And with so many horrific news stories about gun c= rimes, it is hard to expect them to feel otherwise. True, guns make it easier fo= r bad things to happen, but they also make it easier for people to protect them= selves.=20 Yet, with the seeming avalanche of bad news, it's no wonder people f= ind it hard to believe that, according to some estimates, there are 2 million de= fensive gun uses each year and guns are used defensively four times more frequent= ly than they are to commit crimes.=20 The normal reaction is: If defensive uses were really happening, wou= ldn't we hear about them on the news? There is a good reason for their confusi= on. In 2001 (the last year available), ABC, CBS and NBC ran 190,000 words' worth= of gun-crime stories on their morning and evening national news broadcasts. = But they ran not a single story mentioning a private citizen using a gun to s= top a crime. The only network I could find that ran any defensive gun-use stor= ies was the Fox News Channel.=20 The print media were almost as lopsided: The New York Times ran 50,7= 45 words on gun crimes, but only one short (163-word) story on a retired pol= ice officer who used his gun to stop a robbery. For USA Today, the tally was= 5,660 words on gun crimes versus zero on defensive uses.=20 Part of the reason defensive gun use isn't covered may be simple new= s judgment. If a news editor faces two stories, one with a dead body on the= ground and another in which a woman brandished a gun and the attacker ran away, = no shots fired, almost anyone would pick the first story as more newsworthy.= It has been estimated that when people use guns defensively, 90 percent of the t= ime they stop the criminals simply by brandishing the gun.=20 Few people know that citizens using guns help stop about a third of potential public-school shootings before uniformed police can arrive. The= y don't know this because only about one percent of the media stories on these ca= ses mention it.=20 Take the widely covered attack last year at the Appalachian School o= f Law in Virginia. The attack was stopped by two students who got guns from the= ir cars. But only three news stories - out of 218 run in the week after the= attack - mentioned that the students actually used their guns to halt the attack= .=20 The unbalanced reporting is probably greatest in cases in which chil= dren die from accidental gunshots. Most people have seen the public-service ad= s with pictures or voices of children between the ages of four and eight, never = over the age of eight, and the impression is that there is an epidemic of acci= dental deaths involving children.=20 The truth is that in 1999, 31 children younger than 10 died from an accidental gunshot and only six of these cases appear to have involved an= other child under 10 as the culprit. Nor was this year unusual. Any death is tr= agic, but with 90-some million Americans owning guns and about 40 million child= ren younger than 10, it is hard to think of any other product in the home tha= t represents such a low risk to children. Indeed, more children under five = drowned in bathtubs or plastic water buckets.=20 Gun deaths are covered extensively as well as prominently, with indi= vidual cases getting up to 88 separate news stories. In contrast, when children = use guns to save lives, the event might at most get one brief mention in a sm= all local paper.=20 As a couple of reporters told me, journalists are uncomfortable prin= ting such positive gun stories because they worry that it will encourage child= ren to get access to guns. The whole process snowballs, however, because the exaggeration of the risks - along with lack of coverage of the benefits - cements the perceived risks more and more firmly in newspaper editors' an= d reporters' minds. This makes them ever more reluctant to publish such sto= ries.=20 Lack of balance dominates not just the media but also government rep= orts and polling. Studies by the Justice and Treasury Departments have long ev= aluated just the cost guns impose on society. Every year, Treasury puts out a re= port on the top 10 guns used in crime, and each report serves as the basis for do= zens of news stories. But why not also provide a report - at least once - on the = top 10 guns used defensively? Similarly, numerous government reports estimate th= e cost of injuries from guns, but none measures the number of injuries prevented= when guns are used defensively.=20 But if we really want to save lives, we need to address the whole tr= uth about guns - including the costs of not owning them. Letter to the Legion Dear Post 45, I caught wind of and read the recent news articles being circulated back there in the states. I figured I could clarify some things for you. As usual the news media has blown some things way out of proportion. The countryside is getting more safe by the day despite all the attacks you are hearing about. Imagine every shooting incident or robbery committed in LA or Portland being blown way out of proportion. This is a country where most of the Saddam Hussein thugs are being chased around like scared rabbits by Coalition forces. It is literally open season on them! We hunt them down like animals. There were about a million soldiers in the Iraqi army at the beginning of hostilities and most of them took off before we attacked. There are some that were very loyal to Saddam that are trying to sneak around and take pot shots at us. We are cleaning them up pretty fast. There are also thugs from other countries running around, like Iran and Syria. Well, the Iraqis hate these thugs as much as we do. So the Iraqi people are hunting them down too! I can honestly say 98% of the population of Iraq love us and they do not want us to leave...ever! They say as long as we are here they feel safe. What is going on with the countries infrastructure? Everything is going well! The railroad is running again! The railroad has not run since 1991. In the city of Hilllah, the power stays on 24 hours a day and it has more power than prior to the war. Some Iraqis are worried about getting too much food from the coalition because they don't have enough room in their homes to store it. The markets are open. The Seabees have rebuilt all of the schools and put in furniture and chalkboards. The kids used to sit on the floor! Now they have nice desks to sit at. Commerce is running. New money is being printed. The Iraqi Dinar has stabilized and is now increasing in value. Most of the Iraqi men want to buy Chevy pickups (I told them a Dodge Ram with a Cummins Diesel is better Ha Ha). They pretty much want any vehicle made by General Motors. The highways and bridges are being repaired. In the Universities, the girls have tossed their deshakas (long black dresses with head and face coverings) and are now wearing western style clothes and even some are wearing short sleeves. The favorite drink is Pepsi, followed by Coke. They want us to bring them any and everything American. Any item made in America or that is from America is worth money over here. The newspapers and television paint a picture of doom and gloom and that we are having major problems over here. That is just not the case. The Iraqis have a saying about the situation over here "Every day is better than the day before". Life is flowing back in to this country and it is fun to watch and I am so glad I got to watch it happen. Some days watching the Iraqi people is like watching the faces of little kids on Christmas Day! Many of them are walking around in a daze wondering what to do with their freedom. They are starting businesses everywhere. They want to build shopping malls and factories, they want McDonalds and Jack in the Box and Pizza Hut. Of course anything American Fast Food, because of the stories the troops are telling them. We give them our old newspapers and magazines that you have been sending us and they are absolutely flabbergasted when they read them! They want us to keep bringing them. They read every single page even the advertisements over and over! This would be a good time for media to get their magazines going over here because the Iraqis just love them. So as a general rule when pro gun folks send me emails about sellouts etc I kind of tune it out as part of the immense background noise in our movement (and it -all- seems to be us throwing bricks at ourselves). 2) This is about a defamation suit, but we don't seen any facts in either of the ROC messages about that allegation of defamation. Specifically mentioning Egypt as a targe= t for sanctions, Barney Frank, Democrat of Massachusetts, made the announcement during a meeting of homosexuals at UN headquarters in New York on Monday. Buoyed by a =93growing level of success at the UN=94 and a seemingly decisive international cultural shift, gay rights advocates met to discus= s a multi-pronged strategy, including attacks on traditional morality and Christianity, that they believe will advance the complete gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender agenda. Everyone should hear what the judge had to say. Ruling by Judge William Young U.S. District Court Judge William Young made the following statement in sentencing "shoe bomber" Richard Reid to prison. It is noteworthy, and deserves to be remembered far longer than he predicts. I commend it to you and to anyone you might wish to forward it to. January 30, 2003 United States vs. Reid. Judge Young: Mr. Richard C. Reid, hearken now to the sentence the Court imposes upon you. On counts 1, 5 and 6 the Court sentences you to life in prison in the custody of the United States Attorney General. On counts 2, 3, 4 and 7, the Court sentences you to 20 years in prison on each count, the sentence on each count to run consecutive with the other. That's 80 years. On count 8 the Court sentences you to the mandatory 30 years consecutive to the 80 years just imposed. The Court imposes upon you each of the eight counts a fine of $250,000 for the aggregate fine of $2 million. The Court accepts the government's recommendation with respect to restitution and orders restitution in the amount of $298.17 to Andre Bousquet and $5,784 to American Airlines. The Court imposes upon you the $800 special assessment. The Court imposes upon you five years supervised release simply because the law requires it. But the life sentences are real life sentences so I need go no further. This is the sentence that is provided for by our statutes. It is a fair and just sentence. It is a righteous sentence. Let me explain this to you. We are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before. There is all too much war talk here. And I say that to everyone with the utmost respect. Here in this court, where we deal with individuals as individuals, and care for individuals as individuals, as human beings we reach out for justice, you are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. To give you that reference, to call you a soldier gives you far too much stature. Whether it is the officers of government who do it or your attorney who does it, or that happens to be your view, you are a terrorist. And we do not negotiate with terrorists. We do not treat with terrorists. We do not sign documents with terrorists. We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice. So war talk is way out of line in this court. You are a big fellow. But you are not that big. You're no warrior. I know warriors. You are a terrorist. A species of criminal guilty of multiple attempted murders. In a very real sense Trooper Santigo had it right when you first were taken off that plane and into custody and you wondered where the press and where the TV crews were and he said you're no big deal. You're no big deal. What your counsel, what your able counsel and what the equally able United States attorneys have grappled with and what I have as honestly as I know how tried to grapple with, is why you did something so horrific. What was it that led you here to this courtroom today? I have listened respectfully to what you have to say. And I ask you to search your heart and ask yourself what sort of unfathomable hate led you to do what you are guilty and admit you are guilty of doing. And I have an answer for you. It may not satisfy you. But as I search this entire record it comes as close to understanding as I know. It seems to me you hate the one thing that is most precious. You hate our freedom. Our individual freedom. Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not believe as we individually choose. Here, in this society, the very winds carry freedom. They carry it everywhere from sea to shining sea. It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you are here in this beautiful courtroom. So that everyone can see, truly see that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely. It is for freedom's sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on your behalf and have filed appeals, will go on in their, their representation of you before other judges. We are about it. Because we all know that the way we treat you, Mr. Reid, is the measure of our own liberties. Make no mistake though. It is yet true that we will bear any burden, pay any price, to preserve our freedoms. Look around this courtroom. Mark it well. The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here. Day after tomorrow it will be forgotten. But this, however, will long endure. Here in this courtroom and courtrooms all across America, the American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice, justice, not war, individual justice is in fact being done. The very President of the United States through his officers will have to come into courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged, and juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence democratically, to mold and shape and refine our sense of justice. See that flag, Mr. Reid? That's the flag of the United States of America. That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten. That flag stands for freedom. You know it always will. For instance, the paper establishes that UNICEF has endorsed, even helpe= d to write, numerous documents that call for increased access to abortion, as well as for the legalization of abortion. It was also discovered that UNICEF has funded programs that may have included abortion services. UNICEF funded a program run by the Population Council, the group that holds the US patent for the abortion pill RU-486. Goals of the program included =93improving=85reproductive health services=94 and =93managing u= nwanted pregnancies.=94 Both of these phrases are commonly used by international pro-abortion advocates as euphemisms for abortion. But what many are NOT discussing is the fact that, as things stand now, the President won't stand a chance of actually getting ANY Supreme Court nominee through the radical Left's Senate gauntlet. That's because (1) the liberal Senators have so far successfully implemented filibusters against several of President Bush's lower court nominees and haven't been stopped, and (2) the leaders of these Senate liberals are now even boldly demanding that President Bush nominate ONLY the people THEY suggest to him! Do you get it? As things stand right now, there is NO WAY our President could get a new conservative Supreme Court justice approved. Under current Senate filibuster rules, obstructionist Democrats can continue to block his nominees. Well, now we have a chance to change all that. Senate Republican leaders are considering a bold, new approach to get the President's judicial nominees confirmed. Pundits are calling it one of the "nuclear options" for the nominating process. Recently, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) introduced a resolution amending Rule 22, which governs the filibuster. Sen. Frist's resolution seeks to gradually lower the threshold required to break a filibuster on executive nominations, starting at the current 3/5th supermajority of 60 votes on the first cloture motion, then 57 votes on the second, 54 votes on the third, and finally just 51 votes on the fourth cloture motion to end debate and force a vote on confirmation. If this change had been in effect at the beginning of the year, Miguel Estrada would have been confirmed in March, when a third cloture motion received 55 votes. As it currently stands, we've now lost at least six cloture vote on Estrada as well as at least two vote on Priscilla Owen. As noted by Gary Bauer (cwfpac.org), "this is a bold step for Senator Frist and the GOP leadership. Senate Democrats will no doubt scream and holler about how Republicans are trashing the 'rights of the minority,' and Robert Byrd will pontificate endlessly about the prestige and traditions of the Senate being torn asunder." Sen. Frist deserves tremendous credit for advancing this proposal. There is no way -- after committee hearings and four subsequent cloture votes and all the debate in between -- that anyone can claim a nominee had not been sufficiently debated. This is a balanced approach that preserves the traditions of the Senate, while protecting the right of the President to make appointments and the obligation of the majority to govern. Ironically, Frist's rules change is modeled after a plan originally proposed by leading Senate liberals, Tom Harkin of Iowa and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut! The difference is that Frist's plan only applies to executive appointments, whereas the Harkin/Lieberman proposal was sweeping and would have also applied to regular legislation. Nine currently serving Senate Democrats supported the Harkin/Lieberman change to the filibuster. They, as well as all of their colleagues, need to be overwhelmingly encouraged to support Frist's more narrowly crafted measure. And that's where YOU come in. Together, we can make a difference NOW in the nomination process, to ensure easier approval of Pres. Bush's upcoming Supreme Court nominations.
