"With Mark Michaelis starting things with a pair of baskets, BYU went on a 14-1 run to go ahead 30-24. Denver pulled even at 34-34 on Ty Church's 3-point basket with 1:10 to go, but BYU took a 37-34 lead at the half on a Jacob Hawkins free throw and tip-in. "BYU, which shot 64 percent in the second half, opened a 46-36 lead with 15:04 left. Bowden Wednesday accepted the coaching position at Clemson and said that he will not coach the ninth-ranked Green Wave against Brigham Young in the Liberty Bowl on December 31. "After careful thought and consideration, I have decided to leave Tulane and continue my coaching career elsewhere,'' he said. "This was not an easy decision. Tulane and the city of New Orleans have been very good to me and my family, both personally and professionally. I leave here with nothing but fond memories.'' Bowden will be introduced Thursday at a 3 p.m. EST news conference, Clemson officials said." ====================================== Arizona's Edgerson Recants Denial, Apologizes for Elbowing BYU's Jepsen The Salt Lake Tribune (11/30/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/nov/11301998/sports/64256.htm "The day after knocking BYU center Bret Jepsen unconscious with a vicious elbow to the face, Arizona forward Eugene Edgerson had a change of story -- and a change of heart. Edgerson denied he purposely decked Jepsen following the Wildcats' 78-74 overtime victory over the Cougars Saturday night at the Marriott Center. On Sunday, he formally apologized for his actions. ``I lost control of my emotions,'' Edgerson said in a statement. ``We are all human beings, and there is no way we should treat one another like I did in the game. I sincerely apologize to Bret Jepsen and hope he is doing better.'' ====================================== Articles about the BYU-Denver Basketball Game http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,20000627,00.html? http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12021998/sports/64553.htm ====================================== BYU's Yancey Raised Big, Can Make it Big The Salt Lake Tribune (12/2/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12021998/sports/64473.htm "Daren Yancey may be one of only a few modern college football players who would fit, all comfortable like, in an old episode of Bonanza. You could see him saddling up alongside Little Joe, properly requesting permission -- was the Ponderosa the only place where grown men had to ask Pa before leaving the house? -- to ride on into town, or head off hunting rabbits, or go punch doggies out on the north 40. Because Yancey is . . . Hoss Cartwright in pads. "The BYU defensive tackle was born and raised in Riverton, Idaho, which is just a hocked loogie from Blackfoot, on 200 acres of God's grandest land. There, along the banks of the Snake River, on his father's ranch, Yancey grew big -- 6-foot-6, 305 pounds -- and strong. He didn't sit around watching TV. He didn't play video games. He didn't lounge in the comfort of indoor heating. He didn't idolize pro athletes. Yancey worked." ====================================== Trench warfare should decide WAC title The Deseret News (12/2/98) http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,20000631,00.html? "Air Force halfback Jemal Singleton is expecting an all-out war in Saturday's WAC championship game with BYU. And he's fairly confident the enemy will launch a counter assault against the Falcons' ground game. After all, the Air Force is the nation's second-best running team with an average output of 280.9 yards. "We're prepared," Singleton said. "But it's going to be pretty tough." "Espcially considering the opposition's strength is defending the run. The Cougars, who've allowed just 89 yards per contest, are ranked third in rushing defense. This one, as they like to say in the military, is destined to be decided in the trenches." ====================================== BYU's D-Line Shuffle Could Stump Air Force The Salt Lake Tribune (12/2/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12021998/sports/64471.htm "All season, the BYU Cougars have shuffled eight players along their defensive line. And they have had occasion to use more than just their three starting linebackers. That could help a lot on Saturday. With 17th-ranked Air Force likely to run its dreaded option as many as 60 times in the WAC championship game in Las Vegas, BYU's ability to keep fresh men along the line of scrimmage should help keep the favored Falcons from wearing the Cougs down as much as they otherwise might. ``We're pretty deep along our front seven, and that helps us out a lot,'' said middle linebacker Rob Morris. ``Any time you have a team that's really run-heavy, guys get tired.'' There is scarcely a team in the entire country as run-heavy as the Falcons; by rushing for 281 yards per game, they rank behind only Army. But the Cougars have been virtually impenetrable against the run. They rank third in the nation by allowing just 89 yards per game, and in their last game, held Utah's Mike Anderson -- the WAC's leading rusher -- to 29 yards on 14 carries." ====================================== Jensen on the mend, could practice soon The Deseret News (12/2/98) http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,20000698,00.html? "BYU center Bret Jepsen, who was knocked unconscious when Arizona's Eugene Edgerson intentionally elbowed him in the face during the Wildcats' 78-74 overtime victory in the Marriott Center Saturday, may be cleared to begin light workouts later this week. The 6-foot-11, 250-pound junior suffered a concussion in the incident that led to a public apology from Edgerson. Tests Monday night indicated no swelling of the brain, but Jepsen is still suffering from severe headaches and nausea. He had cotton swabs in both ears Tuesday as he watched from the bench in street clothes as his teammates defeated Denver 89-71. Earlier in the day, Jepsen attended one of his school classes. "Meanwhile, off the court, tape of the incident has passed through the commissioners' offices of both the Western Athletic and Pacific-10 conferences. Neither has jurisdiction over interconference games, so any penalties or sanctions against Edgerson must come from Arizona officials. And thus far, the Wildcats have yet to issue a suspension." ====================================== For Air Force QB Morgan, option is to beat Cougars The Deseret News (12/1/98) http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,20000457,00.html? "Longtime Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry calls Blane Morgan one of the best quarterbacks to don a Falcons uniform. Air Force QB Blane Morgan hopes a sprained ankle heals enough for him to lead Falcons to first WAC title Saturday against BYU. And that's not faint praise. After all, what BYU has been to the passing quarterback over the years in the WAC, Air Force has been to the option quarterback. Former Falcon stars to roll (not to mention pitch and dive) off the assembly line in Colorado Springs include Bart Weiss, Dee Dowis and Morgan's older brother, Beau. "Blane, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior, appears to have been cast from that same mold. At least when he's healthy. Right now, Morgan is nursing an ankle sprain, making him questionable for Saturday's game against BYU. When unhampered by injury, Morgan can run, he can throw and he can take his team to the end zone with regularity (the Falcons averaged 37 points a game in 1998). He also possesses those intangible qualities that rank him right up there with the likes of Weiss, Dowis and Beau Morgan." ====================================== BYU, Utah volleyball squads earn NCAA berths The Deseret News (11/30/98) http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,20000278,00.html? "BYU and Utah were awarded berths in the 1998 NCAA Division I women's volleyball tournament Sunday. The Cougars (28-3) and Utes (20-9) are among six Western Athletic Conference teams (Hawaii, Fresno State, San Jose State and Colorado State are the others) invited to the 64-team championship field. The single-elimination competition gets under way later this week at campus sites. "The sixth-ranked Cougars (28-3) will host first- and second-round matches in their 17th NCAA appearance. BYU, the second seed in the Central Division, faces Coastal Carolina (23-12) Friday after Kansas State (18-11) meets Georgetown (24-5). Both matches, as well as Saturday's meeting between the winners, will be held at the Smith Fieldhouse. "The Cougars enter the competition on the heels of a heartbreaking loss to Hawaii in a thrilling championship match of the WAC tournament. The Rainbow Wahine prevailed 15-12, 21-19, 13-15, 16-18, 24-22. "That's one of the best volleyball matches I've seen in my career,"said veteran BYU coach Elaine Michaelis, "and that's going back a long way." After Hawaii tied the score at 13 in the fifth game, the lead changed seven times before the match was concluded." ====================================== Young, 49ers beat Giants on Monday Night "Garrison Hearst ran for 166 yards and a touchdown and Steve Young threw for 2 scores as the San Francisco 49ers put on an offensive clinic en route to a key 31-7 victory over the anemic New York Giants." When the Cougars take the field at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday, the seasoned members of the team will surely remember the legendary overtime win against a previously unbeaten Wyoming team in 1996. With that win, the Cougars became the first champions of a 16 team Western Athletic Conference, and this week they get the chance to be the last. The Y's offense has been firing on all cylinders as of late, having racked up 400+ yards of total offense in each of the past three games. Interestingly enough, those three games were played against opponents who had all beaten the Y in their previous meetings. Air Force will be the fourth team in a row with whom the Cougars have a score to settle, having defeated BYU the last time they met, in the 1995 season opener. The Cougar defense will have their #3 national ranking versus the run put to the test when they line up against the vaunted Air Force wishbone attack, which ranks #2 in the NCAA for rushing offense. The lopsidedness of the Falcons' offense will probably allow the Y to crowd the line of scrimmage and concentrate on what they do best -- stopping the run. The ability of the defensive front line to control the line of scrimmage will probably be the deciding factor in the game. So far this year, BYU has been consistently solid against the option, shutting down each and every team that has attempted to run it against them. An impressive fact about the Cougar defense is that they have only allowed opponents to score on 54% of their trips inside the red zone. They also only allow opponents to convert 30% of their 4th down attempts, whereas the Cougar offense makes good on 67% of theirs. Air Force is probably the best football team that the Cougars will face all year long. Statistically, they rank near the top of the NCAA in nearly every category imaginable. Their impressive 281 yards per game on the ground is what you would expect from an Air Force team, but this year's squad has shown that it can throw the ball as well as any in recent years. The Falcon offense has converted an impressive 52% of their 3rd down attempts this year. Starting quarterback Blane Morgan, younger brother of Beau, has a sprained ankle that may keep him out of the game. The Falcons will play in the WAC Championship for the first and last time before departing to form the Mountain West Conference along with BYU and six other teams next year. Actually, every team that has played in the WAC Championship (BYU - Wyoming, 1996; Colorado State - New Mexico, 1997; BYU - Air Force, 1998) will be leaving for the MWC. Although Air Force has only managed 2 wins in their 18 games against the Cougars, they won the last meeting convincingly in 1995. Over the past five games, the Falcon defense has suffocated opponents, giving up a stingy average of 8 points per game. Like BYU, Air Force fields possibly its best defensive unit ever, and is currently ranked #9 in the country for total defense. The cadets are giving up just ten more yards per game than the #7 Cougar defense. Size could be a factor in this game, and if the BYU offensive line can wear down the smaller Air Force defensive front, the Cougars could have a big day running the ball. One of the biggest disparities between these two teams is in the turnover category. The Falcons rank #3 in the country with a plus 17 turnover margin on the year, whereas the Cougars rank at #92, with a minus 8 margin. ============================== Implications ============================== BYU has a golden opportunity to defeat a nationally ranked program and jump into the rankings themselves. Also on the line is the Cougars' 7 game winning streak, the longest since the 1996 season. The Y has long been the class of the WAC, winning 19 titles during LaVell Edwards' 26 seasons at the helm, and one last championship would be a fitting end to the WAC era. Air Force can gain even more credibility with the pollsters and with a nationwide audience by knocking off a great BYU team. Winning Saturday's game would give the Falcons bragging rights and mark them as the team to beat in the Mountain West Conference. ======================= Pre-Game Tailgate Party ======================= Join BYU fans and alumni before the game at the Cougar Club/BYU Alumni Association Pep Rally. Come to the BYU tent northwest of the stadium! Free pom poms. Performances by the BYU Band, Cheer Squad, and Cosmo. Speakers include BYU President Merrill J. Bateman, Athletic Director Rondo Fehlberg, Cougar Club National President Lee Brower, and BYU Alumni Association President Paul Gilbert. Former BYU players (Steve Sarkisian, Chad Lewis, and Ethan Pochman) and Las Vegas media personalities will attend. The rally will be held from 8:30-9:45 am, with the program begin at approximately 8:45 am. ============================== Players to Watch ============================== BYU #7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- With 15 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions on the year, he has shown why he's rated in the top 20 quarterbacks in the country. #10, Brad Martin (LB) -- He was a one man wrecking crew against New Mexico's attempts to run the option. #16, Ronney Jenkins (RB) -- He seems intent on scoring points and helping the team to win, and is shattering records along the way. #44, Rob Morris (LB) -- For the entire season, he has been the heart and soul of BYU's defense. The Cougars will depend on him heavily as they face run after run on Saturday. ============================== Records to Watch ============================== Ronney Jenkins currently stands at #2 in the BYU single season rushing standings with 1216 yards. If he can break out for 171 more, he'll surpass Pete VanValkenburg (1386 yards, 1972) for the top spot in Cougar history. Ronney Jenkins needs 7 yards to surpass Brian McKenzie (1954 yards, 1996 - 1997) for the #6 ranking in the BYU career rushing standings. BYU holds the current NCAA record of 298 consecutive games without being shut out. ============================== Comparison Statistics ============================== (National Ranking, Statistic) BYU Air Force Category Rank Stat Rank Stat ------------------------ ---- ------ ---- ------ Total Offense (yds/g) 44 381.0 29 405.7 Total Defense (yds/g) 6 275.1 8 284.5 Scoring Offense (pts/g) 34 30.2 10 36.6 Scoring Defense (pts/g) 24 19.1 8 13.4 Rushing Offense (yds/g) 64 145.8 2 280.9 Rushing Defense (yds/g) 3 89.6 15 111.6 Passing Offense (yds/g) 35 235.2 100 124.7 Passing Defense (yds/g) 16 185.5 20 172.9 Turnover Margin 92 -0.7 3 1.6 Punt Returns (yds/ret) 53 9.1 21 11.9 Kickoff Returns (yds/ret) 7 24.6 72 19.8 Net Punting (yds/punt) 22 37.7 28 37.3 ============================== Hypothetical Game ============================== (If the teams played an exactly average game) BYU AFA --- --- Score 22 28 Total Offense (yds) 333 340 Rushing Offense (yds) 129 185 Passing Offense (yds) 204 155 Turnovers 2 1 GO COUGS! ==================================================================== Copyright 1998, BYU Insider *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from byuinsider-text, go to http://www.BYUInsider.com or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ==================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: BYU Insider Subject: [Insider] Pro Watch (12/7/98) Date: 07 Dec 1998 09:05:39 -0700 BYU Insider Pro Watch 12/7/98 ---- NFL ---- Steve Young, SF 49ers 19-31, 213 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT 6 Rushes 29 yds W: SF 31, Carolina 28 OT Travis Hall, Atlanta 4 TKL, 1 AST, 5 COMB W: Atlanta 28, Indianapolis 21 Spencer Reid, Panthers 0 TKL, 0 AST, 0 COMB L: Carolina 28, SF 31 OT Itula Mili, Seattle 0 rec., 0 yds L: Seattle 31, NY Jets 32 Kurt Gouveia, San Diego 2 TKL, 0 AST, 2 COMB L: SD 20, Washington 24 Tim McTyer, Philadelphia 5 TKL, 2 AST, 7 COMB W: Philadelphia 17, STL 14 Lee Johnson, Cincinnatti 7 Punts 322 yds 46 yds avg. "The Cougar Classic turns 25 this weekend when BYU welcomes Cal State Northridge, Louisiana Tech and Southern Utah to the Marriott Center. Semifinals are set for Friday with the winners and losers meeting Saturday. Game times are 5:30 and 7:30 both nights. The Cougars are seeking their 16th championship in the four-team tournament that has been played annually since 1975, but has roots dating back to 1971. And though the tourney has lacked national prominence over the years, it has produced plenty of memories. "Louisiana Tech (4-1) at BYU (2-5), 7:30 p.m.: Karl Malone's alma mater is coming off its first loss of the season — an 86-60 loss to Southwest Missouri State. Senior guard Lonnie Cooper is a sharpshooter. He's averaging 17.8 points while shooting 50.9 percent from the field, 56.7 from three-point range and 94.7 from the free throw line. Injury riddled BYU, meanwhile, enters the game after dropping roads contests at Oregon and Washington State. Freshman sensation Mark Bigelow netted a career-high 33 points in the 70-69 setback in Pullman Tuesday. At 2-5, BYU coach Steve Cleveland said he's dedicated to remaining positive and moving forward while evaluating each game. The Cougars defeated the Bulldogs 74-64 in the 1995 Cougar Classic finals." ======================================== Jepsen will start tonight The Provo Daily Herald (12/11/98) http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/F3FEA9B0D5C2631B872566D700272E82?OpenDocument "You might be surprised that center Bret Jepsen will start tonight when BYU plays Louisiana Tech in the Cougar Classic. Jepsen sure is. After missing four games because of a severe concussion suffered at the elbow of Arizona's Eugene Edgerson, Jepsen returned for a light practice Wednesday and joined a full workout on Thursday. The 6-foot-11 center expected to come off the bench tonight, especially after noticing how much 10 days of inactivity has affected his conditioning." ======================================== Cougs Take Aim At Pacific in NCAA Volleyball The Salt Lake Tribune (12/11/98) http://www.sltrib.com/12111998/sports/66544.htm "It's beginning to look a lot like last year, and that's the last thing the BYU Cougars want. They're thinking Final Four. Having advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA women's volleyball tournament for the second straight season, the seventh-ranked Cougars take on Pacific today at Rec Hall -- home of Penn State University. The match begins at 3 p.m. MST and will be broadcast in Utah on radio station KOVO AM-960. Should the Cougars win, they will meet the winner of tonight's match between No. 2 Penn State and No. 21 Louisville." ======================================== Huge Effort by Bigelow, Cougs Not Enough as WSU Extends Streak The Salt Lake Tribune (12/8/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12091998/sports/66123.htm "A promising start gave way to the same old ending for the road-challenged BYU Cougars Tuesday night. Overcoming a heroic 33-point performance by BYU freshman Mark Bigelow, Washington State held off the Cougars for a 70-69 victory at Beasley Coliseum. Shorthanded because of injuries and coming off a horrendous 93-62 loss at Oregon on Saturday, the Cougars regrouped and turned in what was easily their best road performance of the season -- only to fall short at the end." ======================================== Return to Glory The Salt Lake Tribune (12/8/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12081998/sports/sports.htm "The night before his first game as the starting quarterback at BYU, all those years ago, Robbie Bosco felt sick. He was scared. Beyond scared. He was freaked out. His central-nervous system seized up. His confidence collapsed. All of his preliminary preparation and posturing suddenly came under the full assault of what he now calls ``the monster.'' "After BYU lost to Air Force in the WAC Championship game Saturday, when Feterik once again was the target of fans' criticisms, Bosco nodded and shrugged, comprehending better than anyone the good and the bad that comes with winning and losing as BYU's trigger man. " ======================================== Freshman Bigelow Has Been Big Surprise for Cougars The Salt Lake Tribune (12/8/98) http://www.sltrib.com/12081998/sports/65881.htm "Mark Bigelow is a bit surprised to be the BYU Cougars' leading scorer and second-leading rebounder six games into his freshman season -- but only to the extent that he never asked for the job. In terms of his talent and ability to actually pull it off, the Cougars' 6-foot-6 guard could not be less taken aback. Despite his callow youth, Bigelow is close to unflappable. He has rarely met a shot he hasn't liked, and generally goes about his business like he has been playing two or three years instead of the measly month he actually has been on the floor. "Bigelow still looks and acts his age at times -- Cleveland actually yelled at him for passing up shots in last Saturday's loss at Oregon. But whether popping off a screen or finishing on the break, Bigelow looks like he belongs out there. " ======================================== Tulane Hires Georgia Assistant Scelfo The Salt Lake Tribune (12/8/98) http://www.sltrib.com/12081998/sports/65826.htm "Tulane on Monday hired as its new coach a man who has had precisely nothing to do with the 10th-ranked Green Wave's 11-0 record. Chris Scelfo -- the assistant head coach at Georgia who was viewed as the third choice for the job only a few days ago -- was hired to replace Tommy Bowden, who last week quit to take the head coaching job at Clemson. Scelfo beat out perceived front-runner Rich Rodriguez, the TU offensive coordinator, in part because Scelfo is a Louisiana native who promised not to use the Green Wave as a stepping stone to a better job the way Bowden did." ==================================================================== Copyright 1998, BYU Insider *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from byuinsider-text, go to http://www.BYUInsider.com or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ==================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: BYU Insider Subject: [Insider] Pro Watch (12/14/98) Date: 14 Dec 1998 09:21:27 -0700 BYU Insider Pro Watch (12/14/98) ---- NFL ---- Steve Young, SF 49ers Plays Monday night Travis Hall, Atlanta 1 TKL, 1 AST, 2 COMB, 1 PD W: Atlanta 27, NO 17 Spencer Reid, Panthers 1 AST - special teams L: Carolina 25, Washington 28 Itula Mili, Seattle DNP - Injured (knee) W: Seattle 38, SD 17 Kurt Gouveia, San Diego 0 TKL, 0 AST, 0 COMB L: SD 17, Seattle 38 Tim McTyer, Philadelphia 0 TKL, 1 AST, 1 COMB L: Philadelphia 17, Arizona 20 Lee Johnson, Cincinnatti Released - see below Chad Lewis, St. Louis DNP - Not active : Recently signed Defensive Key: TKL/TK=Tackle AST/AS=Assist COMB=Combined IN=Interception PD=Pass Defense FF=Forced Fumble FR=Fumble Recovery BL=Block ---- NEWS ---- Bengals cut ex-BYU star after criticism The Provo Daily Herald http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/EC29D5983D8FBA94872566D400272E03?OpenDocument "The Cincinnati Bengals released 14-year veteran punter Lee Johnson today, a day after he suggested the front office needs to change. General manager Mike Brown told reporters the move had nothing to do with Johnson's comments following a 33-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Johnson figured there was no other reason for the team to get rid of him. "I'm sure I was released because of what I said," said Johnson, called out of a meeting this morning and told of the move. "I meant what I said, but I didn't think it was that incredible." "During the loss Sunday, about two dozen banners decked Cinergy Field calling for Brown to step down as general manager. After the game, Johnson said he wouldn't have bought a ticket if he were a fan. "No, no way," Johnson said. "You're saying (losing) is OK. I guess if you've got nothing else to do. Bengals owner Mike Brown said he still plans to pursue the proposed $20,588 fine of Johnson. "A fine is a disciplinary measure," said Richard Berthelsen, the general counsel for the union. "You discipline someone to try and make sure they're a better employee in the future. How can you do that if you've fired them?" "The Bengals cut Johnson, a 14-year veteran, on Monday and then said he would be fined one week's pay - $20,588 - for conduct detrimental to the team. Johnson was released a day after he criticized the front office and said changes must be made if the Bengals are to become a winning team." ========================== Jim McMahon inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame http://ESPN.SportsZone.com/ncf/news/1998/981208/00983130.html "McMahon threw for 9,536 yards and 84 touchdowns for the Cougars. The quarterback who earned the nickname "Punky QB" for his brash behavior in the NFL led the Chicago Bears to victory in the 1986 Super Bowl. "I love the game, I'm glad I stuck with football," said McMahon, who came to BYU with the intention of playing baseball. "It's brought me everything that I have great in my life. "Drew Miller's days as a BYU quarterback appear to be numbered — as in 16 and counting. The sophomore backup, who threatened to leave the program earlier this season over a lack of playing time, will explore his options for a transfer after the Cougars face Tulane in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31. BYU coaches have given athletic director Rondo Fehlberg a list of schools expected to request permission to speak with Miller about transferring. "Though Fehlberg declined to say which schools Miller planned to visit or seek opportunities with, broadcast reports list Eastern Washington, Montana, California, Clemson, Duke and Texas A&M as possibilities. Should Miller transfer to one of the Division I-AA schools (EWU or Montana), he'll be able to play next season. Cooper played in three games and scored 39 points on the week, shot 12-of-20 from the floor, 6-of-9 from three-point range and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. It ended its first year well under Cleveland, and it played Arizona tight before falling 78-74 in overtime on Nov. 28. But there are many more corners to turn for Cleveland and his staff to resuscitate the Cougars. BYU has a staircase of baby steps to take before it can play with anyone in the country. One day after backup quarterback Drew Miller announced plans to transfer after the season, BYU on Wednesday suspended sophomore running back Ronney Jenkins and sophomore cornerback Heshimu Robertson for the Liberty Bowl on New Year's Eve -- and maybe longer. ``We will sorely miss them,'' said Coach LaVell Edwards. "Citing confidentiality, the school did not disclose what transgressions led to the punishment, but both involved allegations of sexual impropriety. Both players remain under investigation by the BYU Honor Code office, which has the ability to punish students who violate the LDS Church-owned school's rules prohibiting alcohol, drugs and premarital sex, among other things. KSL Radio reported Wednesday that the university already has decided to suspend Robertson until at least next fall, but Jenkins said he does not know what fate awaits him." ====================================== Players sift through fallout The Provo Daily Herald http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/8F6E06F3F1B1195F872566DE0026D809?OpenDocument "Heshimu Robertson is humbled and disappointed, but looks forward to playing football at BYU again. Ronney Jenkins, however, is confused and uncertain about his future. The two Cougar football stars appeared to be headed in different directions on campus Thursday as they finished up final examinations. "Jenkins and Robertson were suspended from BYU's football team earlier this week and will not be playing against Tulane in the Liberty Bowl, Dec. 31. "I don't know what I'll do in the future," Jenkins said. "I do know I won't play in the bowl game. Beyond that, I can't say." Jenkins is the No. 6 rusher in BYU school history after playing just two seasons. Robertson, a junior college transfer, was a starting cornerback on a BYU defense which ranked No. 5 nationally in yards allowed per game. Both were accused of having violated the school's Honor Code, and are still in a review process." ====================================== Dabney to be back for BYU ESPN SportsZone http://espn.sportszone.com/ncf/news/1998/981217/00999575.html "Jaron Dabney, the 1997 Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year who left Brigham Young after being ruled academically ineligible for the current season, will return to the school next year. "BYU is where I started, and it's where I'll finish," Dabney told the Deseret News. "My dad always told me to finish what I start." "Dabney is a multiple-threat player who could play as a tailback, wide receiver or kick returner for the Cougars. As a freshman, he averaged 14 yards every time he touched the ball at those three positions. But a shoplifting conviction shortly after the 1997 season resulted in a brief suspension for the Sealy, Texas, native. Academic problems then forced him to leave BYU and enroll at Blinn Junior College near his home. "Dabney said he was recruited by other schools during his year away from BYU, including national powers Texas A&M, Texas, Tennessee and Syracuse. "There was doubt (about returning to BYU) at first, and I thought maybe BYU isn't the place for me," Dabney said. "But I feel like God sent me to BYU for a reason." ====================================== BYU stars Tait, Morris have choices to make concerning NFL draft The Deseret News http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30002058,00.html? "BYU stars John Tait and Rob Morris have monumental decisions to make in the next few weeks. Namely, whether or not to skip their senior seasons and jump to the National Football League. It's not as though the pair of juniors don't have enough on their minds already. They are trying to focus on their Dec. 31 Liberty Bowl opponent, Tulane, an undefeated, top ten team. They're also dealing with the devastating bowl suspensions of two fellow starters, Ronney Jenkins and Heshi Robertson. "Yet when it comes to questions about the future, Tait and Morris admit they don't know what's going to happen. They are also aware that Jan. 8 is the final day underclassmen can declare their NFL draft intentions." ==================================================================== Copyright 1998, BYU Insider *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from byuinsider-text, go to http://www.BYUInsider.com or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ==================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: BYU Insider Subject: [Insider] BB Post-game : Cal 71, BYU 70 Date: 19 Dec 1998 23:37:41 -0700 BYU Insider BB Post-game : Cal 71, BYU 70 ========= Box Score ========= 1st Half 2nd Half Final Score -------- -------- ----------- BYU 35 35 70 Cal 28 43 71 ========== Game Recap ========== http://espn.sportszone.com/ncb/1999/981219/recap/cahbaw.html "Geno Carlisle scored 27 points as California survived dreadful first-half shooting and edged past Brigham Young 71-70 Saturday night. Cal (6-1) of the PAC-10 shot just 27 percent in the first half and trailed BYU (4-6) of the Western Athletic Conference 35-28 at the half. "BYU led 60-59 after Michael Vranes hit 1-of-2 free throws with 4:07 remaining. Cal pulled ahead 63-60 when Lampley hit back-to-back baskets over the next 30 seconds. "BYU closed within one point, 69-68, with 16.1 seconds left on Mark Bigelow's two free throws. But Cal got a pair of free throws from Carlisle after he was fouled on the inbound play. Those points made Bret Jepsen's tip-in at the buzzer moot. "Bigelow led BYU with 22 points. Jepsen had 13 and Vranes had 11. Both teams were without players. Wesley's personal training sessions with BYU's most intense assistant basketball coach were planned before Tuesday night's aggravating 82-75 loss at UC-Irvine. The loss, viewed as unforgivable by head coach Steve Cleveland, Schroyer and the rest of the staff, could make life harder on Wesley, who is scheduled to run and lift weights for a couple of hours today, Saturday and Monday so he can catch up on conditioning and timing he lost while sitting out the fall semester. "The rest of the team is on vacation. "I'm in trouble," said Wesley before the team headed home Wednesday, when he had his first Schroyer-led aerobics class." =============================== Bad weather halts BYU Football's Trip to Memphis The Provo Daily Herald (12/24/98) http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/A8EA452BC75E8109872566E40026D7FD?OpenDocument "The first leg of BYU's Liberty Bowl trip ended almost before it started. The Cougars were supposed to fly to Memphis on Wednesday, but Mother Nature wouldn't cooperate. An ice storm closed the Memphis airport, preventing BYU's two charter aircraft from leaving Salt Lake City. The plan called for the Cougs to spend Wednesday night in Memphis and go through two practice sessions there today. The revised schedule calls for the charters to head for Tennessee today, weather permitting." =============================== Suspended Robertson Plans to Be Back The Salt Lake Tribune (12/23/98) http://www.sltrib.com/12231998/sports/69324.htm "Heshimu Robertson will miss the Liberty Bowl, but not much else. The BYU Cougars' sophomore cornerback already banned from playing in the 40th annual game on New Year's Eve has been suspended by the university for the spring semester and summer term for violating its Honor Code, meaning he cannot participate in spring drills. He will be allowed to return to school next fall in time for the football season, the school said, if he completes certain confidential criteria for reinstatement. Robertson has said he plans to be back." =============================== Cougars Touched by a Freshman The Salt Lake Tribune (12/22/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12221998/sports/sports.htm "There are those who have no problem dumping great expectations on Mark Bigelow, a scraggy 18-year-old freshman seemingly too frail to lift a burden as unwieldy and cumbrous, a load so thoroughly plugged, as BYU basketball. But dumping they are, even hauling out the mother of all Cougar-hoop superlatives, calling him the next Danny Ainge. "Here's the surprising thing -- the people who know Bigelow best are the ones steam-shoveling most freely, wittingly or otherwise. ``He's got a chance to be one of the best players ever here,'' says Coach Steve Cleveland." =============================== Young thinks he'll play Sunday despite knee ligament damage The Deseret News (12/22/98) http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30002727,00.html? "Steve Young doesn't think his sore left knee will keep him from playing on Sunday, and that's welcome news to the San Francisco 49ers. "He feels pretty darn good right now. He feels like he'll be able to play," coach Steve Mariucci said after an MRI on Monday showed Young stretched his medial collateral ligament. "He's had this knee before, and he limped for a day and then he was back at it. Hopefully, it's like that again." "Young was listed as probable for Sunday's regular season closer against the St. Louis Rams, but Mariucci said a final determination on the quarterback's status would be made after seeing how well he holds up in practice this week." Why? "Because of the typically rotten winter weather in Utah -- and the lack of an indoor practice facility to shield the Cougars from it. Neither disadvantage, it seems, is going to disappear overnight. While Athletic Director Rondo Fehlberg long ago made construction of an indoor facility a top priority, he said there is no significant progress to report, since the athletic department remains in a ``quiet period'' of attempting to raise money for the project and ``refining conceptual plans to get more of a feel for what it's going to cost.'' "Fehlberg said he has no particular timetable for the project. But given its current stage of development, the building -- expected to be built over part of the parking lot and athletic fields of the Smith Fieldhouse -- probably cannot be completed before 2000. That means at least one more season in which the Cougars must prepare for their bowl game by leaving friends and families behind -- or bringing them along -- in the thick of the holiday season." ====================================== BYU's worried about the King The Deseret News (12/28/98) http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30003588,00.html? "Don't misunderstand Rob Morris. He has plenty of respect for Elvis Presley. The BYU linebacker toured Graceland Sunday night and was impressed with the late entertainer's guitar collection. His focus, however, is on a different King as the Cougars prepare for Thursday's Liberty Bowl game with Tulane. "If Elvis could've thrown a football even half as good as Shaun King does, he'd have made twice as much money," said Morris. King, who set a new NCAA Division I pass efficiency record with a 183.3 rating this season, has an arm that makes Morris nervous. "And he isn't the only one. "Shaun King is everything that's been said of him," said BYU coach LaVell Edwards. "He's tough to defend, especially if you give him time." King is a two-dimensional threat. He's the first player in college's football top division ever to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 500 yards in an 11-game season. In leading the undefeated Green Wave, King completed 223 of 328 passes for 3,232 yards and 36 touchdowns. He added 532 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing." ====================================== It looks like December just isn't BYU's month The Deseret News (12/28/98) http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30003589,00.html? "The BYU football team arrived in Memphis, Tenn., late last week to begin preparations for the Liberty Bowl, and by a pure fluke nothing went wrong and they arrived safely. On the second try. "The first time they attempted to go to Memphis they drove from Provo to Salt Lake City but never got off the ground, sort of like their offense these days. All in the same day, their airplane needed a replacement part and the Memphis airport was closed because of an ice storm. The Cougars are having one of those months. . ." ====================================== BYU Prepares for the Same Old Tulane The Salt Lake Tribune (12/27/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12271998/sports/70210.htm "Since accepting an invitation to play BYU in the 40th annual Liberty Bowl on New Year's Eve, the undefeated Tulane Green Wave have lost their head coach, hired a new one, estranged some players with the decision and suffered local criticism for choosing the brother of the booster club president instead of the popular offensive coordinator. So what does that mean to the Cougars? Nothing, they figure." ====================================== Y.'s Downturn in Hoop Fortunes Has Taken Big Toll in Attendance The Salt Lake Tribune (12/26/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12261998/sports/69967.htm "It used to be as simple as throwing a light switch, or plastering ``Game Tonight'' on a marquee. If the BYU Cougars were playing basketball in the Marriott Center, chances are 18,000 people would show up. Never mind the opponent. Never mind the weather. Never mind if the game was on television. ``I remember when we'd get 15,000 for the Varsity Preview,'' says BYU Ticket Manager David Miles, referring to the Cougars' annual meet-the-team night. Those days are long gone. When BYU returns to action against Utah State on Jan. 2, the Marriott Center crowd probably will number around 10,000 -- if the Cougars are lucky. BYU's largest crowd of the season was the 13,846 for Arizona on Nov. 28. Gatherings of 6,000 to 7,000 have become common. In a building that lists an official capacity of 22,700, that tends to look like family and a few close friends. And the Cougars have noticed." ====================================== BYU Expels Jenkins After Second Honor Code Violation ESPN SportsZone (12/25/98) http://espn.go.com/ncf/news/1998/981225/01011457.html See Also: http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12251998/sports/69670.htm "A second violation of Brigham Young University's Honor Code has led to the expulsion of sophomore running back Ronney Jenkins -- the Cougars' leading rusher this season. Jenkins allegedly committed a sexual transgression of the code, which includes prohibitions on premarital sex and the use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs. Jenkins was suspended for the 1997 season for the same reason. "Jenkins ran for 1,307 yards and 13 touchdowns this season -- second best in BYU history -- and needed only 930 yards in the next two seasons to surpass Jamal Willis' school record of 2,970." ====================================== Feterick ready to follow tradition of BYU's pass-happy QBs ESPN SportsZone (12/25/98) http://espn.go.com/ncf/bowls/news/1998/981227/01013722.html "Kevin Feterick wants to use the Liberty Bowl for his personal coming out as Brigham Young's latest pass-happy quarterback. Some might say that mission already is accomplished. The junior quarterback played so well in leading the Cougars to a seven-game winning streak this season that his competition, sophomore Drew Miller, plans to transfer after Thursday's game with No. 10 Tulane (11-0). That isn't enough for Feterick, a player who wants to live up to a BYU tradition that includes Jim McMahon, Steve Young and Ty Detmer. "Next year is my year," said Feterick." ====================================== Wave hangs with 'King' but is focusing on goals The New Orleans Times-Picayune (12/27/98) http://www.nola.com/tulane/bowlweek/122798a.html "Tulane quarterback Shaun King had only been in Memphis a few hours Saturday when he said he heard the clich for what seemed like the 100th time: The King is in Memphis. He'll even be at Graceland tonight. But King and his teammates said they're here for more than just to visit Elvis Presley's home and play tourists. "It's great to be here," said King, who, with his teammates and Tulane's opponent, BYU, will be the guests of honor at a party at Graceland tonight. "But our ultimate mission is to be undefeated." ====================================== Air Force bombs Washington in Oahu Bowl ESPN SportsZone (12/25/98) http://espn.go.com/ncf/1998/981225/recap/aabwwb.html "Air Force had something to prove to the Bowl Championship Series committee, and it proved it in a big way. Snubbed in the national championship selection process despite an 11-1 record, the No. 16 Falcons placed an exclamation point on their season by taking it out on Washington 45-25 in the Oahu Bowl on Christmas Day. Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry wants the BCS folks to know the Falcons are a Top 10 team." ====================================== No. 5 Cougars Fulfilled Most Expectations The Salt Lake Tribune (12/25/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12251998/sports/69676.htm "Elaine Michaelis will never complain about it. It's not her style. Still, the BYU women's volleyball coach acknowledges pondering a lot of ``what-ifs'' since the Cougars were eliminated by Penn State in the NCAA regionals. Sent to State College, Pa., for the second straight year by the NCAA Tournament committee, the Cougars fell in three straight games to the Nittany Lions -- who advanced to the Final Four and lost to Long Beach State in the national championship match. "Simply, Michaelis and the Cougars thought they were Final Four material. And a trip to Madison, Wis., might have been more feasible had the Cougars stayed home for the regionals -- or at least not had to travel 2,000 miles to play the second-seeded team in the tournament." ==================================================================== Copyright 1998, BYU Insider *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from byuinsider-text, go to http://www.BYUInsider.com or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ==================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: BYU Insider Subject: [Insider] Win Lavell Edwards' Book! Billick will interview with the expansion Cleveland Browns this week, his first official chance to take over his own team after six seasons as the Minnesota Vikings' offensive coordinator. His resume includes this season's NFL-record 556 points and a team-record 6,264 yards. The Vikings have recorded the top three yardage totals in their history under Billick, and five of the top 10. The bowl originated in Philadelphia before moving to Memphis in 1965. Tulane has had a banner campaign under second year coach Tommy Bowden, going 11-0 through the regular season for the first time since 1931, a season in which they went on to lose to USC in the Rose Bowl. It was also the first conference championship they've won since an SEC title in 1949. The Green Wave has done an about-face under the direction of Coach Bowden, as it had won only five games in the three seasons prior to his arrival. However, a couple of weeks ago, he moved on to take the top spot at Clemson, and Georgia assistant head coach Chris Scelfo has been brought to fill the vacancy. This is Tulane's third trip to the Liberty Bowl, beating Colorado in 1970, and losing to Penn State in 1979. The Cougars have similarly had a good year that has been shaken up by upheavals over the past few weeks. After being named the WAC Mountain Division champs, the Cougars lost a big part of their game. Star running back Ronney Jenkins has been expelled from school following an honor code violation, and will not be allowed to re-enroll in the future. Starting cornerback Heshi Robertson was also suspended for the Liberty Bowl, but will return to school and play his junior season next fall. His absence in this game could be huge as the Cougar defense matches up against the #2 scoring offense in the country. BYU had their seven game winning streak snapped by Air Force in their final official WAC game on December 5. Now they seek redemption against 10th ranked and undefeated Tulane. If trends mean anything, the Cougs could be in for a good day, since they have won their last two bowl games in even years ('96 vs. Kansas State, '94 vs. Oklahoma State). However, the Cougs are 0-3 in bowl games east of the Mississippi, and are looking to buck that trend. The Y led the WAC in passing offense this season, with Kevin Feterik throwing for 2460 yards, 15 TDs and only 5 INTs. The passing game has made steady improvement as a young receiving corps learned and gained experience throughout the season. The Cougar defense has been rock solid through the season, finishing with a #5 national ranking for rushing defense as well as total defense, surrendering only 274 yards per game. The Cougars have held their opponents under 400 yards of total offense in each of their 13 games this season, and have suffocated rushing games all season long. However, pass defense will be the key to victory in this game. The Y's defense will focus on putting pressure on QB Shaun King and on slowing down the dynamic duo of P.J. Franklin and JaJuan Dawson, who will be the most talented receiving tandem that the Cougar defense has faced this season. At least one of the two has notched a 100 yard game nine times this year. Already thin when it comes to depth in the defensive backfield, the Cougars will rely heavily on Rob Warcup to step up and fill Heshi's shoes. Tulane enters this game as one of two undefeated teams in the nation, and shares the nation's longest winning streak (12 games) with the other unbeaten team, Tennessee. The Green Wave's success can be largely credited to quarterback Shaun King, who has earned a prominent place in the NCAA record books. His 183.3 pass efficiency rating this season eclipsed the previous record of 178.4, set by Florida's Danny Wuerffel in 1995. King became the first player in NCAA history to pass for 3000 yards and rush for 500 in an 11 game season (New Mexico's Stoney Case did it in 12 games in 1994), and became only the fourth player to pass for 300 yards and rush for 100 in a single game. Adding to his heroics is the fact that he has played with a broken (non-throwing) left wrist since September 26th. The Green Wave offense has run like a well-oiled machine throughout the year, especially over the second half of the season. Tulane has racked up at least 40 points in 8 of their 11 games, including the final 6 of the regular season. Moreover, they have played 19 consecutive quarters without a turnover, and rank 5th nationally in that category with a +15 margin. Tulane, Kansas State, UCLA, and Ohio State were the only four schools in the nation to chalk up 3000 yards passing and 2000 yards rushing this season. Tulane's defense has played impressively as well, and averages 7 tackles for a loss per game. After leading the nation with 26 interceptions in 1997, the Wave grabbed 14 this year. They also feature a solid kicking game in Brad Palazzo, who holds the Tulane record for field goals made (48) and field goal percentage (.727). He has connected on all 68 of his PATs this season, and is trying to add to his school record of 88 straight. With the statistics that Tulane has put up, one might question why they weren't invited to a BCS bowl. The major reason is that the strength of their schedule makes it easy to second guess their ability. 1998 was the first season that Tulane hasn't played a team from the SEC since it was formed in 1933. ============================== Implications ============================== BYU has an excellent opportunity to knock off a top ten team and get a jump start on next year's rankings. The fact that Tulane is undefeated draws a lot of attention to this game, and if the Cougars can capitalize with a win, it will be very good exposure. Tulane can cap off a historic year by finishing undefeated, and would end up with the highest ranking in school history. Also, a win, coupled with a Florida State victory over Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl, would leave them as the lone undefeated team in the nation, and would destroy any credibility that the BCS claims to have. Tulane may be the least respected 11-0, #10 team to have come along in a long while, and a victory over nationally respected BYU would give credence to their claim of being a top ten caliber team. ============================== Players to Watch ============================== BYU #2, Jason Walker (SS) -- He's gathered in six interceptions in this, his senior year, to rank 12th in the NCAA. #3, Brian Gray (CB) -- His play, along with that of the other DBs, will determine if Tulane's passing juggernaut can be slowed down. #7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- His pass efficiency of 140.21 was tops in the WAC, and has consistently climbed throughout the season. #20, Junior Mahe (RB) -- This true freshman steps in for Ronney Jenkins to make his first career start. His quickness makes him hard to tackle and fun to watch. #44, Rob Morris (LB) -- Will this be the last game in a Cougar uniform for "Superfreak?" He'll decide in the next week or so if he'll go on to the NFL or come back for his senior season. Meanwhile, watch for him to have a big game as he keys in on Shaun King. Tulane #10, Shaun King (QB) -- He truly has been the king this year, posting gaudy numbers with 3232 yards passing for 36 TDs and only 6 INTs, as well as rushing for 532 yards and 10 TDs. He has passed for 300+ yards in 6 of 11 games this season, including 5 of his last 6. #6, Michael Jordan (CB) -- No, not THAT Michael Jordan. This one made first team all-CUSA for his solid play throughout the year. #8, P.J. Franklin (WR) -- He's ranked ninth in the NCAA for receiving yards per game with 106.7. #23, Toney Converse (RB) -- This sophomore tied a school record by scoring five touchdowns against Louisiana Tech, and averaged 129 yards per game over the final four games of the season. #30, Jerry Phillips (LB) -- Known as "Fish," he led the Green Wave's defense with 104 tackles on the season, including an amazing 22 versus Army. ============================== Records to Watch ============================== BYU holds the current NCAA record of 299 consecutive games without being shut out. ============================== Comparison Statistics ============================== Team Statistics BYU Tulane Category Rank Stat Rank Stat ------------------------ ---- ------ ---- ------ Total Offense (yds/g) 44 381.7 4 507.1 Total Defense (yds/g) 5 273.9 96 430.3 Scoring Offense (pts/g) 37 28.8 2 45.4 Scoring Defense (pts/g) 25 19.2 48 24.4 Rushing Offense (yds/g) 65 144.8 23 202.4 Rushing Defense (yds/g) 5 91.2 75 170.0 Passing Offense (yds/g) 34 236.9 13 304.7 Passing Defense (yds/g) 21 215.1 77 260.3 Turnover Margin 90 -0.6 5 1.4 Punt Returns (yds/ret) 53 9.1 70 8.0 Kickoff Returns (yds/ret) 6 24.3 83 19.1 Net Punting (yds/punt) 23 37.4 63 35.5 Individual Statistics - Players in the Top 40 Nationally Team Player Category Rank Statistic ------ -------------- --------------- ----- ------------ BYU Jason Walker Interceptions 12 0.5 int/game Mike Rigell Kickoff Returns 11 26.8 yds/ret Kevin Feterik Pass Efficiency 27 140.2 rating Owen Pochman Field Goals 15 1.5 fg/game Owen Pochman Scoring 36 7.8 pts/game Tulane Shaun King Pass Efficiency 1 183.3 rating Shaun King Total Offense 6 342.2 yds/gm Brad Palazzo Scoring 29 8.1 pts/game P.J. The Salt Lake Tribune (12/30/98) http://www.sltrib.com/12301998/sports/70730.htm "Shaun King is no Jim McMahon. He's not Steve Young, either, or Ty Detmer. But he's close. Armed with statistics and circumstances that suggest he might be just as good as any of the BYU legends, King is the senior quarterback who will lead the undefeated and 10th-ranked Tulane Green Wave into the 40th annual Liberty Bowl against the Cougars on Thursday (11:30 a.m. MST). He is also the guy who -- for once -- is stealing attention from the school that bills itself as Quarterback U." ================================= Mahe takes promotion in stride The Deseret News (12/30/98) http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30003723,00.html? "In the next day or so, BYU freshman Junior Mahe plans to telephone Ronney Jenkins. His mentor, who led the Western Athletic Conference in rushing with 1,307 yards, is back home in California after being expelled for a second and final violation of the school's honor code. The ouster greatly troubles Mahe, who becomes BYU's featured back for Thursday's Liberty Bowl game with Tulane. "There is life without Ronney, but it isn't the same life," Mahe said. "Hopefully, I can meet the expectations." The telephone call, he added, will keep a season-long ritual alive. Jenkins kept the former Brighton High star from getting nervous in games by telling jokes and reminding him not to be scared." ================================= Air raids big concern for Cougars The Deseret News (12/30/98) http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30003941,00.html? "Rob Warcup, perhaps better than anyone else, understands the challenges BYU faces in its Liberty Bowl game with Tulane. The cornerback will make his first collegiate start Thursday (ESPN, 11:30 a.m., MST) against the top pass efficiency attack in Division I football history. "It's going to take every person on the team, whenever they get a chance to play, to do their very best," said Warcup, who'll replace the suspended Heshimu Robertson at right corner." ================================= Mahe No Longer Junior Partner In Y. Backfield The Salt Lake Tribune (12/30/98) http://www.sltrib.com/12301998/sports/70711.htm "Junior Mahe has come a long way in four months. When the BYU football press guide was published in August, Mahe rated just 10 lines in the postscript section relegated to Cougar freshman bios. There was no picture. Tuesday, at the Liberty Bowl kickoff awards luncheon in an East Memphis hotel, Mahe was in true blue Cougar colors during the school's five-minute highlight film. The rookie from Brighton High School was described as ``sparking the BYU running game'' or some such drum-beating lingo. "It has been a monumental chore for the school's publicity staff to purge 1,300-yard rusher Ronney Jenkins from the rolls, as evidenced by his appearance on the front cover of the bowl press guide. But a far more daunting task has been for the BYU coaching staff to revamp the game plan for the Tulane game, employing Mahe in place of Jenkins, who was booted from school for violating the BYU honor code." ================================= LaVell Keeps Cougars on Course Through Adversity The Salt Lake Tribune (12/29/98) http://www.sltrib.com/1998/dec/12291998/sports/70532.htm "It certainly seemed like the sky was falling on BYU's football program when Ronney Jenkins and Heshimu Robertson were suspended for the Liberty Bowl a couple of weeks ago, and when Jenkins was kicked out of school for good last week. Radio shows' lines lighted up, computer chat boards played host to fevered debates, and even a few Cougar players suggested the school's strict Honor Code could use some adjustment to help keep their teammates in school. If history is a guide, however, Jenkins won't long be missed. "'You can't worry about it; you just have to move on,' said Edwards. 'Once the decision is made, it's like an injury; there's nothing you can do about it. Whoever said it, 'You just close ranks and keep marching.' That's really all you can do about it.'" ================================= Game faces turn sour at luncheon The Provo Daily Herald http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/AllByDate/D355974E0E8ACF85872566EA0026D613?OpenDocument "You'd hope they aren't bad omens of what's to come. But when BYU and Tulane met in the grand ballroom of the Adam Marks Hotel Tuesday for a huge luncheon, the Cougars had a bad hair day. First, a football with "BYU" written on it and sitting on the elevated head table, wouldn't hold air. "Second, Tulane's players and coaches arrived decked out in dress shirts, ties and jackets. The Cougars came in sweatsuits and T-shirts, right from practice. Third, BYU star Rob Morris was holding teammate Andrew Nash's daughter Tiffany when the baby threw up all down his chest and pants, forcing the junior linebacker to make a quick exit and change before returning to the festivities." ================================= Feterik on ESPN's Live Chat http://espn.go.com/interact/chat/feterik981229.html Some quotes: "Question: Being a part of the "quarterback factory," did the quarterback controversy this year cause you any distraction and if so, how do you deal with it? Kevin Feterik: It was a distraction because I knew I could play better and the team could play better. I watched a lot of film to see how I could get back to playing the way I did in the past when I was having a lot of success." "Question: Are you thinking about playing in the NFL after college? Kevin Feterik: I would love to. That is a goal of mine and I would love to get a shot at it and get a taste of the NFL. I have been playing sports all my life and I would like to continue playing as long as I can. " "Question: How hard was it to live up to the expectations of being a QB at BYU? Kevin Feterik: It is pretty hard. But you have just strive to leave your own mark. The bar is set pretty high here with all those incredible passing records, but I just want to do my best and hopefully I will be remembered as one of the great ones that has come out of BYU." "Question: I was wondering about the quarterback situation now at BYU. Do you think you and Miller will be back next season, or will Miller transfer? Kevin Feterik: Drew Miller told me that he will be transferring to Montana next season." ==================================================================== Copyright 1998, BYU Insider *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from byuinsider-text, go to http://www.BYUInsider.com or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ====================================================================
