From: Bill Vance Subject: "Demonizing Christians" (fwd) Date: 02 Jan 2002 14:33:56 -0800 (PST) ----------------------- begin forwarded message from Jim Zoes --------------------- According to Wash. Times columnist Greg Pierce ("Inside Politics"), the Democrats are going to try a tactic that is going to deliberately insult a large number of Americans: Christians and conservatives. They had best be careful what they ask for, they might just the firestorm they wanted. To their dismay. Anybody know where the "Windows war" is archived? Quote: Demonizing Christians Democrats, in the name of tolerance, plan to demonize conservative Christians as being like the Taliban, according to an article in Newsweek. Democrats "are planning a daring assault on the most critical turf in politics: the cultural mainstream," political correspondent Howard Fineman writes. "The theory goes like this. Our enemy in Afghanistan is religious extremism and intolerance. It's therefore more important than ever to honor the ideals of tolerance - religious, sexual, racial, reproductive - at home. The GOP is out of the mainstream, some Democrats will argue [this] year, because it's too dependent upon an intolerant 'religious right,'" Mr. Fineman said. "This is an incendiary battle plan - essentially comparing the GOP right with the Taliban - designed to draw an outraged response from the president. Then Democrats would have Bush just where they wanted him: in a firefight at home." The 'religious right' This probably won't come as a surprise to anyone, but the New York Times appears to be working off the same page as the Democratic Party. In a front-page story Thursday, the newspaper referred to Islamic radicals as "the religious right." Foreign correspondent Douglas Jehl, in an article on how the Saudi royal family has dealt with radical Islam, said: "Choosing accommodation over confrontation, the government shied away from a crackdown on militant clerics or their followers, a move that would have inflamed the religious right, the disaffected returnees from other wars [besides the one in Afghanistan] and a growing number of the unemployed." The doors of our perception are carefully and precisely regulated. Who=20 cares, right? It is an exhausting and endless task to keep explaining to people how mos= t=20 issues of conventional wisdom are scientifically implanted in the public=20 consciousness by a thousand media clips per day. In an effort to save time, I would like to provide just a little background on the handling of= =20 information in this country. Once the basic principles are illustrated about how our current system of= =20 media control arose historically, the reader might be more apt to question any given story in today's news. If everybody believes something, it's probably wrong. We call that=20 Conventional Wisdom. In America, conventional wisdom that has mass acceptance is usually=20 contrived: somebody paid for it. Examples: Pharmaceuticals restore health Vaccination brings immunity The cure for cancer is just around the corner When a child is sick, he needs immediate antibiotics When a child has a fever he needs Tylenol Hospitals are safe and clean. America has the best health care in the world. And many many more This is a list of illusions, that have cost billions and billions to=20 conjure up. Did you ever wonder why you never see the President speaking=20 publicly unless he is reading? Or why most people in this country think=20 generally the same about most of the above issues? How This Set-Up Got Started In Trust Us We're Experts, Stauber and Rampton pull together some=20 compelling data describing the science of creating public opinion in America. They trace modern public influence back to the early part of the last=20 century, highlighting the work of guys like Edward L. Bernays, the Father of Spin. From his own amazing chronicle Propaganda, we learn how E= dward L. Bernays took the ideas of his famous uncle Sigmund Freud himself, and=20 applied them to the emerging science of mass persuasion. The only difference was that instead of using these principles to uncover= =20 hidden themes in the human unconscious, the way Freudian psychology does, Bernays used these same ideas to mask agendas and to create illusi= ons that deceive and misrepresent, for marketing purposes. The Father Of Spin Bernays dominated the PR industry until the 1940s, and was a significant=20 force for another 40 years after that. (Tye) During all that time, Bernay= s=20 took on hundreds of diverse assignments to create a public perception about some idea or product. A few examples: As a neophyte with the Committee on Public Information, one of Bernays'=20 first assignments was to help sell the First World War to the American=20 public with the idea to "Make the World Safe for Democracy." (Ewen) A few years later, Bernays set up a stunt to popularize the notion of women smoking cigarettes. In organizing the 1929 Easter Parade in New Yor= k City, Bernays showed himself as a force to be reckoned with. He organized the Torches of Liberty Brigade in which suffragettes marched= =20 in the parade smoking cigarettes as a mark of women's liberation. Such=20 publicity followed from that one event that from then on women have felt=20 secure about destroying their own lungs in public, the same way that men=20 have always done. Bernays popularized the idea of bacon for breakfast. Not one to turn down a challenge, he set up the advertising format along=20 with the AMA that lasted for nearly 50 years proving that cigarettes are=20 beneficial to health. Just look at ads in issues of Life or Time from the 40s and 50s. Smoke And Mirrors Bernay's job was to reframe an issue; to create a desired image that would put a particular product or concept in a desirable light. Bernays described the public as a 'herd that needed to be led.' And this herdlike thinking makes people "susceptible to leadership." Bernays never deviated from his fundamental axiom to "control the masses=20 without their knowing it." The best PR happens with the people unaware th= at=20 they are being manipulated. Stauber describes Bernays' rationale like this: "the scientific manipulation of public opinion was necessary to overcome=20 chaos and conflict in a democratic society." Trust Us p 42 These early mass persuaders postured themselves as performing a moral=20 service for humanity in general - democracy was too good for people; they needed to be told what to think, because they were incapable of rati= onal=20 thought by themselves. Here's a paragraph from Bernays' Propaganda: "Those who manipulate the unseen mechanism of society constitute an=20 invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is=20 organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if=20 they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. In almost every act of our lives whether in the sphere of politics or=20 business in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wire= s that=20 control the public mind." Here Comes The Money Once the possibilities of applying Freudian psychology to mass media were= =20 glimpsed, Bernays soon had more corporate clients than he could handle.=20 Global corporations fell all over themselves courting the new Image Makers. There were dozens of goods and services and ideas to be sold to = a=20 susceptible public. Over the years, these players have had the money to=20 make their images happen. A few examples: Philip Morris Pfizer Union Carbide Allstate Monsanto Eli Lilly tobacco industry Ciba Geigy lead industry Coors DuPont Chlorox Shell Oil Standard Oil Procter & Gamble Boeing General Motors Dow Chemical General Mills Goodyear The Players Though world-famous within the PR industry, the companies have names we=20 don't know, and for good reason. The best PR goes unnoticed. For decades they have created the opinions that most of us were raised=20 with, on virtually any issue which has the remotest commercial value,=20 including: pharmaceutical drugs vaccines medicine as a profession alternative medicine fluoridation of city water chlorine household cleaning products tobacco dioxin global warming leaded gasoline cancer research and treatment pollution of the oceans forests and lumber images of celebrities, including damage control crisis and disaster management genetically modified foods aspartame food additives; processed foods dental amalgams Lesson #1 Bernays learned early on that the most effective way to create credibilit= y=20 for a product or an image was by "independent third-party" endorsement. For example, if General Motors were to come out and say that global warming is a hoax thought up by some liberal tree-huggers, people would s= uspect=20 GM's motives, since GM's fortune is made by selling automobiles. If however some independent research institute with a very credible=20 sounding name like the Global Climate Coalition comes out with a scientif= ic=20 report that says global warming is really a fiction, people begin to get=20 confused and to have doubts about the original issue. So that's exactly what Bernays did. With a policy inspired by genius, he=20 set up "more institutes and foundations than Rockefeller and Carnegie=20 combined." (Stauber p 45) Quietly financed by the industries whose products were being evaluated,=20 these "independent" research agencies would churn out "scientific" studies and press materials that could create any image their handlers wa= nted. Such front groups are given high-sounding names like: Temperature Research Foundation Manhattan Institute International Food Information Council Center for Produce Quality Consumer Alert Tobacco Institute Research Council The Advancement of Sound Science Coalition Cato Institute Air Hygiene Foundation American Council on Science and Health Industrial Health Federation Global Climate Coalition International Food Information Council Alliance for Better Foods Sound pretty legit don't they? Canned News Releases As Stauber explains, these organizations and hundreds of others like them= =20 are front groups whose sole mission is to advance the image of the global= =20 corporations who fund them, like those listed on page 2 above. This is accomplished in part by an endless stream of 'press releases'=20 announcing "breakthrough" research to every radio station and newspaper in the country. (Robbins) Many of these canned reports read like straight= =20 news, and indeed are purposely molded in the news format. This saves journalists the trouble of researching the subjects on their=20 own, especially on topics about which they know very little. Entire=20 sections of the release or in the case of video news releases, the whole=20 thing can be just lifted intact, with no editing, given the byline of the reporter or newspaper or TV station - and voil=E1! Instant news - cop= y and=20 paste. Written by corporate PR firms. Does this really happen? Every single day, since the 1920s when the idea of the News Release was first invented by Ivy Lee. (Stauber, p 22) Sometimes as many as half the stories appearing in an issue of the Wall S= t. Journal are based solely on such PR press releases.. (22) These types of stories are mixed right in with legitimately researched=20 stories. Unless you have done the research yourself, you won't be able to tell the difference. The Language Of Spin As 1920s spin pioneers like Ivy Lee and Edward Bernays gained more=20 experience, they began to formulate rules and guidelines for creating=20 public opinion. They learned quickly that mob psychology must focus on=20 emotion, not facts. Since the mob is incapable of rational thought,=20 motivation must be based not on logic but on presentation. Here are some of the axioms of the new science of PR: technology is a religion unto itself if people are incapable of rational thought, real democracy is dangerous important decisions should be left to experts when reframing issues, stay away from substance; create images never stat= e a clearly demonstrable lie Words are very carefully chosen for their emotio= nal impact. Here's an example. A front group called the International Food Information Council handles the public's natural aversion to genetically modified foods. Trigger words are repeated all through the text. Now in the case of GM=20 foods, the public is instinctively afraid of these experimental new=20 creations which have suddenly popped up on our grocery shelves which are=20 said to have DNA alterations. The IFIC wants to reassure the public of the safety of GM foods, so it avoids words like: Frankenfoods Hitler biotech chemical DNA experiments manipulate money safety scientists radiation roulette gene-splicing gene gun random Instead, good PR for GM foods contains words like: hybrids natural order beauty choice bounty cross-breeding diversity earth farmer organic wholesome It's basic Freudian/Tony Robbins word association. The fact that GM foods are not hybrids that have been subjected to the slow and careful scientific methods of real crossbreeding doesn't really matter. This is pseudoscience, not science. Form is everything and substance just a passi= ng myth.(Trevanian) Who do you think funds the International Food Information Council? Take a wild guess. Right - Monsanto, DuPont, Frito-Lay, Coca Cola, Nutrasweet = -=20 those in a position to make fortunes from GM foods. (Stauber p 20) Characteristics Of Good Propaganda As the science of mass control evolved, PR firms developed further=20 guidelines for effective copy. Here are some of the gems: dehumanize the attacked party by labeling and name calling speak in glittering generalities using emotionally positive words when covering something up, don't use plain English; stall for time; distract get endorsements from celebrities, churches, sports figures, street people - anyone who has no expertise in the subject at hand the 'plain folks' ruse: us billionaires are just like you when minimizing outrage, don't say anything memorable, point out the=20 benefits of what just happened, and avoid moral issues Keep this list. Start watching for these techniques. Not hard to find -=20 look at today's paper or tonight's TV news. See what they're doing; these guys are good! But it's only the beginning, not the end. GOAL Post is currently sent to more than 1,000 Washingtonians statewide. It's up to YOU to copy GOAL Post and get the word out to your family members, co-workers, gun club members, and shooting or hunting partners. This is called grassroots lobbying and is a significant means of influencing the outcome of bills under consideration. Working together, we can protect our fundamental right to keep and bear arms, as guaranteed by both the U.S. and Washington state Constitutions. The 2002 Regular Session of the Washington state legislature begins on Monday, 14 January. This is the "short" session, and last 60 days. The session formally ends "sine die" by midnight on Thursday, 14 March. If the legislature's business is not finished, it may be called back in 30 day increments for a special session. The Democrats now control the entire legislative apparatus, from the House of Representatives (50-48) to the Senate (25-24) to the Governor's office. While the parties are very close in numbers, Democrat leadership under Speaker of the House Frank Chopp (D-Seattle) and Senate Majority Leader Sid Snyder (D-Long Beach) control the agenda, along with other Democrat leaders. They determine which bills move through the process and which do not get hearings. Theoretically there will be no gridlock this year, and the Democrat worldview will prevail. Time will tell. As this is the second year of our legislative biennium (two year cycle), bills introduced but not passed in the last session are still "in play." A list of those bills is included in the "Bill Status" section below. Summaries of these bills are also included. A brief description of the legislative process is available at http://www.leg.wa.gov/wsladm/help/howbill.htm GOAL Post is published weekly during session, time permitting, and will normally come out Friday evening or over the weekend. Typically it runs about four pages, although this first issue is longer to provide background date. It thus summarizes the previous week's activities and provides a forecast of future events. GOAL Post consists of several sections. First is a headline and narrative section, describing events and activities. This is followed by a "Bill Status" section, providing a listing of gun-related bills filed in the legislature, their prime sponsors, and where the bill currently sits in the process. As new bills are filed, a brief description of the bill is provided. GOAL's position on each bill is given. If bills of interest are scheduled for a public hearing, executive session or floor action, that will be described next. Individuals are encouraged to attend public hearings, and to provide testimony for or against selected bills. Bills scheduled for executive session (committee votes) will be listed, along with the names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of committee members who need to be contacted. A description of the public hearing process, and tips about testifying, may be found at the Legislative web site at http://www/leg.wa.gov/legis/testify/testify.htm Telephone numbers for the Legislative Hotline (toll free number) are included, along with a section describing how to obtain copies of bills and other reports from the Legislative web site or the Legislative Bill Room, and a link to TV Washington is provided. Committee hearings and some floor sessions are broadcast over TVW (both voice only and televised), and hearings are also archived for later retrieval. It declares the state Constitution the supreme law of the state, and would allow individuals who rights have been violated under the color of authority to seek damages in the courts. This is essentially the same bill filed in past year by Senator Roach, who is a co-sponsor of this bill. Passage of this bill would offer a major safeguard for firearm rights in Washington. The bill is currently awaiting action in Senate Ways & Means. SUPPORT SB 5177 would eliminate the state pistol registry, a bill first offered several years ago by Representative Cathy McMorris. McMorris has filed a counterpart bill, HB 1737. SUPPORT SB 5507 focuses primarily on parenting plans but reiterates loss of firearms rights and CPLs for individuals subject to restraining orders. OPPOSE SB 5543 is Governor Locke's bill addressing school safety and bullying. At this point it does not mention firearms; keep an eye on this one. NEUTRAL SB 5673 is the Senate counterpart to HB 1121, the "Whitney Graves" bill. Unless amended to include ALL dangerous objects, OPPOSE. SB 5928, requested by DF&W, would require licensed hunters under the age of 14 to be supervised by an adult when hunting. OPPOSE. SB 5935 is the Senate counterpart to HB 1955, reforming civil asset forfeiture law. SUPPORT SB 6123 by Washington Ceasefire would require ALL firearm sales or transfers at or near gun shows be conducted through a federally-licensed firearm dealer. STRONGLY OPPOSE HB 1121 is a reintroduction of the 1999 version of this bill. On the one hand, the bill would narrow the prosecutorial options if an adult leaves a firearm where a child can access it; on the other, it continues the demonization of guns. The bill passed out of House Criminal Justice & Corrections and is being held in House Judiciary. Unless the bill is amended to include ALL dangerous objects, not just guns, OPPOSE. HB 1148 removes the requirement to prove knowledge the gun was there to charge an individual with unlawful possession of a firearm, but adds an affirmative defense provision for "unwitting knowledge" with the burden of proof on the defendant. The bill is too broad in its reach, and imposes a dual standard for weighing evidence within a single trial. The bill will reportedly be amended to focus on felons only. IF AMENDED, NEUTRAL. HB 1224 would prohibit cities and counties from filing lawsuits against gun manufacturers. At least seventeen other states have passed similar legislation, including a bill signed by then-Governor George W. Bush. SUPPORT HB 1226 would extend the RCW 9.41.280 "gun free school zone" down to public and private pre-schools and day care facilities, including home day care facilities. OPPOSE HB 1484 would ensure that individuals acquitted of a serious offense by reason of insanity would have the same disability had they been convicted. The bill has been amended to remove juvenile language. SUPPORT HB 1485 would amend the state Gun Free School Zone Act to raise the penalty to a Class C felony (vice gross misdemeanor) if a student takes a firearm to school. While the bill gives prosecutors some discretionary power to decline felony charges, the language should be strengthened to preclude "unintended consequences" such as charging student-hunters or others with non-criminal intent. For example, if a school drop-out gang member takes a gun to school to settle scores with a student, and that student as a gun for protection (a clear judgmental error on the student's part), the gangster is charged with a gross misdemeanor, while the student takes a felony hit. Another well-intentioned bill that just casts too wide a net. Unless amended, OPPOSE. HB 1604 would add hospitals to the list of places where firearms are prohibited in RCW 9.41.300, to include firearms possessed by CPL holders. OPPOSE HB 1737 is the counterpart bill to SB 5177. SUPPORT HB 1944 addresses gun shows by title, but contains no specific language. At this time it is a "place-holder" bill, satisfying procedural requirements should agreement be reached on gun show background check language. NEUTRAL HB 2000 expands non-warrant arrest authority of law enforcement officers and allows federal law enforcement officers to enforce state laws down to infraction level (most traffic offenses). Unless amended to exclude federal officers, OPPOSE. HB 2202 by Washington Ceasefire would require ALL firearm sales or transfers at or near gun shows be conducted through a federally-licensed firearm dealer. "This proposed legislation, which has been introduced in a dozen states already, gives governors astonishing powers, under vaguely defined guidelines, to combat a bioterrorism emergency that may never happen," said Steve Dasbach, executive director of the Libertarian Party. "Even in light of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Americans should be very reluctant to grant governors these sweeping powers. Just because something is done in the name of 'combating terrorism' doesn't make it right, or necessary, or constitutional." The draft Model State Emergency Health Powers Act (MEHPA), written by the Centers for Disease Control, is designed to help state governments cope with a sudden outbreak of smallpox, anthrax, or other bioterrorism attack. Health experts predict that every state will consider the 40- page model legislation at some point this year. The legislation: * Gives governors the power to declare a public health emergency, without consulting public health officials, the legislature, or the courts. * Defines infectious disease as any "disease caused by a living organism," which "may, or may not, be transmissible from person to person, animal to person, or insect to person." Some health experts say the definition is so broad that it could include the outbreak of a dangerous flu or virus. * Allows public health officials to mandate quarantines for people suspected of having an "infectious disease," and require vaccinations and medical exams. Doctors could be forced to provide them, and fined if they refuse. * Permits states to mobilize the "organized militia" to seize control of any private property the governor deems "reasonable and necessary" to cope with the emergency, such as "communication devices, real estate, fuels, food, clothing, and health care facilities." * Allows the governor to destroy private property alleged to be hazardous to public health, in some cases without compensation. * Empowers the state to "control and restrict alcoholic beverages, firearms, explosives, and combustibles." The first problem with granting governors such awesome powers is that the definition of an "emergency" is so vague, said Dasbach. According to MEHPA, a public health emergency is "an occurrence or imminent threat of an illness or health condition...caused by bioterrorism...that poses a substantial risk of a significant number of human fatalities." "Is a significant number five, the number of Americans already killed by the anthrax attacks?" he asked. "Is it 500? Is it 5,000? Unfortunately, if your state passes this legislation, a bioterrorism attack will be whatever your governor says it is." The second problem is that MEHPA appears to be an overreaction to a past government failure, said Dasbach. "A primary function of the federal government, as defined in the Constitution, is to protect Americans against foreign attack," he noted. "On September 11, the government failed in that crucial role. "Now, instead of reflexively expanding government power at the state level, perhaps it's time to ask why politicians were so unprepared in the first place. "Perhaps, if they weren't so busy squandering tax money on things like sports stadiums, museums, welfare programs, and business subsidies, they might already have a sensible, practical, limited bioterrorism response in place -- instead of having to scramble to pass a hastily written law that, frankly, should make every American apprehensive." -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: 2.6.2 ----------------------- end forwarded message from Swftl@aol.com ----------------------- -- RKBA! ***** Blessings On Thee, Oh Israel! ***** 4-19! ----------------+----------+--------------------------+--------------------- An _EFFECTIVE_ | Insured | All matter is vibration. | Let he who hath no weapon in every | by COLT; | -- Max Plank | weapon sell his hand = Freedom | DIAL | In the beginning was the | garment and buy a on every side! | 1911-A1. | word. -- The Bible | sword.--Jesus Christ ----------------+----------+--------------------------+--------------------- Constitutional Government is dead, LONG LIVE THE CONSTITUTION!!!!! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill Vance Subject: War Hero treated like sh*t. There are plenty of reasons not to trust a member of the "Gang of 535" who hang out on the Hill. It's probably overkill - but if they strip-searched EVERY Congressman and Senator EVERY time they boarded a plane, perhaps we'd a some more reasonable response to the threat of terrorism. But this? This simply goes way, way, WAY too far. Heads should roll. K. ============= Medal of Honor fails to impress airline security By Joyce Howard Price THE WASHINGTON TIMES Airline security personnel at Phoenix's international airport questioned a retired general and war hero about the Medal of Honor he was carrying before he boarded a flight to Washington, DC Top Stories "They just didn't know what it was but they acted like I shouldn't be carrying it on," retired Marine Corps Gen. Joseph J. Foss of Scottsdale, Ariz., said yesterday in a telephone interview. "I kept explaining that it was the highest medal you can receive from the military in this country, but nobody listened," he said. Gen. Foss, an 86-year-old former South Dakota governor whose resume also includes stints as president of the National Rifle Association and as commissioner of the old American Football League, said he was "hassled" about the medal by two separate security crews at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix. He was trying to board an America West plane Jan. 11 to attend an NRA meeting in Arlington. "I received the medal in 1943 from President Franklin Roosevelt," after shooting down 26 enemy planes in the Pacific, said Gen. Foss, who was a Marine fighter pilot during World War II. "It states all that stuff on the back of the medal," he said. "I was held up for 45 minutes, while they decided what to do about the medal. I almost missed my flight, as they went back and forth," Gen. Foss said. He stressed that he would not have boarded the plane if he had been stopped from taking the medal aboard. "I'm one of only about 140 surviving Medal of Honor recipients," he said. Gen. Foss acknowledges that a commemorative metal nail file also bearing a Medal of Honor inscription and a dummy bullet were also in the same pocket of his sports coat as the military medal. Those items were seized before he boarded the plane, but he was allowed to keep the Medal of Honor. Metal nail files and other instruments with blades are prohibited from aircraft cabins under Federal Aviation Administration regulations that went into effect after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Bullets and other ammunition are not permitted on an aircraft in a passenger's possession. However, the bullet taken from Gen. Foss was harmless, as it has a hole in it so that it will fit on a key chain. An FAA spokesman was unable to say whether a dummy bullet would be banned under the federal regulations. But he pointed out that airlines are allowed to impose restrictions that go beyond those of the federal agency. Gen. Foss said he normally doesn't travel with his medal. "I do not carry the medal around with me. But I had it with me this time to show to cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point," where he was a guest speaker last week. Patty Nowack, spokeswoman for America West, said she could not respond to specific questions about the Foss case, as she cannot verify he flew on the airline. She could not say whether there would be any security concerns about a medal but that it would cause a metal detector to go off. "Our primary objective is to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and employees. We're not trying to single out any individual," she said yesterday. Gen. Foss says he believes his one-way, first-class ticket, coupled with the 10-gallon hat and western boots he was wearing, made him seem suspicious to security personnel. Because he wears a pacemaker, he said he couldn't go through a metal detector and so he had to be "frisked" by guards. Also, Gen. Foss said, "I had to take off my cowboy boots three times [before boarding], as well as my belt and necktie. I compared the situation to bailing out to land in a foreign country." He said security personnel went so far as to remove razor blades from his luggage, which also went beyond FAA requirements. Jim Baker, chief lobbyist for the NRA, said he understands the need for "extra security." But he questions how an 86-year-old man bearing the Medal of Honor could be considered a security risk. "There appears to be a need to incorporate common sense" with the additional security that's being imposed, Mr. Baker said. ----------------------- end forwarded message from kurt --------------------- -- RKBA! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill Vance Subject: FAA - Fight With Fists/Feet, Not firearms ??? His crime? He debunked almost all of its claims about the earth's perilous state. Now he is a marked man. David Thomas meets him Bjorn Lomborg does not look like a dangerous revolutionary. When the 37-year-old political science professor from Aarhus University in Denmark slipped into London on Friday afternoon he was wearing trainers, jeans, a brightly-coloured cagoule and a knapsack, just like any other skinny, blond, blue-eyed Scandinavian backpacker. But to the nabobs of the international environmental movement - the researchers, bureaucrats, politicians and protesters whose most passionate beliefs and professional livelihoods are staked on the near-religious conviction that the world is confronting imminent environmental catastrophe - Lomborg is the anti-Christ. This former ecological activist and member of Greenpeace has had the temerity to suggest that the world is not coming to an end. And the result, as he revealed last week, is that he has become a marked man. It all began in August when he published a book entitled The Sceptical Environmentalist which reported in painstaking statistical detail that the world's resources were not running out, its species were not rushing to extinction and global warming might not turn out to be quite so disastrous after all. As Lomborg puts it: "It's unrealistic to say that everything is getting better. But we need to get a sense of priority. For example, the level of pollutants is dropping dramatically in the developed world. The air in London is cleaner today than at any time since 1585. The average person in London was much worse off in the past than today. "It is worrying that the rainforest is shrinking. But the fact that people are cutting down trees doesn't mean that the world is coming to an end. Even by the most pessimistic scenarios, people in the developing world will be richer in 100 years time than we are now. "So, by then, a Bangladeshi would also be concerned about the environment and able to afford to set aside land and re-grow forest. It's a temporary problem. We won't lose the rainforest forever." For daring to utter such eco-heresies, Lomborg has received threats from enraged environmentalists and now opens mail with extreme care for fear of what parcels might contain. So far, however, his experience is marked more by farce than tragedy. Last September, while preparing for a personal appearance at the Borders bookshop in Oxford, Lomborg was hit in the face with a baked Alaska pie by Mark Lynas, an environmentalist campaigning to save the Arctic wilderness. "I was arranging my slides and I was facing down, towards the projector," Lomborg recalls. "Suddenly everything turned white. I was astonished. But I took some of the pie out of my eyes, tasted it and said: `At least it tastes good.' I'm surprised I had so much composure." From the moment that Lomborg first published his ideas as a series of articles in the Danish newspaper Politiken, campaigners have been lining up to assault him as an intellectual fraudster who is motivated by a fascistic desire to discredit the environmental Left. The Danish environment minister even sent Lomborg's articles to 2,500 civil servants, instructing them to report any mistakes they could find. Lomborg reports ruefully: "A lot of my Left-wing friends had a hard time with me being so 'immoral' as to say that the environment was actually getting better. There's a presumption that I'd be out there felling rainforests if I could." The science magazine Nature went so far as to declare that Lomborg "employs the strategy of those who argue that gay men are not dying of Aids, that Jews weren't singled out by the Nazis and so on". The accusation was particularly tasteless since Lomborg happens to be gay. But then nothing infuriates ideologues more than a traitor to the cause. And, to ecologists, that is just what Lomborg is. "I was a comfortable, Left-wing, worried kind of guy. If you'd asked me in 1980, I could not have imagined that we wouldn't be running out of resources by now. I'd go to rallies and marches, but nothing where I could get arrested. I'm way too suburban and academic for that." But then, in 1997, he read an article about a renegade American professor called Julian Simon who had for decades been using official US Government statistics to disprove claims made by environmentalists. In the late 1960s eco-evangelists such as the best-selling author Paul Erlich stated: "In the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programmes embarked on now . . . Before 1985 mankind will enter an age of scarcity in which accessible supplies of many key minerals will be nearing depletion." Simon argued the opposite: that resources would become more abundant and cheaper, and events proved him right. Even so, when Lomborg read about Simon's work, summed up in a 1995 book called The State of Humanity, he still held the orthodox ecological world view. "I was totally sure Simon was wrong," he says. "I thought: `It should be easy to show that he's wrong, and it'll be fun debunking him.' So I got my students to go through a chapter of his book each to check his statistics. And to our surprise most of what he said was correct." Lomborg gives one simple example of the deviance between theory and practice; the conservationists' claim that the world is losing up to 40,000 species of animals and plants to extinction every year and is heading towards the loss of 50 per cent of all species. This estimate is based, Lomborg claims, not on observation, but extrapolation from theoretical equations. "The theory says that if you cut down 90 per cent of a forest, you lose 50 per cent of the species it contains. But that doesn't seem to be confirmed if you look at specific examples. The Brazilian Atlantic rainforest was almost entirely cut down, mainly in the 19th century. "By now, many of its species should be extinct. But, as it turns out, the Brazilian Zoological Society and the World Conservation Union compiled a list of 300 species of [indigenous] mammals, birds and plants, and not one of them had become extinct. "It would be OK for the theory if only 40 per cent or 45 per cent of species had become extinct. But if you find nought per cent extinct, that seriously questions the whole idea because it's dramatically not true." Lomborg's essential thesis is not anti-environmental at all. He doesn't want to pillage the planet. He simply argues that environmental protection should be based on rational analysis and sensible risk-assessment rather than scare-mongering and ideology. "The underlying belief behind a lot of recycling policy is that we're running out of resources," he says. "It's a spectacular example of a case where old-style environmentalists were simply wrong. But many people still believe it. Recycling makes sense to a certain extent, but we shouldn't do it religiously. " We're not going to run out of resources and we're not going to run out of space to put our garbage. Even if the US increased the amount of garbage produced per head by 15 per cent a year, and doubled its population, the total amount of garbage produced by the US in the 21st century could be put in a 100ft high pile covering a 28 x 28 kilometre square. "In the context of North America, it would be nothing. Garbage siting is a political problem - no one wants it in their backyard. But it's not a space problem." Similarly, vast sums are due to be spent on combating global warming. But, says Lomborg: "We can help the developing world so much better by doing other things, like giving them clean drinking water and proper sanitation. "For $200 billion - which is the cost of implementing the Kyoto Agreement [in which the industrial nations pledged to cut their emissions of greenhouse gases] for one year - you could permanently provide clean drinking water for everyone. That would save two million people dying and half a billion people becoming seriously ill every year." For all our many problems, he says, the world's inhabitants are, on average, richer, healthier, longer-living and better-fed than at any time in the history of humanity. "In 20 years' time," says Lomborg, "we'll look back and wonder why we worried so much. Environmentalism won't be a religion any more, it'll just be good commonsense." For all the demonisation he has faced, Lomborg still seems remarkably upbeat. His book has sold well on both sides of the Atlantic, although he insists that, "you don't make a lot of money, not compared to the hours you put in". And he has become a minor celebrity. That, though, is not what gives him the most satisfaction. "It's not fun being famous," he says, and then grins, "but it is fun being right." Speaking of which: on the morning after my interview with Lomborg, the Today programme on Radio 4 reported an interesting scientific finding. You know how the Antarctic ice is supposed to be melting, as part of the great catastrophe of global warming? Well, the scientists have just taken another look at the ice. They've measured it very carefully. And it's getting thicker. ----------------------- end forwarded message from Howard Rothenburg ----------------------- -- RKBA! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill Vance Subject: Toddler Property Laws (fwd) Great OT (fwd) Date: 21 Jan 2002 21:21:09 -0800 (PST) ----------------------- begin forwarded message from Swftl@aol.com ----------------------- >----- Original Message ----- >From: Gary Pansier >Sent: Wednesday, December 26, 2001 4:22 PM >Subject: NESARA-Toddler Property Laws.htm Commentary Toddler Property Laws If I like it, it's mine. Be feared. 2. Identify the type of terrorists you face, and know your enemy as well as you possibly can. Although tactics may be similar, strategies for dealing with practical vs. apocalyptic terrorists can differ widely. Practical terrorists may have legitimate grievances that deserve consideration, although their methods cannot be tolerated. Apocalyptic terrorists, no matter their rhetoric, seek your destruction and must be killed to the last man. The apt metaphor is cancer; you cannot hope for success if you only cut out part of the tumor. For the apocalyptic terrorist, evading your efforts can easily be turned into a public triumph. Our bloodiest successes will create far fewer terrorists and sympathizers than our failures. 3. Do not be afraid to be powerful. Cold War-era gambits of proportionate response and dialog may have some utility in dealing with practical terrorists, but they are counter-productive in dealing with apocalyptic terrorists. Our great strengths are wealth and raw power. When we fail to bring those strengths to bear, we contribute to our own defeat. For a superpower to think small, which has been our habit across the last decade at least,is self-defeating folly. Our responses to terrorist acts should make the world gasp. 4. Speak bluntly. Euphemisms are interpreted as weakness by our enemies and mislead the American people. Speak of killing terrorists and destroying their organizations. Timid speech leads to timid actions. Explain when necessary, but do not apologize. Expressions of regret are never seen as a mark of decency by terrorists or their supporters, but only as a sign that our will is faltering. Blame the terrorists as the root cause whenever operations have unintended negative consequences. Never go on the rhetorical defensive. 5. Concentrate on winning the propaganda war where it is winnable. Focus on keeping or enhancing the support from allies and well-disposed clients, but do not waste an inordinate amount of effort trying to win unwinnable hearts and minds. Convince hostile populations through victory. 6. Do not be drawn into a public dialog with terrorists, especially not with apocalyptic terrorists. You cannot win. You legitimize the terrorists by addressing them even through a third medium, and their extravagant claims will resound more successfully on their own home ground than anything you can say. Ignore absurd accusations, and never let the enemy's claims slow or sidetrack you. The terrorist wants you to react, and your best means of unbalancing him and his plan is to ignore his accusations. 7. Avoid planning creep. Within our vast bureaucratic system, too many voices compete for attention and innumerable agendas, often selfish and personal--intrude on any attempt to act decisively. Focus on the basic mission: the destruction of the terrorists with all the moral, intellectual and practical rigor you can bring to bear. All other issues, from future nation-building, to alliance consensus, to humanitarian concerns are secondary. 8. Maintain resolve. Especially in the Middle East and Central Asia, experts and diplomats will always present you with a multitude of good reasons for doing nothing, or for doing too little (or for doing exactly the wrong thing). Fight as hard as you can within the system to prevent diplomats from gaining influence over the strategic campaign. Although their intentions are often good, our diplomats and their obsolete strategic views are the terrorists' unwitting allies, and diplomats are extremely jealous of military success and military authority in their region (where their expertise is never as deep or subtle as they believe it to be). Beyond the problem with our diplomats, the broader forces of bureaucratic entropy are an internal threat. The counter-terrorist campaign must be not only resolute, but constantly self-rejuvenating in ideas, techniques, military and inter-agency combinations, and sheer energy. Old hands must be stimulated constantly by new ideas. 9. When in doubt, hit harder than you think necessary. Success will be forgiven. Even the best-intentioned failure will not. When military force is used against terrorist networks, it should be used with such power that it stuns even our allies. We must get over our cowardice in means. While small-scale raids and other knife-point operations are useful against individual targets, broader operations should be overwhelming. Of course, targeting limitations may inhibit some efforts but, whenever possible, maximum force should be used in simultaneous operations at the very beginning of a campaign. Do not hesitate to supplement initial target lists with extensive bombing attacks on nothing if they can increase the initial psychological impact. Demonstrate power whenever you can. Show, don't tell. 10. Whenever legal conditions permit, kill terrorists on the spot (do not give them a chance to surrender, if you can help it). Contrary to academic wisdom, the surest way to make a martyr of a terrorist is to capture, convict and imprison him, leading to endless efforts by sympathizers to stage kidnappings, hijacking and other events intended to liberate the imprisoned terrorist(s). This is war, not law enforcement. 11. Never listen to those who warn that ferocity on our part reduces us to the level of the terrorists. That is the argument of the campus, not of the battlefield, and it insults America's service members and the American people. Historically, we have proven, time after time, that we can do a tough, dirty job for our country without any damage to our nation's moral fabric (Hiroshima and Nagasaki did not interfere with American democracy, values or behavior). 12. Spare and protect innocent civilians whenever possible, but do not let the prospect of civilian casualties interfere with ultimate mission accomplishment. This is a fight to protect the American people, and we must do so whatever the cost, or the price in American lives may be devastating. In a choice between us and them, the choice is always us. (THE ULTIMATE 'BOTTOM LINE'). 13. Do not allow the terrorists to hide behind religion. Apocalyptic terrorists cite religion as a justification for attacking us; in turn, we cannot let them hide behind religious holidays, taboos, strictures or even sacred terrain. We must establish a consistent reputation for relentless pursuit and destruction of those who kill our citizens. Until we do this, our hesitation will continue to strengthen our enemy's ranks and his resolve. 14. Do not allow third parties to broker a peace, a truce, or any pause in operations. One of the most difficult challenges in fighting terrorism on a global scale is the drag produced by nervous allies. We must be single-minded. The best thing we can do for our allies in the long-term is to be so resolute and so strong that they value their alliance with us all the more. We must recognize the innate strength of our position and stop allowing regional leaders with counterproductive local agendas to subdue or dilute our efforts (Read here, "the Saudis"). 15. Don't flinch. If an operation goes awry and friendly casualties are unexpectedly high, immediately bolster morale and the military's image by striking back swiftly in a manner that inflicts the maximum possible number of casualties on the enemy and his supporters. Hit back as graphically as possible, to impress upon the local and regional players that you weren't badly hurt or deterred in the least. 16. Do not worry about alienating already-hostile populations. 17. Whenever possible, humiliate your enemy in the eyes of his own people. Do not try to use reasonable arguments against him. Shame him publicly, in any way you can. Create doubt where you cannot excite support. Most apocalyptic terrorists, especially, come from cultures of male vanity. Disgrace them at every opportunity. Done successfully, this both degrades them in the eyes of their followers and supporters, and provokes the terrorist to respond, increasing his vulnerability. 18. If the terrorists hide, strike what they hold dear, using clandestine means and, whenever possible, foreign agents to provoke them to break cover and react. Do not be squeamish. Your enemy is not. Subtlety is not a superpower strength but the raw power to do that which is necessary is our great advantage. We forget that, while the world may happily chide or accuse us--or complain of our inhumanity--no one can stop us if we maintain our strength of will. Much of the world will complain no matter what we do. Hatred of America is the default position of failed individuals and failing states around the world, in every civilization, and there is nothing we can do to change their minds. We refuse to understand how much of humanity will find excuses for evil, so long as the evil strikes those who are more successful than the apologists themselves. This is as true of American academics, whose eagerness to declare our military efforts a failure is unflagging, or European clerics, who still cannot forgive America's magnanimity at the end of World War II, as it is of unemployed Egyptians or Pakistanis. The psychologically marginalized are at least as dangerous as the physically deprived. 19. Do not allow the terrorists sanctuary in any country, at any time, under any circumstances. Counter-terrorist operations must, above all, be relentless. This does not necessarily mean that military operations will be constantly underway sometimes it will be surveillance efforts, or deception plans, or operations by other agencies. But the overall effort must never pause for breath. We must be faster, more resolute, more resourceful and, ultimately, even more uncompromising than our enemies. 20. Never declare victory. Announce successes and milestones. But never give the terrorists a chance to embarrass you after a public pronouncement that the war is over. 21. Impress upon the minds of terrorists and potential terrorists everywhere, and upon the populations and governments inclined to support them, that American retaliation will be powerful and uncompromising. You will never deter fanatics, but you can frighten those who might support, harbor or attempt to use terrorists for their own ends. Our basic task in the world today is to restore a sense of American power, capabilities and resolve. We must be hard, or we will be struck wherever we are soft. It is folly for charity to precede victory. First win, then unclench your fist. 22. Do everything possible to make terrorists and their active supporters live in terror themselves. Turn the tide psychologically and practically. While this will not deter hardcore apocalyptic terrorists, it will dissipate their energies as they try to defend themselves and fear will deter many less-committed supporters of terror. Do not be distracted by the baggage of the term assassination. This is a war. The enemy, whether a hijacker or a financier, violates the laws of war by his refusal to wear a uniform and by purposely targeting civilians. He is by definition a war criminal. On our soil, he is either a spy or a saboteur, and not entitled to the protections of the U.S. Constitution. Those who abet terrorists must grow afraid to turn out the lights to go to sleep. 23. Never accept the consensus of the Washington intelligentsia, which looks backward to past failures, not forward to future successes. 24. In dealing with Islamic apocalyptic terrorists, remember that their most cherished symbols are fewer and far more vulnerable than are the West's. Ultimately, no potential target can be regarded as off-limits when the United States is threatened with mass casualties(Take out Mecca?) Worry less about offending foreign sensibilities and more about protecting Americans. 25. Do not look for answers in recent history, which is still unclear and subject to personal emotion. Begin with the study of the classical world specifically Rome, which is the nearest model to the present-day United States. Mild with subject peoples, to whom they brought the rule of ethical law, the Romans in their rise and at their apogee were implacable with their enemies. The utter destruction of Carthage brought centuries of local peace, while the later empire's attempts to appease barbarians consistently failed. (Unless, of course, you value your career in army, police, intelligence more than the long-term good of your country.) Britain pursued policies just like this in Ireland for about 100 years and lost. It pursued them another 80 years in Northern Ireland and didn't win, at least. Fighting 'terrorism' is betting against human ingenuity. Where 'terrorists', of whatever class, have significant community support, no army or police force has won. Costs have always been incredible, and have often destroyed the power opposing the terrorists. This becomes more true as our civilization and economy stand upon an ever-higher pinnacle of technology: more infrastructure to protect, easier to destruct. Didn't anyone learn ANYTHING from our recent anthrax experience? Incredible costs and disruption from a few thousand dollars worth of cultured/treated germs. Yet, far from the worst that human ingenuity can devise. Didn't anyone learn ANYTHING from our recent 9/11 experience? 19 people with a $500K worth of training, planning, support did several $Billion in damage directly, and will cost the us 100s of $Billions in defense. Israel has pursued polices like those recommended below for 50 years: the terrorists don't stop and Israel couldn't exist without $5B in US aid every year. Switzerland doesn't have a terrorism problem, and does have the highest standard of living in the world. We spend $40B on intelligence every year and $320B on defense, didn't stop 9/11 or the anthrax problem. Our wonderful gov proposes spending even more to actually 'protect our homeland'. Right. Bring our troops home. Resign from the UN. Stop all foreign aid. Get out of the WTO and adopt simple trade policies. Cut our armies to what it takes to defend our borders. Cut taxes by 80%. Then we would a) avoid a terrorism problem in the long term (not the short-term) and b) become a super power in reality, rather than the unstable empire we are now. Empires, BTW, have had a short life in the 20th century. As a national strategy, empire is a loser. Lew Glendenning -----Original Message----- Behalf Of Bill Vance Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2002 3:43 AM ----------------------- begin forwarded message from kurt --------------------- In my email this week... ==== Fighting Terror - Dos and Don'ts for a Super Power 1. Be feared.
