Dixie High School quarterback Lance Pendelton (3-A MVP) and receiver Cody Fonnesbeck have verbally committed to BYU. Fonnesbeck is a small 5-7, 134 lbs, but produces burning speeds. "At a Reebok combine in Long Beach, Calif. Fonnesbeck ran a 4.21 in the 40, fastest among 600 athletes at the combine." He will likely run track at BYU also. Pendelton chose BYU over Utah because of the future schedule that includes Notre Dame, Syracuse, USC and UCLA. He will leave on a church mission in July and will rejoin the Cougars in 2001. "Pendleton ranks as one of the most prolific passers in state history. He threw for a state-record 3,312 yards and 27 touchdowns in 1998." The deal is for a reported $48 million. As part of the deal, the MWC will have at least three Thursday night appearances in football and three Big Monday games in basketball. In addition, the package will will include between 19 and 23 football games each year -- with at least two on ABC, four on ESPN, five on ESPN2 and an average of eight syndicated by ESPN Regional Television. The basketball deal calls for a minimum of 12 games each season, including seven league games, two non-conference games and three Mountain West Conference tournament games. The 39 points were the fewest by New Mexico on its homecourt since a 61-37 loss to San Diego State on Feb. 3, 1984. New Mexico had won 16 straight at home this season and were 68-2 in The Pit dating back to 1996. From Preston (Blackfoot, ID): Now that Coop is hurt, what will the starting line-up be against Utah? Will TC start at the shooting guard and Bigelow move down to the forward spot? Also, when is Cooper expected to return? Response Nate Cooper was injured in the first half of the New Mexico game, breaking his finger. He went to the hospital for x-rays and he didn't finish the game. He is a very tough competitor and he wants to play this Saturday. In fact he practiced with the team on Tuesday and I feel he will play against Utah. The doctor said he is cleared to play if he can take the pain. The coaching staff would have a hard time keeping Nate out of this game. We haven't made a decision how much he will play or if he will start the game. Todd Christensen, Danny Bower, and Brian Dignan will all play more minutes if Nate cannot play. Mark Bigelow will play more minutes at the small forward rather than the shooting guard. From Charlie (American Fork, UT): In the Fresno State game, there seemed to be two different pivotal defensive changes in the game. The first seemed to be made by BYU when Fresno was stopped from scoring at will late in the first half, and the other by Fresno in the final minutes when we couldn't seem to get the ball into Rivers. Can you elaborate on the defensive adjustments in layman's terms? Response Fresno State is a very quick and an explosive offensive team. One of their offensive strategies is to attack the basket with dribble penetration. Early in the game we wanted to keep the ball out of the middle of the court to keep our post players out of foul trouble. We forced them to shoot jump shots and this kept us from fouling them. The only problem was they were making the shots, so we had to make a defensive adjustment to extend our defense. We did have some defensive mistakes in the game but it was a solid defense effort against a high powered offense. Silester Rivers had a great game against Fresno State. He had a lot of energy and he seamed to score every time he touched the ball. We knew Silester had the hot hand and we tried to get the ball to him every time on offense. Fresno State made some adjustments to take the ball out of Silester's hands. They dropped down another defender in front of him to discourage the pass to him in the low post and when he did received the ball in the low post, they double teamed. They forced him to pass the ball to another player. We missed some short open shots that we have made all year. Sometimes you can do everything perfect on offense and the shot doesn't go in, and sometimes you do everything wrong on offense and the shot does go in. Unfortunately, for us the shots were not going in against Fresno State. Thanks, Coach Call! We'll see you next week. Fonnesbeck completed the high school season with impressive numbers but was overlooked because of his small size. He decided to make a highlight tape of himself and sent it to various universities. Out of the blue, South Carolina coach Lou Holtz called and scheduled a campus visit. The campus visit included a locker and football jersey with his name on it. In the end, he chose to be a Cougar. With a score of 15-4, 15-0, 15-6, the match is the Cougars’ most decisive victory of the season and improves their record to a perfect 8-0 overall, 6-0 in MPSF play. Cougar All-Americans Ossie Antonetti and Ryan Millar led the team with nine and eight kills respectively. Millar led BYU’s defensive effort with a team-high seven digs and seven blocks. Outside hitters Ingo Lindemann and Rich Lambourne put down five kills apiece to contribute to BYU’s offensive attack. The win is the Cougars’ second in a four-game California road trip. The Cougars are 6-3 at home, having only dropped nail biters to Arizona, Cal, and Fresno State. Both BYU and Utah are undefeated at home and winless on the road vs. in-state rivals this year. Starter Nathan Cooper suffered a broken finger at the outset of the game in Albuquerque, and it remains to be seen how much or if he will play. Utah made a statement on their road swing through the Southwest this past week, holding New Mexico to only 39 points in The Pit, the Lobos' lowest home tally in over a decade. The 18 point win catapulted the Utes to a #20 national ranking and was only the third home loss for UNM in 71 games (BYU handed them one last season). All-American point guard Andre Miller, supported by big man Hanno Mottola and forward Alex Jensen, presents a challenge for anybody trying to defend him. ================================================== Implications ================================================== A win for BYU would be absolutely huge. At 8-11, the Cougars have to win five of their last seven games to finish with a .500 record, and knocking off the division leading team would be a great way to start the second half of WAC play. But most importantly, this is Utah we're talking about. Barring a possible matchup in tournament play, this will be the last time these two teams meet this season, and state bragging rights for the rest of the MILLENNIUM hinge on this contest. ================================================== Keys to the Game ================================================== BYU needs to keep Andre Miller in check to stay in this game. He had his way with the Cougar backcourt a month ago, and the defensive breakdown that began with him dominoed, letting the Utes run wild. Solid defensive stops will be crucial; over the last three games, the Cougars' opponents have put up red-hot shooting percentages, something that can't happen on Saturday if the Cougs are to come out with a win. Miller scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half as the Utes (18-4, 8-0 WAC Pacific) opened a 31-20 lead after 20 minutes. Utah had its lead cut to six before going on a 24-6 tear to open a 54-33 lead with 8:25 to play on an eight-footer by Killion. Utah, the only undefeated team in the 16-team conference, is enjoying its longest winning streak since starting last season 18-0. The Utes have won the last eight games between the intrastate rivals and are 111-113 all-time against BYU. Mark Bigelow had 11 points but was ejected midway through the second half after picking up a technical foul, which also was his fifth personal foul. The Cougars (8-12, 3-5 WAC Pacific) have lost four straight games, including consecutive losses to ranked opponents. Silester Rivers had four of the Cougars' first seven points of the second half as they closed within 33-27 on a driving layup by Bigelow with 15:51 to go. But Utah found creases in BYU's 1-2-2 zone defense and attacked from the perimeter. Phil Cullen hit a 3-pointer from the left corner and Alex Jensen hit one from the right corner. Bigelow answered with one of his own from beyond the arc to make it 39-30, but Cullen found Miller in the lane, where he hit a five-footer, and Tony Harvey nailed a 3-pointer to give the Utes a 44-30 lead with 11:58 left. Miller blocked a shot and was rewarded by a length of the court pass from Cullen that led to a layup and three-point play to bump the lead to 17. Todd Christensen countered with a three-point play, but Tyson Johnston had a dunk, Mottola sank a free throw after Bigelow's technical foul, Jensen had a follow shot and Killion capped the run with an eight-footer, taking Utah to a 54-33 lead. Utah took its largest lead at 71-42 in the final minute when Killion hit a reverse lay-in. Jensen finished with 10 points as the Utes shot 41 percent (26-of-63) from the field and amassed a 41-28 rebounding advantage. Killion was 7-of-13 from the field, 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Also when is the date that recruits can sign? Response: We have three seniors who will be graduating this year: Danny Bower, Brian Hamilton, and Brian Dignan. Also Mark Bigelow will serve a LDS mission after the season, so we have four scholarships to fill for next year. The next signing period begins April 7th. We are looking for the best players we can get into the program who will help us in our rebuilding efforts. We feel we have made a significant increase in the talent level the past two years and we want to continue to attract the top student/athletes. We desire players who are not only talented athletes and quality students, but who possess a passion for the game of basketball. We feel we have a solid core of young players who just need more experience. We have two freshmen and four sophomores who play a significant amount of minutes in the games. We have a large group of missionaries who are returning this summer, but we have not ruled out the idea of signing a player or two in April, depending on our needs. Most of our efforts have been focused on juniors, sophomores, and freshmen in high school. We already have a commitment from one of the top 50 juniors in the country. There is also the possibility of signing a high school player who would go directly on a LDS mission. The NCAA only allows us 13 scholarships. We wish we had more scholarship but there are not that many to go around. ============================================== From Peter (Provo, UT): As I understand it, your goals at the start of the season were to have at least a .500 season and to make it to the WAC tournament. In light of recent losses, what will the cougars need to do to reach these goals? Response: We need to win our next two home games against Hawaii and San Diego to lock up a spot in the WAC tournament. This would not guarantee it, but we would lead both of them by three games with five games left on the schedule. Also, we would have the tie-breaker in our favor. To finish the season at a.500 winning percentage, we need to win all four of our home games (San Diego State, Hawaii, New Mexico, and UTEP), then win on the road at either San Jose State or Fresno State. We would finish out the season at 13-13, heading to the WAC tournament in Las Vegas. If we finish out the remainder of our games at 5-1, our final WAC record would be 8-6 and we would be a four or fifth seed in the tournament. ============================================== Thanks, Coach Call! Wesley sparked BYU (9-12, 4-5 Western Athletic Conference) to a 17-5 run to open the game. Hawaii (5-17, 2-8) shot just 2-for-9 during BYU's streak and also had two turnovers. BYU led 41-21 at halftime. Behind Mike Robinson's 17 second-half points, Hawaii closed within 58-48 before BYU pulled away. Robinson, who finished with 20 points, had nine in a 20-8 run to bring Hawaii within 51-41 with 12:56 left. Brian Dignan had four free throws in seven seconds to blunt that Rainbows' spurt. He hit two after Casey Cartwright picked up a technical foul for yelling at referee Ed Ristau while protesting a call. Dignan added two more when he was fouled shortly after BYU took the ball out of bounds on the ensuing play. Over 50 pro scouts watched Husky pitcher Jeff Heaverlo, the Washington junior, strike out six Cougars before he exited in the fifth inning after tallying 94 pitches. Heaverlo left with a 12-5 lead, but Daniel Jahn was credited with the victory at Bruce Hurst Field. BYU closed the gap with an eight-run eighth inning when it batted around with seven hits, including a two-run double by David Jensen. BYU (10-12, 5-5 Western Athletic Conference) led 66-62 with 6:59 left after the Aztecs' Dante Wilson hit a 3-pointer. But the Cougars pulled away with a 20-8 run. Wilson's basket had capped a 10-2 run for San Diego State (2-21, 0-11 WAC), during which he and Matt Watts had five points. BYU took control early, taking a 29-9 lead with Todd Christensen and Michael Vranes each getting six points in that streak. But David Abramowitz scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half, and the Aztecs came within 40-33 before the Cougars took a 43-33 lead into the locker room at the break. After averaging 11.3 points per game last year in a very important role for the Cougars, he now waits for any chance to step into the lineup. He's a specialist now, when the coach needs a three point shooter, Danny enters. "I've spent a lot of time watching and cheering," Bower said. "It's been an adjustment for me, but you know, what's happened will help me later in life. "I want to play, sure. The way things have worked out, though, has taught me things that go beyond basketball." With a few improvements, along with wins, BYU could improve its seed in the tournament and try to make a run. One of those improvements is breaking the full court press. "I'm sure we're going to see a press for 40 minutes at Fresno," Cleveland said. "Our problem was mainly one of timing. We had the wrong people at the wrong place and the wrong guys putting the ball into play. "We'll work one or two hours this week on how to handle the press. It'll help to have Dignan healthy. The invitation came by way of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Association. "'It's a great opportunity to meet and mingle with people I know and others I haven't met,' Curtis said. Two former student trainers under Curtis are now with NFL teams: Danny Ruiz (Carolina) and Lonnie Scott (San Diego). BYU had five student trainers working NFL camps this past summer." The Y qualified for the WAC tournament by notching two more wins last week, and can improve its seeding by beating the Bulldogs, who are one game ahead in the division standings. The Cougar starting lineup was shuffled again last week as Michael Vranes came off the bench with a bruised left knee. Todd Christensen played successfully as he started at the point, and will likely continue to do so, with Vranes moving to his more natural shooting guard position, and Mark Bigelow playing three man. Fresno State welcomes the Cougs to its home court, where the Bulldogs are 14-1 so far this season. Jerry Tarkanian's club plays an up tempo style of game, and is averaging over 80 points per contest, being led by guard Courtney Alexander with over 20 points per game. FSU is coming off of a tough week, having dropped two road games to UTEP (73 - 62) and New Mexico (83 - 81). ========================================= Implications ========================================= BYU can finish the regular season at .500 by winning three of their last four games. More importantly, however, is the chance to move up from their current fifth place in the Pacific Division. The last time the Y had FSU on their schedule was 1996, and the result was a split, with each team winning on the road. The Cougars will hope to repeat history and pay back the Bulldogs for the heartbreaker in front of a full house in the Marriott Center last month. ========================================= Keys to the Game ========================================= With an excitable Fresno crowd on hand, BYU can't afford to get in an early deficit against the Bulldogs like they did in their first game. If big men Silester Rivers and Mekeli Wesley continue to produce inside like they've been doing as of late, it will open up the perimeter for Michael Vranes' and Todd Christensen's hot hands. Fresno State (18-9 overall, 7-4 WAC) had five players in double figures, including Terrance Roberson with 14 and Demetrius Porter with 13. Brigham Young (10-13, 5-6) was led by freshman Mark Bigelow, who scored a game-high 23 and had 11 rebounds. Nathan Cooper and Michael Vranes each added 15 for the Cougars. Fresno State made just 31 percent of its shots in the second half and was outrebounded 43-32 but forced 29 turnovers to hold off the Cougars. After five points by Bigelow in the first 1:10 of the game, Fresno State ran off 13 straight points to take the lead. Roberson buried a pair of threes and Alexander hit another three in a span of less than a minute to spark that run. Fresno led by as many as 18 points in the first half before BYU came back to close within eight points. But Roberson hit another three at the buzzer for a 52-41 halftime lead. Brigham Young cut the lead to five points twice in the second half, the last time at 66-61 with just under nine minutes left in the game. But Roberson's first basket of the second half and a bucket by Melvin Ely upped the margin to nine points. BYU battled back in the final minutes, trimming the lead to 74-71 with 1:26 left in the game on consecutive threes by Bigelow and Copper. The Cougars aren't expecting to have their way with the Spartans like they did in Provo, a game in which a toothless SJSU squad was outshot, outrebounded, outhustled, and basically outplayed in every way by BYU. San Jose State will be looking to dish out some revenge in BYU's direction on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans will have the services of guard R.J. Powell, who missed the previous matchup with an injury, and will also have the advantage of their home court, where they are 9-2 this season, as compared with 2-10 on the road. The Spartans have knocked off some good teams this year and shouldn't be judged on their performance in the Marriott Center. ============================= Implications ============================= BYU and San Jose State are currently battling for fifth place in the Pacific Division standings. Three wins to finish out the year, combined with some unlikely losses by other teams could conceivably boost the Cougars to as high as a second place tie in the final standings. Right now, though, Coach Cleveland is focusing on finishing out the regular season strong and creating momentum that will carry through into the WAC Tournament. ============================= Keys to the Game ============================= The Cougars need big man Silester Rivers to stay out of foul trouble so he can contribute for the duration of the game. BYU’s new record of 14,156 topples the previous record of 10,225 held by the Rainbows. All-American Ossie Antonetti led BYU and all players in kills, putting down a phenomenal 41 of 76 swings to end the match with a .395 hitting percentage. “Ossie was incredible tonight,” said BYU head coach Carl McGown. “To hit almost .400 with that many swings is a feat.” Outside hitters Rich Lambourne and Antonetti powered the Cougars to the 15-9 game-one victory. Lambourne hit six for seven in kills and Antonetti put down eight. The win improves the Cougars’ record to 11-0 overall, 9-0 in the MPSF. BYU’s game two loss was only its fifth of the season. The Cougars kept the game close and had it tied at 10, led by nine kills from Antonetti and six more from Ingo Lindemann, but the Rainbows pulled away to take the game 15-11. The Cougars’ and the Rainbows’ intense performance peaked in game three, with neither team leading by more than one point until the Cougars took the game with a 17-15 score. With the tough third game under its belt, BYU moved quickly through game four, finishing off the Rainbows 15-7. BYU will be back in the Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday to play Arizona’s top-ranked club team at 7 p.m. The team will then have a week to prepare before hosting No. 2 UCLA Feb. 26 and 27. BYU Baseball Drops Second Game to Arizona State See: http://www.byucougars.com/baseball/results/021999.html Ryan Pond homered in the fourth and eighth innings Friday, but it wasn’t enough to help BYU in a 17-4 loss to 10th-ranked Arizona State. Pond’s solo led off the fourth inning and he had a three-run blast in the eighth as the only Cougar to record more than one hit in the game. ASU, now 15-4, hit three of its five doubles in the fifth inning when Chip Gosewisch also hit a two-run homer. The Sun Devils also got a three-run homer by Mitch Jones and a solo by Mark Ernster in the seventh. The winning pitcher was Jon Switzer, now 3-1, in going seven of the nine innings. Junior Rangi Smart lost only his fourth match of the season after Arizona State’s Steve Blackford scored a takedown 1:46 into sudden death to win a 7-5 decision. Smart is now 17-4 on the year. With the loss, BYU falls to 10-5 on the season and Arizona State moves to 10-7-1. Tomorrow the Cougars will be in Idaho to take on Boise State, whom they defeated earlier in the season in Provo, 24-13. San Jose State (12-13, 5-7 conference) got the ball with 43 seconds left in overtime after Brigham Young's Mekeli Wesley had tied the game with a short bank shot from the right. With 10 seconds left, Trawick missed a follow shot after Michael Quinney's missed 3-pointer. Trawick got his own rebound and was fouled as he shot again. Trawick sank the first free throw and then got the second after a Brigham Young timeout. After another time out, the Cougars' Michael Vranes missed a long 3-point shot as time ran out. Quinney scored 26 points to lead all scorers and Terrance Richmond added 17 for San Jose State. Mark Bigelow lead the Cougars with 19 points, while Wesley added 15 and Vranes 14. Brigham Young (10-14, 5-7) had rallied from a 38-28 halftime deficit to lead 59-55 after two fouled shots by Bigelow with 3:55 remaining in regulation play. John Robinson, who scored all 11 of his points in the second half, started the burst with a three-point play. Thomas scored 10 of his 28 points in that eight-minute span. Mark Bigelow had 21 points and Silester Rivers added 15 for BYU (10-15, 5-8 WAC), which stayed close throughout most of the first half. The score was tied four times in the first half and the lead changed hands 10 times before the Lobos took control for good. The Cougars led 23-19 with 4:30 left in the half before New Mexico went on a 12-2 run to take a 31-26 at the half. Thomas hit two 3-pointers and Lamont Long scored four of his 21 points in that stretch. Long added 11 rebounds. The final basketball game of the regular season will be tonight at 7:00 pm in the Marriott Center when BYU faces the UTEP Miners. "We need to bounce back," said Cleveland, who plans to keep things lively by shuffling in as many as nine to 10 players. "And develop some momentum going into the WAC tournament." Tuesday, BYU will play its first WAC tournament game in Las Vegas. BYU will enter the tournament as either the 5th or 6th seed depending on tonight's outcome and the outcome of the San Jose State-San Diego State game. =============================================================== No. 1 BYU Men's Volleyball Blanks No. 2 UCLA =============================================================== See: http://www.byucougars.com/volleyball_m/results/022699.html Asserting its position as the premiere men's volleyball team in the NCAA, No. 1 BYU quickly shut out defending national champion UCLA 15-11, 15-0, 15-13 Friday at the Smith Fieldhouse. The decisive victory extends the Cougars' home winning streak to 22 and improves their record to 14-0 on the season, the longest win streak in BYU men's volleyball history. BYU has also posted a perfect 10-0 mark in league play. Led by the hitting of All-American and AVCA Player-of-the-Year candidate Ossie Antonetti, the Cougars jumped out to a 8-3 game-one lead before the Bruins were able to find their rhythm and tie the game at eight. The two teams remained neck-and-neck until 11-11, when the Cougars took off on a four-point run to close out the game, ending on a Mac Wilson block– one of a match-high seven on the night. BYU owned game two, powered by the combined hitting of Antonetti, Wilson and Steve Hinds. The Cougar offense averaged more than one point per minute to put the Bruins away in just 14 minutes. BYU's defense racked up 10 game-two blocks to the Bruins' four, holding UCLA to a -.094 hitting percentage and forcing 11 errors, while BYU hit a stellar 10-for-16 with only one error. "UCLA made some changes in the second game," said BYU head coach Carl McGown. "It really wasn't about us playing great; UCLA just had the wheels come off." In the final game of the match, BYU once again jumped out to a 9-3 lead before UCLA rallied to get within one at 14-13. They closed off the match with a UCLA hitting error in front of a fieldhouse-record 5,834 fans. "BYU is playing in peak form right now," said UCLA head coach Al Scates. "I don't think we could have in beaten them at Pauley (Pavilion) tonight." All-American Ryan Millar tied with Wilson to lead all players with seven blocks, becoming BYU's all-time blocks leader with 540. Five Cougars finished the match with double figures in kills, including Antonetti's match-high 23. Wilson connected on 15-of-20 attempts to hit a match-high 65 percent. In the debut of the Western Athletic Conference season, Thomas, a senior from Beaver, earned his second save of the year. He gave up one hit in just under two innings, struck out the tying run with two on and one out in the ninth, and halted BYU’s five-game losing streak Rex, a junior southpaw from Taylorsville, entered the game in the fifth and gave up one run and five hits through three complete innings to earn his first victory of the season. Winds aided the teams to hit 10 doubles in the slugfest. BYU’s Ryan Pond, a senior from Logan, hit his eighth homer of the season on a two-run blast in the first inning off Brian Messer. The Lobos’ David Young was the losing pitcher. Brandon Ruiz started the Cougars off early with a 15-5 major decision over Joe Beauregard. Chris Miller added a pin and Jose Enriquez notched another major decision to give BYU a 14-0 advantage but it wouldn’t be enough. Air Force scored the next nine points of the match before BYU’s Russell Brunson answered by defeating Alex Pelbath, 4-3, to make the score 17-9. Air Force then closed out the meet with three straight wins. BYU finishes out the season with a 11-7 dual meet record and Air Force improves to 5-7-1. With the loss, UTEP (16-11, 8-6) backed into the fourth Pacific Division seed in next week's WAC Tournament in Las Vegas. The Miners, who have lost three straight and were swept during their weekend trip to Utah after a four-game win streak, will play Southern Methodist in the first round. BYU and San Jose State will be the Pacific's fifth and sixth seeds in the tournament. Silester Rivers led BYU with 22 points. Will Smith paced UTEP with 22, while Brandon Wolfram added 18.
