It is an unofficial list for discussing in a positive and supportive environment the many fine publications of the FARMS organization. The topics will undoubtedly include the Book of Mormon, Mesoamerican archaeology, early Christian history, the Gnostic writings, the Book of Abraham, the Book of Enoch, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and many other topics that have been included in the books, monographs, and periodicals published by FARMS. You can read more and subscribe at http://home.att.net/~jredelfs/fofwelcome.html If any of you could help me get the word out by posting some kind of announcement or invitation to you list, I would be deeply grateful. The journal hopes to offer "the latest in LDS literature, reviews, trends and insights." According to Benson Parkinson, co-founder, "My strongest interest is the 'Literature of Zion,' that implies consecration, serving with all of one's heart, might, mind and strength. I'd like to see Irreantum help Mormondom define its voice." >>>> This is great, but I've noticed that every outlet that's carried this, from the Deseret News on, has perpetuated the same typo in my quote. That should read: "My strongest interest is the 'Literature of Zion'; that implies consecration, serving with all one's heart, might, mind, and strength." A comma splice is embarrasing to Irreantum and doubly so to me personally, since I'm an editor for my day job and get paid to nab such things. (Don't gasp--I know my list posts are full of misspellings. I've always said spelling is optional on the list--I don't give my posts the scrutiny I do things I'm editing.) Ah, well. We're happy for the exposure, and Chris Bigelow informs me we've already had some inquiries from the Deseret News item. As part of National Poetry month, our newest Borders Bookstore has been having poetry readings and activities all this month. I have attended several, and they were great. To finish up the month, they are staging _I Am Poet_, an open mike reading for ten people. Each of these ten people were chosen out of dozens (not sure of exact numbers) to read two or three poems each, and guess who was chosen?!?!? You guessed it, ME! I got the phone call informing me of the decision yesterday afternoon, and I am still in shock. I in no way expected to be chosen. There is also a ten dollar prize that goes along with it. What was even more shocking was that the lady in charge specifically requested two of the 9 poems I submitted, I get to pick the third, and I have no idea which one to pick. The reading is this coming Sunday, and needless to say, if any of you are in the area, you are more than welcome to come and listen. I guess this makes me a poet? Actually, it was one of the few times I received any payment for the few poems I've published. This honor will probably motivate you to greater heights, but be prepared, for poets are paid pathetic sums. Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" by the Temple Square Chorale and Orchestra in the Assembly Hall in Salt Lake City. It was a rare opportunity to hear this piece live. The musicians, led by Mack Wilberg, did a first-rate job. They sounded absolutely professional, and were accompanied by some fine out-of-state soloists. At the end of the final, heartrending chorus I let out my breath; I wasn't even aware I was holding it, and the audience burst into tumultuous applause and "bravos". It was sung in English translation, so the spiritual impact was that much greater (I've become convinced that all sacred music should be performed in the native language of the hearers, like the late Robert Shaw advocated.) And it was free to the public, so it was essentially a gift from the church to the general public. If this is a taste of what we can look forward to from these new musical groups, we are in for some great stuff in the future. R.W. The companies have together paid about $22 million in royalties to the Salt Lake Olympic Committee. Deseret Book's license allows it to produce pre-Olympic hard-bound books using the 2002 Winter Games' trademarked logo and terminology. In exchange for the license, Deseret Book will pay the SLOC an advance against future royalty payments.
