The Cougars' 49 points in the first half tied a stadium record, and their 437 rushing yards fell just shy of the record (465 in 1958 vs. Montana. The team also broke eight Mountain West Conference single-game team and two individual records. BYU has now appeared in five preseason classics, more than any other team in the country. Cougar faithful hope to see their team continue to rewrite the record books. Defensively, BYU is expected to be a pretty good team this season, but got off to a questionable start against the Green Wave, allowing three touchdowns in the first quarter of play. They started to wear down Tulane's offense as the game wore on, however, and only surrendered two more scores for the rest of the game. Watch for a tighter defensive effort this weekend. Nevada would like to keep their undefeated status in Utah County, because although they're historically 0-3 vs. the Cougars in Reno, they've managed two 6-6 ties against BYU in Provo. Chances are, however, that the Wolf Pack will leave Provo with their seventh consecutive season-opening loss. Since moving to Division I football in 1992, the Nevada has been less impressive than they used to be. Last year's move from the Big West to the WAC, coupled with a roster full of underclassmen, made it even harder for them to find success, as they skidded to a woeful 2-10 record. However, 10 starters return on offense, along with eight on defense, plus the punter. That could be a good or a bad thing, but chances are the team will win about four games this year. One of the Wolf Pack's biggest problems last season was their rushing defense -- only two teams nationally had a worse average than their 232.5 yards per game. However, Coach Chris Tormey was the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington before five successful years as head coach at the University of Idaho, and then his inaugural season at Nevada in 2000. Beefing up the defense and teaching them sound fundamentals is one of his main goals. ================== Implications ================== BYU definitely should have the upper hand in this game. Whether they will win may not be the question, but rather by how far. Although Coach Crowton has downplayed his advantage, this will probably be a game that will allow him to experiment with his team. Nevada hopes to put up a good fight and keep the game respectable. This game was scheduled when the Wolf Pack were considered a high-powered passing team that could keep up with anybody in a score-fest. ================== Players to Watch ================== -- BYU -- #4, Jernaro Gilford (CB) -- He and his fellow defensive backs will get tested by Nevada's pass-oriented offense. #6, Luke Staley (RB) -- He's back in top form now that he's healthy and injury-free. Nevada's rushing defense may not be as good as Tulane's, so he may be able to maintain his double digit yard-per-carry average for another week. #11, Brandon Doman (QB) -- Things have come full circle for the "Domanator." It's been a long time coming, but he's making the most of his time at the helm of the BYU offense. His athleticism and improved passing make him a dangerous weapon. #92, Ryan Denney (DE) -- Once he got warmed up last week, he made life miserable for Tulane's quarterback. His pass rushing will be a key to keeping David Neill out of his rhythm. -- Nevada -- #11, David Neill (QB) -- Now a four year starter for the Wolf Pack, Neill is a legitimate NFL prospect with great size and arm strength. He is Nevada's career leader in passing yards (8,993) and total offense (9,427), and will probably hold every school passing record by the end of this season. As a true freshman in 1998, he set NCAA records for single game pass efficiency (295.46 vs. Idaho), touchdowns in a season by a freshman (29), and single game passing yards for a freshman (611 vs. New Mexico State). His stats haven't been quite so gaudy the last two years as his supporting cast hasn't been as good and Nevada has played tougher teams, but he's still an experienced, proficient passer. #55, Jorge Cordova (DE) -- Last season as a redshirt freshman, this 6'2", 235 pounder led the Wolf Pack in solo tackles, total tackles, and sacks. He missed one game due to injury and started all 11 others. #80, Nate Burleson (WR) -- This junior led the Wolf Pack in scoring last year, hauling in eight TD catches throughout the season. His 57 catches for 921 yards gave him an average of over 16 yards per catch. #99, Johnnie Thomas (DT) -- This transfer is big and quick, and made a name for himself at two different junior colleges in California and Mississippi, being named a JC All-American. ================== Records to Watch ================== BYU holds an ongoing NCAA record of 325 consecutive games without being shut out. Gary Crowton will try to stay unbeaten as the Cougars' head coach. :-) ================== Injury Report ================== -- BYU -- Ryan Denney (DE) -- He will play, despite a sore hamstring that kept him out of practice on Wednesday. Brett Keisel (DE) -- Denney's other half rested on Wednesday, too, because of the hamstring he pulled a couple of weeks ago. Brian McDonald-Ashford (RB) -- He insists that a break on the tip of his left thumb won't affect his game today since he's right-handed. Levi Madarieta (S) -- Slated as a starter this season, a broken rib kept him out of the Tulane game. He will play today, and will probably start, but will still share a lot of time with freshman Aaron Francisco. Reno Mahe (WR) -- His comeback from a broken foot to play in the Tulane game was nothing short of miraculous. Oh yeah, after the game he mentioned to the coaches that he sprained his shoulder in the first quarter. He should be fine for the game. Mike Nielsen (RB) -- He suffered a torn ACL in his right knee last week and is out for the season. Paul Peterson (RB) -- He is probable for Saturday after missing last week's game because of an appendectomy during fall camp. Jim Roberts (DE) -- He bruised a knee on Wednesday, but will probably be fine by game day. Brandon Stephens (DL) -- He's questionable after spraining his MCL against Tulane. Teag Whiting (OL) -- An off-season scuffle in Salt Lake earned him a one-game suspension from Coach Crowton. This will be the game. -- Nevada -- Humphrey Garrett (S) -- A sprained ankle has him on crutches and will probably keep him out for at least this game. Cody Johnson (C) -- A knee sprain caused him to miss nearly two weeks of practice. Though he started practicing again this Tuesday, his status for Saturday is unknown. J.D. Morscheck (DE) -- He'll be suspended for the game because of his involvement in an altercation at an off-campus party. ================== Statistics ================== Fan Picks from the CougarFan.com Football Challenge 98% of you picked BYU to win this week.
