder found Toby Christensen for a 30-yard touchdown reception. Brandon Doman completed 9-of-11 attempts in his three series, including a 3-for-3 performance for 31 yards in his final series. ================================ Rugby Team 8-0 after 70-13 Victory over New Mexico (BYU NewsNet) ================================ See: http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=8370&year=current The BYU rugby team was hoping for a challenging match when they faced New Mexico on Saturday, March 11, but instead found just another victim. The Cougars demolished the Lobos 70-13 to improve their record to 8-0. BYU has now beaten their opponents by a total of 468-50, winning by an average of 52 points. This game marked only the second time this season BYU has allowed more than seven points. The Cougars not only showed their dominance once again, but they may have scared their next opponent. The University of Utah is canceling their game this Saturday against the Cougars because of spring break. The game has been tentatively rescheduled for March 28th. ================================ Cleveland's Army May Have Lost Battle, but Winning War (Provo Daily Herald) ================================ See: http://www.heraldextra.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/4D8194E5E453FA88872568A000344875 Steve Cleveland's basketball team emerged from Saturday night's shellacking at the hands of UNLV feeling more than a little down. However, if they're able to take a step back and see what they've accomplished this season, they can hold their heads high. All season, people have talked about how much better next year's team will be with a bevy of new recruits playing for the Cougs, and the loss of only one senior. However, this year's group wildly overachieved and set a standard that next year's team will be hard-pressed to match. "If we're 20-9 next year at this time, I'll be thrilled," Cleveland said before Saturday's game. "We've raised the bar. We could have a better basketball team next year and not have as good a record." ================================ Other Articles featured at CougarFan.com ================================ See: http://CougarFan.com * Worth the Wait: BYU Elated with NIT Bid (Salt Lake Tribune) * Ainge Trio On Hand to Cheer On Cougs (Provo Daily Herald) * Trip to Tourney a Lift for Women's Program (Salt Lake Tribune) * Women's Track Runs to 6th Place in NCAAs (BYU NewsNet) * Quarterback Who? The Cougars (21-10) won for the fifth time in their last six games and will play next week against the winner of Thursday night's game between Colorado and Southern Illinois. Bowling Green (22-8) came in as the nation's No. 3 shooting team (49.8 percent), but BYU held the Falcons to 34 percent (9-of-26) in building a 38-28 halftime lead. Bowling Green finished 32 percent (17-of-52) from the floor. Coach Dan Dakich wanted to see his team run after the Falcons were lulled into a halfcourt game by Miami, Ohio, during a first-round upset at the Mid-American Conference tournament. But BYU showed it can run, too. The Cougars averaged 70.4 points this season and, after the teams banged inside through the first half, BYU took control with a 10-3 run over the last 3:48 before the break. MAC player of the year Anthony Stacey, Bowling Green's leading scorer at 17 points a game, was held to three first-half points and finished with 11. The Falcons also had 17 turnovers. Mekeli Wesley added 13 points for BYU. Mekeli Wesley added 16 points for the Cougars (22-10), the 1951 and 1966 NIT champions who are in the postseason for the first time in five years. BYU will play at Notre Dame on Wednesday. The Fighting Irish posted a 76-64 victory over Xavier earlier tonight. Kent Williams scored 17 points for Southern Illinois (20-13), which defeated Colorado, 94-92, in the first round on Thursday but closed the season with three losses in six games. The Salukis were in the NIT for the seventh time since winning it in 1967, when they were a Division II school. Notes: BYU is now 22-10, their best record since the 1994-95 and 1993-94 seasons (both 22-10). The BYU players and coaches returned shortly after the game and mingled with the crowd. Various players went over to the student section and cheered with them. BYU held its opponent under 35% shooting in each of their last 5 wins. The Cougars now have an overall record of 11-5 in the NIT. The last time BYU went three games deep into a postseason tournament was in the 1986 NIT. Attendance tonight was 16,949. Bobby Knight, then the Army coach, had thrown a fit in the locker room after the game and kicked in some lockers. An Army official was upset, and fearing that he would lose his job, Knight made his way to the Cougars' hotel at 4:00 a.m. to apologize. BYU Coach Stan Watts called the Army official and said, "Bobby's here and he's apologized like you asked. You stick with him because he's a great young coach and he'll win a couple of national championships before he's through." The Y went on to win the championship game, adding another NIT championship to Coach Watts' resume to go along with that of his 1951 team. ======================================== NCAA Loss Doesn't Dim Great Year for Women Cagers (Provo Daily Herald) ======================================== See: http://www.heraldextra.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/39B99D08229E5CD6872568A9002BEE34 The BYU women's basketball team may have been dismissed from the NCAA tournament in its first game Saturday, but that doesn't mean the Cougars were losers. The BYU Cougars and 16,949 of their close personal friends held a party at the Marriott Center Monday, and fact is, you just had to be there. You had to be there two decades ago when they packed 'em in up to the ventilation ducts. And you had to be there a couple of years ago when they couldn't attract stray animals, much less paying adults. Lastly, you had to be there Monday, when it all came rushing back. It wasn't full to the top, but you wouldn't know it by the noise. But the crowd didn't fully get worked until the game's end, as the Cougars pulled away. It chanted "Beat Notre Dame!" and stopped only long enough to give little-used freshman Marc Roberts a huge ovation for dunking. All that excitement, though, was just the warm-up. After the final horn, the student section applauded until Cleveland and the players made a curtain call; some even went into the stands to mingle. "It looked like a mosh pit," said one writer. Then the fans actually lifted Cleveland onto their shoulders. "I was a little embarrassed by that," Cleveland said, and added, "I promise you, I didn't want them to pick me up." ======================================== Other Articles featured at CougarFan.com ======================================== See: http://CougarFan.com * BYU Knows Notre Dame Trip Treacherous (Standard-Examiner) * Livin' Large: Bradley Faces Off-Court Height Challenges (Dallas Star-Telegram) * Wrestlers Go Out with Fight at Nationals (BYU NewsNet) * Eagles Re-Sign TE Chad Lewis (NFL.com) * BYU Sole Hoops Survivor in State (Standard-Examiner) ==================================================================== Copyright 1999, CougarFan.com *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from CougarFan Insider, go to http://www.CougarFan.com/insider or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ==================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "CougarFan.com" Subject: News Recap (3/21/2000) Date: 21 Mar 2000 13:51:41 -0700 CougarFan Insider http://cougarfan.com News Recap (3/21/2000) Selected articles included here. The Cougars, forced to travel 1,800 miles Tuesday to play Notre Dame (21-14), hung tough in the final minutes. The Irish, who played their first three tournament games at home, responded to each spurt by BYU (22-11) with a run of their own for a return trip to New York, where they lost both games in the preseason NIT. BYU was able to cut the Notre Dame lead to 52-47 with less than seven minutes left. But the Irish responded with an 8-0 run, capped by Mike Monserez's 3-pointer. The Irish also cut off a BYU surge less than two minutes into the second half, when Michael Vranes' jumper pulled the Cougars within 40-39. BYU scored just once on its next 10 possessions, and the Irish went on a 10-2 run to gain some breathing room. Though the Cougars spent all day Tuesday just getting to South Bend, they showed few signs of fatigue until the second half. After starting the game 6-of-14 from 3-point range, the Cougars lost their touch from long range, hitting just 2-of-15 in the final period. David Graves scored 13 for the Irish, who will play Penn State on Tuesday in the NIT semifinals. The Irish weren't able to pull away until the end because they couldn't hold onto the ball, turning it over 18 times. That helped the Cougars compensate for getting to the free throw line only seven times, hitting four. The Irish were 16-of-18 from the stripe. Vranes, Mekeli Wesley and John Allen scored 10 points apiece for BYU. Notes: Terrell Lyday was only 2-11 on three-pointers while the team only managed 27% from behind the arch. Notre Dame attempted 18 free throws to BYU's 7. The Irish hit on 89% of the shots from the charity stripe. A Notre Dame fan in the stands held a sign that said, "Sweet RevAinge". And you thought they had forgotten about it by now... ====================== Box Score ====================== 1st Half 2nd Half Final Score BYU 32 20 52 UND 38 26 64 ====================== Statistics ====================== BYU (52) fg ft rb min m-a m-a o-t a pf tp Vranes 35 3-12 2-3 3-5 0 2 10 E Nielsen 35 2-5 2-2 1-3 1 3 6 Wesley 24 4-7 0-2 0-2 1 5 10 Lyday 38 3-14 0-0 1-2 1 1 8 Montague 34 3-6 0-0 3-3 8 1 6 Christensen 4 0-1 0-0 1-1 0 0 0 Allen 14 4-5 0-0 0-0 0 3 10 Cooper 11 0-1 0-0 0-3 2 2 0 D Nielsen 5 1-3 0-0 0-0 0 1 2 _______________________________________________ TOTALS 200 20-54 4-7 9-19 13 18 52 _______________________________________________ Percentages: FG-.370, FT-.571. 3-Point Goals: 8-29, .276 (Vranes 2-8, Wesley 2-4, Lyday 2-11, Christensen 0-1, Allen 2-3, Cooper 0-1, D Nielsen 0-1).
