Now a real test appears as the Cougs leave the friendly confines of LaVell Edwards Stadium and travel to California. Watch for more of Gary Crowton's playbook to open this week, hopefully catching the Golden Bears offguard. Defensively, the Cougars really started to gel last week, holding the Wolf Pack of Nevada scoreless until the third-stringers surrendered a meaningless touchdown in the fourth quarter. BYU's front seven have to be salivating after watching film on Cal's loss last week, because the Bear offensive line were beaten all day, and quarterback Kyle Boller spent a good part of the day throwing on the run. Cal is led by highly respected head coach Tom Holmoe, who was an all-conference safety for BYU in the early '80s. After winning three Super Bowls with the 49ers, Holmoe returned to Provo as a graduate assistant in 1990 and '91. He then was a defensive coach for Stanford, followed by the 49ers, before going to Cal as defensive coordinator in 1996. He replaced Steve Mariucci as head coach the next year and has been at the helm of Cal's Program ever since. With the hiring of past UCLA offensive coordinator Al Borges, this is supposed to be Holmoe's breakout year with the Golden Bears, but his team is coming off of a devastating 44-17 home loss to Illinois. They were able to move the ball well, and actually outgained the Fighting Illini in total yardage, but a bevy of turnovers made it nearly impossible for them to stay in the game. Coach Holmoe has been able to field some great defenses during his time at Cal, producing first round NFL picks Deltha O'Neal in 2000 and Andre Carter in 2001. This year's team has a defensive backfield that's heralded as the best in the PAC-10, but last week was no indication of that. Confusion reigned supreme as Illinois was able to put up 297 yards through the air. Cal's DBs are chalking the slow start up to opening-game jitters, and vow to do better against BYU. =============== Implications =============== BYU gets to see what they're really made of as they go on the road against a solid opponent. A win over Cal would start to get the Cougars a little more national attention. Cal needs to salvage some semblance of respect after last week's drubbing. Coach Holmoe would probably benefit as much as anybody by beating the Cougars, as he has vowed to lead the Golden Bears to a winning record this season or step down. =============== Players to Watch =============== BYU #7, Levi Madarieta (S) -- His first game in a Cougar uniform last week yielded this University of Washington transfer four tackles, an interception, and a reputation as a hard hitter. #8, Mike Rigell (WR) -- Besides his receiving duties, he's been a fearless punt returner this season. If Cal continues their special team blunders that plagued them last week, he could break some big ones. #55, Justin Ena (LB) -- He'll be expected to help shut down the running attack of Igber and Williams. #95, Ifo Pili (DL) -- The big guy is all he was before his mission. . . and more. Cal #7, Kyle Boller (QB) -- A highly touted freshman when he played in Provo two years ago, Boller has matured into a solid team leader. His confidence and accuracy has increased as he's developed. #14, Mark-Christian Jensen (PK) -- This product of Pleasant Grove High School wanted to go to BYU until he realized he would spend the first half of his college career standing on the sidelines watching Owen Pochman do the kicking. After leading the Golden Bears in scoring last season, he returned to Utah Valley and worked out with Matt Payne and Aaron Edmonds this past summer. #30, Joe Igber (RB) -- This junior was a bright spot for Cal last week, carrying 21 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns against Illinois. The bowling-ball shaped Hawaiian has had six 100-yard games in his career, his first coming in Provo in 1999. #49, Scott Fujita (LB) -- This senior outside linebacker has all the physical tools to move on to the NFL. =============== Records to Watch =============== BYU holds an ongoing NCAA record of 326 consecutive games without being shut out. =============== Injury Report =============== -- BYU -- Brandon Doman (QB) -- After a grade one AC sprain in his right shoulder during last week's game, he has practiced without discomfort this week and is listed at 100%. Isaac Herring (OL) -- He will suit up for tomorrow's game, but will probably not play after sustaining a sprained MCL and having to exit last week's game. Gabriel Po'u Reid (TE) -- He's doubtful after having his knee scoped following the Nevada game. Brandon Stephens (DL) -- He will play, though not fully recovered from an MCL sprain he suffered against Tulane. -- Cal -- Geoff McArthur (WR) -- After last week's loss, he put his right elbow through a window in a fit of anger, and required triceps surgery. He's out for the next three games. =============== Statistics =============== Team Statistics (National Ranking, Statistic) **May be skewed by Cal only having played one game BYU Cal Category Rank Stat Rank Stat Total Offense (yds/g) 1 666.0 37 381.0 Total Defense (yds/g) 79 397.5 68 373.0 Scoring Offense (pts/g) 1 61.0 62 17.0 Scoring Defense (pts/g) 58 21.0 92 44.0 Rushing Offense (yds/g) 6 323.0 38 167.0 Rushing Defense (yds/g) 74 189.5 32 76.0 Passing Offense (yds/g) 6 343.0 43 214.0 Passing Defense (yds/g) 60 208.0 87 297.0 Passing Defense (efficiency) 42 102.4 83 141.5 Turnover Margin 26 .5 98 -5.0 Punt Returns (yds/ret) 14 16.5 67 6.7 Kickoff Returns (yds/ret) 15 27.0 49 21.2 Net Punting (yds/punt) 42 36.6 97 24.8 Individual Statistics - Players in the Top 50 Nationally Category Player Rank Statistic BYU Rushing Luke Staley 13 133.0 yds/g Passing Efficiency Brandon Doman 8 176.7 rating Total Offense Brandon Doman 8 319.5 yds/g Receptions Reno Mahe 5 9.0 rec/g Receiving Yards Reno Mahe 28 99.5 yds/g Punt Returns Toby Christensen 8 16.7 yds/ret Mike Rigell 10 16.4 yds/ret Field Goals Matt Payne 33 .5 fg/g Scoring Luke Staley 13 15 pts/g Brian McDonald 13 15 pts/g All-Purpose Yds Luke Staley 18 168.0 yds/g Brian McDonald 30 153.5 yds/g Cal Rushing Joe Igber 19 116.0 yds/g Receptions Charon Arnold 17 6.0 rec/g Punt Returns Jemeel Powell 50 8.5 yds/ret Kickoff Returns Atari Callen 27 23.7 yds/ret Field Goals Mark Jensen 13 1.0 fg/g Scoring Joe Igber 21 12.0 pts/g All-Purpose Yds Joe Igber 34 150.0 yds/g Hypothetical Game (If the the teams played an exactly average game) **May be skewed by Cal only having played one game BYU Cal Score 53 19 Total Offense (yds) 520 389 Rushing Offense (yds) 200 178 Passing Offense (yds) 320 211 Turnovers 1 4 Fan Picks from the Fanzz Football Challenge: 89% of you picked BYU to win this week. The big question offensively for the Cougs is if the layoff has affected their timing and quick-strike ability. Judging by comments from the players and coaches, they shouldn't have any trouble getting the momentum rolling again. The Cougars have been able to move the ball quickly down the field, and are an amazing 17 of 17 from the red zone so far this season, scoring 15 TDs and 2 field goals from inside the 20 yard line, while holding opponents to 7 of 13. UNLV is in a moment of crisis after starting the season with three heart-wrenching losses to Arkansas, Northwestern, and Arizona. Back in August, the Rebels were media darlings, being picked by some writers to win the MWC and send quarterback Jason Thomas into Heisman contention. Now, with Thomas not even completing 40% of his passes, the Rebs have tailspinned into a sad state of affairs. UNLV's defense and special teams have been solid, but until they're able to spark some offense, they're not going to be able to keep up with the likes of BYU. ================= Implications ================= BYU needs to beat the Rebels convincingly or any chance of national respect will have been dashed to pieces. Another win over a winless team may not boost the Cougs much in the polls, but a loss would certainly sink them. UNLV is starting a new season with the beginning of conference play. A win against #20 BYU in front of a stadium that will be sold out for only the third time in history would go a long way toward easing the pain of their early season skid. ================= Players to Watch ================= BYU #4, Jernaro Gilford (CB) -- So far this season, opponents haven't been throwing to his side of the field very often. #11, Brandon Doman (QB) -- His ability to read UNLV's defense and make quick decisions will make all the difference for the Cougar offense on Saturday. #20, Reno Mahe (WR) -- His 12 receptions vs. Tulane were the first time in four years that a Cougar has registered in the double digits for catches. His elusiveness makes him able to turn ordinary catches into big gains. #92, Ryan Denney (DE) -- It will be interesting to watch him go to work on Saturday after UNLV's offensive tackles said he's "just average." UNLV #2, Jason Thomas (QB) -- A 6'4" 230 pound athlete, Thomas has suffered a slow start to his junior season, but he'll be looking to prove his ability against the Cougs. He's a dangerous runner if he gets around the end of the line. #6, Dominique Dorsey (RB) -- This 5'6" freshman is basically a James Dye in a red and gray uniform. He would be leading the nation with a whopping 55 yards per punt return, but with only three on the season, doesn't quite qualify for national statistics. #8, Michael Johnson (WR) -- He set an MWC record two weeks ago with 174 receiving yards against Northwestern and is leading the Rebels along with fellow receiver Troy Mason (#86). #43, James Sunia (LB) -- Currently eighth on the school's career tackle leaders list, he had missed 11 straight games with a knee injury before playing last week and getting 11 tackles. 30 more will make him UNLV's top tackler in school history. ================= Records to Watch ================= BYU holds an ongoing NCAA record of 327 consecutive games without being shut out. BYU will look to play three consecutive games without a turnover for the first time in school history. ================= Injury Report ================= BYU Ifo Pili (DL) -- He had a wisdom tooth pulled on Thursday, but says he'll be back on the field for the game. It will also be the first time he's gone without a knee brace since suffering a sprain back in August. UNLV Joe Hunter (DB) -- He's been arrested for drug possession charges and will miss at least this week's game. ================= Statistics ================= ---- Team Statistics (National Ranking, Statistic) ---- BYU UNLV Category Rank Stat Rank Stat Total Offense (yds/g) 1 606.7 69 343.7 Total Defense (yds/g) 86 402.0 50 321.7 Scoring Offense (pts/g) 1 55.3 76 19.7 Scoring Defense (pts/g) 50 19.3 88 29.7 Rushing Offense (yds/g) 3 279.7 31 177.0 Rushing Defense (yds/g) 79 166.7 51 132.0 Passing Offense (yds/g) 6 327.0 84 166.7 Passing Defense (yds/g) 88 235.7 47 189.7 Passing Defense (efficiency) 57 113.8 38 102.0 Turnover Margin 21 1.3 67 -.33 Punt Returns (yds/ret) 15 14.1 58 9.3 Kickoff Returns (yds/ret) 39 22.8 4 34.8 Net Punting (yds/punt) 35 38.1 99 31.1 ---- Individual Statistics - Players in the Top 50 Nationally ---- Category Player Rank Statistic BYU Rushing Luke Staley 27 104.3 yds/g Passing Efficiency Brandon Doman 5 185.0 rating Total Offense Brandon Doman 8 313.3 yds/g Receptions Reno Mahe 6 8.0 rec/g Receiving Yards Reno Mahe 24 87.7 yds/g Interceptions Paul Walkenhorst 14 .67 ints/g Punt Returns Mike Rigell 17 13.5 yds/ret Scoring Luke Staley 9 12.0 pts/g Brian McDonald 9 12.0 pts/g Matt Payne 34 9.3 pts/g All-Purpose Yds Luke Staley 26 147.3 yds/g UNLV Rushing Joe Haro 29 102.0 yds/g Kickoff Returns Troy Mason 40 22.8 yds/ret All-Purpose Yds Troy Mason 35 136.3 yds/g ---- Hypothetical Game ---- (If the the teams played an exactly average game) BYU UNLV Score 43 20 Total Offense (yds) 464 373 Rushing Offense (yds) 206 172 Passing Offense (yds) 258 201 Turnovers 1 3 ---- Fan Picks from the Football Challenge ---- 90% of you picked BYU to win this week.
