After a sluggish offensive start to the season, the Cougars came to life in last week's Virginia game, scoring on six of eight second half possessions. Brian McDonald stepped in and showed that the Y does have a running game without Luke Staley. The former Cerritos JC player rushed for 86 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, sparking the comeback against the Cavaliers. Bret Engemann also had a huge second half, spreading the ball around to 11 different receivers and finishing the game with passing stats of 34 of 41 for 447 yards and two TDs. Cougar faithful hope to see the offensive prowess continue this week. BYU's rushing defense sometimes looked weak, as the Cavaliers racked up 270 yards, including 161 by Antwoine Womack, but the Cougars flexed their muscles down the stretch, holding Virginia on key short yardage plays, and ultimately intercepting the Cavaliers in overtime. The Y's defense has traditionally played very well against the option, and will once again be tested by Fisher DeBerry's Cadets. Air Force enters the game leading the nation in rushing (583 yards) and total offense (698 yards). Although Air Force is known for its option, they put the ball in the air 19 times against Cal State-Northridge last weekend. True, the Falcons threw for just 115 yards, but they gave the defense something extra to think about. If they want to have a chance against BYU, they'll need to do the same thing to keep the defense honest, so the Cougars don't stack the line. The one weakness that Air Force showed last week against their overmatched opponents was that they only went 3 for 12 on 3rd down conversions. Defensively, coach DeBerry would like to see his troops do a better job in the red zone. ================================= Implications ================================= BYU wants to show that the second half in Charlottesville wasn't a fluke and that they can continue to play at that level. Also, they want to send LaVell out with one last win over his friend and colleague, Fisher DeBerry. If the Cougars can possibly get a big lead, they can rest their first unit for Mississippi State, who will be in Provo in a mere five days. Air Force will be looking to start off conference play with a win and make a statement that they are ready to be classed at the top of the MWC once again after last season's lackluster 6-6 record. Coach DeBerry will also try to improve on his 2-12 mark against the Y. The Falcons will try to repeat the last game between the two teams in Colorado Springs, in which they prevailed 38-12 in 1995. ================================= Players to Watch ================================= BYU #5, Jonathan Pittman (WR) -- His speed and senior leadership make him a dangerous weapon. His 70 yard reception at Virginia was the longest this season for a Cougar. #19, Dustin Staley (CB) -- His good instincts help him to play well as either a safety or cornerback. His first career start came against Air Force last year, and yielded him an interception. #22, Tyson Smith (S) -- He and Jared Lee will get the chance to play a different kind of defense this week against Air Force's vaunted option attack. #86, Doug Jolley (TE) -- Though he may not be as good of a run blocker as Tevita Ofahengaue, he will get a chance to show off his soft hands this week as BYU goes up against Air Force's smaller defensive line. Air Force #3, Mike Thiessen (QB) -- Although he only started five games last season in place of an injured Cale Bonds, he is the leading returning rusher in the MWC. He churned out a 142 yard rushing, 140 yard passing game against New Mexico last year. He also plays baseball and has a good chance to go pro. #11, Dallas Thompson (P,K) -- An LDS returned misisonary, he kicked the game-winner against Notre Dame as a sophomore in 1996. Also on his resume is a 62 yarder in a JV game as a freshman. He was named the MWC special teams player of the week after handling the punting and kicking chores against Cal State-Northridge. #30, Scotty McKay (RB) -- A true team leader, he averaged 6.7 yards per carry last season, and was fourth in the league in all-purpose yards with a 114.4 average. He was also second in receiving on the team with 15 catches for 209 yards and a touchdown. #42, Corey Nelson (LB) -- At 6'4", 240 lbs., he's not your typical cadet. Besides being one of the leading tacklers on the team last year, he returned an interception 27 yards for a score against Army and blocked two kicks against Colorado State. His 4.5 blocks for the season were the second most ever for a Falcon. ================================= Records to Watch ================================= BYU holds an ongoing NCAA record of 314 consecutive games without being shut out. Owen Pochman will look to add to his personal BYU scoring record. Margin Hooks needs 102 yards to catch Chris Smith at #5 on the BYU career receiving yardage list. Hooks also ranks fifth nationally with a string of 26 consecutive games with a reception. ================================= Injury Report ================================= BYU Luke Staley (RB) -- Following a shoulder sprain and concussion at Florida State, he was held out of the Virginia game. He will return to the field on Saturday. Ben Horton (WR) -- He will be out two or three more weeks after undergoing surgery on a finger broken against Florida State. Jeff Holtry (LB) -- After injuring his ACL against Florida State, he was held out of the Virginia game on defense, but gave a gutty performance as deep snapper. His final play as a Cougar may have been when he hiked the ball for the winning field goal in OT. Jimmy Betham (DL) -- He suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Cougars' opening game. Jason Scukanec (OL) -- Despite injuring his hand during overtime at Virginia, he is expected to play on Saturday. His ability to handle the snap will be important for BYU's offensive flow. Kalani Sitake (FB) -- He missed the end of the Virginia game with a groin strain, but will play tomorrow. Mike Lafitte (DB) -- A minor finger injury won't affect his ability to play this week. Air Force Scotty McKay (RB) -- He suffered a fractured right thumb last week when his hand was smashed by an opponenet's helmet. His soft cast should allow him to catch and carry the ball without problems. He is expected to start, but will probably not fill his usual kick and punt-returning role. Travis Logsdon (S) -- This backup safety is expected to see substantial playing time after dinging his shoulder last week. Matt McCraney (LB) -- He will miss the game, and possibly the season, with a left knee injury sustained against CS-Northridge. Tom Heier (RB) -- A backup to McKay, he tore an ACL in a pre-season practice and is out for the season. ================================= Statistics ================================= Team Statistics (National Ranking, Statistic) **May be skewed by AFA only having played one game BYU Air Force Category Rank Stat Rank Stat ---------------------------- ----- ----- ----- ----- Total Offense (yds/g) 43 382.5 1 698.0 Total Defense (yds/g) 87 431.0 17 227.0 Scoring Offense (pts/g) 59 20.5 6 55.0 Scoring Defense (pts/g) 78 32.0 13 6.0 Rushing Offense (yds/g) 93 45.5 1 583.0 Rushing Defense (yds/g) 71 163.5 56 125.0 Passing Offense (yds/g) 8 337.0 87 115.0 Passing Defense (efficiency) 84 267.5 15 102.0 Turnover Margin 79 -2.0 12 2.0 Punt Returns (yds/ret) 60 6.3 18 13.3 Kickoff Returns (yds/ret) ?? 22.5 ?? 19.7 Net Punting (yds/punt) 53 34.2 13 41.0 Individual Statistics - Players in the Top 50 Nationally Player Category Rank Statistic ----------------- --------------- ---- ------------ BYU Bret Engemann Pass Efficiency 34 136.0 rating Bret Engemann Total Offense 20 265.5 yds/g Jonathan Pittman Receiving Yards 26 99.0 yds/g Jaron Dabney Kickoff Returns 17 26.0 yds/ret Air Force Mike Thiessen Rushing 34 101.0 yds/gm Scott Becker Rushing 38 97.0 yds/gm Dallas Thompson Punting 41 41.5 yds/punt Scotty McKay Punt Returns 14 15.0 yds/ret Dave Adams Field Goals 13 2.0 fg/gm Dave Adams Scoring 48 11.0 pts/gm ================================= Hypothetical Game ================================= (If the the teams played an exactly average game) **May be skewed by AFA only having played one game BYU AFA ---- --- Score 13 44 Total Offense (yds) 305 565 Rushing Offense (yds) 85 373 Passing Offense (yds) 220 192 Turnovers 3 1 Fan Picks from the Fanzz Football Challenge 96% of you picked BYU to win this week. Offensively, the Cougars have been somewhat unpredictable, with scoring droughts that last a couple of quarters, and then outbursts of efficiency. Injuries and inexperience have contributed to that lack of continuity. The team hopes to come out and play a complete game on Thursday night. The biggest change for this week will be the insertion of junior quarterback Charlie Peterson into the lineup in place of a hobbled Bret Engemann. Peterson has shown great potential in practices and scrimmages during his time at BYU, but had a tough outing in the time he saw against Florida State. He attributes that to jitters, and (along with Cougar fans) hopes to settle down and play some ball this week. The Cougar defense has had its ups and downs as well this season, but has typically stiffened and held opponents to three-and-outs when the game was on the line. The Cougar D will get the chance to show some killer instinct against Mississippi State's offense, and improve on its stats. In a game that could be decided by field position, the Cougars need to improve on their turnover ratio of -2.33 (105th nationally). Mississippi State ranks fifth nationally at +3.0. Mississippi State is making its first trip west of the Central Time Zone in nearly twenty years, and becomes the first team from the Southeastern Conference to ever play in Cougar Stadium. Like BYU, the Bulldogs are opening their season with three road games. Unlike the Y, they have only played one so far, and have had time to rest since their September 2nd trip to Memphis. Jackie Sherrill, who has coached MSU since 1991, ranks 8th in total victories (165) among active coaches. He has also spent time as the head man at Washington State, Pitt, and Texas A&M. Most of those victories have come as a result of tremendous defense, and to some degree, in spite of the Bulldog offense, which has historically been less than ferocious. In fact, the Bulldogs were only able to trudge out 127 yards of total offense against a good defensive Memphis team. However, that was enough, because... The Mississippi State defense is GREAT. As the top rated defense in the country last year, they carried MSU to a 10-2 season and a top 10 ranking. After one game so far this season, they are fourth nationally in total defense, 2nd in passing defense, 1st in pass efficiency defense, 2nd in kickoff return defense, 3rd in sacks and 1st in turnover margin. True, Memphis may not be BYU, but it is impressive that the Bulldog defense only allowed them to penetrate the red zone once during the whole game. Also, Memphis turnovers led to all three Bulldog scores. 10 of the last 13 MSU opponents have been held under 100 yards rushing. Mississippi State is also solid on special teams, with an All-SEC placekicker and a punter who averaged over 45 yards in his first start a couple of weeks ago. ==================== Implications ==================== BYU opens its home season with a high profile opponent, as usual, which gives them a chance to make waves on the national level. While a win over the Bulldogs wouldn't help the Cougs in the MWC standings, it would boost morale after last week's loss to Air Force. MSU Coach Sherrill has complained about the Cougars' age advantage constantly for the last week, and the players are excited to end the talking and play some football. Mississippi State faces its biggest non-conference regular season game in years, and wants to show that true football is played in the SEC. A national showing on ESPN provides a perfect showcase for two teams whose coaches have combined for 610 career games. ==================== Players to Watch ==================== BYU #1, Brian McDonald (RB) -- Establishing a running game is essential if the Cougars are going to keep the Bulldogs at bay. With Luke Staley out again, McDonald will be called on to step up for the Cougs. Besides his 2,000+ rushing yards at Cerritos JC, he has shown that he can perform at the Division I level. #17, Charlie Peterson (QB) -- After playing Bret Engemann neck and neck for the starting position for the past year, he finally gets his chance to run the Cougar offense full-time. His mobility could be a big asset against MSU's pass rush, but the coaches will want him to play with patience and poise. #21, Isaac Kelley (LB) -- Like last year, he has been a consistent performer for the Cougs this season. The Cougars will need to keep the MSU offense on the sidelines and try to wear out their defense. Hans and Hoke (DT) -- Hans Olsen and Chris Hoke will look to put the "H Factor" to use against a weak MSU offense. Mississippi State #2, Fred Smoot (CB) -- A preseason All-American, this returning starter has been tabbed as a favorite for the Thorpe Award, which honors the nation's best defensive back. His speed and tackling ability makes him one of the most complete cover corners in the NCAA. He has snagged an interception in four consecutive games. #29, Pig Prather (S) -- An all-around athlete, he not only is a hard-hitting defensive back that's also on the Thorpe Candidate watch list, he sees plenty of action returning punts and kicks. Born Edward, he was nicknamed by an elementary teacher for his eating habits. #76, Pork Chop Womack (OL) -- We promise, these names are for real. This 6'3", 346-pound preseason All-SEC tackle has started 25 consecutive games for the Bulldogs and is considered to be one of the best blockers in the country. HIS actual name is Floyd, but he was dubbed, by his mother of all people, after a pro wrestler named Pork Chop Cash. #98, Mario Haggan (LB) -- In his first collegiate start a couple of weeks ago, this sophomore dominated. He registered 17 tackles, two QB sacks and one QB hurry, plus two pass deflections. Oh yeah, he also caused a fumble and had an interception. Both of his turnovers set up the MSU offense for their two touchdowns of the game. He played defensive end until moving to fill in for an injured Barris Grant. ==================== Records to Watch ==================== BYU holds an ongoing NCAA record of 315 consecutive games without being shut out. Owen Pochman can add to his personal scoring record at BYU. Margin Hooks needs only 60 yards to catch Chris Smith at #6 on the BYU career receiving yardage list. ==================== Injury Report ==================== BYU Bret Engemann (QB) -- Just before halftime last Saturday, he twisted his right ankle, resulting in a high ankle sprain. He's in a walking cast and on crutches, and is not expected to play tomorrow. Following football season, he is scheduled to have surgery on the ankle, which has given him problems in the past. Luke Staley (RB) -- On Sunday, he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery after tearing the meniscus cartilage in his right knee during the fourth quarter of the Air Force game (his ACL surgery during the off-season was on his left knee). He has practiced all week without a brace and could possibly play against the Bulldogs. Ben Horton (WR) -- He will probably be out one more week after undergoing surgery on a finger broken against Florida State. Kalani Sitake (FB) -- He has been hampered by a groin strain, but will play tomorrow. Mississippi State Barris Grant (LB) -- He will miss this week's game with a knee injury, but will make the trip to help the team with his leadership on the sidelines. Adam Joiner (TE) -- This backup tight end is out for at least four weeks with a tibial fracture of the knee joint. ==================== Statistics ==================== Team Statistics (National Ranking, Statistic) **May be skewed by Mississippi St. only having played one game BYU MSU Category Rank Stat Rank Stat ---------------------------- ----- ------ ----- ----- Total Offense (yds/g) 52 375.0 113 127.0 Total Defense (yds/g) 93 417.0 4 168.0 Scoring Offense (pts/g) 66 21.3 83 17.0 Scoring Defense (pts/g) 88 31.7 2 3.0 Rushing Offense (yds/g) 95 72.0 108 45.0 Rushing Defense (yds/g) 84 171.0 28 87.0 Passing Offense (yds/g) 13 303.0 108 82.0 Passing Defense (efficiency) 85 246.0 2 81.0 Turnover Margin 105 -2.33 5 3.0 Punt Returns (yds/ret) 63 8.4 45 10.3 Kickoff Returns (yds/ret) 86 16.8 2 41.0 Net Punting (yds/punt) 42 37.0 5 45.0 Individual Statistics - Players in the Top 50 Nationally Player Category Rank Statistic ------------------- ---------------- ---- ------------ BYU Bret Engemann Total Offense 28 249.0 yds/g Jonathan Pittman Receiving Yards 50 77.7 yds/g Aaron Edmonds Punting 48 39.9 yds/p Paul Peterson Kickoff Returns 46 21.6 yds/ret Owen Pochman Field Goals 14 1.67 fgs/gm Mississippi State Fred Smoot Interceptions 14 1.0 int/gm Mario Haggan Interceptions 32 1.0 int/gm Prentiss Cole Punting 7 45.5 yds/punt Dicenzo Miller Punt Returns 44 10.3 yds/ret Scott Westerfield Field Goals 29 1.0 fg/gm ==================== Hypothetical Game ==================== (If the the teams played an exactly average game) **May be skewed by Mississippi St. only having played one game BYU MSU --- --- Score 12 24 Total Offense (yds) 272 272 Rushing Offense (yds) 80 108 Passing Offense (yds) 192 164 Turnovers 4 1 ==================== Fan Picks from the Fanzz Football Challenge ==================== 83% of you picked BYU to win this week.
