"Edwards improved his record to 255-100-3, tying former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne for sixth place on the NCAA's career list. Edwards is retiring after 29 seasons this year; Osborne retired three years ago after 25 seasons. "The Cougars (4-5, 2-2 Mountain West) went ahead 9-7 late in the third quarter when Pochman's wobbling line-drive attempt from 48 yards struck the crossbar and bounced through the posts. "Pochman, who missed three second-half field goals during BYU's 16-15 loss to San Diego State last weekend, celebrated on the field while the normally stoic Edwards cracked a smile on the BYU sidelines. "The Cougars extended the lead to 16-7 on Marcus Whalen's 4-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and Pochman added a 42-yard field goal, this time with plenty of height, with 4:15 to play. "Tyson Smith made his third interception, picking off reserve quarterback Brandon Neill, to end a late scoring threat by the Cowboys (1-8, 0-5), who lost their sixth straight. "For a while, it seemed neither team wanted to win. It was a woeful second quarter, with each punchless offense trading fumbles and interceptions. Over a span of 1:38 late in the half, possession changed three times." =========================== Game Notes =========================== Charlie Peterson broke a BYU record of consecutive passes without an interception...and then promptly threw an interception. Tyson Smith's three interceptions tied a BYU record last recorded by Derwin Gray in 1990. BYU came into the game dead last in the nation in number of interceptions (2). Tonight, they intercepted Wyoming four times! =========================== Box Score =========================== 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total BYU 0 0 9 10 19 Wyo 0 7 0 0 7 1st Quarter: None 2nd Quarter: Wyo - TD, Malcom Floyd 13 yd Pass from Jay Stoner (Elling Kick), 14:11 3rd Quarter: BYU - TD, Charlie Peterson 5 yd Run (PAT failed), 8:11 BYU - FG, Owen Pochman 48 yd, 13:11 4th Quarter: BYU - TD, Marcus Whalen 5 yd Run (Pochman Kick), 3:39 BYU - FG, Owen Pochman 42 yd, 10:45 =========================== Statistics =========================== BYU Wyo ------- -------- First downs 18 18 Rushes-yards 40-128 36-68 Passing yards 225 169 Passes 22-34-1 19-30-4 Punts 3-43.0 7-41.3 Fumbles-lost 0-0 0-0 Penalties-yards 5-50 5-21 Time of Possession 29:46 30:14 -- PASSING -- Note: An online pass efficiency calculator can be found at: http://www.CougarFan.com/teams/football/ BYU - C Peterson 22-34-1-225 Wyoming - Stoner 14-22-3-100, Neill 5-8-1-69. -- RUSHING -- BYU - L Staley 23-88, Whalen 7-42, K Sitake 1-7, Mcdonald 2-6, C Peterson 6-minus 6, Hooks 1-minus 9 Wyoming - N Scott 9-32, Armah 10-23, Brett Ralph 2-10, Brock Ralph 2-8, Tesinsky 1-6, Swanson 1-5, Neill 5-minus 7, Stoner 6-minus 9. -- RECEIVING -- BYU - Ofahengaue 4-41, L Staley 3-78, Horton 3-21, Hooks 3-13, Jolley 2-21, Pittman 2-19, K Sitake 2-11, Snowden 2-8, Rigell 1-13 Wyoming - Mcguffey 5-52, Brock Ralph 4-47, Tesinsky 4-29, M Floyd 3-26, Brett Ralph 1-8, N Scott 1-5, Armah 1-2. =========================== Mountain West Conference Standings =========================== Conference Overall W L W L Colorado State 3 0 6 1 New Mexico 2 1 4 4 San Diego State 2 1 2 5 Air Force 3 2 5 2 Brigham Young 2 2 4 5 UNLV 2 2 4 3 Utah 1 2 2 5 Wyoming 0 5 1 8 =========================== Looking Ahead =========================== Next Game: @ Colorado State, Saturday, Nov 18, 6:00p MDT on ESPN ==================================================================== Copyright 1999, CougarFan.com *** Tell your friends to sign up! *** To subscribe to or unsubscribe from CougarFan Insider, go to http://www.CougarFan.com/insider or send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "subscribe byuinsider-text" OR "unsubscribe byuinsider-text" in the body of the message. ==================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "CougarFan.com" Subject: Correction -- Post-game: BYU 19, Wyoming 7 Date: 27 Oct 2000 10:10:15 -0600 CougarFan Insider http://cougarfan.com Correction -- Post-game: BYU 19, Wyoming 7 We included an incorrect date for the upcoming football game.
