It is a good smooth water trip. There is one short portage around a rip rock diversion dam. Be aware of it! I wouldn't want to go over that thing. If I remember right, I got most of the info for this trip from searching google, etc... I have a great book, Western Whitewater, but it only included the upper Yellowstone. This book gives flow rates, etc...all kinds of good info, if you are ever considering another western trip. Back to the lower Yellowstone... We put in at the town of Glendive. It was about 125 miles to the confluence of the Missouri River and Ft Union, this is were we pulled out. They let us keep our shuttle vehicles at the Ft. , for safe keeping. We did the trip in 5 days, but then we're Mtn Men . We had several kids with us, including my 15 year old son. We saw some rain, a major sand storm and were very close to a tornado... it was a great trip! The water is muddy, bring canvas buckets, water pumps and extra filters. Let the water stand in a bucket overnight, then pump water in the morning. The water is clearer in the middle of the river, so if you have to pump now, do it out in the river rather than along the bank. I think you can get water at the diversion dam, if I remember right. Otherwise, there isn't much out there... which is one reason it's a good trip. You mentioned the Green River. Have you done from Green River Town to the confluence of the Colorado R. ? We did that, what a great trip! class one all the way. You need to hire an outfitter to pick you up, so could be costly with a bunch of scouts. Anyway, I'll try to find my notes on that trip, and let you know anything helpful. hardtack > > our scout troop is interested in a canoe trip down the Yellowstone > river this summer. > > Where can we start and end, > what is the camping situation > Any water available along the way to drink or do we filter it > Historical sites > best month to canoe > river conditions, rocks, rapids, shallow water, lockness monsters, etc > > thank you in advance for any information or places to obtain maps > > Joe Brandl > -- - --- Randal Bublitz - --- rjbublitz@earthlink.net we have NOT inherited the Earth - ---------------------- hist_text list info: http://www.xmission.com/~drudy/mtman/maillist.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2002 22:31:01 EST From: SWcushing@aol.com Subject: Re: MtMan-List: scout canoe trip In a message dated 1/14/02 6:34:38 PM, rjbublitz@earthlink.net writes: << A bunch of us did the lower yellowstone in July '99. Falcon Press (1-800-968-3550 or www.falcon.com) has two guides to floating the Yellowstone River. They are part of a series call Montana Float Maps. One is from Gardiner to Big Timber and the other from Big Timber to Huntley. I think that these guides are exactly what you are looking for. They have access points, camp sites, river ratings, and a bunch more. The list we had at the office showed that they are $3.95 each. Unfortunately, we only had the Missouri River Series and Blackfoot River in stock. This is the first time I had used there web page and I could not find the maps on it. But we have maps in stock and they are still listed on their order form. You might give them a call. There is also a book out called "Paddling Montana" by Hank Fisher that is listed on their site. It is a good source too. Good Luck.
