Some have wondered if they were accidently unsubscribed, while others question whether we're still alive. As the great Samuel Clemens once penned, "The reports of (our) demise have been greatly exaggerated." By way of explanation, we as co-owners thought that we would share a little about ourselves to let you know who we are and what we do when we're not covering BYU sports. First of all, CougarFan.com is a hobby for us, albeit a wonderful and enjoyable one. We are both busy with work and other pursuits, and sometimes our schedules don't allow us to put the time into CougarFan.com that we would like to. Over the past several weeks we have both been spending obscene numbers of hours at work and have been hard-pressed to do more than just keep the site updated with news articles. As an introduction, we are John Ahlander and Chris Kelly. John is from Gilbert, AZ, and currently resides in Provo, where he works for a startup Internet company named Whizbang Labs, which recently launched a job-search website called FlipDog.com. Chris is a native of Blackfoot, ID, where he is a cattle rancher. He owns and operates Kelly Angus Farm, which just had its annual production sale. We met in the Argentina Cordoba Mission of the LDS Church, where we served as companions for two months, and have remained good friends during our time at BYU and in the years since. We're both still single, but our efforts to change that take up a good portion of our time as well. There's an article at http://cougarfan.com/teams/general/news/1999/08-31.html that details how we came up with the idea of CougarFan.com along with another good friend, Chris Stock. In a nutshell, we want you to know that we appreciate your support and interest in what we do, and we also appreciate your patience when we aren't as consistent as we would like to be with the emails we send out. Although we should have more free time on our hands now than we have in the recent past, the volume of emails will probably still be fairly low for the next few months because of reduced sports activity over the summer. For the time being, we'll cheer on the Cougs in every sport possible, and dream of football season! =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Danny Ainge Inducted into All-America Hall of Fame (CougarFan.com) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://cougarfan.com/teams/basketball_m/news/2000/04-06.html Five outstanding former student-athletes will be inducted into the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame=AE at ceremonies at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston on May 1. A standout all-around athlete, Ainge played professional baseball with the Toronto Blue Jays during his college career. Drafted by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 1982 draft, Ainge played 14 years in the NBA with Boston, Sacramento and Phoenix, winning NBA titles with the Celtics in 1984 and 1986 and appearing in four other NBA finals. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Steve Young Leaning Toward Return (ESPN.com) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/2000/0405/464461.html San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young is in the middle of a long, round-the-world honeymoon, but he may have left his football heart in San Francisco. Young's agent, Leigh Steinberg, told the San Francisco Chronicle his Super Bowl-winning client is interested in returning for his 16th pro season -- and he would like to do it with the 49ers. In Wednesday's edition, Steinberg said Young, who married the former Barbara Graham March 14, was completely uncommitted a while back. "When the season ended, it was really unclear to me what he would do," Steinberg said. "And it's starting to be clearer what he wants to do is return and play. "When he gets back, we'll sit down with the 49ers and see where he fits into their plans," he added. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Boosters Honor BYU Athletes, Coaches (Provo Daily Herald) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://www.heraldextra.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/B416AE4B4736C75E872568B9= 0026772C BYU's Wilkinson Center was the site of the annual Cougar Club awards banquet last night, where eight NCAA champions and countless All-Americans were honored for their athletic, academic and community achievements. BYU? Utah? Stanford? Or, perhaps, simply crazy just trying to decide? For now, the latter might be the most accurate answer for Meads, who on Monday said he's still painstakingly pondering where to take his much-ballyhooed basketball skills. "I haven't decided yet. I really haven't. I'd really like to get it (the decision) in a week. It wears on you," said Meads, who just returned from a trip to Boston to participate in the McDonald's All-American Game. In its last meet ever, the No. 10 BYU men's gymnastics team placed fourth in Thursday's qualifying session at the NCAA men's gymnastics championships =97 one position away from advancing to the finals. However, the Cougars end their season by breaking an all-time school record for team score with a 228.625. Despite the record-setting performance, the Cougars still ended behind California, who won the competition with a score of 230.375, Oklahoma (229.850) and host Iowa (229.625). "It would have been really nice if everyone would have hit, but we fought to the end," BYU coach Mako Sakamoto said, after an emotional evening. "Placing seventh in the nation is very respectable. Finishing with our highest score ever helped us go out with a bang." BYU President Merrill J. Bateman left the door open for a possible future in remarks at Wednesday night's Cougar Club Banquet, saying, "Maybe a day will come when we've had time to build some additional resources after we've built up our women's programs and we can add it back." "I=92m excited to move on with this part of my career," Morris said. "I think I will fit in well with the Colts. I=92m really looking forward to it. Seven former BYU football players are heading to various NFL mini-camps to continue their gridiron careers. Linebacker Rob Morris (1st round, Indianapolis), defensive end Byron Frisch (3rd round, Tennessee), and offensive lineman Matt Johnson (5th round, Indianapolis) were happy to be selected by NFL teams during the draft, but four other former BYU players kept their chances at a pro career alive when they signed free agent contracts with various teams. Defensive back Brian Gray signed on with Cincinnati after his draft stock plummeted because of a poor showing in February's combines, while quarterback Kevin Feterik signed with Seattle where he will play under former BYU assistant Mike Holmgren. Tight end Carlos Nuno will head to Miami, where another former Cougar and close friend Joe Wong was drafted last year. BYU's women's gymnastics team finished their season last Wednesday at the NCAA Championships in Boise, ID. Although the team led the event early on and slipped to 11th place overall out of the 12 teams there, coach Brad Cattermole had no complaints. "I don't think there was a whole lot left to give," Cattermole said. "This group really got out there and fought -- in general, they just fought until the end. "Nobody gave up, and nobody's head came off in the middle of the game," Cattermole said in his unique manner, meaning that the two falls the Cougars suffered didn't rattle anyone. And they didn't count in the scoring, either. "We didn't have the meet of our lives, which is what we probably what it would have taken to move on," he said. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D Cleveland Family Needs Serious Home Theater System (Provo Daily Herald) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/7D19B3CF9A24A01D872568C= 20027C278 While BYU basketball coach Steve Cleveland was scouting out the Salukis of Southern Illinois and other NIT opponents, he was also recording all 63 games of the NCAA tournament. "This spring I'll watch every one of those games and look for things to help us in some very specific areas. We're going to try and refine our motion offense based on the personnel we'll have the next four or five years, which is very different from the personnel we've had the first three. We'll glean some thoughts and ideas from the tournament teams." Some of the aspects of the game that Cleveland will address before next season's squad takes the floor include implementing a full-court press with the depth that the Cougars will have next year, as well as developing a strategy that includes more zone defenses. Players may be shuffled around to different positions, and several who have seen big minutes over the last season or two may have to share time with newcomers because of incoming talent. So why is everybody so excited during spring ball? The answer to that question most likely has to do with changes in the coaching staff. Whether he deserved it or not, ex-offensive coordinator Norm Chow was often blamed for playing favorites, whereas his replacement, Lance Reynolds, has the respect of his players. BYU's Manuel Merizalde took a five-shot lead into the final day of last week's Cougar Classic, but then his teammate Andy Miller got hot and fired a career-best 63 to win the tournament and come within one of the Riverside Country Club course record set by Jay Don Blake 20 years ago. Miller's magnificent round and close win over Merizalde was the main excitement on a day when the team race was a non-issue. Host BYU began the day with an almost insurmountable 22-stroke lead and, after shooting another exceptional score Saturday (13-under-par 275), the Cougs cruised to a 24-stroke win over New Mexico. Fresno State was another 14 strokes back to finish third in the 15-team tournament. =========================================== After over 40 Years, BYU Equipment Manager Still Inspires (BYU NewsNet) =========================================== See: http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=9135&year=current Floyd Johnson, a man who served as BYU's equipment manager for decades before retiring, recently returned to work on a volunteer basis at the University. His story is intriguing and touching, and shows what a difference one person can make on the lives of countless aquaintances. Now, hundreds, if not thousands of athletes who have played at BYU credit "Brother J" with being a positive influence on their lives. None of it really makes sense to Johnson. After all, isn't he just an 81-year-old guy with aching knees and high blood pressure who washes socks? "It's a little embarrassing to me," said the former BYU equipment manager. "I don't look at myself as anything special. Why all this attention? I'm not worthy of this. All I've done is share my love and testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ." =========================================== Women's Soccer Shuts Out Chilly South Africans (Orem Daily Journal) =========================================== See: http://www.ucjournal.com/StoryLink.php3?id=1428390&c=1130302&s=8 BYU defeated the South African National Women's Soccer Team last Thursday, 4-0 in their final game before heading to Europe for an international trip of their own. "We came into the game not really knowing anything about their team," BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We just wanted to make sure that we kept things simple. . . we had a lot of open shots and didn't finish, which has typically been the story of our lives." The South Africans claimed the outcome of the game wasn't too disappointing. "The objective for us is that we are prepared for the African Nations Tournament, which will be held in South Africa," said Eddie Duplooy, who is an executive member of the South African Football Association. In fact, the team had just one complaint. With temperatures in the 70s in Provo, the cold was the only downside. "The cold weather is a bit difficult for us," Duplooy said, who was actually referring more to Park City, where the team is staying. "The people are very friendly here and the accommodations are perfect." =========================================== Kenneth Andam Steals the Show at BYU Invitational (Salt Lake Tribune) =========================================== See: http://www.sltrib.com/2000/apr/04232000/sports/43755.htm The weather was nice, but it was not a big day for showstopping performances at Brigham Young's annual Clarence Robison Invitational track and field meet. Unless you count Kenneth Andam, that is. The BYU junior ran his first 200 meters of the outdoor season Saturday, and tore through the turn on what for weeks had been an ankle with a stress fracture in it to win in 20.93 seconds. That wasn't quite an Olympian time, but considering it came not long after victories in the 100 meters and the 400-meter relay -- never mind on that long-injured leg -- it did not stop Andam from jokingly bragging a bit from behind his enormous smile. "This is home. Home is different," he said. "I always say, even if you bring Michael Johnson to this track, I'm going to beat him." =========================================== UCLA Sweeps by Volleyball Team in MPSF Tournament (Deseret News) =========================================== See: http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,165006945,00.html? Same location, different result for the Brigham Young men's volleyball team. Pauley Pavilion, the site of last year's NCAA championship victory, wasn't as kind to the Cougars this time. BYU lost to UCLA 15-11, 15-6, 15-13 in a first-round Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoff match Saturday night in front of 1,018 fans. UCLA (25-5) swept BYU (18-9) in three meetings this season, although none of the victories were as easy as this one. In two regular season matches, UCLA needed four games both times. UCLA credited its extensive time reviewing video tapes of BYU for the ease of their victory. "We spent hours watching tapes," said outside hitter Evan Thatcher. "We knew what rotation they were going into before they did." =========================================== Other Articles featured at CougarFan.com =========================================== See: http://CougarFan.com * BYU Sluggers Ready for Utes (Provo Daily Herald) * Women's Golf Finishes Second in MWC (Provo Daily Herald) * Lacrosse Team Defends National Title in Colorado (BYU NewsNet) * BYU Recruit Chrisman Tough on Timpview (Provo Daily Herald) * Trinidad Native Uses Track to Run to America (BYU NewsNet) * Elewonibi Says Trade Gives Him New Lease on Life (Ottawa Citizen) * Men's Tennis Places Third in Conference Tournament (BYUCougars.com) * Kunkel Earns National Diving Crown (Deseret News) ==================================================================== Copyright 1999, CougarFan.com *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from CougarFan Insider, go to http://www.CougarFan.com/insider or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ====================================================================
