I always assumed that was in the Book of Lehi (the 116 pages stolen from Martin Harris). A possibly related issue is how did the Nephites get the Brother of Jared's interpreters (see D&C 17:1)--through Coriantumr via the Mulekites? Maybe we'd know if we had the missing pages. | >Could something similar be happening in Scripture? In Genesis, for | >instance, it is not explained where Cain's and Abel's wives comes from | >(another creation?) It seems as though the writer of Genesis failed to | >include that part of the story for whatever reason. Was that on purpose | >or an editorial error? Does it really matter, since the main story of | >Adam and Eve remains intact. | Well, that could easily be grouped with all of the other failures to | mention women in the scriptures. The question of where Cain's and Abel's wives came from is explained in Moses 5:2-3. As I read about the godfather Salman Rushdie and then the = woman who wrote _The God of Small Things_ all the way up into today's = flowering of young Indian writers winning awards and publication in the = U.S.'s most prestigious venues, I thought: What happened to Mormonism's = chance to rise up into national literary consciousness? Back in the Lost = Generation (1930s and '40s, I believe), we did have a few writers making = national inroads with Mormon themes (Whipple, Sorensen), but then momentum = died and Mormonism as a literary theme apparently went into hiding except = for the occasional sensationalistic tell-all from an ex-wife. Is Orson = Scott Card the godfather of a new wave of Mormon fiction rising in = national circles, or is such a thing not possible like it has been with = Southern, Catholic, Chinese, Jewish, and most recently Indian? I think = both Whipple and Sorensen were undercut by the negative response of the = home Mormon crowd, which in my opinion amounts to ruining our cultural = heritage. Maybe Mormons looked on the members of the Lost Generation as = soiling the nest--but at least they were trying to act as if there WAS a = Mormon cultural nest. Let's hope we can learn some lessons from the Lost = Generation that will help us keep the momentum going the next time (and = perhaps we are riding a swell now that may one day crest with Mormons = winning awards and prestigious publication for explicity Mormon themes, = characters, and settings).
