The home uniforms will be solid blue, with white numbers trimmed with tan. Tan will also be used as an accent color in the form of a stripe that runs up the side of the uniform, as well as a thin tan ribbing that runs from under the arm to the side of the neckline. The pants will be solid blue with a tan stripe on each side of the leg to match the stripe on the side of the shirt, appearing as one continues stripe from under the arm to the bottom of the pant. As a result of this action, the Mountain West Conference will be eligible for automatic qualification consideration in all sports beginning in the 2000-2001 season. "We are pleased with the results of yesterday=92s NCAA Board of Directors meeting and are glad to have this matter behind us," commented Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson. "To date, our at-large success for team sports competing in NCAA postseason competition has been very impressive and now eligibility for automatic bids in 2000-2001 will only enhance the regular-season competition among Mountain West Conference institutions." =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D Will Wrestling Return? The Utah Amateur Wrestling Foundation has enough money to completely fund the Cougars for another year, said former BYU athletic director Rondo Fehlberg, a member of the organization's board of directors. BYU's administration has set a higher standard for the retention of the program; it has asked the UAWF to raise $7 million by May 31 without a guarantee the university would accept the money and restore the sport. BYU announced a year ago it would eliminate wrestling and men's gymnastics this spring. Members of the UAWF's board of directors have themselves pledged $200,000. The annual wrestling budget at BYU is approximately $250,000. "If we closed all the pledges we have, it would give us an additional several million," Fehlberg said, "but BYU's requirement is that we raise $7 million. If we raise that amount, it would endow the sport, and they'd go back to the Board of Trustees with our proposal. "We'll be working right up to the 11th hour." =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D Cougs Doing Less than Expected at Championship Golf Tourney (BYU NewsNet) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=3D9173&year=3Dcurre= nt After one day of the Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship tournament, BYU's team is tied with New Mexico for third place. The NCAA has already approved allowing teams to play a 12th game when there are 14 playing dates in a season. The Southeastern Conference expects to approve changes to its conference schedule this week. "Now ESPN has got caught up in it a little," said LSU athletic director Joe Dean. See also: http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,170008260,00.html? For the first time in his tenure at BYU, head coach Steve Cleveland can be excited about his incoming recruits AND his returning players. A nucleus of lettermen from last year's team, including seniors Mekeli Wesley and Terrell Lyday, will be complimented by one of BYU's best recruiting classes ever. Suddenly, the program that has been desperately lacking in depth and talent has a whole new look. Glance at next season's roster and it becomes evident that playing time will be spread thin. How is Cleveland going to keep everyone happy? "Those are problems I've wanted for three years, instead of looking at the bench and wondering who I was going to put in," Cleveland said. "Every person we recruited can play and succeed at this level. Our job as a coaching staff is to put the pieces together. The guys we have coming back proved they can win 20 games. But there's going to be minutes for a number of young men in our program next year." ====================================== Cougar Track Supremacy: New Conference, Same Result (Salt Lake Tribune) ====================================== See: http://www.sltrib.com/2000/may/05212000/sports/sports.htm BYU's track program continued its dominance in the first-ever MWC outdoor track and field championships, held in Provo on May 20. Several individual bests helped the Cougar men to win their third straight conference championship, whereas the women went about their business and earned their 18th consecutive conference championship. Sprinter Kenneth Andam won three events for the Cougars, while Jeremy Kemp cleared 17 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the pole vault, and Marc Chenn led a sweep with a personal-best in the high jump. Senior Kirsten Bolm won the 100 hurdles in a personal-best 13.02 seconds and finished second in the 100 after winning the long jump on Friday. The Lady Cougars also won every distance event from 800 on up -- Sharolyn Shields and Marty Hernandez each had a victory and a second-place finish in that span -- and both hurdles events. ====================================== Steve Young Takes Time for Himself (USAToday.com) ====================================== See: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/focustue.htm Yes, Steve Young is bracing for more change in his life -- be it retiring or signing with another team. No, he is not concerned that doctors would prevent him from returning to the field. Yes, Young has a verbal agreement with the 49ers that no decision on his future will be announced until after Thursday. No, he is not on the fence; rather, he appears close to a decision. Since returning from a lengthy honeymoon, Young has spent a month gathering information as he did while earning a law degree in the offseason of 1993. Young doesn't want people to read into the fact that, last week, he began working out at the 49ers' training facility for the first time since his wedding. Then again, the thought has crept into Young's mind that, since his wife Barbara already is pregnant, there is a chance their child could see him play -- a lifelong dream. "For me, it's fundamentally about if I want to expand on my career, and where is that, and is that possible," Young says. ====================================== Men's Golfers Aim for Return to Contention at NCAA Meet (Salt Lake Tribune) ====================================== See: http://www.sltrib.com/2000/may/05312000/sports/53777.htm Bruce Brockbank would love to discover how his Brigham Young golf team responds to the heat of contending for the NCAA championship. The trick is getting into that position again. With the same five players as this year, the Cougars were tied for second place after two rounds last June in Minnesota and stood fourth entering the final round, only to slip to a seventh-place finish. So can the Cougars challenge for the national championship again this year? "I'd like to believe so," says Brockbank, whose team tees off today at Grand National Golf Club in Opelika, AL. But "it's very competitive out there. College golf is healthy right now, and it's going to grow." The man who has coached runners such as Ralph Mann, Frankie Fredericks, Oluyemi Kayode, Leonard Myles-Mills and Kenneth Andam to world records, NCAA championships and Olympic medals will be ending his career at BYU within a matter of days. He has taught sprinters to move with grace, relaxation, rhythm and fluidity, but will pass the torch to his successor, Mark Robison after this week's NCAA Championships. His timing may be poor; next year the Cougars expect to field their best team in years, one that Hirschi believes will contend for a national title. "In terms of the success we're having, it's not the best time to leave," he says. "I can't believe how good we're going to be next year. I can honestly say I don't know why I'm retiring. Just a multitude of reasons, some that can't be expressed. I guess it's best to go early than to stay too long. And I've got other things I want to do." ====================================== Other Articles featured at CougarFan.com ====================================== See: http://CougarFan.com * Could ABC Be Next Team for Young?
