Conference Seeks To Ban Guns By Jimmy Moore Talon News June 3, 2003 WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- The Gun Owners of America are concerned about a "sinister plan" to outlaw guns under consideration in the United Nations. The U.N. will be holding a worldwide conference called a "Week of Action Against Small Arms" beginning next week. "Small Arms," as defined by the U.N., encompasses many of the revolvers, pistols, and rifles commonly used by American gun owners. The Gun Owners of America say the agenda of the U.N. on this issue is not covert, but rather it is unabashed. The U.N. "unembarrassedly admits that it wants to strip small arms from all non-government individuals [like you] because the possession of such weapons allows people to oppose the U.N. itself," said Lawrence Auster, a Newsmax.com reporter who covered a similar effort by the U.N. in 2001. The U.N. will attempt to use this upcoming conference to put pressure on member nations, such as the United States, to apply tougher gun laws. But, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) has come to the defense of gun owners. He recently submitted H.R. 1146, a bill that would allow the United States to leave the U.N. He is lobbying House Republicans to allow a floor vote on his bill. "The U.S. House routinely spends 15 minutes re-naming post offices," Paul said. "It should spend 15 minutes to answer the question an increasing number of Americans are asking: Should the United States continue to support the United Nations?" Furthermore, Rep. Paul has created an online petition for Americans to show their support for H.R. 1146. The petition is located online at www.Just15.org. Provisions of Rep. Paul's bill include the following: -- Relinquishing all U.S. participation in the United Nations and any subsidiary groups and agreements. -- Removing the U.N. headquarters out of New York City and revoking all of its governmental privileges. -- Ending U.S. financial support for U.N. operational and "peacekeeping" missions. The deadline for the petition is June 23, 2003. Patriotism is not a crime, dissent does not constitute terrorism, and enslavement will NEVER be an option. ----------------------- end forwarded message from BOBWORN@aol.com --------------------- -- RKBA! ***** Blessings On Thee, Oh Israel! ***** 4-19! ----------------+----------+--------------------------+--------------------- An _EFFECTIVE_ | Insured | All matter is vibration. | Let he who hath no weapon in every | by COLT; | -- Max Planck | weapon sell his hand = Freedom | DIAL | In the beginning was the | garment and buy a on every side! | 1911-A1. | word. -- The Bible | sword.--Jesus Christ ----------------+----------+--------------------------+--------------------- Constitutional Government is dead; LONG LIVE THE CONSTITUTION!!!!! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: roc@xpresso.seaslug.org Subject: "Non-Offensive Pepsi"................. The world does not gasp in dismay as Britney Spears discards another article of clothing. People do not recoil in shocked disbelief as an Eminem song pollutes the airwaves. Polite society does not cross to the other side of the street as Madonna walks by. The filth that spews daily from television barely provokes a shrug. Those clinging to morality may be saddened and sickened, but not shocked. Degeneracy as a form of rebellion is trite today. We have not changed the definition of rebellion in 25 years. My generation tries hard to be edgy and rebellious, but they encounter difficulty when Mom and Dad are being rebellious in the exact same way using the exact same methods. Degener- ate rock music is so integrated into the culture that gro- cery stores play it _ can it still be described as revolu- tionary or counterculture? Men with long hair were a staple of the hippie generation. Today, this look is associated both with aspiring rebels on college campuses and portly middle-aged motorcyclists who grow a braid down their backs to disguise the paucity of hair on top. Look through your parent's college yearbook at those hopeful little rebels. You will find their duplicates at a high school near you, still idealistically convinced that they can shock a jaded world. Glance through headlines from 1973; talk to a parent and discover that immorality, premarital sex, and partying are assimilated parts of the culture rather than venues of rebellion. Generation Gap Two generations ago, agitators literally created the "generation gap." They defined the older generation as the enemy, and they encouraged the younger generation to become a counterculture. They wanted to see the moral culture overthrown and replaced with a culture of license. They succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, and now American mainstream culture is synonymous with indecency and immoral- ity. Today, can we say that anyone who goes against the tide of evil is literally "counterculture"? Is the teen who rejects the warmed over musical offerings of his peer's culture _ in favor of, say, classical music _ the new rebel? Modern Sodom is so degenerate that virtue is the only shocking medium left. Gang members fail to startle people with their clothing, but a Mennonite girl who covers her head with a little white doily will turn people's heads to an extent that gang bangers would envy. A girl who wears a skirt and believes in modesty can empathize with the fake rebel's cliched cries of "no one understands me," because sin-steeped society cannot fathom virtue. Breaking the Mold A growing number of young people are discovering the thrill of breaking out of society's mold. "Counterculture" might be an apt term, but the enemies of freedom and decency grabbed the term first, so perhaps "counter-immorality" or "restorationism" is descriptive. We, a small but growing minority, spurn the conventional trappings of our genera- tion. Not for us the multiple piercings of our peers. We disregard our relatives' stares of disbelief as we purchase season tickets to the symphony. We ignore the public prating about "safe" sex and resolutely maintain our chastity. Restorationists did not spring from nowhere. Many of us graduated as homeschoolers; we are the products of parents who finally rebelled against their generation's lifestyle. Rather than be exposed to the routine and formulaic depravi- ty promoted as the only lifestyle choice by "conventional" teachers in public schools, we explored unconventional education. Restorationists have developed the desire to break away from our generation. Homeschoolers in particular desire a lifestyle in defiance of the current mores. We are attracted to our grandparents' standards of morality, and we reject the lifestyle of our parents' generation. Our parents, the baby boomers, began and ended as pawns of the establishment they rebelled against. They were sacri- ficed to manipulators who used them to overturn moral stan- dards. Many explored alternative lifestyles, which led to broken homes, disease, and general unhappiness. Those formerly idealistic hippies who did not die young from drugs or disease became cynical and pragmatic. Again they played into the enemy's hands with their indifference _ "it's the economy, stupid!" became their rallying cry. Their wives were sent to work, their children languished in day care, and they drove shiny cars, bought big houses, and played with increasingly expensive toys. They believed they were prosperous, as they increased their credit card debt. A few of them agitate on the far left, a few reject the genera- tion's lifestyle and have migrated to the right, but most of the baby boomers do not want to learn anything that will rock their solid, slightly-left-of-center position. In contrast, their parents erred on the side of ideal- ism. They swept grandly off to World War II or contributed on the home front, fervently believing that their "democra- cy" would transform the world. Few of our grandparents understand the difference between a republic and a democracy and if you dare to imply that Roosevelt possessed foreknowl- edge about the impending attack on Pearl Harbor, then you will feel the force of Grandma's wrath. I do not mean to disparage the WWII generation: They did trust blindly, but their generation had standards of dignity, honor, morality, and virtue. Most elements of their worldview have been incorporated into our philosophy, but restorationists have also inherited a sensible amount of baby boomer cynicism. We will not emulate our naive grandparents; we will not place too much trust in the essential goodness of government. Question authority? No, not really, but we learn about constitution- ally protected rights and we watch out for people who try to threaten those rights. We do look at history, and we soberly observe that people who revert to childhood and give up their rights to Big Mommy government are eventually elimi- nated or live as slaves. We do learn to protect ourselves, just in case. Restorationists are comfortable around fire- arms, not because they intend to go shoot up a school, but because someday they will become capable adults who can defend themselves against anything or anyone, tyrannical government (Heaven forbid!) included. Restorationists identify with the WWII generation more than we identify with our parents' generation. But our philosophy remains distinct: We have synthesized, not dupli- cated. For example, we restorationists grew up with the devastating results of double income families, a trend that our grandparents' generation began shortly after WWII. We saw the results in our friends, ourselves, and even in our parents. Thus, we believe very strongly in the necessity of a stay-at-home mom. Our generation was told that a woman achieves liberation when she seeks employment outside the home and adds a man's traditional workload to her own. This idea is so fully ingrained that few even question the as- sumption that a young woman must plan for a long and stress- ful life: She must survive in the workplace and also carry the lion's share of household work and child rearing. How can we say that a woman is liberated when she carries a double workload and stress level? Real Girl Power Unlike both previous generations, the restorationists fully realize that real girl power is not about pretending we're differently shaped boys. Our mothers bought into a false feminism _ they brought their daughters to work and encouraged them to take over traditionally male jobs, from astronaut to GI Joe. How do we contribute to a woman's liberation when we send her out to unimaginable physical stress and the definite possibility of abuse? Restoration- ists understand that feminine fulfillment is found as women rejoice in what we can do that no man ever can: We can reverently fill our God-given role of mother to a family. Previous generations' ideals have influenced the resto- rationist ideas of feminism, but the greatest and most original restorationist idea is barely a generation old _ home education. Maverick baby boomers from both sides of the political spectrum pioneered the movement as the rest of society looked on in fascinated horror. Simultaneously, the quality of public education deteriorated so drastically that even many apathetic parents woke up. Gradually, society began to accept and practice the new idea as they saw home- schoolers demonstrating the effects of the new educational style. Now, for the first time, we see young families begin- ning their homes with the stated intention of rejecting mainstream educational views. Our parents stumbled across homeschooling, but we have desired it from adolescence. Homeschooling's influence has developed the restorationists into people who will counter their culture in startling ways. Renaissance of Virtue A counterculture teen may differ from his peers in his tastes, but a restorationist is much more than a person who despises decadent music, piercing, and obscene clothing. Restorationists are primarily defined by an unshakeable passionate resolve. Our values are not mere intellectual ideals. Our resolve consists of an ardent zeal united with a strong character that motivates us to act on our beliefs. Because we believe in God, we are resolved that we will maintain our life of virtue despite the temporary pleasures we may sacrifice. Because we believe in family, we are resolved that we will maintain a single-income, home-educat- ed household despite the resultant economic hardships. Because we believe in our country, we are resolved that we will uphold the Constitution and work to restore it, despite the sacrifice we make in time and effort. We are only rebels in the tongue-in-cheek sense. We rebel only as we reject the typical norms of our culture. We do not seek to topple society, as the term counterculture originally implied; we only seek to protect ourselves from the ill effects of current culture. We do not demand that our peers conform to our ways, and we do not conform to their ways. We desire to change people's minds and hearts, because our "rebellion" is so dramatically superior to the same-old, same-old patterns of immorality. Numbers of think- ing people are rejecting their Dark Ages upbringing and joining this new Renaissance of virtue. There are already signs that our numbers are growing. Someday we will be numerous enough that magnificent decency will be the norm and evil will be shocking again. http://www.thenewamerican.com/tna/2003/06-02-2003/vo19no11_rebellion.htm ----------------------- end forwarded message from Rich Martin --------------------- -- RKBA! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: roc@xpresso.seaslug.org Subject: Restore Freedom of Speech to America's Churches (fwd) Date: 12 Jun 2003 01:08:41 -0700 (PDT) ----------------------- begin forwarded message from Margi Crook --------------------- -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [conservativefriends] FYI>>[ALERT] Restore Freedom of Speech to America's Pulpits Date: Mon, 9 Jun 2003 19:57:55 PDT From: carl william spitzer iv Reply-To: conservativefriends@yahoogroups.com ISSUE: Ever heard of the First Amendment? Apparently, it doesn't apply if you're in church. There are limits to what your preacher can say from the pulpit -- limits placed there by the government. Now, a bill introduced in Congress seeks to change the law. If a church speaks out on issues that the IRS deems to be too political, it risks losing its tax-exempt status. But the "Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act" (H.R. 235) would repeal the authority of the Internal Revenue Service to revoke the tax status of a church, temple, or mosque whose clergy speak out. Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC), who introduced the bill, explained how the problem of churches speaking out on political issues arose. "Lyndon Johnson in 1954 put an amendment on a revenue bill that stifled the ministers, priests and rabbis from being able to speak of moral and political issues," Jones said. "That's not what America's about. America's about freedom. And we've got to have freedom in the churches." He said Johnson's amendment has had a chilling effect that fails to define where their speech is actually protected. He also contended the restrictions have not been impartially enforced. "I think all churches should be treated the same," Jones said. "They should have freedom to talk about these issues." ACTION ITEM: All houses of worship SHOULD be treated the same. They should have freedom to talk about any issues affecting any aspect of society -- including politics. Anything else is simply un-American. As Rep. Jones stated, "This legislation goes beyond party lines and theological debates. We must not allow a govern- ment institution to have this kind of chilling effect over America's churches." Rep. Jones' bill is supported by religious leaders from all faiths, and he now has over 120 co-sponsors on this simple straightforward legislation that will finally give back to churches and other houses of worship what was unjustly taken from them 49 years ago: the freedom to speak however they feel led to speak, whether the issue is construed as politi- cal or not. Go to our site below to ask your Representative to support H.R. 235, the "Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act": http://www.conservativealerts.com/051903.htm NOTE: Please be sure to forward this to everyone you know that wants to see free speech rights apply to ALL Americans, in EVERY situation. (fwd) Date: 12 Jun 2003 13:20:53 -0700 (PDT) ----------------------- begin forwarded message from Fred --------------------- June 12 Neal Knox Update -- WOW!!! The Alaska Legislature passed -- and yesterday Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski signed -- a REAL Right To Carry law. If not disqualified from owning a gun, 90 days from now an Alaskan can drop one in her purse or tuck one under his jacket and go about their law-abiding business -- just like in Vermont. The new law does not eliminate the state's concealed handgun permit program -- which requires training, fees and the like. Nor does it change prohibitions against carrying firearms into courthouses, schoolyards, bars and domestic violence shelters. The governor's office told Associated Press that Alaskans could still apply for a permit in order to carry a concealed weapon in other states or to be exempt from background checks when purchasing firearms. The law's chief sponsor, Rep. Eric Croft, D-Anchorage, told AP he had gotten tired of continually making minor improvements to Alaska's gun laws. "I object to the government putting a precondition on that constitutional right (to carry a weapon). I'm presumed to be a responsible citizen until proven otherwise," Croft said. During yesterday's signing, Gov. Murkowski praised the legislature for passing the bill, and NRA for protecting Second Amendment rights. But NRA has never before -- to my knowledge -- pressed for a true Right To Carry law, and, on occasion, has threatened to politically downgrade legislators who supported Vermont-type laws in the states (as now U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave [R-Colo.] can attest). NRA has refused to back Vermont-style bills on the grounds that such an elimination of most concealed carry prohibitions cannot be passed. They say it's hard enough, sometimes impossible, to get a bill passed and signed even if it has extensive training, high fees, and broad restrictions on where the license is valid. That's usually true, but not always. One house in Alabama passed a Vermont-style carry law a few years back, but NRA State and Local didn't lift a finger to support it -- other than signing a letter after the bill had passed the Assembly. In some states -- as in Ohio -- concealed carry has long been stalled by strong opposition from law enforcement and the political establishment while our forces are divided between pro-gun groups willing to accept a "Texas-style" restrictive license and those determined to accept nothing less than a Vermont-style law. ILA argues internally that if a rural state with a friendly legislature and governor -- like Alaska -- passes a Vermont-style law, pro-gun forces in states with unfriendly legislatures and governors will be even further divided on what kind of law they'll work to pass. Amazingly, even with "another Vermont law" already a reality, NRA hasn't yet mentioned the new Alaska law. I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't even know the bill was in the works. The first I heard of it was a call last night from son Jeff, who had talked to ILA Liaison Brian Judy, who works out of the semi-independent Sacramento office. I verified it by reading this morning's Anchorage Daily News (http://www.adn.com/alaska/story/3280484p-3310005c.html). Jeff said Brian -- who is married to my former NRA secretary -- is "higher than a kite." I don't doubt it. And deservedly so. He and the Alaskans have raised the bar. Given the total lack of problems with concealed carry licensing laws -- whether or not they require any training, whether or not they have broad restrictions on carry, and whether or not they require big fees -- it's time to begin pushing for REAL Right To Carry. Like Vermont. Like Alaska's. And if the best we can do is something like Minnesota's new law -- which is a dandy, as licensing laws go -- then we should pass it. Then, like Alaska Rep. Eric Croft, use the non-problems with licensed citizens to press for the kind of right the Second Amendment was intended to protect. ----------------------- end forwarded message from Fred --------------------- -- RKBA! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: roc@xpresso.seaslug.org Subject: It Just Froze Over Date: 16 Jun 2003 12:36:23 -0700 (PDT) The Hatfield and McCoy families just got together in Kentucky, and declared an official end to America's most infamous feud. United States, delivered earlier today. Ruling in favor of a St. Louis dentist who resisted government attempts to force medicate him with antipsychotic drugs, the Court held that while involuntary medication solely for trial competence purposes may be appropriate in some instances, those instances would likely be "rare." Charged with Medicaid fraud in 1997, Dr. Sell was found incompetent to stand trial because he suffered from paranoid delusions.=A0 Dr. Sell was determined not to pose a danger to himself or others.=A0 Although anti-psychotic drugs, which have a severe side effects including neurological damage in a large percentage of cases, and only suppress the symptoms of mental illness, the government claimed the authority to chemically compel Dr. Sell's mental competence by forcing medication on him. "By ruling in Dr. Sell's favor the Court has vindicated the fundamental right of every American to control his or her own thought processes," said Richard Glen Boire, Director of the Center for Cognitive Liberty & Ethics, a nonprofit law and policy center that filed an amicus brief on behalf of Dr. Sell. But the court stopped short of considering whether forced medication violated the First Amendment, as the CCLE had urged them to do.=A0 "They made a good ruling, but they missed a major opportunity to recognize that thought is, at least partly, rooted in brain chemistry and that giving the government broad powers to directly manipulate the brain chemistry of a non-violent citizen would go against our nation's most cherished values," said Boire. Hailed as a victory for mental health advocates, today's decision could have had implications that reached far beyond health care, but the Court failed to address several fundamental issues raised by the case. "Emerging neurotechnology from pharmaceuticals to brain scanners are making consciousness more accessible and manipulable than ever before," said Boire, "the court had a chance to update legal thinking about cognition in a way could have been very relevant now and in the coming decades," said Boire. At minimum, the four-part test announced by the court will ensure that the lower courts considering forced medication orders ask why it should be medically appropriate to force drug an individual who is 1) not dangerous, and 2) competent to make up his own mind about treatment. ********************************************************************* Due to difficulties with our Web site, the CCLE has included the full press release for the US v. Anyone who tries to give YOU information on moral and political issues within 30 days of a primary, or within 60 days of a general election can be prosecuted! Religious and conservative leaders can't share information with you about the position of candidates on things like abortion or prayer in schools - but the liberal media can speak out freely. Amazingly, the practical effect of this law is that conservative candidates can be DRAGGED THROUGH THE MUD in the press and on the nightly news - and no one is free to speak out in their defense. It's OUTRAGEOUS! So WE RESPONDED STRONGLY IN COURT - and we weren't the only ones. Eleven different legal challenges have been mounted against this oppressive new law. The three-judge panel issued an astonishing 1,700-page opinion. YOUR FREEDOMS ARE STILL AT RISK - THE CASE IS HEADED FOR MANDATORY REVIEW BY THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES. We are working on a much shortened timeframe: * Our first brief is due July 8. * The Justices are coming back for a special session to hear the case on September 8. This means we will have to research, prepare, file our briefs and prepare for oral arguments WITHIN WEEKS. This is an incredibly tight schedule for such an overwhelming task. But we must not fail on this. In all my years of fighting for freedom and liberty, this is one of the most SEVERE VIOLATIONS of your constitutional rights. The expedited Supreme Court hearing represents our BEST CHANCE to see this law overturned. We must fight. We must be victorious - for the sake of your children and grandchildren ... for the sake of our country. We will fight - - but WE NEED YOUR HELP TO WIN. Please send your most generous gift today. http://www.aclj.net/ACLJ/donate.cfm?dn=1008&commid=64605442&id=860188 Your support today will make the difference. You will be helping us seize a tremendous opportunity to restore your lost freedoms - and protect your constitutional liberties for years to come. We need your help immediately. Thank you for standing with us for freedom and liberty. I hope to hear from you soon. http://www.aclj.net/ACLJ/donate.cfm?dn=1008&commid=64605442&id=860188 ____________________________________ As always, let us know of threats to freedom in your area by calling (757) 226-2489. Dems Have Not Dropped Gun Control Agenda Posted 6/20/2003 from FOXNews http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,90037,00.html "Has the gun control issue really disappeared? Some think that Democrats, chastised by the loss of the presidency of 2000 and the loss of the Senate in 2002, have learned the risk of supporting gun control the hard way. Some even argue that there is a more fundamental change in Demo- cratic beliefs on gun control. Yet, as Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi recently said, Democrats will wait and revisit the guns 'when the issue is ripe.' New regulations are still being put forward, but legislation gets more attention, both from the press and other legislators, when there is a chance it will pass. There is surely no shortage of new gun control proposals at either the federal or state level. Assault weapons ban. In Congress, House Democrats are pushing for a vastly expanded ban (including all semi-auto- matic shotguns that are widely used for hunting and skeet shooting) and, among other features, gives future U.S. Attorney Generals the ability to ban any semi-automatic rifle they classify as not for 'sporting' uses. Senate Democrats propose slightly expanding the ban only because they ack- nowledge that their most desired legislation would never get passed. Judicial appointments. Just last week Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor (search), a Republican, nominated by President Bush for a judgeship on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, was criticized by Senate Democrats for supporting a court decision that requires judges to hold a hearing before they can order a person's gun be taken away. -- Filibuster. Senate Democrats threaten to filibuster legislation designed to rein in abusive litigation targeting the firearms gun makers. The suits threaten the very existence of gun makers; law suits have already forced several gun manufacturers into bankruptcy, some before they even had their day in court. While moderate Democrats support the bill, most Democratic Senators appear willing to fight against this to the very end." -- New federal regulations. In June, Sen. Jon Corzine and Rep. Patrick Kennedy, both Democrats, put forward legislation giving the Department of Justice sweeping powers to regulate the design, manufacture and distribution of guns. Just at the end of May, Sen. Frank Lautenberg proposed banning large caliber guns and other new rules that regulate who can buy guns at gun shows. -- New state regulations. From gun storage laws in New York to taxing gun show transfers in Illinois to banning large caliber guns in California to fining parents whose children play with toy guns in Maryland, Democrat state officials across the country are pushing for more gun control laws. Even Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor and most pro-gun rights supporter among Democratic presidential candidates, wants to renew the so-called semi-automatic assault weapons ban as well as regulate gun shows. Surprisingly, the Bush administration has basically left most Clinton gun control policies in place. True, Attorney General John Ashcroft decided not to keep long-term records of gun sales and President Bush supports important legislation to curb abusive lawsuits. But the Bush administration has taken few other actions. Clinton administration policies have simply been allowed to continue on everything from existing policies banning the importation of guns to no longer requiring that ROTC military training involve how to fire a gun. Even when it comes to arming pilots (search), the administrat- ion has twice thwarted congressional legislation. Now over 21 months after Sept. 11, the administration has dragged its feet so that only 44 pilots out of over 100,000 pilots are allowed to carry guns on planes and there are no additional approvals in sight. In contrast, at the state level Republicans are slowly but stead- ily rolling back gun regulations. During the last couple of months, concealed handgun laws have been passed in Republican dominated legislatures in Alaska, Colorado, and Minnesota. In Missouri, final passage is uncertain and depends upon whether the Republican dominated legislature can override the Demo- cratic governors expected veto. The only exception to this Democrat/Republican divide was in New Mexico, which also passed a concealed handgun law this year (albeit an extremely restrictive one), and where Democrats completely control the state legislature and governorship. The lopsided coverage of the costs and benefits of guns in the media and the government ensures that the push for more regul- ations will not go away. In 2001, the three major networks - ABC, NBC, and CBS - devoted about 190,000 words worth of national television news stories on gun crimes but not one single story about someone using a gun to defend themselves or someone else. Even those who follow the news the closest are unlikely to know that when surveys of crimes committed with guns are compared with studies of defensive gun use, the best estimates indicate that people use guns defensively to stop crime 4.5 times more frequently than guns are used to commit crime. The only news network that carried any defensive gun stories that year was the Fox News Channel. Over the last decade it is simply impossible to find one study by either the U.S. Justice Department or the Treasury that measures the benefits from people owning guns. For example, every year the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms puts out a list of the top 10 guns used in crime, but why not one time put out a list of the top 10 guns used by people to stop crime? For congressional Democrats, the decision not to push new gun control as a top agenda item is simply because Republi- cans control both houses of congress. Their strong anti-gun sentiment has not abated. Just two more Democratic senators and 13 more Democratic House members and gun control legislation would go from fond dreams to reality. Yes/No/Not Sure Results | Disclaimer Police say three armed suspects walked into the Mr. Insurance building in Phoenix and demanded money. A fourth suspect was in the getaway car, according to the report. Investigators said after the suspects left with the store's money, the co-owner jumped into his Hummer and chased after the suspects. Police said that the man, identified only as Peter, followed the suspects through a neighborhood and eventually caught up with them. He then rolled his Hummer over their car. Two of the suspects were taken to the hospital in critical condition. The two other suspects managed to get away but police later caught them as well. It is not known if Peter will face charges. Ever wondered why, and how we can reverse that trend? Here's your answer. The powers of the Federal Government are "enumerated" -- that is, they are listed in the Constitution. All legal Federal powers must appear there. Anything that isn't listed in the Constitution as a lawful function of the Federal government is beyond the power of the Federal government. Most of the time, however, our federal government goes outside the bounds of their constitutional authority. At least one Congressman wants to change that. Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) has introduced HR 384, the "Enumerated Powers Act," which would do one simple thing: it would require that every new law cite exactly what part of the Constitution authorizes it. This measure will force a re-examination of the role of the national government and will fundamentally alter the ever growing reach of the federal government. For too long, the federal government has operated without constitutional restraint, only limiting itself by budgetary concerns. In doing so, it has created ineffective and costly programs, massive deficits year after year, and a national debt totaling more than $5 trillion. The Enumerated Powers Act will help slow the flood of unconstitutional legislation while assisting Congress in its re-examination of the proper role of government. As Rep. Shadegg said, "Our Founding Fathers believed the grant of specific rather than legislative powers to the national government would be one of the central mechanisms for protecting our freedoms while allowing us to achieve the objectives best accomplished through a national government. One of the most important things Congress can do is to honor and abide by the principles embodied in the Constitution -- no more, no less. Respecting the Tenth Amendment is the first way to ensure that the genius of the Constitution and its division of power between the national government, the states, and the people continues to guide our nation." ACTION ITEM: You would think that everyone would support something so basic, yet this bill has died at least four times previously, with fewer co-sponsors each time. Is Congress afraid that they won't be able to find any Constitutional authority for some of their laws? It's time to hold our elected Representatives accountable, and demand that they support this effort to force Congress, in every bill, to cite to the authority in the Constitution that gives them the power to enact the law.
