"Come next spring, there is going to be a little light at the end of the tunnel in terms of having gone through all the scholarship imbalance," Cleveland said. "And then we'll never, ever have to deal with this again." This next season, only one new recruit was added, Fresno City College swingman Terrell Lyday. The second day of the tournament brought wind and stormy weather, but the five Cougars braved the elements and moved ever closer to what they hope will be a repeat of 1981's national championship. Competition will continue through Saturday. First-place Clemson leads BYU by a single stroke. The top 5 are: Team Score ---------------- ----- Clemson +14 BYU +15 UNLV +17 N'western +19 Georgia/Okla. A top five finish for the women is more than likely. The men's team suffered a big loss when sophomore sprinter Kenneth Andam pulled his left hamstring at the end of his qualifying 100 meters heat. Andam is not only a top 100 and 200 runner, but also an integral part of BYU's 4x100 relay team that posted the fasted qualifying time of the meet. Competition will continue through Saturday. ============================================================= BYU Poised for Highest Sears Cup Finish Ever ============================================================= See: http://CougarFan.com/teams/general/news/1999/06-03.html Boosted by a national championship season from the men's volleyball team, Brigham Young has once again bettered its position in the 1998-99 Sears Directors' Cup standings. 10 different Cougar teams have registered a combined 370 points during the current athletic year to earn a sixth-place tie with the University of Arizona. There are several schools such as #8 Duke and #14 UCLA that could make big jumps in the final standings with high finishes in the remaining sports, but for all intents and purposes, it would appear that BYU should have a top ten finish all but wrapped up. ============================================================= Women's Track Coach Rewarded for his Efforts ============================================================= See: http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=10968 Women's track and field head coach R. The remaining backs in the program, however, are anxious to silence the naysayers and prove that they can pick up the slack. Several players with at least some game experience return to lead the ground attack: Kalani Sitake, Donny Atuaia, and Andy Ord are using the summer to ready themselves for the season, and Jaron Dabney has been working out back home in Texas, preparing for his return to Cougar Stadium. ============================================================== Cougs add Syracuse to Future Schedules ============================================================== See: http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,100008445,00.html BYU has sealed a deal to meet the Syracuse Orangemen on the gridiron twice in the next three years.
