That's what my friends and I were guessing as well - it was actually a very interesting list, given that it seems like every "so-and-so-'s countdown" on MTV is nearly entirely R&B videos. I sort of felt like they let them pick the artists but in some cases controlled the actual video choice - I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if whoever it was was actually a Fiona Apple song, but I doubt that even a fan would pick her jaw-wired-shut version of "Across the Universe"! I really wish you could trust those MTV things. I'm sort of curious what they actually do listen to. Though I totally believe Seth Green listens to the Beasties and Green Day. (Almost) loved it. Here it goes.... S P O I L E R S "Homecoming" (Nov. 2/98): Synopsis: 1) Buffy and Cordelia compete for Homecoming Queen, and are caught in this Slayerfest"; 2) Xander and Willow kiss and feel guilty about it; 3) Scott dumps Buffy; and 4) we meet the mayor. Review: Oh, you can see it want to be a classic. It was a vastly entertaining show, really it was--it was missing something that I'm still trying to figure out. I'll say this--do not let Charisma Carpenter off the show! She is the most accomplished comedic actor of the bunch (SMG is not naturally funny), and beautiful to boot. The homecoming storyline was brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! I also adore Xander and Cordelia. But that's not why I didn't care for "the kiss". That kiss was too reminiscent of Dawson's Creek (Joey and Dawson kissed in Dawson's bedroom). I was waiting for that darn Paula Cole song to play over them ("I don't wanna wait for my life to be over..."). And as for Faith--it's official, I want her dead. Anyone can kill her--those vampires, Cordelia, Buffy's mom, Principle Snyder, I don't care. She is so dreadfully empty and lame I just want to turn the tv off when I see her. What was that thing she did to Scott? Buffy was a total mope whenever he was around him (the best thing about the Homecoming storyline was the fact that it elevated Buffy's mood for once), so he dumped her ass. That's the only thing that made Scott something other than a stale character. And as for that black vampire, I don't care for him--he's a poor man's Spike. Despite these problems, the episode was so damn funny that I pretty much had no trouble overlooking them. Every new episode provides lots of new keeper possibilities!! If you see something that you like in an episode, you should try to be the keeper of it. "Keeping" is a way of showing your love for the show and your favorite characters, places and quotes. Some sites divide the claims into Keepers and Guardians... Keepers keep tangible items that you could actually touch. Guardians guard things like attitudes, expressions or experiences. When you are the keeper or guardian of an item you have claimed it and can add it to the signature line of your e-mails. Claims are made on everything from Xander's ho-hos to Cordelia's snobbiness, from Angel's penetrating gaze to Buffy's "issues," from Kendra's "Mr. Pointy" to Giles' coats and ties. The keeper sites get flooded with requests the second after a new episode airs. So submit your request quickly to improve your chances of getting your favorite claims. It's always first come, first served. And remember to have fun! Be creative with your claim requests! You'll enjoy them more and so will everyone who reads your sig. Is Joss channeling Julie Brown ??? Ok, hopefully that's enough. A good friend of mine who works for a cable TV station caught this weeks episode off the wild feed and delivered the tape to me yesterday, so I got to see it at the same time as the Canadian folks (and with no commercials to boot, I think that I could easily get spoiled (no pun intended). This episode was easily the best of the season so far. Not much Angel, but you can't have everything. The story evolves around Buffy's suddenly faltering attempt to have a real life in addition to being the slayer. You know how things that seem to be going so well then suddenly fall apart? Buffy's life seems to be right on track, she's back in school which is apparently going well, she's got a boyfriend and is attempting to keep her emotional distance from Angel, who is currently up to three word sentences. Then comes the one-two (three?) punch. Suddenly, apparently without warning and just before homecoming, Scott announces that he's dumping Buffy (hearing echoes of the rabid anti-Scott faction jumping up and down an cheering). After that she goes to her favorite teacher in hopes of securing 'A glowing recommendation' (I don't think we've ever seen or heard of this gal before, a minor annoyance) only to find that said teacher has no clue who she is. To add insult to injury, she's missed having her picture taken for the yearbook. Down and the dumps and in need of a visibility check (reference 'Invisible Girl') she decides to take action instead of just moping. So she challenges Cordy for the title of homecoming queen. Meanwhile, we finally get to meet the mayor. He's seriously creepy the way that Ted was creepy. Utterly mild mannered, compulsively fastidious and his staff is utterly terrified of him. He learns that Mr. Trick is hosting 'Slayerfest 98' ( a competition between assassins of various species, occult or otherwise, whoever kills the slayers get a large cash prize) and has him apprehended, not to stop him, but to recruit him. Apparently the mayor has plans for the town's youth and sees Buffy as a 'disruptive influence' Anyway, the Scooby gang, tiring of dissention within the ranks, have decided to stick Buffy and Cordy in a limo together with instructions to 'work it out'. The limo deposits them in the middle of nowhere (them having worked nothing out), slayerfest begins and wackiness ensues. Have you ever noticed that the gang is best at working out interpersonal problems while thumping bad guys???? Best line of the show (imho) 'Cordy, the gun! ............ Cordy, the spatula.' Funniest line of the show (Giles to Willow & Xander at the homecoming dance) 'There's terrible danger! We must find Buffy! ..... Just kidding, are those finger sandwiches?' Most satisfying scene, Faith putting Scott in his place in front of his homecoming date (as only Faith could get away with doing). Continuity: The Cowboy vamp from bad eggs is back and he hasn't changed at all. A new story thread also got started. Xander has finally noticed that Willow is a girl. In return Willow's not-to-deeply-buried affection is resurrected leaving them both confused, uncomfortable with each other, and miserably unsure of what to do. You know that Joss had to do something to Xander/Cordelia & Willow/Oz, they were just too happy, nobody's allowed to be happy for long in this show. I don't like the way this is going. I'm not a Xander-hater, but I don't think that he deserves Willow, I like her and Oz together. Anyway, it was an incredibly funny episode, a lot of action, minimal moping and we get rid of Scott (at least for now). Cordelia fans are just going to love this episode (especially those who have been complaining that she's been getting too soft). These are just a few netiquette conventions we'd like people to use, though they aren't list rules per se. 1. Mailing lists ARE NOT chat rooms. When you post, a copy of your note goes out to the 900+ people subscribed to these lists. Please make sure your post *contributes* to the conversation and is something that would be of interest to the majority of people who are likely to get a copy in their mailbox. 2. This is a public mailing list. That means that anyone on the internet can potentially read what you've written. So, don't say anything here that you wouldn't say to a crowded room full of people while being videotaped for all posterity to see. 3. If you have problems with list content, or with something someone said onlist please DO NOT take it up onlist (aside from general differences of opinion during a BTVS discussion). Nine times out of ten Jill or I have taken care of it--we try to run the list behind the scenes as much as possible and watch it very carefully. We don't miss much, and are usually quick to take some form of action. However, if you think we may have missed something, write to us PRIVATELY. Or take it up with the individual PRIVATELY. Jill, Lisa Rose and I are responsible for the list and are here to make sure things run smoothly. While we can't and won't do anything about things you receive in private email, we can and will do something about people onlist if we feel it is necessary. 4. Please try to read ALL the mail in your mailbox before responding onlist to a question. We get about 20 answers to a question sometimes, and if people would just read their mailbox contents before responding we could avoid all the repetition. 5. If you have questions, please read the FAQ. It's at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/1763/buffyfaq.html. Please SAVE this message for future reference. The buffy FAQ can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/1763/buffyfaq.html. Please check it out ASAP--Cagey has done a wonderful job with it and it will answer a bunch of your questions about the show and fandom. PLEASE READ THE FAQ before posting questions to the list-- many common questions are covered there. Because we want this list to be a great place to talk about "Buffy," we are setting up a few ground rules. If you've ever been involved in a discussion list, many of these rules will look familiar. Hopefully, they'll make list life more interesting (and more fun) for everyone. Please note: we enforce these rules. This is an extremely high- volume list, and we want to make sure that the volume is relevant to the show. 1. Keep posts on topic. Topics should be related to Buffy the series, Buffy the movie, the actors involved in either project, etc.. Discussion of vampires in other universes is fine as long as they're being discussed in relation to the Buffy universe. This also means NO chain letters, "scroll down" games, virus warnings, etc.. 2. Please be careful with the use of strong imagery or language in consideration of younger list members. Think "rated PG." Also, no masking (replacing one letter of a potentially offensive word with an asterisk). 3. No advertising of non-Buffy related items or services. If you want to post information about Buffy-related merchandise, conventions, etc., clear it through one of us first. Also, no attachments, or binary files of any sort (including images, wavs, MOVs, etc). 4. Please don't post fiction to this list. There is a separate Buffy fiction list (subscription info below). 5. If you get advance information on a new episode, or see an episode earlier than the national viewing time, and you want to post about it, YOU MUST do the following: **Mark the post as a "spoiler" in the subject header. **DO NOT give away the spoiler in the subject header--be vague! **Leave about twelve lines at the top of the post. Don't leave them blank or with periods/dashes-- some mailers think the message is over and will cut it off. Use non-spoiler info or do something like this: s p o I l e r For the required number of lines, of course. This ensures that anyone who doesn't like knowing about an episode ahead of time is "protected." :) The blank space is for people whose mailers automatically open up the next piece of mail, without giving them a chance to see "spoiler" in the header. Spoiler warnings are not necessary after the start of the episode's national viewing time, which is currently set at 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Eastern Standard Time. Spoiler warnings are not necessary for reruns. Additional spoiler info: Once a promotional "trailer" has aired at the end of an episode, the information in that trailer does need to be spoiler protected, even if it contains advance information that has been under spoiler protection previously. The general rule is: if it has AIRED, it doesn't need spoiler protection. Episode information of ANY kind from TV Guide or local TV listings MUST be spoiler protected until the episode airs, unless it's exactly what has appeared in an aired promotional trailer. TV Guide info is often very, very specific, and this is the kind of spoiler info some people just don't want to know ahead of time. 6. Most importantly, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO FLAMING ONLIST. We have absolutely zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour. Flames can kill a list, permanently damage relationships, and make life a lot less fun for everyone. Broadly defined, a flame is a personally derogatory, inflammatory comment about another list member, their progenitors, or about any of the actors, writers, directors, producers or crew of "Buffy." Disagreements-- even heated ones-- are expected. But the minute you start slamming someone personally, you will face the Wrath of Jill and Sharon. First offense: offender is uns*bscribed for one week. Second offense: offender is uns*bscribed to the Buffy list for a minimum of three months. If the offender returns and flames again, they're offlist permanently. And no, it doesn't matter that the actors, writers, etc. from "Buffy" aren't onlist; we won't put up with anyone flaming them anyway. Determination of what is (and what is not) a flame is made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. Determinations of any penalties associated with flames are also made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. 7. Related to #6, the listowners reserve the right to "kill" any discussion threads which either of the listowners deem offensive, or which appear to be degenerating into a flame war. If either one of us declares a topic "dead," it's dead. Anyone who continues the discussion thread, against our express wishes, will be immediately uns*bscribed for one week. 8. Please limit quotes of a previous post to four lines maximum per point you are responding to. Buffy is a high traffic list, and we're asking s*bscribers to be mindful of wasted bandwidth when they respond to posts. For example, here's an original quote: >I just love Buuffy the Vampire Slayer. It's my favorite show, and about the only thing I watch on television anymore. I look forward to each and every episode. DOes anyone know hot to write to the stars of the show, or where to write to show our support? Willow is my favorite character, but I like Buffy a lot to. And Giles! Woo hoo! I recognize him from VR5.< If you want to ansewr this person's questions about where to write, there's no need to include the extra stuff, so your response should look like this: >Does >anyone know how to write to the stars of the show, or where to write >to show our support? You can even clean it up further and put it onto two lines, but you get the picture. Only include the relevant stuff in your response, so that people get what you're talking about. Penalties: First offense: Offlist warning (clearly marked WARNING: Overquoting). Second offense: Removal from the list for one week. 9. Please limit your .sig to 6 lines maximum, but do include your name and email address at the bottom of each post so someone can respond to you privately if they want to. Penalties for not following this rule are the same as for #8. 10. Do NOT post personal information, or requests for personal information, about the cast, crew, etc. of "Buffy" to this list. Personal information includes (but is not limited to) home address, telephone number, email address (unless the individual gives it out freely), etc. It's certainly fine to discuss who's dating whom, or how tall someone is, or things like that. But anything that could constitute an invasion of personal privacy (or could potentially be some type of threat to any individual) is strictly forbidden on this list. The penalty for this is ONE warning-- ONE. If it happens again, that person is permanently uns*bscribed from this list. If you have any question over what you're posting, and whether it violates this rule, please email either one of us. 11. And last, but not least, we reserve the right to deny subscription (new, renewed, or continued) to the list for any individual(s). Again, welcome! If you have any questions about these rules, please contact any of us offlist. If you have s*bscription problems or questions, the fastest way to get h*lp is to e-mail one of us at the addresses below, at the kirby@xmission.com addy which is the "official" e-mail owner of the list. Gwyn" Subject: BUFFY: Homecoming, SPOLIERS FOR WEST COAST OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!! I loved this epside, granted I walked in the door at 5:20 p.m. (West Coast) & saw the WGN Feed, I GET TO SEE IT AGAIN (Dancing around the room). Walked right in on X & W getting dressed up. I knew that was going to happen. Since we all know that CC is leaving the show (which I hate by the way, but oh, well), while I'm still in the X&C camp, I'm officially now in the Willow/Xander camp. I just don't want to see Oz's heart get broken *sob*. I think the big break up scene will happen for Xander and Cordy in what 3-5 eps (right before the Chrismas break, what would be really brillant is them breaking up on the Valentine episode, ironic). GO CORDY, she stood up to Lyle like an old pro. I LOVE LYLE GORCH, I want him to be a regular. Does anyone have a page, paying homage to Jonathan? It really should be created, with my running the B Zone and Lilyvalle, being a CL, I just don't have the time. The Mayor is kinda young, that man cowers Snyder? I want to know what kind of demon he is. Don't you think that *I presume* City Hall is kinda of big for Sunnydale (the one starbuck town?). Soon as I sat down, to watch this episode I was screaming with excitement. This is my favorite Episode my far this season, with Anne a close second. Well I'll leave you now. Ciao Ms. Gwyn B Zone: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Studio/8961 A Keeper of a whole lot a things. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - - ------------------------------ End of buffy-digest V2 #551 *************************** To subscribe to buffy or buffy-digest, send the command subscribe buffy-digest or subscribe buffy to majordomo@xmission.com.
