It's been a stiff competition, but the Record Mirror commemorative toffee
apple for "hardest rave track of the year" has been clinched by a late rally
from The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu, with a track which took 45 minutes to
record and may not even be released! Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty (aka The
KLF and The Timelords) have been worrying children and small animals since
their mysterious slab of grey vinyl landed on select doormats a few weeks 
back. DJs and meejah types asked to choose one of eight suggested titles
for the disc plumped for "It's Grim Up North" and that's not really surprising.

The JAMS' new track is one mind-blowing mental onslaught of what they call
"Turbo reality for the bleep generation" and an inspiring taster for their
forthcoming "Black Room" album. Their appressive soundtrack of poring rain,
thundering juggernauts, steam-driven factory horns and numbing acidic 
keyboard lines is the closest epitomy of Northern urban decay since "The Les
Dennis Laughter Show".

"We went to this rave and the sound system was broken" says Jimmy, explaining
the inspiration for the caophonous wall of sound. "All you could hear was this
kind of screeching top-end and a really low bass drum and we thought, 'Wow, 
this is what the kids are into'. The 'Black Room' album will all be this kind
of electro turbo metal. It's not really industrial like, say, Throbbing Gristle,
because it's coming from house and has an uplifting vibe about it. But it's so
heavy it will just pin you to the floor."

Meanwhile, no less frenetic is Jimmy and Bill's timely remix and release of 
the rave classic "3am Eternal" under their alter ego's name, The KLF. Both
could be competing for playlist space in the new year, but "It's Grim Up North"
could be a bit too manic for the disco dollies to handle.
