It was scheduled for a March release, and I was really looking forward to it...oh well, more time to "learn" how to fly the F-16 again (Falcon 4), and lots more time to enjoy TAW. I always like to have another game/sim on the "side," (other than a flight sim) for those times that I really get pissed off after getting shot down for the X number of times. I just recently finished Half-Life.....so was hoping that Fleet Command would fill the void! One Q guys: Does anyone here have West Front from TalonSoft? I was considering this one as well.....all of the reviews that I have seen have been very positive, but it is always nice to hear from someone who has had some experience with it. I really enjoyed Steel Panthers and Panthers in the Shadows, so thought that maybe West Front might be a good one to pickup. Thanks guys. With all of the "bugs" that Falcon 4 still has, I much prefer the "solid" play of TAW. Anyway, what I would like to talk about is the control or "lack of control" that the player has over dedicated escorts (escorts and WW) attached to the strike package (player) in most sims. On numerous occasions, WW flights will engage SAM/AAA sites that pose no real threat to the strike a/c on ingress, or the escorts will chose to engage enemy CAP flights that could be easy evaded using stealth or by simply modify the played waypoints (yes, I know that you can modify WP's during the mission, but many times it is already too late to take that approach). It would be nice if we were given at least limited control over these flights. A simple "disengage/disregard current threat/target," or "rejoin formation" would be a welcomed addition. Often times escorting a/c expend precious ordnance during ingress on "non-threatening" a/c or SAM/AAA emplacements resulting in a lack of ordnance when you encounter numerous threats over the target area or on "valid" targets on egress that cannot be avoided. I have spoken briefly with DID (DID's response was very positive) and Jane's (F-15 is also very limited in this regard) about this issue, and I'm hopeful that the next generation of sims will address this often overlooked feature. They are due for release soon from 3Dfx, but The Station has posted them for use with Everquest, one of their online games. So, the cat's out of the bag, even if this is not an official release. The new drivers, Release 1.02.01 (Display Drivers: 4.11.01.0377-1.00) fix a number of things. 1152x864 resolution is now available. GTA (Grand Theft Auto) and perhaps other DOS Glide and VESA games are supported in all graphics modes. Turok2 is reported to work in Glide mode with the new drivers. I believe problems with hardware overlay mode are fixed and most if not all multi-monitor support issues were addressed. Anything else? I almost always wait for the official release, but these do appear to be legitimate reference drivers. You can get them from Everquest here or at Banshee Towers. And it ain't ever over. February 19, 1999 In an interview with Next Generation Online, Hasbro's Chief Creative Officer, Gilman Louie, made it clear that the company has no intention of abandoning Falcon 4.0 now that it's on the market. Instead, Hasbro label Microprose is pursuing a "platform strategy" for the title. The idea is fairly simple, if a departure to the same-old same-old release, patch, repeat pattern established by Microprose and other PC publishers over the years. As Louie explains it, Hasbro believes very strongly that if a game can establish itself as a premiere experience, players will stick to it even when competitors hit the market. His example is Quake II. That game has remained the primary online fragfest, despite the release of Unreal, Half-Life, Thief and other excellent actioners. It is Louie's opinion that Falcon 4.0 can be that game for sim enthusiasts and casual fliers alike. Toward this end, the company intends to make falcon4.com, the game's website, a central hub for players. As players post suggestions for updates and changes, Hasbro will provide them. Louie estimates there will be updates to the game every 4 to 6 weeks, and that continue indefinitely. As it stands, publishers generally include one or two patches in their development budgets, assuming they will need to keep a staff active for some weeks after release to address problems unveiled by mass release. To do more than patch a game once or twice is generally considered folly as countless consumers will never download a patch and, once a game is past its peak retail period, patches are unlikely to make the game any more money. Essentially, their a necessary evil from a business standpoint. Looking to Ultima Online, Louie and Hasbro are convinced there is another way. That game shows it can be feasible to continue work on a title over a year after its retail release. In Falcon's case, while updates will be free, the company will be able to charge for some of the expansions to Falcon, like tournaments or perhaps cheap expansions, like a special SAM (Surface to Air Missile) kit. For $4.95, you buy the ability to take control of a SAM battery and shoot down other gamers as they go by. These little additions will make money if, and only if, Hasbro is able to continue to build Falcon 4.0 and make it the game to own if you want to fly online. "If you provide a satisfying experience, 9 times out of 10, you'll make money. I can guarantee you that if you don't, 10 times out of 10 you won't make money," he said with a smile. Currently the game has sold 100-150,000 copies. The company's goal is to get a million Falcon 4.0's into the hands of gamers and build up the online world of combat it provides. In Falcon 4.0 there is a war ever-present in the background. We will likely falcon4.com become home to that raging war online, with Microprose offering events and more on that battlefield. Louie is certain of one thing: if Habro builds it, they will come. ******************************************************* Callsign: Dale, Warbirds - cdb- ICQ# 3351618 Home Page: http://www.inficad.com/~cdb To join the CWW (Mac) or FSCombat (PC) listserver: http://www.inficad.com/~cdb/CWW/Media/listsub.html Flight Sim Competition Ladders http://www.xmission.com/~thon/CWW/Competition/fsgc.html ******************************************************* --============_-1292581902==_ma============ Content-Type: text/enriched; charset="us-ascii" Hasbro's Falcon 4.0 Strategy http://www.next-generation.com/jsmid/news/5878.html Hasbro wants the world to know it ain't over 'til it's over. I remember it happening whenever I selected a different airbase other than the default in single mission select. I don't remember it happening quite as often in the campaign play although I'm sure it did. I remember that it did not hang at all when I installed the FS98 scenery files (it actually flew much better). In the long run I really could not pinpoint the problem and did not receive any help from Microsoft so back it went. Gus Tareq Hijazi wrote: > Can you describe the lockup? WW2 desert sims are much more fun than modern ones .... Dan - Dynamix / Sierra are finally going to get back into the W.W. II flight sim market. No, its not Aces over the Pacific. Its called Desert Fighters. It takes place in North Africa, and not only are there flyables from the German, American, and British sides, but also from the Italian. You will get to fly the Macchi 200 and 202 as well as a couple of others. There will be a host of non-flyable computer controlled aircraft from all sides, mostly bomber types. It is supposedly a hard-core sim, with accurate flight and damage modeling, and a dynamic campaign that will allow any side to win, as mission performance affects the outcome of the war. For example, sink two transports headed for Tobruk, and Rommel won't have the tanks, equipment, and supplies to hold off the British and American offensive at El Alamein. As for grafics, we know from games like Su27 that they are not everything. I downloaded one of those asciigrafic adventures "subsunk" for the c64 which I played ages ago. There's something special about those games that all the modern advanced stuff often fails to deliver. Or maybe I'm just a sentimental old fool. Anyway, back to F4 ... rob -----Original Message----- > >> >> I downloaded one of those c64 emulators yesterday (for >> nostalgic reasons :).
