Just found this article in this week's Melody Maker (5/3/94), thought it might be of some interest: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Merry Pranksters Have the KLF sneaked back into the recording studio? Or is somebody pulling a fast one on the Kings Of Con? PETER ROBINSON reports Photo by Ancient Of Mu Mu GRANT PEDEN JIMI Cauty and Bill Drummond gained a reputation as scamsters of the highest order during their five-year career as THE JUSTIFIED ANCIENTS OF MU MU, THE TIMELORDS and THE KLF. In turn, they themselves were targeted and even out-scammed on a number of occasions. Despite splitting up The KLF and leaving the music business to work as THE K FOUNDATION, they've continued to attract more than their fair share of pranksters, imposters and nutters. There is, for example, WANDA DEE, the disco diva sampled on "What Time Is Love?" and "Last Train To Trancentral", who recently toured America and Australia with a troupe of scantily-clad male dancers under the name THE KLF EXPERIENCE. There have also been records like HARDCORE OUTLAW's "It's Weird Out West", a thinly disguised version of "It's Grim Up North", and PRESIDENT BASS' "Guns Of Mu Mu", both of which are the work of London KLF freak Michael Mac. And let's not forget last year's "Justified And Asian" by THE KK KINGS. The latest group to be associated with Cauty and Drummond are XSX. Also known as X$X, over the last few months they have released a CD and a number of cassettes, the sleeves of which use the same style of artwork as that of The K Foundation's adverts and bear Cauty and Drummond's current box number address. The group have also distributed flyers boasting messages such as "Who Killed The KLF?" The XSX CD is called "The Black Room", the title of the unfinished album which The KLF recorded with Extreme Noise Terror, and features 70 minutes of silence apart from the words "Don't buy 'The Black Room'". Their most recent cassette is "Now 1997", a play on The JAMMs' "1987 - What The F***'s Going On?" LP. This includes extensive samples of The KLF and snatches of telephone conversations between a member of XSX and a voice purporting to be Bill Drummond. XSX's self-styled publicist, MICHAEL KEARNEY, aka Michael K, says the group has three core members, including "a mysterious Jimi C". Beyond this, he is unwilling to divulge any information about the identity of those involved. Kearney does, however, claim that he was responsible for some of the footage used in the behind the scenes documentary tagged on the end of The KLF's "Stadium House" video. He also says that he is connected with Mickey McElwee, the central character in The KLF's abandoned motion picture, "The White Room". Mick Houghton, The KLF/K Foundation press officer, has consistently denied that Cauty and Drummond have any association with XSX, while Bill Butt, the director of "Stadium House", says he cannot recall anybody called Michael Kearney or Michael K being involved in the project. Scott Piering, The KLF's radio plugger, is similarly sceptical of Kearney's claims. "This guy has a very complex general scheme and I don't fully understand his purpose," says Piering. "But it's certainly more to do with guerilla media manipulation than music. He's deeply absorbed in what he's doing, but I have a feeling that he's a bit deluded, if not demented." Jimi Cauty and Bill Drummond, meanwhile, are unconcerned. As they have repeatedly declared in press statements, they no longer wish to have any involvement in the music business. The day that is acceppted is the day The K Foundation have succeeded. Beware of any cheap imitations. Peter Robinson is the author of the booklets, 'Justified And Ancient History: The Unfolding Story Of The KLF' and 'History Rewritten: The Never Ending Story Of The K Foundation'.
