A woman was recently sentenced to life in prison because her baby died as a result of her use of illegal methamphetamine while pregnant. The baby died after birth, and the cause was initially thought to be Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The autopsy determined the actual cause. The United States Supreme Court chose not to hear her case, and so it stands. Had the woman opted to kill her baby prior to birth in a late term abortion, even by just two weeks prior to term, she'd be a free woman today. Think about it. Privacy, ya know. Scott Peterson is charged with the murder of his wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Connor. Had Laci Peterson "chosen" to end Connor's life at the exact same time with a "legal" late term abortion, we'd have never heard about it. Privacy, ya know. The San Francisco Chronicle just reported that three lawsuits have been filed in advance of President Bush's signing of a bill to ban late term abortions. Bush hasn't even signed the bill into law yet, and they are already filing lawsuits to keep the killing "legal". I can't tell you how many people, particularly women, have been visibly shaken and appalled, after I described what a late term abortion is, and I must conclude that in most cases, it is because the major news media has kept it hidden from them. This is a late term abortion: The abortionist induces labor, then reaches inside the womb and turns the baby around to come out legs first. This is done to make the procedure "legal", because until the head comes out, the baby isn't "legally" born yet. With the head of the healthy, squirming baby still just inside the womb, the doctor drives a shiv into the base of the baby's neck, right up into the brain cavity, where the good doctor scrambles the baby's brain until all signs of life cease - you know, like when the baby's legs and arms stop moving. Once the baby is deemed dead, the head is pulled the rest of the way out from the womb, and disposed of. That is what a late term abortion is. It's all nice and legal. How do you feel about that? In most cases, these second and third trimester "choices" are made for no better reason than the personal convenience of the woman. In the vast majority of these elected infanticides, there is no health threat to the woman whatsoever. Now, if that's not the cold-blooded murder of a viable human baby, I don't know what else is. They once hanged women for killing their unborn babies. Today, it's a choice, the next day, a woman goes to prison for life, and Scott Peterson faces the death penalty for it. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Planned Parenthood wants to keep it a choice - but only if it's a choice exclusive to the mommy. The current legal definition rests exclusively with the intent of the mother. Laci Peterson intended Connor to be born alive, and when her wishes were thwarted, accused husband, Scott Peterson, now faces the death penalty. The woman who gave birth to a baby infused with methamphetamine intended to give her baby life, therefore her illegal acts that resulted in her baby's unintended death are deemed worthy of a life sentence. She should have elected to "legally" kill the brat when she had the chance! The whole fabric of our society has become unraveled, because we now hold no principle of right and wrong as virtuous. There is no black & white, right or wrong anymore, only "shades of gray", and when society's moral backbone deteriorates down that road, everything is acceptable . except intolerance. Tolerance is the last remaining "virtue" of a morally baseless society. The amoral among us scream for "tolerance", demanding the rest of us accept them for what they are. If you don't "tolerate" them, you are branded a bigot and an "extremist". Where late term abortion is concerned, the whole debate has gone bonkers. Carl F. In its upcoming Supreme Court case, the University of Michigan Law School justifies its very substantial prefer- ences for selected racial and ethnic minorities on the ground that a "critical mass" of African-American and Hispa- nic students is needed to assure that all students have the benefit of a variety of views and experiences. But profes- sors even more than students set the intellectual tone in university life. Generating ideas is their job. These same law schools almost uniformly lack a "critical mass" of conservatives to offer an alternative to the reigning liber- al orthodoxy. We have conducted a study that provides evidence of the ideological imbalance at elite law schools -- of which we have heard no plans to rectify. We reviewed all federal campaign contributions over $200 by professors at the top 22 law schools from 1994 to 2000. During that time, close to a quarter of these law professors contributed to campaigns -- a proportion far greater than the average citizen. The proof is stark: as the Anglican church was once described as the Tory Party at prayer, the legal academy today is best seen as the Democratic Party at the lectern. America splits evenly between the GOP and Democrats, but 74% of the profes- sors contribute primarily to Democrats. Only 16% do so to Republicans. These overall percentages substantially understate the effect of the partisan imbalance at most schools. Republi- can-contributing law professors are very disproportionately concentrated at two schools -- the University of Virginia and Northwestern. In contrast, many other elite schools have few or no politically active Republicans. At Yale, where almost 50% of the faculty donate, almost 95% give predomi- nantly to Democrats. At Michigan itself the ratio is eight to one. Sometimes the amounts donated can be instructive: in the last six years Georgetown law professors have donated approximately $180,000 to the Democratic Party, $2,000 to the GOP and $1,500 to the Green party. Conclusion? Main- stream conservative ideas are no better represented than those on the leftist fringe. The overall ratio also understates the skewed debate on issues of public concern: our study finds that professors teaching economics-based subjects like antitrust and corpo- rations are more conservative than their public-law counter- parts. This leaves such subjects as constitutional law and international law -- the subjects that set the agenda for debate on the hot-button issues of our time -- with scarcely a conservative voice. The Constitution properly disfavors government clas- sification by race. When the government argues that it has a compelling reason to overcome the strong presumption of racial neutrality, the courts assess the sincerity of the reason by testing whether its policies fit with its justifi- cation. When law schools make no progress (and no discern- ible effort) in correcting the patent absence of diversity in viewpoints, it is fair to assume that their true goal is racial patterning, not educational diversity. * * * The race-based "diversity" rationale is even more disturbing for what it shows us about the modern university. In light of its educational mission, a university has a particular obligation to logical argumentation, and a duty to reject subterfuge. For instance, universities might argue that preferenc- es are needed to make up for egregious past discrimination. That provides a principled rationale for extending prefer- ences to African-Americans and Native Americans while not taking effective action to remedy the gross viewpoint dis- parities on faculties. In the event the Supreme Court re- jects that rationale, private universities could encourage Congress to allow them to engage in race-based affirmative action on the grounds that private institutions should enjoy freedom to admit whom they choose. Senator Chuck Schumer of New Yo= rk criticized Justice Brown for voting against ''minorities'' and ''low-inco= me'' people. Schumer makes no mention of specific cases where Brown ruled agai= nst "minorities" and ''low-income'' people who actually deserved to win. He j= ust oh so casually insinuates racism. In effect, Schumer is criticizing Brown= for treating the constitution as colorblind (wasn't this one of the major goa= ls of the civil rights movement?). Now a handful of racist, Democrats in the Senate-and the black leaders th= ey drag in tow-are joining in on the race baiting. Just like that, all of Judge Brown's hard work-she rose up from a segrega= ted Alabama community to achieve personal and professional success -- dissolv= e beneath the hurtful and reductive label of "Uncle Tom." This is no differ= ent than using the "N-word" to sum up an individual. This is the approach the Democrats take every time a conservative minorit= y is nominated for a position of prominence. This is what I call, "new racism.= " It's about systematically preventing conservative blacks and Hispanics from achieving positions of prominence in this country. It's about summing up complex human beings by the color of their skin. And it sends the damagin= g message that because we share the same skin color, we all need to think, = act and vote the same way. American Blacks and Hispanics are complex human beings. Smith" Assaulting the Ban by John R. Lott, Jr. With the first sniper trial of John Muhammad getting started, the one-yea= r anniversary recalls the horrors and fear. There are also legislative atte= mpts underway to ensure that it never happens again. Two Democratic presidenti= al candidates Congressmen Richard Gephardt (D-MO) and Dennis Kucinich (D-OH)= have used the anniversary to introduce legislation demanding that the federal assault weapons ban be renewed and expanded before it expires next year. Lawmakers in Maryland are now requesting that over 40 different guns be a= dded to the list of banned assault weapons. Legislators in other states are following suit. In the gun control debate, labels are often misleading: The "assault weap= on ban" is no different, conjuring up images of machine guns, a view encoura= ged by the news media, which typically show machine guns in their stories on the= ban. Yet, the 1994 federal assault weapon ban had nothing to do with machine g= uns, only semi-automatics that fire one bullet per pull of the trigger. Rebuil= ding semi-automatic weapons into machine guns is very difficult, as completely different firing mechanisms are used. It is easier to replace the entire gun than to re-engineer a semi-automat= ic gun. Functionally the banned guns are the same as other non-banned semi-automa= tic guns, firing the exact same bullets with the same rapidity and producing = the exact same damage. The ban arbitrarily outlaws some guns based upon their= name or cosmetic features, such as whether the gun could have a bayonet attached. The media's focus now is on the so-called sniper rifle. Yet, the 223-cali= ber Bushmaster rifle used in the sniper killings was neither a sniper rifle n= or an "assault weapon." In fact, it is such a low powered rifle that in most states it is illegal to use it for even deer hunting precisely because of its low power, too frequently wounding and not killi= ng deer. Why anyone would think that assault weapon bans would reduce crime is a mystery. In theory, if so-called "assault weapons" are preferred by crimi= nals to commit crime but are seldom used by citizens to stop crime, banning th= e whole class could reduce crime. But since most guns are semi-automatic, s= uch a ban would cover most guns. However, banning a few semi-automatic guns mig= ht very well only change the brand of gun that criminals use. The law never had much of an effect. Despite simultaneously praising the = ban as being responsible for the drop in violent crime during the 1990s, President Clinton, who signed the "assault weapon ban" into law, complain= ed in 1998 how easy it had been for gun manufacturers to continue selling the b= anned guns simply by changing the guns' names or by making the necessary cosmet= ic changes. Ironically, the banned guns were seldom used in crime to begin with. A 19= 95 study of the early 1990s by the Clinton administration showed that fewer = than 1% of state and federal inmates carried a "military-type" semi-automatic guns (a much broader set of guns than those banned by the = law) when they committed a crime. A 1997 survey showed no reduction in this ty= pe of crime gun after the ban. Only two studies have been conducted of the federal law's impact on crime= , one of which also examined the state assault weapons laws. One study was fund= ed by the Clinton administration and examined just the first year the law was in effect. It concluded that, "the ban's short-ter= m impact on gun violence has been uncertain." The second study is found in my book The Bias Against Guns. It examines t= he first four years of the federal law as well as the different state assaul= t weapon bans. Even after accounting for law enforcement, demographics, poverty and other factors that affect crime, the laws did n= ot reduce any type of violent crime. In fact, overall violent crime actually= rose slightly by 1.5 percent, but the impact was not statistically significant. The somewhat larger increase in murder rates w= as significant. The data from the five states with assault weapons bans show no overall benefit, with seemingly random results: violent crime rose in California = and Hawaii, remained unchanged in Massachusetts, and fell Maryland and New Je= rsey. The only clear result of the bans was to consistently reduce the number o= f gun shows by about 25 percent. Features such as bayonets mounts on guns may n= ot mean much to criminals, but gun collectors sure seem to like them. The purpose of limiting a law to a set period is presumably to test it, t= o see if it lives up to its promises. The bans have now been in effect for almo= st a decade, without any evidence of any benefits. Fueled by false images of machine guns and sniper rifles, the debate next= year is likely to be very emotional. Let's hope that we will look at what thes= e laws actually do. Perhaps most of you would respond with, "No, Jim, thankfulness is not key to survival," and I would tend to agree with you. We as a country and as a world have so much to be thankful for. Always start with thanksgiving; be thankful for what you already have and see the miracles that come from this one simple act. That is called fruitfulness and abundance. Here's what I think fruitfulness and abundance mean - to go to work on producing more than you need for yourself so you can begin blessing others, blessing your nation and blessing your enterprise. But to begin this incredible process of blessing, it often starts with the act of thanksgiving and gratitude, being thankful for what you already have and for what you've already done.
