Ponder http://www.friendsofliberty.com/files/2001/07/09/01.htm Friends of Liberty, International I guess you've got the emails, too. Seems like everyone has "received word" in some form or another as to the controversiality regarding whether Bush is or isn't our "elected" president. And, even though Bush was my choice of the "lesser of two evils", the subject of corruption in the voting booth deserves attention. First it was the Butterfly ballots that caused all the commotion. For some reason, those old women who could mark a B-17 on those Florida Bingo Cards in less than 2 seconds just couldn't seem to figure out which square to fill in for their candidates. Some of the Ballots got bent, and some of the voters didn't follow directions and fill in that circle all the way. It has always been my practice that, if I want something done, to do it. And, if something is broke, to fix it. So, the first step, then would be to define the problem. The problem, in this case, was the unease of use of the voting tools available. In fixing this problem, we have to consider that there are other problems that we do not wish to create in the name of fixing this one problem, otherwise, the politicians will just legislate more laws that make it impossible to use your voting privileges wisely. After all, look what they did recently when they realized that their people were facing a great danger, not being able to get elected! Campaign Finance Reform is a trojan horse. The voting scandal in Florida led to hours, if not weeks, of counting ballots by hand. This, of course, was the only sure way to tell who had been elected. Of course, those who did the counting didn't much like it. And, our Representatives didn't much like it either. They had to wait for an answer. It's okay to make us wait for them, but God help us if we make them wait for anything! So, it stands to reason that now, we need a ballot that is not only easy to read, but easy to count. And, of course, there are civil rights that were alleged to have been violated at the polls. Unfortunately, there isn't a ballot you can make that will guard against that...unless of course you wish to change the law so that all illegal immigrants and convicted felons can vote. But, we got to try to make one anyway, just so that we can say that we are "working on the problem." The only solution that anyone has been able to come up with is computerized touch-screens. In walks the voting technology companies. A good example is Election Systems & Software, Inc. (ES&S) "As ES&S supports modernizing Florida's voting environment in the months ahead, our partnership with Florida-based MTS enables ES&S to responsively support our new touch-screen voting and optical scan clients," stated Mike Limas, ES&S chief operating officer. "MTS has a tremendous reputation throughout the state of Florida for delivering the highest level of service to election systems clients." Computerized Touch Screen voting. One of the problems I have with the "Powers that be" is that usually, when they attempt to solve a problem, they create more in the process. This is due to simply not thinking ahead. So, let's look at a few of the problems that will need to be addressed now that many states have settled on computerized touch-screens as a solution. #1: How many times have you wanted to throw your computer out the window because it wouldn't work right? #2: How many times has your bank notified you due to a computer error causing an overdraft in your account? (this has happened to me twice, btw). #3: How many times have you been notified by the main media that some government site has been hacked? (Remember, this is a government site, therefore this site had excessive security measures to insure that it wouldn't be hacked, but it was anyway). #4. How many times have you clicked a button once, only to backspace because you accidently clicked it twice? (Oh, that's right, this is "touch-screen", right?) #5. You use a touch-screen on most bank-cards when withdrawing money at an ATM machine. How many times have you made a mistake because the screen was either too touchy or not touchy enough? Or, because of a computer malfunction? And lastly, when guarding against vote fraud, #6 How easy is it for a hacker to change the number of the count on the computer? When voting for the most important office of the United States, don't you think these questions need to be addressed seriously? Unfortunately, many of the states have taken the stance that none of this matters, so long as they are showing an effort in solving the original problems to begin with. Isn't it about time that We the People started demanding an insight into these scenarios? ======= Don't forget to check out our messageboard at http://www.friendsofliberty.com/messageboard/intro.htm Want to submit your article or news? http://www.friendsofliberty.com/submit/arsubmit.htm Got an editorial you'd like to see posted? http://www.friendsofliberty.com/submit/oesubmit.htm Want to make a complaint about a product or service at fli? http://www.friendsofliberty.com/submit/complain.htm Want to submit your press release? http://www.friendsofliberty.com/submit/prsubmit.htm Need to gripe or inquire at the FLI webmasters? http://www.friendsofliberty.com/submit/webmaster.htm Cut out the middlemen. We may never know Finally an explanation for the incessant coverage, every hour on the hour for a long time each time, of the medical condition of that boy whose arm a shark bit off near Pensacola. No URL provided as I received this. Scott Chomsky's proof By William Rivers Pitt The United States is unusual among the industrial democracies in the rigidity of the system of ideological control?'indoctrination,' we might say?exercised through the mass media. ?Noam Chomsky June 25, 2001?In the early morning hours of Thursday, June 22, 2001, a man named Jared T. Bozydaj took to the streets of New Paltz, New York, with an Intrac Arms 7.62 semi-automatic assault rifle. He fired pointedly at police officers, wounding one officer named Jeffery Quiepo in the arm. The shooting went on for several hours before Bozydaj was disarmed and arrested. Bozydaj was described as being highly upset by the execution of Timothy McVeigh. He apparently had decided to take revenge in McVeigh's name on the police, whom Bozydaj referred to as "control mechanisms for the government." Weapons and literature in his apartment indicated that Bozydaj had been planning this attack for some time. New Paltz is a small community near the Hudson River about an hour north of New York City. The downtown district is filled with small stores, as well as a number of bars that cater to the students of the State University of New York (SUNY) New Paltz, the campus of which is only a few blocks away from where this shooting occurred. The best word to describe the place is 'quaint.' My girlfriend was born and raised near this town. I have spent many drunken hours with her in the bars that now bear the bullet holes from Bozydaj's rampage. My girlfriend's parents report that much of downtown New Paltz is roped off with yellow police tape today. One can see quite clearly the damage done by Bozydaj's assault rifle, and the police believe it is a miracle that no one was killed. One SUNY student reported that eight bullets passed through her bedroom wall, and said that she would have been shot in the head if her radiator had not deflected the rounds. I discovered this story on the forums of DemocraticUnderground.com, where someone had posted it as a topic for discussion about McVeigh-oriented violence. I forwarded the link, a story from the Zwire news service, to my girlfriend, for obvious reasons. She called her parents and got the story from the ground. The local New Paltz paper, the Times-Herald Record, covered the shooting in detail, and she sent me the link to their story. The next day, my girlfriend called me. "I haven't seen this story in any of the newspapers," she said. "It wasn't on CNN or Peter Jennings last night. Why do you think they aren't reporting this? Some guy shot up my town, and shot a cop. That's news, isn't it?" I am a news junkie, and had myself noticed that this interesting and disturbing story had not appeared anywhere in the national news media. Using the words "New Paltz" and "Bozydaj," I searched The New York Times, an obvious place for this story to appear, and came up empty. I did the same at CNN.com, The Washington Post, ABCNews.com and several other news outlets, and found nothing. A man, motivated by the execution of Timothy McVeigh, had gone on an hours-long shooting rampage directed exclusively at cops in a small New York town with a sophisticated assault rifle. He blew a hole in a cop, and shot hell out of every storefront in the vicinity. He nearly put a bullet through the head of a sleeping college student. Somehow, this was not deemed newsworthy by virtually every major news outlet in America, including the Times of New York, the state where this shooting took place. Why? An immediate explanation is that the editors of these news sources were acting out of a sense of responsibility. For most Americans, the name Timothy McVeigh is synonymous with pure evil. It is likely that a decision was reached among the purveyors of our information that nothing should be published or broadcast that will give ear to those who consider McVeigh a martyred hero. The fear, I suppose, is that if enough of these kinds of stories get out, some of our militia-oriented citizenry will think the Revolution is finally at hand, and take to the streets of their own small burgs with rifles at the ready. This kind of quiet censorship, however, raises some disturbing questions. If unreported McVeigh-motivated shootings like this are happening in New Paltz, where I am lucky enough to have eyes on the ground, where else are they happening, and going unreported? I have no friends in Akron, Butte, Silver Springs, Kissimmee, El Paso, or Needles. Where else in America is violence like this breaking loose? Why are we not being told of it? What else is being withheld? Noted linguist Noam Chomsky has observed many times that the national media is not the information-disbursing entity created by our love for the First Amendment of the Constitution. Rather, the national media is the propaganda wing of the status quo. The national media tells us things in a certain way to keep our eyes on the ground, and to keep us from questioning power too closely. When no other avenue is available to control the masses, the national media simply refuses to inform us at all. We have seen this phenomenon many times in many places. How many of us truly know the level of poverty that exists in America? How many of us know the toll our sanctions in Iraq have taken on the civilian populace of that country? How many of us know the number of dead that were left at the hands of CIA-trained and armed murderers in Nicaragua during the Reagan administration? How many of us truly know the extent to which corporations run the government of this country? Were we told all the facts in unpolished newspaper prose, a howl of outrage the likes of which has never before been heard would rise from the throat of the American populace. This, more than anything, is the reason we are left in our uninformed state of bliss. Were we to be truly informed by the media outlets, so much would change so fast, and so many of those who hold the power and the purse strings would be run out of town on a rail, that the very nature of power in this country would be shattered forever. Those who sup on the teat of the status quo want nothing to do with this. Ergo, we are left in the dark. Such a condition is beyond the concepts of Left or Right. Political affiliation is mere window-dressing in the high apartments of true power in America. One need only look at the corporate connections of Gore and Bush, our last two presidential challengers, to know that party politics doesn't matter a damn at the end of the day. Everything boils down to the central question: who rules? Not us, friends. Not when we are kept safe and uninformed. It is better this way, when the tree-shakers are kept out of the loop. The fact that Mr. Bozydaj's shooting rampage went completely unreported by the national news media, an entity entrusted with informing this vast nation about the truths that happen within its borders, should shake your confidence in what we are told to its foundations. I don't care for Mr. Bozydaj's views, and I despise anyone who would attack police officers with an assault rifle. But, simply put, he happened. We deserve to know. If the news media can report on a consensual relationship between adults for two years, they can report on Mr. Bozydaj. If the news media can report on every school shooting, despite the real danger of inciting copycat outrages, they can report on Mr. Bozydaj. And if they can report the actions of Mr. Bozydaj, they can certainly report other stories, as well. We deserve to know who runs this country. We deserve to know where we are at war, and who is dying. We deserve to know where we have been at war, and whom we killed. We deserve to know who is starving in our country, and why. We deserve to know what happened in Florida. We deserve to know many things we are never told of, or are lied to about. When we are not told, we are deprived of the right and ability to determine the course of this country, as is our purpose as citizens. We all know the dangers of making uninformed decisions, having done so to our woe many times in our daily lives. How many decisions have we made in the name of this nation without all the relevant facts in hand? How many more such decisions will we make? Too often, others do our thinking for us. The story of Mr. Bozydaj is just one example of this phenomenon. If you love this country, fear in your soul what other areas in the life of our country you are not allowed to participate in, simply because someone else decided you didn't need to know. - - - ---------- End Forwarded Message ---------- Pengar Enterprises, Inc. and Shire.Net LLC Web and Macintosh Consulting -- full service web hosting Chad Leigh chad@pengar.com chad@shire.net - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2001 15:14:11 -0700 From: Bill Vance Subject: City-Living Linked To Increased Psychotic Symptoms (fwd) Now this makes some sense. Remember the red-blue maps..... From: Ambrovista@aol.com Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2001 10:54:47 EDT Subject: City-Living Linked To Increased Psychotic Symptoms City-Living Linked To Increased Psychotic Symptoms 7-13-1 NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Urban dwelling has never been known for its soothing effects, but new research suggests that people living in large cities are more likely than small-town residents to exhibit psychotic-like symptoms such as paranoia and delusions. In a study of more than 7,000 people in the Netherlands, investigators found that both full-blown psychotic disorders and milder psychosis-like symptoms were more common among those living in urbanized areas. The link was most apparent among people born and raised in densely populated areas, suggesting that childhood environment may create ``enduring liabilities'' for adult psychiatric health, according to the researchers. Dr. Jim van Os of Maastricht University and colleagues report the findings in the July issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry. The researchers divided the study participants into groups living in one of five levels of urbanization, which were based on population density. Through interviews, van Os and his colleagues determined that the prevalence of psychiatric symptoms increased along with participants' level of urbanization. In the overall population, the prevalence of any type of psychotic symptoms over a lifetime was about 4% to 17%, depending on the definition of symptoms. The investigators looked at the number and severity of symptoms such as feelings of persecution or auditory hallucinations. Only about 1% suffered mental illnesses such as major depression, and even fewer had been affected by schizophrenia-like disorders. The fact that such symptoms were more common in urban settings could be partly explained by symptomatic individuals having ``drifted'' to these areas, the authors note. However, they add, their previous research has shown population stability in cities--that is, around 75% of city dwellers were born there. And a number of studies have demonstrated that psychotic illness is more prevalent in urban settings than in rural areas, the report indicates. ``The high rates of psychotic illness in urban environments may be the result of the influence of environmental factors,'' van Os and colleagues write. ``As the urban effect appears to have its impact during urban upbringing rather than during adult residence per se, developmental mechanisms ought to be considered.'' The fact that in this study, psychosis-like symptoms as well as full-blown illnesses were more common in cities suggests a greater ``psychosis proneness'' in urban settings, they add. Why this potential connection exists is unclear, but the researchers note that deprivation and social isolation in childhood neighborhoods have been shown to affect mental health. Another recent study in Denmark linked urban birth with an increased of developing schizophrenia. While family history was a far greater predictor of the risk, place of birth emerged as an environmental factor. Those researchers speculated that people born in urban areas are exposed to more infections during prenatal development and childhood. Some experts believe early exposure to infections may affect the developing brain in a way that makes it more vulnerable to schizophrenia. Victory came from a surprising corner of the House... from the supporters of the bill itself! Nineteen Republicans joined 209 disgruntled Democrats who could not agree on the rules for debating the anti-gun legislation. The supporters couldn't agree on the rules because they couldn't agree on the specifics in the bill. According to the Associated Press this morning, the Republican leadership crafted a rule for debate that would force "separate votes on killing a dozen late-hour changes" that the sponsors of the bill wanted to incorporate. The sponsors had asked that the package of changes be considered as a whole. Democrats were furious with the terms of debate, so they voted to sink their own bill. But there's even more good news. As stated by Salon magazine yesterday, the math on this bill shows the anti-freedom forces have been losing a war of attrition over the years: "On the other side of the aisle, 54 Republicans supported the bill in 1999, and 61 in 1998." But yesterday, only 19 Republicans supported the Incumbent Protection Bill, a total decrease of almost 70 percent in three years. "This victory should encourage gun owners," said GOA Executive Director Larry Pratt. "Your activism is important. It does make a difference, and our rights would be in greater jeopardy if you remained silent." The Incumbent Protection Bill would squelch the ability of groups like GOA to report on a candidate's record during a campaign. The anti-gun bill has now been put off indefinitely, and House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R) said he had no plans to bring up Incumbent Protection in the near future. Hill watchers predict the bill could be dead for the legislative session. Although House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt (D) says he might turn to a discharge petition which would force the Incumbent Protection Bill to the floor for a vote if Representatives can garner 218 signatures. - -- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- RKBA! ***** Blessings On Thee, Oh Israel! ***** RKBA! - ----------------+----------+--------------------------+--------------------- An _EFFECTIVE_ | Insured | All matter is vibration. | Let he who hath no weapon in every | by COLT; | -- Max Plank | weapon sell his hand = Freedom | DIAL | In the beginning was the | garment and buy a on every side! | 1911-A1. | word. -- The Bible | sword.--Jesus Christ - ----------------+----------+--------------------------+--------------------- Constitutional Government is dead, LONG LIVE THE CONSTITUTION!!!!! - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2001 00:26:03 -0700 From: Bill Vance Subject: Fiedor Report on the News (fwd) Fiedor Report on the News A Weekly View from the Foothills of Appalachia July 15, 2001 #236 by: Doug Fiedor dfiedor@home.com - --------------------------------------------------------------------- MORE BUREAUCRATIC OPPRESSION Bureaucrats tend to justify their own existence by branching out into new areas. Except, every time they migrate into new territories, they also make more law regulating the actions of the people. Better put, to justify their existence, bureaucrats continually look for new reasons to write more regulations that allow them to exert control over non bureaucrats. Nonetheless, they are still fun to watch. On one hand, they tell us we live in the freest country in the world. In the next breath, they state that we could be imprisoned for using too much water in our toilet, marketing products without a license, driving without a seatbelt, or saying a little prayer in a public building. They still agree that the Constitution has a Ninth and Tenth Amendment. Then they say that their bureaucratic function, of course, supercedes all that. That's justified with their favorite mantra: "for the health of the children." That mantra allowed government to regulate bread, cereal, meat, fish, toilet paper, fast food, and thousands of useful chemicals -- including natural elements. Years ago, one of the government's silliest programs was their sudden quest to get lead out of everything. Government said it was "for the children," so every liberal media outlet in the country touted the dangers of lead in the environment -- without having the slightest idea what the hell they were talking about. It is true that one will be harmed by eating lead. Iron, copper and zinc are not good to eat, either. Bureaucrats needed more than just that little fact to justify "getting the lead out." So, they said lead is responsible for causing slow learners in children. No mother wants her kid to be a slow learner, so there you have it. The lead is now out of gasoline, paint and whatever. And, what happened? The scholastic ability of children crashed significantly. Did the lack of lead have anything to do with that? Of course not. But neither did the presence of lead in our daily environment cause slow learners for any but those who consumed a lot of it. The Environmental Protection Agency didn't learn much from that silly caper. Now, they want to regulate dirt. Yeah, dirt; as in dry dirt in the form of dust in the air. It shall be illegal to have dirt (dust) in the air because some child may breathe it. There is no concern, however, that man has been eating and breathing dirt and dust continuously since his existence on this earth. One might guess that we would be used to that by now. Among other natural elements now proposed for government control, we read that: "EPA is directed to propose legislation and work with Congress to establish mandatory reduction targets for sulfur, nitrogen oxide and mercury. The legislation should include a reasonable phase in period, regulatory certainty for utilities, and market based incentives."(1) The operative word there is "mandatory." That's the word that allows them to attack anyone not complying with (squad fire) SWAT teams. Apparently, a boy cannot even play with a little mercury on his desk in school anymore. What a shame. No more shiny dimes. It continues, though. According to that same EPA directive: "All agencies are directed to support continued research into global climate change. Agencies should work domestically and in cooperation with allies to develop technologies, market-based incentives, and other innovative approaches to address the issue of global climate change." Here's another inconvenient little question: When did the last ice age end? The answer is very inconvenient: It is just now ending. So, what might one envision happening around the earth at the end of an ice age? According to the scientists at the Illinois State Museum: "If 'ice age' is used to refer to long, generally cool, intervals during which glaciers advance and retreat, we are still in one today. Our modern climate represents a very short, warm period between glacial advances."(2) The U.S. Geological Survey publishes "Glimpses of the Ice Age from I-81" about the remnants of the Ice Age on the mountains between Strasburg and Harrisonburg, Virginia.(3) Yes, bureaucrats are fun to watch. But, they are also a very dangerous lot. Quite often, they use junk science and even out and out lies to alarm the general public. Then, their fixes for their contrived problems always center around more control over the private and public affairs of the people. And, with very few exceptions, the liberal American media allow bureaucrats to get away with it. - ----------------------------- 1. http://www.epa.gov/epahome/headline_051801.htm 2. http://museum.state.il.us/exhibits/ice_ages/when_ice_ages.html 3. http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/i81/ MORE CAPITAL HILL TURPITUDE Socialists, scoundrels and scumbags abound. Anyone studying government knows that is how Capital Hill is. It's always been bad there. But after Clinton, moral turpitude is even more common and acceptable. The bulk of the sleaze is on the Democratic side. But, with only a couple exceptions, even the best of the Republicans are also guilty because they do not speak up. They are supposed to be lawmakers, not taciturn spectators. By not reporting blatant lawbreaking by their coworkers, they are themselves breaking the law. For instance, most Americans know there was rampant voter fraud in the last election. Yet, we hear no outrage from any quarter in Washington. Nothing is done. No grand jury was impaneled. No investigations are in progress. So, apparently everyone in Washington agrees that widespread voter fraud is now acceptable. It's the same story with campaign finance. There are people bragging that they gave about a million bucks to the Hillary for Senate campaign. Well, I hate to be inconvenient here, but according to federal law, the limit is $2,000. So, why no arrests? Right. As the Democrats say, everyone does it. So, that apparently makes it legal. Except, there's still those campaign laws. . . . Two years ago, someone got their underwear in a bunch and turned in the little loudmouth, Senator Robert Torricelli (D-NJ), for campaign fundraising illegalities. Soon thereafter, Torricelli found himself under investigation by Mary Jo White, U.S. Attorney for New York -- a Clinton appointee. White already got convictions on some of the players in that case and it appears that Torricelli is to be indicted very soon. This could be a great case to watch. Because, also involved in the illegal campaign finance scam are the two Senators from New York and a couple others. So, if White nails Torricelli, there might also be a domino effect -- and about five Republican Senators appointed. Because, according to rumor on the street, besides the illegal campaign finance activities, these Senators have all also received a number of rather expensive gifts under the table.(1) Five socialists, one case. We look for the dominoes to start falling next month. Expect the incessant whine of the Democrats to be very entertaining, at least for the first week. It looks like a cocky, little gun-grabbing socialist on the House side will be drummed out of politics, too. This is just another of those stories of a man in power fishing in the secretarial (intern) pool and getting caught. That's always a stupid thing to do and he knew it. So Rep. Gary A. Condit (D-CA), another member of the Party of the Ass, bites the dust. Yawn. . . . Why? No, not because his little paramour, Chandra Levy, came up missing. How many does that make in Washington? Probably at least twenty interns, pages and whatever have turned up missing in the past couple years. Some were found dead. Most were never found. There's a very large ocean right next to the District. It's easy to make sure someone stays disappeared there. The point is, this is a story that should not be much of a story. Yet, it's easy to report, so the media feeds on it like Teddy Kennedy scarfing up finger food at happy hour. So, now we know Condit changes favorite squeezes about as often as some Senators change their Depends. Sometimes he was "dating" two or three at a time. And, we learn, he liked a little bondage and discipline sometimes and even hung out with the Hells Angels. Just your average Democratic scumbag politician, in other words. Then he screwed up. So, now he's going to have to resign and he may get prosecuted. He blatantly broke the law, almost right in front of us all. One of his main squeezes, the coffee, tea or me stewardess Anne Marie Smith, is making the TV chat show rounds admitting her tryst with a married man. As part of her story, she seems to have evidence that Condit pulled a Clinton and tried a little witness tampering and suborning perjury. Condit tried to persuade the flight attendant to deny their affair under oath. Didn't work. Smith blabbed. Now he's in trouble. Suddenly, everyone involved hired lawyers and publicists and we are stuck hearing about these jerks all day every day. Meanwhile, there are a couple thousand people in Washington trying to completely entrench socialism in the United States and the media spends all its time reporting this soap opera. - ----------------------------- 1. http://torricellideathwatch.com/torch1.html HERE COMES REAL FASCISM From time to time, we've been using the term "fascist" in reference to certain government activities. That's because, when an action or program instituted by government is socialistic, reactionary and dictatorial in nature, the tag "fascist" seems to be all that fits properly. So, when we see government demand that businesses like banks provide government agents private information on all customers, allow their bureaucracies to assume everyone is guilty and force people to prove their innocence, and send heavily armed masked men to raid people's homes in the dead of night, we call it as we see it. These tactics should not exist in the United States. Government agents intend to push us as far as possible with their Big Brother style technological snooping. The latest assault on our liberty is the mating of video cameras with computers. Every day, in over 60 jurisdictions around the country, cameras are used to catch people as they try to beat yellow lights.(1) According to USA Today: "In San Diego alone, more than 60,000 traffic tickets are issued each year from the cameras at 19 intersections." That's bad enough. But now, other areas like Virginia Beach, Tampa, Florida and The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles, plan true Big Brother-like fascism in the form of creating massive databases that contain computerized three-dimensional facial maps of residents. Surveillance cameras are then to be placed in various popular areas so people "police are looking for" can be identified. Privacy and liberty be damned, in other words. The expediency of government agents must take precedence over Constitutional freedoms. Not everyone in government agrees with this type of Big Brother fascism, though. Last Wednesday, House Republican Leader Richard Armey (R-TX) and the American Civil Liberties Union issued a joint statement calling on state and local governments to stop using surveillance cameras.(2) "Over the past several days, a troubling expansion in the way technology is being used in the surveillance of ordinary Americans has come to light. In response, we are today joining together to call on all state and local governments to stop using these dangerous technologies now before privacy in America is so diminished that it becomes nothing more than a fond memory." The statement concluded: "The threats to privacy in America are all too real. We believe the privacy risk outweighs any benefits that these devices may offer. It's time to take notice of what has happened to privacy in America today." We agree with the Majority Leader, of course. However, we also note that there are another five-hundred and thirty-some people in Congress who are saying absolutely nothing. Those on the various intelligence committees would be especially welcome to speak out. Because . . . it appears there may be a coordinated method to this madness. In the background, there is a government movement to create a fancy new position with all sorts of very serious new powers. And, of course, they want the ability to find anyone at anytime. This comes from the report of The U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century. They start out with: "We recommend that a new office of Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security be created to oversee the various Department of Defense activities and ensure that the necessary resources are made available." Which, in civilian speak means, the American military should be used against civilians on American soil. "New priorities also need to be set for the U.S. armed forces in light of the threat to the homeland. We urge, in particular, that the National Guard be given homeland security as a primary mission, as the U.S. Constitution itself ordains. The National Guard should be reorganized, trained, and equipped to undertake that mission." National Guard as police, in other words. It's probably acceptable to have the National Guard protect our borders. After all, something needs to be done to block that constant assault of illegal drugs and aliens. But, these people are trained as military -- to kill people and break things -- and may not be trusted to act as peace officers. In summary, they report: "Finally, we recommend that Congress reorganize itself to accommodate this Executive Branch realignment, and that it also form a special select committee for homeland security to provide Congressional support and oversight in this critical area." This would be yet another Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) caper, of course. It is, more or less, just another step in putting FEMA(4) in control of everything whenever they wish to declare an emergency. - ----------------------------- 1. http://freedom.house.gov/auto 2. http://freedom.house.gov/library/technology/aclu.asp 3. http://www.nssg.gov/phaseiii.pdf Note: the above link does not work 24/7 4. http://www.fema.gov ~ End ~ - -- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- RKBA! - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - ------------------------------ End of roc-digest V2 #452 *************************
