Matching up against winless FSU should give the Cougar offense the chance to extend the offensive continuity that it showed last week. As in seemingly every game this year, the Cougars will depend on the defensive backs to slow an opponent's productive passing game. The defensive backfield's solid play throughout the season has allowed the front seven to concentrate on stopping the run. BYU is currently ranked #9 in the nation for rushing defense, allowing a mere 75 yards per game. Watch for them to get through the offensive line and put pressure on the quarterback this week. Fresno State is averaging 244 yards per game through the air, and will probably test the skies this week in lieu of running against BYU's tough front line. Their offensive line is banged up right now, and had to be shifted around against Nevada-Reno last week. The Bulldog defense has had a hard time containing opposing teams so far this year, giving up 400 yards and 30 points per game, as well as allowing opponents to convert nearly half of their 3rd down attempts. Special teams could make a difference in this game, as both teams have had standout games from several individuals. The Bulldogs boast the 16th ranked punt returner in the nation in Payton Williams, and the 21st ranked place kicker, Jeff Hannah. Those two positions are countered by BYU's Aaron Roderick (#10 punt returner in the nation) and Owen Pochman (#14 kicker in the nation). ============================== Implications ============================== BYU travels to Fresno for possibly the last time, as they will be leaving the WAC after this season. Being the first conference game of the year, it is important for the Cougars to come out of it with a win. It's been over a year since the Y has won on the road, and they desperately want to break that five game losing skid that includes games at Rice, UTEP, New Mexico, Alabama, and Washington. Fresno State is a program with a storied past that is hurting for a win right now. All three of its losses this season have been close ones to good teams (Colorado, Texas Tech, and Nevada-Reno), but that doesn't change their goose egg in the win column. They would love nothing more than to hand BYU a loss and get a fresh start on the season as they enter WAC play. ============================== Players to Watch ============================== BYU Drevin Millerik (QB) -- BYU found its passing game last week in this multi-faceted player, who threw for 313 yards and 2 touchdowns. Rob Morris (LB) -- He is BYU's defensive point leader on the year, and is a real team leader. Margin Hooks (WR) -- He had a breakout game against Murray State, recording the fifth highest receiving yardage total in the nation last week with 5 catches for 179 yards, while several other long bombs were just out of his reach. Jason Walker (WS) -- At one interception per game, he's ranked #2 in the nation. His pickoff in the end zone last week thwarted Murray State's attempt to get on the scoreboard first. Fresno State Jaime Kimbrough (RB) -- This 5'8" 205 lb. fullback IS Fresno State's running game, averaging 104 yards rushing, and 157 all purpose yards (19th nationally) per game. Billy Volek (QB) -- He leads the Bulldog offense that has passed the ball successfully this year. He's accounted for an average of 226 yards of total offense per game. Tim Skipper (LB) -- Even though he's just a sophomore, and only measures 5'7", he's the Bulldogs' leading returning tackler, with 117 last year. ============================== Records to Watch ============================== BYU holds the current NCAA record of 290 consecutive games without being shut out. ============================== Injury Report ============================== BYU Will Snowden (RB) -- He hasn't played since the opening game of the year because of a hamstring pull. Brad Martin (LB) -- Ever since his car accident on September 11th, he's been suffering from whiplash, which has given him severe headaches. He hasn't participated in practices since, and was held out of the Murray State game to allow his muscles to relax. He should be ready to go on Saturday. Chris Ellison (SS) -- He was also held out of the Murray State game to rest his partially separated shoulder. He is expected to play. A 6-foot-2, 245-pound sophomore, Ofahengaue is the Cougars' third-leading receiver with eight catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. His absence would make junior Carlos Nuno the starter. Nuno is a 6-4, 245-pounder from Modesto, Calif., who was recruited by Fresno State. Nuno moved to tight end from the defensive line last spring, and has played in all four of the Cougars' games but has caught only one pass for 21 yards. He just does it. And well. Four games into the season, the BYU senior wide receiver is the WAC's leading punt returner, and he ranks 10th in the nation with his 17.4-yard return average. It's a stark contrast to last season, when Roderick fumbled a punt against Arizona State and let it so affect him that he lost his punt-returning job to Jaron Dabney and never did rediscover his confidence -- even on offense. Dabney went on to become the WAC Mountain Division Freshman of the Year, but failed to make grades and was ruled ineligible for this season. That left the returning job to Roderick, who has made the most of it. ``I love it,'' he said. ``I don't catch a lot of balls on offense. I'm not the go-to guy, I just play my role. But for now, the losses keep piling up. Last weekend, their football teams posted a subpar 3-5 record, including three humiliating defeats to opponents from the lowly Big West Conference. The latest setback has come at the hands of a relatively obscure volleyball league. Because of legal obstacles, officials from the departing schools can't christen their new league the Mountain Pacific Athletic Conference (MPAC), their top choice. The California-based Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, a 14- school collegiate men's volleyball league made up of teams from the Pac-10, Big West and WAC (including BYU), owns trademark rights to the "Mountain Pacific" name, thus spiking the MPAC possibility. Still up in the air for the Cougars is who will start at quarterback. Regardless of who gets the nod, BYU's coaching staff has stated that they will simplify the offensive game plan this week, hoping to eliminate costly mental miscues that have come because of many players' lack of experience. BYU coughed up six fumbles against Fresno State, and will look to take care of the ball better this week. The Cougar defense has vowed to come out with more intensity than they did last week, which was perhaps their poorest showing of the season. However, there were moments of greatness, such as holding the Bulldogs scoreless after they had 1st and goal at the one yard line. Amazingly enough, the defense has had a similar heroic goal line stand in each of the past four games. UNLV brings a team to Provo that ranks near the bottom nationally in most offensive and defensive categories. They are the owners of a ten game losing streak, and are looking for their first ever WAC road victory, having lost their last 23 games on the road. On the bright side, over the past three weeks, the Rebels have scored more points in each game than in the game before, and have held their opponents to fewer points than the previous week. Senior Chad Reed will probably become the third Rebel to start at quarterback this year, after doing a good job in the fourth quarter of last week's Nevada, Reno game. The team only completed seven passes last week, but exhibited a new-found running game, racking up 268 yards on the ground. The Rebels have had some bright moments against BYU. In 1981, they came into Provo and handed the 8th ranked Cougars a 45 - 41 homecoming loss, ending BYU's nation leading 17 game win streak. They would love to see history repeat itself on Saturday. ============================== Implications ============================== BYU needs to come out of this game with a win if they are to be a WAC contender this season. A win will also keep the Cougars undefeated at home on the year, and will help to re-establish confidence that was shaken last week in Fresno. UNLV is battling for a win after opening their season with tough games against two Big 10 teams, as well as Colorado State, Air Force, and rival Nevada, Reno. ============================== Players to Watch ============================== BYU Margin Hooks (WR) -- He had another good game against Fresno State, and seems to be getting more comfortable in the offense. Rob Morris (LB) -- He leads the WAC in tackles for losses, with 10 on the year. Special Teams -- Besides outstanding individual efforts from Aaron Roderick (punt returns), Mike Rigell (kick returns), and Owen Pochman (placekicking), the unit as a whole has performed well. In the past four games, they have blocked three kicks, including last week's field goal attempt block by Brian Gray that was returned for a touchdown by Heshi Robertson. UNLV Damon Williams (WR) -- He's the career reception leader in Rebel history, and has caught a pass in each of the past 39 games. Duane "Toy Train" James (WR) -- This freshman sensation is the #4 punt returner in the nation, with a 19 yard average. Last week against Nevada, Reno, he took one back 78 yards for a touchdown. Talance Sawyer (DE) -- This pre-season First Team All-WAC selection has 8 tackles for a loss so far this year. James Sunia (LB) -- He's only a freshman, but is a team captain, and leads UNLV with 59 tackles on the year, including 17 against Air Force. ============================== Records to Watch ============================== BYU holds the current NCAA record of 291 consecutive games without being shut out. ============================== Injury Report ============================== BYU Drew Miller (QB) -- He suffered a slight shoulder separation and deltoid sprain in his throwing arm when he was slammed to the ground after releasing what turned out to be a 58 yard TD strike to Carlos Nuno in the Fresno State game. It's probable that he'll be able to play this week. Tevita Ofahengaue (TE) -- He missed the trip to Fresno State because of a bruised kidney and a hip pointer. Will Snowden (RB) -- He still hasn't found his way back onto the field since his hamstring pull against Alabama, but he is reportedly healthy. Jimmy Richards (C) -- He reinjured the shoulder on his snapping arm last week, but should play. Wide receiver Margin Hooks said the alterations will allow athletes to be athletes and do individual things to help the team out. In the Tongan language, "Maw-hee" means underwear. BYU tight end Tevita Ofahengaue, who bruised a kidney in the Murray State game and stayed home from last week's road trip to Fresno State, returned to the practice field this week. While his teammates on offense were suffering through first-half turnovers last Saturday, Ofahengaue was home in Provo, driving around town, trying not to go crazy. "I didn't watch the game until the third quarter," Ofahengaue said. "My wife updated me there were four fumbles. I said, 'What? There is no way.' Part of this tradition has been a few families that have had multiple brothers play for the team. Two of those families currently have members on the team. Mark Maughan is a freshman hooker for the BYU rugby team. His older brother Peter played for the team two years ago. There were, however, a few twists of fate along the way. Backup Drew Miller, who has been splitting time with Feterik as of late, made his usual entrance in the second quarter but was sidelined with a grade 2 shoulder separation before halftime rolled around. The bulk of the duties, therefore, were performed by Feterik --- and he didn't disappoint. Wide receiver Margin Hooks, who made five catches for 125 yards including an 83-yard touchdown strike from Feterik, said he needed only one word to describe the performance by the BYU starter. "Excellent," Hooks said in crediting Feterik's heads-up play and correct reads. Ben Horton, who joined Hooks for team-high honors with five receptions, agreed. He also ventured his opinion as to why. "Kevin's a great quarterback. He hasn't been messing up," Horton said. "If we (the rest of the Cougars) do what we're supposed to do, he'll have 300 yards every game." After reaggravating his slightly separated shoulder, Miller's status for next Saturday's game at Hawaii will remain unsettled until the team leaves for the islands. The offense showed depth and continuity, and was led by the impressive play of Kevin Feterik after Drew Miller was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury. Miller should return to share time with Feterik again this week, and the Cougars hope to continue their offensive proficiency with whoever's playing. First and foremost on the minds of the team is to get their first road win since an overtime squeaker at SMU in September of last year. Defensively, the Cougars are coming off of the third best performance in BYU history, holding UNLV to a mere 98 yards and 5 first downs, much of which came after the first unit was on the bench with the game safely out of reach. Their dominating performance helped them to achieve the #8 ranking in the nation for total defense. If they have a chance to hold an opponent scoreless this year, this is it. The Rainbows come into the game ranked dead last (112 of 112) in the NCAA for scoring offense, managing a mere 8 points per game. Hawai'i is the third winless team that the Cougars have faced in the past three weeks. Their losing streak of 11 games began last year in Provo, when they succumbed 17 - 3 to a Paul Shoemaker - Drew Miller homecoming attack. However, the Rainbows are always dangerous in Honolulu, and are known for breaking out for huge games against BYU in their home element. In 1989 and 1990, the Rainbows thrashed beleaguered Cougar teams, winning 56 - 14 and 59 - 28, respectively. The Hawai'i defense has played respectably throughout the year, especially considering the amount of time that they've spent on the field each game. They're ranked 56th in the nation in total defense, allowing 356 yards per game. As a unit, they're ranked 5th in WAC for 3rd down conversion defense. ============================== Implications ============================== BYU once again needs a win to stay in the race for the WAC Pacific Division championship. Because of post-season implications, every game is a big one from here on out. Obviously, as the very heavy favorites in this contest, BYU is expected to dominate the game, and anything short of a controlling win would reflect poorly on the team. Hawai'i has always had intense feelings when it comes to playing BYU, partly because the Y always manages to sign many of the top athletes from the islands. This is possibly the Rainbow's last chance to embarrass the Cougars in Honolulu. In May, when BYU and seven other schools announced their plans to leave the WAC, the UH President vowed that they would never again play any of the departing programs. ============================== Players to Watch ============================== BYU Kevin Feterik (QB) -- His 319 yards passing last week were the most by a BYU quarterback since he threw for 345 against Utah State on October 3, 1997. He ranks 34th in the nation with a pass efficiency rating of 128. Mike Rigell (WR) -- He continues to excel in his kick returning duties, and is coming into his own as a receiver, as well, with an exciting TD catch last week against UNLV. Jason Walker (SS) -- With his interception against UNLV last week, he moved into the #1 spot in the nation for picks, grabbing .83 per game. Hawai'i Charles Tharp (RB) -- Even though he's only a sophomore, he ranks #13 in all-time rushing for the Rainbows. He was named the WAC Pacific Division Freshman of the Year in '97, after leading Hawai'i in rushing and receiving. Chad Shrout (P) -- Last year, he ranked in the top five punters in the nation all season, finishing with a 46.1 yard average. He's currently ranked #4. Quincy LeJay (DB) -- He ranks 33rd in the NCAA for interceptions. He returned one for 49 yards at Utah, and another for 41 yards at San Diego State. ============================== Records to Watch ============================== BYU holds the current NCAA record of 292 consecutive games without being shut out. LaVell Edwards, with 237 wins under his belt, is currently 8th in all-time NCAA victories. At that time, Roger Reid was the head coach and the Cougars were still considered one of the WAC's top teams. Both Christensen and Cooper, who made significant contributions as freshmen, helped BYU to a 15-win campaign in 1995-96. Then came the next season, which saw the firing of Reid and the program sink into an abyss. While Christensen and Cooper were beginning the two best years of their lives, the Cougars were suffering through their worst year ever, finishing with a 1-25 record. "I think I timed it just right, don't you?" Christensen joked. "I'm grateful I didn't have to go through it. I feel bad for the guys that did." Now they return to Provo to defend their unbeaten home mark of 3-0, facing the upstart Spartans of San Jose State. The offense is beginning to gel as the young skill players learn the system and their duties within it. The passing game has been the biggest benefactor, as quarterbacks and receivers appear to be on the same page, and are making big plays. The one area in which the Cougars desperately hope to improve is in that of turnovers. On the year, the offense has coughed up 25 fumbles, losing 12. The butterfingers syndrome has cost the Y dearly, as opponents have often capitalized on the drops, including returning three for touchdowns. The Cougars boast the #9 defense in the country, allowing only 269 yards per game, including a stingy 89 on the ground. Their one thin spot is their depth in the defensive backfield. Rob Warcup and Doug Henstrom did a good job filling in for injured Brian Gray at Hawai'i, but "the Gray death's" return is anxiously anticipated. San Jose State brings a balanced offensive attack to Provo. At times, they have really clicked, such as when erstwhile BYU gunner Brian Vye led the team to a victory over Stanford, but the Spartans have sputtered occasionally as well, prompting Coach Dave Baldwin to start true freshman QB Marcus Arroyo and platoon him with junior Chris Kasteler. SJSU's pass defense has been good this year, limiting opponents to 165 yards per game. On the ground, however, teams have literally run over the Spartans, amassing an average of 256 yards per game, including Virginia's 446 yards. The San Jose special teams have also been lackluster, doing a poor job on punt return defense. ============================== Implications ============================== BYU looks to remain undefeated at home for the season, and more importantly, to move up in the WAC rankings. The Cougars, along with three other teams (Utah, SJSU, and UTEP) are tied for 2nd in the Pacific Division rankings at 2-1, behind 3-0 San Diego State. Of note is that all of those teams remain on BYU's schedule. Since Fresno State lost to the Utes last week, the Cougars control their own destiny, and can return to Las Vegas by winning the rest of their games. San Jose State knows that the winner of this game will be one step closer to the WAC championship. A victory in Provo over the Cougars would give them confidence that they could run the table and take the Pacific Division title. ============================== Players to Watch ============================== BYU Kevin Feterik (QB) -- He had another impressive game last week, completing 20 of 26 passes. He's thrown 68 straight passes without an interception. Mike Rigell (WR) -- His 96 yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week in Honolulu put the game out of reach and vaulted him to the #4 spot in the national rankings. He also continued to excel in his receiving duties, making another great touchdown catch. Rob Morris (LB) -- He's proving to be the epitome of hard nosed defensive football. He leads the Cougars on the year with 53 defensive points. Junior Mahe (RB) -- His Barry Sanders-esque moves generate excitement and yards. The talented freshman is currently averaging 5.9 yards per carry. San Jose State Oliver Newell (WR) -- He's only one touchdown reception shy of the SJSU career mark. He's had a TD grab in each of the past four games. Deonce Whitaker (RB) -- Averaging 5.9 yards per carry, he leads the Spartans in rushing touchdowns on the season. He tallies an impressive 133 all-purpose yards per game. Lyle West (FS) -- Last year he led the Spartan defense with 128 tackles, and has a team best 74 so far this season, including 17 against UTEP. Alfonso Moran (LB) -- Just a sophomore, he's making his presence felt, averaging 12 tackles per game over the last month. ============================== Records to Watch ============================== BYU holds the current NCAA record of 293 consecutive games without being shut out. LaVell Edwards can take sole possession of the #7 spot for career victories on Saturday. But th= ere was a time when the Cougars and Spartans nearly sparked a national incident with their meeting on a football field. The year was 1968, and the national civil-rights movement was at its anxious peak. The all-white Cougars widely were viewed as racist because of the church's policy, and already had encountered an angry mob of proteste= rs before a game against Wyoming in Laramie. Then, when they went to San Jose for the last game of a 2-8 season, they found a community on the verge of boiling over. Seven black players on the Spartan team had vowed to boycott the game against the Cougars in protest. The school threatened to revoke their scholarships, but that sparked the rest of SJSU's black athletes -- including sprinter John Carlos, who had been disqualified from the Mexico City Olympics for raising a gloved fist = on the medal stand -- to promise to quit and discourage other black athletes from attending. He is, after all, the man who really got this quarterback thing rolling at BYU. The fact that McMahon was back in town was news enough. He hasn't made a habit of returning. Until recently, he's made it a point to visit Provo as often as John Glenn visits space. "It's just that, for McMahon, there were other places to be. The former BYU all-America quarterback met his wife at BYU, and played his football there. Otherwise, 17 years after leaving school by special invitation, he hasn't had a lot of reasons to come back. He loved the football, but the rest was torture. "But on Thursday, McMahon was relaxed and happy. The honor code people weren't anywhere to be seen and McMahon didn't bring any beer.
