Now Vanuatu is once again in the vanguard, having declared the intention to base its entire economy on renewable energy. In September, the country's president, John Bani, asked for help from the international community in preparing a feasibility study for a hydrogen- and geothermal-based renewable energy economy. Bani's government has expressed its hope of becoming entirely dependent on renewables by 2020. Known as New Hebrides until it gained its independence in 1980, Vanuatu is one of the least developed nations in the world. Consisting of 83 islands and having a population of 190,000, its economy depends heavily on tourism, fish and meat processing and exports of copra, coconuts, coffee and cocoa. In 1997, the island's total electricity demand was 32 megawatts. --Environment Hawai'i _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. As you know, he's involved in DOE publicly announcing the "subcritical" nuclear tests 24-48 hours before the detonations. He states that two weeks ago, the January date he gave me was the correct info., but that they subsequently changed it to 12/14/00. He never volunteers information - I always contact him. Over the last several years of "subcritical" testing, he's generally been very reliable about the "subcritical" timeframes, but I believe that DOE has just neatly trumped our attempt to get many people to the demonstration we always do at Bechtel in San Francisco on test days. You can read the article by going to their website:=20 http://marieclaire.com/mc/articles/11peac11.htm The website provides a link to Project Abolition's website where people can read the Appeal for Responsible Security -- a simple, two-paragraph statement calling for immediate deep reductions in U.S. nuclear weapons, leading to their complete elimination, launched in October with a full-page ad in the New York Times featuring high-profile signatories such as Maya Angelou, Harrison Ford, and Corretta Scott King. Sign up for an organizing packet today! http://www.projectabolition.org/articles/appeal.html Project Abolition is getting a good response from people who have been inspired by this article to take action on abolishing nuclear weapons. Many thanks to the folks at the Global Security Institute and Fenton Communications for getting this into print! The Northern Calif. groups that convene for quarterly meetings of the No. Cal. regional Abolition 2000 have all supported this I believe we need both a planned event as well as demonstrations on the test days. We have been able to turn out a good number of people for noontime protests on test days in the past, even with only 24-48 hours notice from DOE. The "Oboe 6" situation caught us short in that it was the only time that a "subcritical" nuclear test was done 6 weeks before the unofficially given test date. The Japanese reporters that called me yesterday discussed the obvious speculation that the sudden decision for yesterday's test might be tied to the resolution of the Bush-Gore campaigns, i.e., a strong pro-nuclear, pro-militaristic message. I am glad that you were able to be there. NDE also had a vigil at the Las Vegas DOE office. He should probably also be involved with any efforts to circulate a petition, etc., about this issue.
