Chow has spent the last 22 years at Brigham Young University, where he has coordinated the Cougar offense since 1985, was assistant head coach, and directed the quarterbacks and wide receivers. "Norm has made an outstanding contribution to the success of our program over the years," said BYU head coach LaVell Edwards. "Norm is an extremely bright, hard-working and innovative football coach. He will definitely be a tremendous asset to the North Carolina State football program." "I met Norm Chow 20 years ago when I was at Arizona and we've been friends since," said Amato. "When you think about BYU, you think of offensive firepower, and Norm is a big factor in that reputation. He is a proven winner and has fielded an offense that can move the ball and score points. It was a great steal for us to get a man of his reputation." BYU ranked eighth nationally in passing offense last season with 324 yards per game and 13th in total offense, gaining 425 yards per game. Chow's departure from BYU marks the first change in that coaching staff since 1995 when Brian Mitchell was added to the staff as a defensive assistant. Prior to Amato's departure from Florida State, the Seminole staff had the second-longest average tenure in the nation at 15.7 years and BYU ranked third nationally (15.5 years). ==================================================== MWC Sees its Bowl Options Grow by Three ==================================================== See: http://www.sltrib.com/2000/jan/01312000/sports/22161.htm Craig Thompson, the Mountain West Conference's commissioner, liked the way the league found a bowl destination for Brigham Young last month, without a formal tie-in. The MWC again is guaranteed spots in the Liberty and Las Vegas bowls. And Thompson is not sure that a third agreement for the league is necessary, with at least three new bowls being created for 2000 -- leaving openings for practically every football team with a winning record. The possible new sites are Houston, Toronto, San Francisco and San Jose, CA. "Do we want to stay loose and maybe go to the best of those three," Thompson said, "or do we want to tie in? If all these conferences don't meet their contractual obligations, there will be additional spots open." ==================================================== Volleyball Team Competes with the Big Boys (Provo Daily Herald) ==================================================== See: http://www.heraldextra.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/6399C37ECA9E9306872568720029A96C Although this year's roster for BYU men's volleyball is substantially different than the 1999 national championship team's, the squad proved one thing during a recent road trip: They can still compete with the nation's top programs. After starting the trip with a disappointing loss to Pacific, the Cougars upset #6 Hawaii and then swept #12 Stanford, both on the opponents' home courts. "Now we know we can play with the good teams," said coach Carl McGown. "Before this trip, we didn't know that." Now 7-1 (4-1 in MPSF play) and ranked #6 in the latest USA Today / AVCA poll, BYU has since defeated Cal-State Northridge in a pair of matches last weekend at the Smith Fieldhouse. ==================================================== ESPN.com Projects BYU as a #9 Seed in NCAA Tournament (ESPN.com) ==================================================== See: http://espn.go.com/ncb/s/2000/0124/311185.html Every Monday from now until March 12, ESPN.com will make weekly predictions of which teams they think the NCAA selection committee will give berths to the men's basketball national championship tournament. Their first prediction placed BYU as a ninth seed. The Cougars would have to play in either the West (Salt Lake City and Tucson) or the Midwest (Cleveland and Minneapolis) bracket to avoid playing on Sunday. ==================================================== Luke Staley Begins Therapy after Successful ACL Surgery (BYU NewsNet) ==================================================== See: http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=7314&year=current BYU's standout freshman running back Luke Staley underwent succesfull ACL surgery last week. Staley will now undergo extensive therapy. "It will take about six months to heal," Staley said. "I spend 45 minutes to an hour strengthening the quadraceps and then it is iced." Although this injury was serious, Staley says the outlook is good. "They had to take part of my patellar tendon and use it for my ACL, but the doctor said it was one of the best surgeries he's ever done." Staley said he is looking forward to next year and is glad he came to BYU. "I'm pretty excited about my freshman year," he said. "I'm glad I was able to come and contribute." ==================================================== Wrestling Team Goes without Coach (BYU Newsnet) ==================================================== See: http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=7305&year=current BYU's wrestlers have had to learn to go without their coach in this, the sports final year at the school. Mark Schultz was recently released from the hospital, but spent the last three weeks there due to a serious case of cellulitis, a skin disease of the connective tissue. He nearly lost his left arm, and potentially, his life. Calling Schultz a great wrestler may be an understatement. In addition to being an Olympic Gold Medalist in 1984, he also has three NCAA championships at Oklahoma, two world championships, one in 1985 and 1987, and the World Cup in 1982. W.I.N. wrestling magazine named Schultz to America's All-Time Olympic Freestyle Team and said, "Schultz may have been the most physically gifted wrestler in American History. He had it all. . . strength, flexibility, quickness, and great athletic skills." Schultz came to BYU in 1991 and eight months later he and his wife were baptized into the LDS Church. Schultz said of his experience at BYU, "It's great, I've loved it, I'm kind of hoping to stay on here, maybe they could use me in the P.E. department." ==================================================== Other Articles featured at CougarFan.com ==================================================== See: http://CougarFan.com * Coaching Changes Won't Haunt BYU Football Recruiting (Deseret News) * Gooch Turns Down UA, Will Play for BYU After Mission (Arizona Daily Star) * New Offensive Boss Will Be Edwards' Call (Provo Daily Herald) * Cougs Raid Hawaii for Tailback (Provo Daily Herald) ==================================================================== Copyright 1999, CougarFan.com *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from CougarFan Insider, go to http://www.CougarFan.com/insider or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ==================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "CougarFan.com" Subject: Basketball Rankings, Stats Date: 02 Feb 2000 20:48:45 -0700 CougarFan Insider http://cougarfan.com Basketball Rankings, Stats =========================== National Rankings =========================== BYU and Opponents USA AP Sagarin's RPI* Result Today Comp. "His hard work and dedication to the program ove= r the years has more than prepared him for this opportunity. I feel extremely confident in his abilities and know he will do a great job.=94 Reynolds recently completed his 17th season as an assistant coach at BYU, serving most recently as the running backs coach. Reynolds began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at BYU from 1979-80. In 1981 he was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Snow College before taking over assistant head coaching duties at Ricks College in 1982. Reynolds returned to BYU in 1983 and has helped guide the Cougars to 15 bowl appearances and coached several players who have gone on the the NFL. Reynolds has also tutored four different 1,000-yard rushers, including Ronney Jenkins, Brian McKenzie, Jamal Willis and all-pro running back Vai Sikahema. =93I=92m grateful for the confidence and the respect Coach Edwards has sh= own in me,=94 Reynolds said. =93This is a real honor for me, not just to be = the offensive coordinator, but to work alongside one of the greatest and most well-respected coaching staffs in the country. A national recruiting service ranks the Cougars' list of signees as the best in the league, and 51st nationally. That ranking would be even better, but a couple of late-deciding key recruits who signed with the Cougs weren't included in the analysis. Danny Southwick, a quarterback from Provo and nephew of current Cougar Bret Engemann, passed up Joe Paterno's offer to play for Penn State and inked with the team. Three top running backs who can make immediate contributions were also signed in case the current Cougar backfield doesn't fully recover from injuries and other variables. Another area that the Y focused on was recruiting quality linemen and defensive backs. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D BYU Announces 2000 Football Recruiting Class (BYUCougars.com) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/19990202_ftb_rel.html When Coach LaVell Edwards announced BYU's recruiting class yesterday, he said, "In line with our goals of filling existing needs and signing the very best athletes available, we feel we have been able to accomplish a great deal in order to meet those goals," Edwards said. "We feel very good about those players who have committed to play at BYU. We have several recruits who will be able to come in here next fall and make an immediate impact." However, they are confident that they can abide by the school's Honor Code and have committed to following the standards that apply to all students at the Y. Two players who signed yesterday know Heshi Robertson from Cerritos Junior College, and they know that he was suspended last year for an Honor Code violation. "It scared me at first, with me and (Robertson) being from the same school and the same area, thinking I might go up there and make the same mistakes that he did," said cornerback Danny Phillips. "But I think I learned from his mistakes." Both Phillips and running back Brian MCdonald (yes, that's how he spells it) talked with Robertson when he was attending Cerritos during his suspension from BYU, and say that he helped put their minds at ease. "He was like, 'No, that was my fault,' " MCdonald said. "We're not looking for excuses," said junior Nathan Cooper. Tonight's game at San Diego State gives the Cougs a good chance to buck their first back-to-back losing streak of the season. The Aztecs (5-13, 0-5) are currently on a seven game skid are the league's cellar dwellars. Still, BYU isn't about to overlook SDSU just because of the expected outcome of the game. They remember all too well that they were favored to defeat Air Force last week, but were handed a five point loss. Coach Cleveland knows that Terrell Lyday's sore ankle and Michael Vranes' and Mekeli Wesley's stomach flu aren't conducive to the Cougars playing their best game. "This is a team that can ill-afford those things to happen," Cleveland said. "We have our backs against the wall," said guard Todd Christensen. "We have to win these next few games, no doubt about it. When you go in a slump, sooner or later you're going to come out of it." Cooper added, "Every team, in one way or another, goes through a slump like this. After a week which saw Wesley's elbows earn him a flagrant foul at Air Force and a technical foul two days later at New Mexico, the coach sat down and had a talk with his big man. "He has to take a high road out there. He can't react to things like that," Cleveland said. "Unfortunately, I can't control the pushing and shoving that he takes out there, but we need him to stay calm. He can't react to any situation, not the fans, not opposing players. . . Remember to include your full name and hometown. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Question from David Blanchard: My question concerns the unforeseen surplus of players the Cougs will be seeing next season. (And I'm not complaining about the phenomenal depth we will have!) As the team roster stands right now, BYU will have lost only one senior, Silester Rivers, when the season starts next year. In contrast, the team will have Daniel Bobik returning from a mission, at least five exciting recruits, and two talented and experienced walk-ons gaining eligibility in January. You are well aware of the numbers, of course. The way I am projecting it (very hypothetically), the team could have significant minutes given to three players at the 1 position, Montague, Christensen, and (Trent) Whiting, three players at the 2, Lyday, Vranes, and Cooper, two players at the 3 position, Nielsen and (Travis) Hansen, two players at the 4, Wesley and (Jacob) Chrisman, and two players at the 5, (Nate) Knight and Howard. Wow, that is a twelve player rotation! How many players are allowed to redshirt? Which of the recruits will serve a mission first? Coach Call: I think it is too early to talk about next year and how the team will shape up. We will definitely have more options next year. You forgot to mention Jesse Pinegar and Derek Dawes. There are many possible line-ups next year however, it wouldn't be fair to the players or Coach Cleveland to make comments about them. We could have one or two players red-shirt and/or serve a mission. There are too many things we don't know yet. I am just as curious as everyone else. So, I also play around with different line-ups, but we won't know for sure until next year. There are always one or two players that workout all summer and really raise their level of play. I thought Mekeli made a strong commitment to improve his individual skills this past summer and it has paid off. As a coaching staff, we want a few more players to catch on this summer and make a big commitment to the weight room and the basketball court. Obviously, there will be more of an incentive this year because of the added talent. My first two years at BYU I had to compete against Marty Haws everyday in practice. I owe a lot to him. I wouldn't have been half the player without him. He forced me to raise my skill level. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Question from Kyle Howard: It is my understanding that Trent Whiting and Nate Knight will not have scholarships next year. Is that correct? Coach Call: Nate and Trent will not be on scholarship next year. All of the scholarships have been offered to other players. It is a great situation for our team to have two talented and experienced players as walk-ons, even though they aren't really walk-ons. With a limited number of scholarships, walk-ons play a crucial role in our progress. -------------------------------------------------------------------- **Question from Jared Rounsville (Rio Rancho, NM): I know the first two recruits who really bought into your system and program were mark Bigelow and Daniel Bobik. They were both highly touted coming out of high school, and we saw the reason why with the incredible year Mark Bigelow had last year before leaving on his mission. Could you please discuss Daniel Bobik and the contribution you are expecting to receive from him upon his return? What are his strengths? What position can we expect to see him playing? Will he redshirt? What were his accomplishments in high school? Coach Call: I don't know if Daniel will red-shirt next year. It will depend on how fast he gets back into shape. He played the point guard position most of the time for his high school team. He is probably more suited for the shooting guard or the small forward in college. He could play the point because he sees the floor so well like Montague. But, he would have a little trouble on defense, guarding the quick point guard. He can shot the NBA 3-pointer with ease and he has a great mid range game like Bigelow. Daniel was the MVP of his league and voted ALL-CIF in California (All-State). It will also be difficult for Daniel to move into the line-up like Bigelow. We have better and more experienced players. Daniel won't be forced into the fire. He will have plenty of time to get his legs and strength back. We are very high on him and his potential. He is a little quicker and more athletic than Bigelow but not as tall. We really like him because he is a versatile big-guard who can really score a lot of points. ==================================================================== Copyright 1999, CougarFan.com *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from CougarFan Insider, go to http://www.CougarFan.com/insider or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ==================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "CougarFan.com" Subject: News Recap (2/11/2000) Date: 11 Feb 2000 14:33:01 -0700 CougarFan Insider http://cougarfan.com News Recap (2/11/2000) Selected articles included here. While the status of injured Utah star Hanno M=F6tt=F6l=E4 is in doubt, BY= U coach Steve Cleveland says that doesn't change how the Cougars are getting ready for Saturday night's game against the Utes. "We're preparing as if he's going to play," Cleveland said of the Mountain West Conference showdown, which will tip off at 7:00 at the Huntsman Center. Cleveland knows Utah has plenty of other weapons on the floor besides M=F6tt=F6l=E4, like forward Alex Jensen. Plus, Utah owns a 49-game homec= ourt winning streak. "It's hard to win on the road, no matter what the circumstances are," Cleveland said. "You can't get caught up in who's playing and who isn't playing." On Monday, Utah issued a press release stating that the school's medical staff is awaiting results of tests done of M=F6tt=F6l=E4's injured right = thumb and left elbow, injuries he sustained against Air Force almost two weeks ago. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D New Softball / Baseball Complex to be Named Miller Park (BYUCougars.com) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://www.byucougars.com/all/releases/20000208_ath_rel.html Brigham Young University announced Tuesday that its new softball / baseball complex will be named Miller Park in honor of Larry H. and Gail Miller, who made a significant financial contribution toward the facility. The baseball field will be named Larry H. Miller Field, and the softball field will be named Gail Miller Field. "BYU is pleased to have the Miller name prominently displayed on its campus," said BYU President Merrill J. Bateman. "Larry and Gail Miller have made many sacrifices to further athletics of a high standard in the state of Utah. This is one more example of their unselfishness benefiting thousands of people who love the sports of softball and baseball." Miller Park will feature back-to-back softball and baseball stadiums covered by a tensile-fabric structure roof, similar to the roof on the Denver airport. A press box will overlook both fields. State of the art locker rooms for players and coaches, coaches' offices, a training room, an equipment room, and a team meeting room will be situated beneath the bleachers. The stadium will also feature lights and new scoreboards. "My family and I are grateful and excited to be associated with BYU in this endeavor," Larry Miller said. "This only serves to solidify our nearly twenty-year relationship with BYU. Hopefully, this will serve not only as an improved playing facility, but also as a recruiting and development tool for BYU's baseball and softball programs." =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Trackster Fredericks Shoulders the Hope of a Nation (Deseret News) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,150011605,00.html? At the age of 32, former BYU sprinter has earned four Olympic medals, equaled only by Carl Lewis. This summer he will go to Sydney to make a bid for an unprecedented fifth, or even sixth, medal, and he hopes it will be a different color this time. But that would mark a dramatic change in what seems to be his fate. Silver is his color. Fredericks has finished second four times in four Olympic races to four different sprinters -- Linford Christie in the Barcelona 100; Michael Marsh in the Barcelona 200; Bailey in the Atlanta 100; Michael Johnson in the Atlanta 200. He finished second in the 200 at the World Track Championships in 1991 (to Johnson), 1995 (Johnson), and 1997 (Ato Boldon), his lone victory coming in 1993. That's eight silver medals and one gold medal in Olympic and world championship races. The difference between first and second is a matter of hundredths of a second, but it's much more than that in other ways. Johnson's record against Fredericks is 8-8 since 1992, but the former is a household name and a legend. The difference: Two Olympic gold medals, two world records. Aside from his athletic career, Fredericks continues to serve as a consultant for his long-time benefactor, Rossing Mining Co., which helped sponsor him in his formative years, and to work on the Frank Fredericks Foundation. The purpose of the foundation is to help young Namibians receive opportunities for athletics and education (Web site: www.fff.org.na). Eventually, Fredericks plans to expand the foundation's work to all of Africa. Though BYU has lost three of its last six games after a 12-2 start, coach Steve Cleveland isn't complaining about where his team sits at the Mountain West Conference schedule's halfway point. "If you would have told me in November that we'd be 15-5 and 4-3 in the conference, I would have been pleasantly surprised and happy to take what we have," Cleveland said. "I feel pretty good about where we're at. Hopefully, we can find a way to win four or five more games and reach some of our goals." Since the outset of the season, the Cougars' goal has been a postseason invitation, either with the NIT or NCAA Tournament. That same aim is shared by a handful of other MWC teams staging a dogfight in the standings, though there is no automatic bid to the NCAA dance for the fledgling MWC. BYU is in a third-place tie with New Mexico. Only one game separates the Cougars and Lobos from second-place UNLV (5-2), while Colorado State, Wyoming and Air Force (all 3-4) are not far behind. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Volleyball Coach McGown Aims for Career Win No. 150 (BYUCougars.com) =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D See: http://cobra.neticus.com/volleyball_m/releases/20000208_mvlb_rel.html BYU=92s all-time winningest men=92s volleyball coach, Carl McGown, will b= e gunning for his 150th career victory on Friday, Feb. 11th, as the sixth-ranked Cougars play host to eighth-ranked Loyola Marymount in the Smith Fieldhouse, beginning at 7 p.m. (MST). The fifth-ranked Cougars were buoyed last week by the return of All-American middle blocker Mac Wilson from injury, but outside hitter Casey Jennings sprained his ankle in practice and won't be available when the Trojans comes to town. "There's no way Casey will play Friday," McGown said. "Both Brad (Goldsten) and Casey pass at a high level, and Casey was serving very well, too. We'll miss that." With the 6-foot-9 Wilson back in the lineup, McGown hopes his other middles, Scott Bunker and Matt Olsen, are feeling a little pressure. New Mexico (14-11, 6-4 Mountain West) blew a 16-point second-half lead but survived when Marlon Parmer hit an eight-foot jumper in the lane with 20.3 seconds remaining for the game's final points. Wayland White scored 12 points for the Lobos, playing the third of four games in an eight-day stretch. Terrell Lyday scored 29 points for BYU (15-7, 4-5), which has lost four of its last five. Mekeli Wesley, listed as questionable after spraining an ankle at practice Tuesday, started and scored 16. Lyday scored nine points in the final four minutes and almost led the Cougars all the way back from a 58-42 deficit with 15 minutes to go. Lyday's three-point play with 52.5 seconds left cut the margin to 76-74 but BYU could do no better in the closing seconds than missed 3-point attempts by Wesley and Nathan Cooper. The Lobos gave themselves a nice cushion by shooting 60 percent (18-of-30) in the opening half. It was Long leading the way, shooting 7-of-10 in the first half on cuts to the basket that created shots for his spidery arms. New Mexico shot 50 percent (27-of-53) for the game, the third BYU opponent after Utah and Arizona to make at least half its baskets this season. Coach Call: It is against the NCAA rules to have a coach sit up above during the game and radio down plays and/or ideas. I don't know why you can do it in football and not basketball. Maybe, it is difficult to see the entire football field when you are down on the side line. The basketball court is much smaller and there are less players on the court. -------------------------- **From David Smith (Springville, Utah): Do new technologies such as the internet or satellite, make it any easier in your coaching and recruiting? Coach Call: New technologies have made it easier for basketball coaches to recruit and scout other teams. There are so many games on satellite TV that we can video tape almost every game of our opponents. But, on the other side, every team probably has all of our games. The BYU players receive a video break down of every team we play that includes every play they run plus individual tendencies of the players they will be guarding. As a coaching staff, we need to take advantage of these new technologies to keep up with other programs in the country. The Internet doesn't help do recruiting, it only speeds it up. The information about basketball recruits has always been available, but it took longer to get. College coaches would have to make ten phone calls to obtain information about a particular recruit. Now, we jump on the Internet and have five evaluations from the top recruiting experts around the country. We can obtain the home addresses, school address, team schedule, information about which colleges are interested in him, what he is looking for in a college, how he played the past summer in the all-star tournaments, how he compares to other top players around the country, and how many points he scored in his high school game last night. We still have to go recruit the players we want. There aren't very many surprises in recruiting. Everyone knows who the best players are at that moment. Sometimes a student-athlete that wasn't highly recruit becomes a great college player. People will ask, "how did the recruiter miss out on that player?" Sometimes, players improve after they enter college. A recruit might grow a couple inches during his freshman year or start lifting weights. Maybe, he realize he has a chance to a be great player, so he starts practicing basketball 3 hours a day instead of 3 hours a week. The talent level of each player is always changing. If a player improves in high school everyone knows about it, because of the Internet. We had a great recruiting class this year according to the Internet sources. ESPN ranked our recruiting class #26 in the country. We won't know for sure until two or three years from now how good our recruits will actually be. It will depend on many variables like how they work on the basketball court and in the weight room the next few years. -------------------------- From Kay Morrell: Years ago, when I was a freshman at BYU living in the dorms, there were several football players on my floor. A couple of the players were walk-ons and were not able to participate in all of the team activities, such as team meals. Aside from next year's walk-ons paying their own tuition, are there any other restrictions or limits to activities with the team? Coach Call: No, there are no other restrictions. The walk-ons on the BYU basketball team are treated like every member. They participate in every "team" function including meals. We are only allowed to travel 13 players on the road trips by the NCAA. It does mean that a "walk-on" couldn't travel, it only means that we can take 13 players regardless if they are a scholarship or a walk-on player. This year we have taken a walk-on on a road trip and left home a scholarship player. To the coaches here, there is no difference. Performance in practice and in the game is the only thing that matters. -------------------------- From David Smith (Springville, Utah): If a referee really messes up, can the league correct a bad call? Do you have a way to get rid of really bad refs? Coach Call: Every Coach in the Mountain West Conference has an opportunity to rate every referee. The best refs always do the most difficult or the most important games. Obviously, if a Coach rates an offical with a low score, the conference will limit the amount of games he does for that particular team. Good officals are very important in basketball. The refs have a tough job. I would never want to be a basketball ref at any level. It doesn't matter how good a job you do, somebody is still mad at you. After rallying from a 67-58 deficit with 9:42 remaining, the Rebels (16-6, 7-3 MWC) got two shots in the closing seconds that would have won it. Trevor Diggs' 15-foot jumper was off the mark and a follow-up tip by Kaspars Kambala bounced off the rim at the buzzer. BYU (16-7, 5-5) appeared to have the game wrapped up when Michael Vranes hit a 3-pointer with 49.5 seconds left, giving the Cougars an 80-72 lead and sending the Marriott Center crowd of 17,432 into a frenzy. But Diggs scored with 15.5 seconds left, cutting the margin to 83-79. After Lyday missed two free throws, UNLV's Donovan Stewart completed a three-point play to make it 83-82 with 8.9 seconds left. Wesley missed two free throws with 7.7 seconds on the clock, setting up UNLV for its final possession. The Rebels failed to capitalize on a big assist from New Mexico, which earlier in the day beat Utah in Albuquerque. UNLV, trailing Utah by one game in the Mountain West standings, plays in Salt Lake City on Monday night. Todd Christensen scored 15 points, Vranes had 12 and Eric Nielsen scored 11 for the Cougars. Kambala led the Rebles with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Diggs scored 21 and Dalron Johnson had 14. UNLV came into the game ranked fifth in the nation in scoring, averaging 84.2 points a game. But the problem for the Rebels was establishing any kind of defensive consistency. The Cougars, meanwhile, chased loose balls, crashed the boards for rebounds and outhustled the Rebels, who often forced shots from the perimeter instead of trying to work inside to the 6-foot-9 Kambala.
