By 6:30 we had seg faulted. By 7:30, the CPU was fluctuating wildly between 70% and 100%, with quite a bit of 100% (it had *never* gone about 92% or so before). We were holding only 1000 clients max, where previously we'd had 1400 with few problems. Even last night, during what I would call "DALnet in Hell", dragon didn't go above 95% CPU. We saw quite a few exits with "Dead Socket" and an unusually high percentage of just "Leaving" exits, even when the CPU *wasn't* maxxed. Also, many clients were not resolving. Dragon downgraded to 4.4.10 at 8:30. I don't want to upgrade again until we have a *stable* and *efficient* ircd. Incidentally, dragon is now sucessfully upgraded, hardware-sise, to a P200. But we had better luck on the P133 with 1000 clients and dal4.4.10 than we did tonight with 1000 on the P200 with 4.4.12. -Catlin ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Catlin Subject: (dragon-oper) Re: dal4.4.12 Date: 02 Jul 1997 11:53:32 -0600 (MDT) Well, a while after downgrading to 4.4.10, dragon upgraded *again* to 4.4.12 , only one compiled without the no-spoof, which it doesn't really need anyhow. Without nospoof, it appears to be working just fine. So anyhow, I am hereby retracting the slightly nasty things I said about 4.4.12 as a whole and applying them only to the nospoof in 4.4.12. :) Catlin On Tue, 1 Jul 1997, Catlin wrote: > Dragon upgraded to 4.4.12 at about 5:00pm MDT tonight. Was she kick(banned), or killed? If it was just a kick or kickban, that's the channel, the channel ops have control there, its not our jurisdiction, channel owners and ops have complete freedom with their channels as long as it odesn't go against policy (ie warez, kiddie porn). If it was a channel, try talking to the founder. If it was the administration (ie, *** has been killed ( (reason))), it could be a misunderstanding or misinterpretation.. Also, disconnects can happen because of ping timeouts or the such, it may have just been bad timing. If you saw 'Ping Timeout' as the quit msg, or just 'Disconnected', it was probably that. Any kick or kill will have a msg, and can be traced. I know I wouldnt' have /killed for such a reason, and I don't know of anyone who would. Ms. Heil: There is nothing wrong with what your daughter did, by asking to chat, that is what the network is for. There could be several explanations why she was disconnected: 1. Ping Timeout 2. Connection reset by peer 3. Leaving All of those listed above is not our fault, it could have been the server or she hit or typed something which made her disconnect. Other possible reasons are: 1. Kill (which is used by an IRCop when the user is misbehaving) 2. Server Split (when the net splits) 3. Nuke or ICMP (A nuke is a program used to boot you off the server or even your ISP, which is outlawed on every network, and can be considered a felony) She may not have even been disconnected, she may have been kick/ban'ed from that channel by one of the ops there. If that is the case, it is not our responsibility, it is a channel matter, and an op can kick and ban whoever the op wants. In conclusion, it is not our responsibility for your daughter being 'disconnected' unless it was a kill by one of dragon.dal.net's opers. From what you say, I see no reason why she would have been kill'ed by an IRCop. Do not let this episode discourage your daughter from using DALnet. Sometimes things like this happen, and you just need to learn how to deal with them like everyone else. :) DALnet is meant to be a fun place to meet new friends from all over the globe, and DALnet's IRCops try to keep it that way, so everyone can enjoy all our network has to offer. :) If you have any more questions, let us know. Your daughter will be probably be able to get back in the channel, as long as she is not on AKICK, which I seriously doubt she is. Date: 03 Jul 1997 10:19:37 -0600 (MDT) Well, our mailing lists have been rearranged again. A couple weeks ago, I had it set up so that dragon-staff@dal.net and dragon-ircadmin@dal.net forwarded email to dragon-oper@xmission.com. This really makes it fairly simple for me to keep the list up-to-date. However, the postmasters are now refusing to point the @dal.net aliases at mailing lists. I objected a couple times, they insisted a couple times, and we ended up with dragon-staff pointing to each of us individually, and dragon-ircadmin pointing to dragon-staff. So, if you get a mail that appears to have gone to dragon-ircadmin, don't worry--you really are supposed to be getting it, and everyone else is getting it, too. Please reply to these if you get a chance, unless it's something that I specifically should answer. Please continue to cc: a copy to dragon-oper@xmission.com, or the original "To" address. With a setting you can make sure no one else may use your nickname for more than 60 seconds by that time Nickserv will remove that user from the network, some may consider it unfair but it is extremely useful. The only ways around it are to pick different nicknames which aren't registered or identifying to Nickserv and only the owner may do that as you need to know the password. In other words, come on the server again type in /nick aabb11 for example as I know it isn't registered then once the messages from Nickserv have stopped think up a nickname you like then type /msg nickserv info nickname and for nickname put in the one you thought up it'll tell you if anyone does own it or not, change to that nickname and type /msg nickserv register password you'll then own that nickname assuming you type it out properly. For further information on Nickserv you can refer to www.dal.net or log on to DALnet and type in /msg nickserv help and it will list a number of help topics. If you're refering to registering a channel on DALnet (if not registering a channel you can ignore most of the below) the description is meant to be a way of saying what your channel is about to chanserv, for instance a description could be: My channel for having fun. The proper command to register a channel could be /msg chanserv register #mychannel gooDpaSSword My channel for fun! Remember you must specify your #channelname password and description, passwords are case sensitive and don't pick anything too obvious as it's how you change all major channel settings with chanserv. You also need to be on that channel, have ops (the @ before your nickname on the channel) at the time and have a registered nickname. Don't forget Chanserv and Nickserv have built in help, to access them type /msg chanserv help for chanserv or /msg nickserv help for nickserv. Finally you also have /help available as that should allow you to access your IRC programs inbuilt help. >Sorry as i am new at this Happens to the best of us ;) Just use it fairly often, read the help files and various FAQs lurking about and you'll be able to get about with ease. Is it possible to send an EM to a user via mIRC? 2. Can we exchange audio info on a live basis? (i.e., talk, as opposed to chat) 3. Is it possible to be notified when a particular user (defined not by nick, but by his email address) signs on? 4. Is it possible to be notified when a particular user (defined not by >nick, but by his email address) signs on? No, to do that you'd have to check every person who logs onto IRC and that would result in you being lagged beyond belief ;) Even if IRC servers were to send out the information who logs on it would again lead to lag and waste a *lot* of bandwidth. >4. Why does it take so long (30-45 seconds) to get conenected to any one of >the mIRC servers? They're not mIRC servers, they're just IRC servers and the most popular windows client for IRC is mIRC. Most servers will have considerable delay on ports 6667, and 7000. If you are using dragon.dal.net, I suggest port 6665, or 6666. Simply add that to the ports list for this server, if you have it, and possibly remove 6667 and 7000 fromthe ports list. _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ | -FireMyst | DC.D f+ s(RL VR++) h++ CR a m++ d++ | | | WL++* Fr+++ L550c BF e! i++ U- | > _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ < | FireMyst's Lair: http://www.xmission.com/~dragon | - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - _ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Amity L. In order for this to look professional I've decided not to go in any existing channels but to make my own chat channel to show the viewers the interaction. the channel will be #chatstop. my problem is i need some responsible chatters in this channel. So that where I'm asking for the other admins on this networks help i need some folks but i need predictable responsible folks this program is live, the last thing i need is some jerk showing up and flooding or harassing in this channel. So if any of you can make it by at that time or have some opers you think would be workable in this matter please let me know. Would it really be wise to give an O line to everyone who just asks for one? The best thing you could do is start using help channels, by that you help people and the network, now one thing you should understand is helping is not a way to gain a status it's a reward in itself not a path to an O line. The best thing you can do is start helping people on help channels, you learn more, you get to know others and eventually you'll help a lot of people. It's not easy and it's not greatly rewarding besides receiving a thank you. If you wish to start helping by all means do so on channels like #DALnethelp and so on you can check MOTDs for a list of recommended help channels. Well hope this helps and goodluck. I don't know of any server error where this can be the case. However, keep in mind DALnet often has over 15,000 users on at one time, so finding a nick that's not taken can be difficult. I can imagine the nicks ary and zzz being taken. You're allowed to do the same with any channels you may have but of course there is a liimit to what is and isn't allowed (attacking other users on the channel etc). The best thing you can do is type /names #channelname and /msg someone with a @ before their nickname but don't include the @ when using /msg and be polite! However if they still won't let you in give it a day or two and then chances are the ban should be gone but if they're not there's not much to be done...
