From: Zivan Krisher Subject: (fscombat) FA & Monster Date: 01 Aug 1998 23:11:23 +0300 Hello all, I'm probably the only idiot flying Fighters Anthology on this list and this may be a stupid question but I'll ask. I know FA doesn't support 3Dfx, but I've bought myself a Monster 3D and was very disappointed to find out that FA can't take advantage of it. Since my 2D card is a 1MB ISA card that I can't replace because of special features it has that I won't go into now, I'd like games to use the Monster memory and speed even if they don't support 3Dfx. Is it possible to do that? Anyone know how? Thanks, Zivan. -- Zivan "Crasher" Krisher zkrisher@hatzor.org.il ICQ# 1931289 Visit my IAF History home page: http://fly.to/IAF - To unsubscribe to fscombat, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe fscombat" in the body of the message. Zivan, Nope, thats not possible. The Monster3D is only 3d(3dfx) compatible, and will not be used with 2d games or anything else. Yea, there are plenty of sims with 3dfx, or Direct3D support that you should be able to find nowadays. As Gunn has already said there is no way FA will use your monster card (short of a patch from EA, which I doubt will happen (but if they do, they had better do USNF 97 too)). . If you can get Digital Integrations F16 in Israel, that has a 3DFX patch available and works fine with the Monster card. Its available on budget in the UK, or in a compilation with Hind (also very good) and Apache (ok). It even has an Israel campaign, which is why I bought it in the first place, though the scenery is a little disappointing. The origonal release had many bugs but they are mostly fixed now. . I notice your email address includes hatzor - I was at Kibbutz Hatzor for a year in 197? . I will be out of the office for the rest of the week, so if you need any more info mail me direct today. . "The seats are being studied for potential use in U.S. aircraft," Maj. Tim Wieck, the Air Force Research Lab's (AFRL) Crew Escape Technologies program manager, told Defense Daily yesterday in a telephone interview. "Not for older aircraft--although that could be done--but for future aircraft, such as the JSF." According to Wieck, the Russian ejection seat is attractive to the U.S. military due to the system's inherent stability because of its passive, pilot-protective features--such as leg lifters and arm-and-leg restraints--that are activated during the ejection sequence to prevent limb-flail injuries due to windblast. "The windblast deflector shields vital organs and improves the airflow around the seat," he added. The first test of the Russian K-36D-3.5A ejection seat took place July 10 at Holloman AFB, N.M. The test was the first of six planned tests to be conducted under the joint Air Force/Navy evaluation program. The test schedule calls for six seats to be delivered by the Zvezda Design Bureau of Tomilino, Russia. Boeing [BA] is supporting the joint service evaluations. During the first test, the Russian ejection seat was launched at ground level while stationary. "The test went very well," Wieck said. "We're looking forward to the remaining tests which will demonstrate the seat's capabilities at adverse attitudes and very high speeds." The next test is scheduled for Aug. 7, when the seat will be launched at a speed of 600 knots. The remaining tests are scheduled to be completed by the end of September. The K-36D-3.5A is a derivative of the K-36D ejection seat that saved the lives of a MiG-29 pilot who bailed out at the Paris Air Show in 1989 and the pilots of two MiG-29s that collided over the International Air Tatoo '93 at RAF Fairford, England. Areas that will be evaluated include the K-36D-3.5A's low-speed, adverse-attitude performance characteristics. The Air Force and Navy have been evaluating the K-36D since 1993 as part of a Foreign Comparative Test (FCT) program to compare the seat's performance with U.S. ejection seats. BOEING, MAUSER, PRIMEX TEAM TO BUILD NEW GUN FOR JSF By Greg Caires Boeing [BA], Germany's Mauser, and Primex Technologies [PRMX] have teamed to build a new, 27 mm cannon that will be offered for use by Boeing and Lockheed Martin's [LMT] version of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), according to industry officials. Under the soon-to-be announced teaming agreement, Boeing will build the Mauser-designed cannon under license at Boeing's facility in Mesa, Ariz. Currently, Boeing builds 25 mm Bushmaster cannons--the primary armament of the Army's M2A3 infantry fighting vehicle--at the Mesa facility, the sources said. Primex will provide the cannon's 27 mm ammunition, a round not currently used by the U.S. military, the sources add. The new cannon will be a derivative of the Bk 27 Mauser supplied to both the Swedish Saab Gripen and the EF-2000 Eurofighter, which is built by Germany's Daimler Benz, Spain's CASA, British Aerospace and Italy's Alenia. The JSF program is a cooperative effort involving the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Britain's Royal Navy to develop an advanced, lightweight attack aircraft. The services plan to buy around 3,000 JSFs during the next two decades. Lockheed Martin, along with teammates Northrop Grumman [NOC] and British Aerospace, are competing against Boeing for the multi-billion JSF production award, which is expected in 2001. While the JSF does not currently have a requirement for a cannon, several senior military leaders have been pushing for the inclusion of a gun to backup the aircraft's missiles (Defense Daily, May 22). Other guns the military is considering for JSF include the traditional General Dynamics [GD] M61A1 20 mm cannon now carried by the Air Force's F-15 and F-16 fighters and the Navy's F/A-18 Hornet attack jets. --------------------------------------------- Aldo Spadoni Advanced Projects Manager Engineering Visualization Resource (EVR) N430/XA Northrop Grumman MASD Advanced Systems & Technology Tel: 562-942-4319 Fax: 562-948-9485 Aldo_Spadoni@mail.northgrum.com - To unsubscribe to fscombat, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe fscombat" in the body of the message. They originally designed the Falcon without a gun and then later put it in. As an old load toad, working on that thing was a pain in the 6 o'clock. You had to dismantle the plane to work on it. The drum was on one side of the pilot and the gun was on the other. The feed chute runs right behind his head. If you have a slow burning round cook off, it's like a grenade right behind the pilot. (Happens, you should see what it does to the belt.) And for such a small round capacity, too.... On Tue, 4 Aug 1998, Neko wrote: > They do this with every jet. Ahhhh, yes, you must give us a review once you've got a couple of trap attempts ;) You know me; I'd love to see a good Hornet sim! Looking for the realism in catapault takeoffs and traps aboard ship...of course. Although with the F-18's automatic take-off and landing modes, it'd be more fun flyin' "stick-n-rudder" ;) -Gunn ______________________________________________________________ "Flight Simulator - To accurately replicate the physics of flying a particular aircraft and the surroundings in which it flies". Have a nice day -------------------------------------------------------------------------- DEFECTOR: RUSSIA MAY HAVE POSITIONED NUCLEAR BOMBS IN U.S. By Sheila Foote A defector from an elite military intelligence unit of the former Soviet Union told Congress yesterday that it is possible that Russia has smuggled nuclear suitcase bombs into the U.S. to use in the event of war. Stanislav Lunev, a former colonel who defected in early 1992 from the GRU, or Russian Intelligence Agency, testified before the House National Security Committee (HNSC). He is the highest ranking defector ever from the GRU. Lunev is the author of a new book, Through the Eyes of the Enemy, that states that the Russian military and intelligence organizations still regard the U.S. as a threat and continue to plan for World War III scenarios in which Russia and the U.S. oppose each other. Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.), who presided over the hearing, called for the administration to do more to ensure the U.S. is prepared for this threat from Russia. Specifically, Weldon, who is the chairman of the HNSC's research and development panel, promoted the idea of spending more money on a Wide Area Tracking System intended to detect smuggled nuclear devices. The technology is under development at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. "Given the shocking possibility that Russian nuclear suitcase bombs may even now be smuggled into the United States, I hope the Clinton administration reverses its neglect of the experimental WATS" system, Weldon said. Because Lunev has had his identity altered under the federal witness protection program, he testified yesterday behind a screen that blocked observers from viewing his face. Lunev said he worked as a spy inside the United States from 1988 until early 1992, under cover of a Tass newspaper correspondent. During that time, he said, one of his responsibilities was to identify possible places in the Washington area for placement of tactical nuclear bombs. Lunev said he decided to write the book revealing Russian secrets after he was diagnosed with cancer. He indicated that he now has less reason to fear retribution from his former colleagues. "If I am to be killed, it will only be in advance of the cancer," he said. "I have nothing to lose right now." The Soviet Union developed portable nuclear tactical devices for its special operations forces, Lunev said. The devices are small enough to fit in a suitcase, though Lunev said it would be a "very heavy" case. Most likely, Lunev said, Russian agents would seek to transport the devices in a way that would not attract attention--using, for example, a carrier that looked like a picnic basket or golf bag. Russia most likely would smuggle the devices into the United States using the same type of methods that drug runners use, Lunev said. If these simpler methods failed, Russia could deliver the technology by air, propelling a package from a reconnaissance plane to a remote location for later retrieval by Russian agents, or by sea, using an oceanographic research ship to deliver the equipment to a sparsely populated coastline. Under questioning, Lunev said he does not know if Russia has positioned portable nuclear weapons are in the United States. "It is possible that they are here because they are not inside Russia," he said. Suitcase Weapons A congressional delegation that Weldon led to Russia first learned in May 1997 that Russia had developed nuclear suitcase weapons and that dozens of them are missing. Lunev said the U.S. is underestimating the threat that Russia poses today. Not only does Russia still seek to learn U.S. military secrets, but it is actively engaged in industrial espionage, he said. "Russian intelligence activity against this country is much more active than it was in the time of the former Soviet Union's existence," Lunev said. He suggested that Russia still has plans to eliminate U.S. civilian leaders and the military chain of command in event of war. Lunev also stated that the Russian government is heavily infiltrated by the Russian mafia. "The government is penetrated by Russian mafia so deeply it was possible a few years ago to say the Russian government is simply a criminal state," he said. Rep. Owen Pickett (D-Va.) asked how Lunev could have reliable information about the plans of the Russian military and intelligence organizations, given that he defected six years ago. Lunev replied that he maintains "my own contacts with some people." Pickett also suggested that maintaining portable nuclear devices in the U.S. would be difficult because it the devices would require regular maintenance and possible replacement every few months. This activity could compromise their location, Pickett said. - To unsubscribe to fscombat, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe fscombat" in the body of the message. But being a training sq it lacks a very necessary element....instructors. I wanted to find out of any of you are interested in being one of the instructors. The squadron will be a training sq and will include a variety of options, some new and some older. But hopefully all good. First, the page.... http://www.inficad.com/~cdb/3FW/555.html The actual number of instructors will obviously depend on who's interested and who qualifies. Anyone interested will be vetted by Lanny Erdos and Cameron Ullyot. In addition, Lanny will fill a new position for a squadron. He will be the XO for offline material. He will be in charge of an ftp directory that initially will consist of sub directories for reference documents and mission files. This can be expanded as Lanny sees fit and to meet expressed needs. Also, anyone can upload files to be added. If that is done, please drop me a line so Lanny or I can move it to it's directory ftp://shelby.ucr.edu/pub/MFS/Janes/F15 ftp://shelby.ucr.edu/pub/MFS/incoming As for expressing needs, the squadron will have a message board based on the same script the official Jane's F15 message board uses. And this message board will be the same message board that has been added to the F15 Competition ladder. The ladder takes care of most everything....it immediately processes your joining the ladder within 30 secs. And when you challenge someone, it immediately mails notice of a challenge to the person challenging and the person challenged. And when the score is entered, the ladder immediately sends out notificatiosn and posts the score to the ladder. The only things a person needs to do is enter the info and reload the web page for it to display There will be no requirement to be on IRC-ICQ-Kali. Instead, the persons that become instructors will specify where they can be found and a time frame they are usually there. And the instructors will help work out the details of the squadron and a ROE. At some point, the training sq will cease to be a training sq and become an independent, full fledged sq. So let me know if you're interested Dale ******************************************************* Callsign: Dale, Warbirds - cdb- ICQ# 3351618 Home Page: http://www.inficad.com/~cdb To join the CWW (Mac) or FSCombat (PC) listserver: http://www.inficad.com/~cdb/CWW/Media/listsub.html IRC channels #macflightsims - #fscombat, all on Dalnet http://www.tcsn.net/jardine/macflightsims http://www.inficad.com/~cdb/CWW/Services/irc.html Flight Sim Competition Ladders http://www.xmission.com/~thon/CWW/Competition/fsgc.html ******************************************************* - To unsubscribe to fscombat, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe fscombat" in the body of the message. In an interview, Air Force Chief Scientist Daniel Hastings said that the UCAV program, which is exploring the use of autonomous aerial vehicles to carry out missions like suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) or precision strike, faces several serious technical hurdles before it will be successful. The major issue is how to ensure that a lethally-armed UCAV is under the control of its operators while still allowing it to adapt to changing conditions during the mission. "Command and control of an autonomous vehicle carrying lethal force, that's number one," Hastings said. "If you can't work out that sort of issue, then it won't work." Other UCAV program challenges include ensuring weapon lethality and safety, and improving the operator interface. Another major issue is driving down cost to provide a truly affordable capability. "So far, these [UAVs] have not proven to be all that cheap," Hastings said. Still, the service is moving forward quickly to field an Advanced Technology Concept Demonstrator. Contracts were awarded to four companies, including Lockheed Martin [LMT], Boeing [BA], Raytheon [RTNA/RTNB] and Northrop Grumman [NOC] in April to carry out a 10-month program to design and build a SEAD/strike UCAV demonstrator. The service remains dedicated to the concept, despite the technical and operational difficulties. "We don't know if we can do it, but we're going to try," Hastings said. - To unsubscribe to fscombat, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe fscombat" in the body of the message. These msg boards are not meant to compete with the GSC message board, but rather supplement it as each ladder focuses on a specific Hornet version. General discussion and questions are acceptable. But I think what will develop is questions from and for the online user who is looking to become a more efficent killer and all around card carrying aerial assassin :) The rules will be courtesy and common sense. As long as those are observed, anything can be expressed. I want to thank Jon Blum for his generous assistance in contributing to getting the boards online. There are so many to choose from... I have Janes F15, Longbow 2 & USNF97 and they're good so Janes FL should be good but then I have Flight Unlimited I & II, and they're very good - so Flight Combat should be very good. And then there's Fighter Duel II, SDOE, EAW & more I forget just now. And then there is MS Combat Sim - I have FlightSim98 and its good in parts, annoying in others - but Combat Sim will be 'open architecture' meaning we can import user designed aircraft & sceneries (theatres). This is very important to European users who don't just want to fly the mainstream USAAF aircraft (:^). As an example there is a complete D-Day scenery just released (freeware) for FlightSim 98. One thing I am looking for is co-operation between wingmen, even if just 'look behind you'! Hopefully there will be a few more demos to enable us to choose wisely, but I think for me it will be MS Combat Sim and maybe one other. In version 5.0 you could only fly to airports in the, what was it, 4 regions that came with the sim unless you got an add-on senery disk. I'm thinking about getting FS98 just so I can fly the Heavies, I've got my eye on a 747 mainly because I read it came with a good manual. When I flew Microposes B-17 a long time ago I fell in love with the way it flew, you can feel the weight. I'd have to get FS98 in order to get the 747 add-on but want to find out about the airports that come with FS98 before I get it. In version 5.0 you could only fly to FS98 comes with most of the original 'add-on' sceneries included, e.g Paris, Japan, Hawaii, Caribbean etc, plus many smaller detailed areas such as London. Also many single airports dotted around with points of interest (Pyramids etc) and Navaids (VORs NDBs). I believe there is a file circulating on the web listing all the FS98 airports, try www.avsim.com. Most missing areas can be filled-in from the huge number of freeware sceneries available on the web, some of them better than the MS scenery. I've finished MAWGUI Version 1.00 and it's available for download now at http://web.ukonline.co.uk/d.cowan/ It basically eliminates any need for batch files and text file editing in MAW. New campaigns can be created effortlessly. I even worked out how to write a help file ;) Please try it out if you're still playing F22 ADF -- and even if you aren't! Date: 24 Aug 1998 20:31:54 +1200 Recently I had the chance to travel to the United States of America to go to a family wedding in Two Harbours, Minnesota. The trip its self was great, the people where we stayed were friendly and made me and my family all at home. There was also plenty of sites to see and that Lake Superior ROCKS!!!!! It was also nice to have pleasant weather and daylight savings at the time of year that in New Zealand is the middle of the winter. So yeah, 80F days were really nice. What did we see? Well we visited the Lake Walk in Duluth, went on a lake cruise, visited the Depot and the William A Irvin, went to Lutsen and had a ride on the Luge and Gondola's and many more things I wont bother you about. I also did one of the things that I have always wanted to do, and that was to go to a Baseball game. Granted it was only a minor league game between Duluth and Saint Paul (which Duluth won 2- 1) but it was a totally magnificent experience:) The only downer of the entire holiday was having to come home to pay off the VISA card:) Things I like about America and wish New Zealand would copy: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. National Pride - I want to see flags outside every house and I want to sing my GOD DAMNED NATIONAL ANTHEM at every possible chance!! 2. The RED GREEN Show - Please TVNZ get this show. It was totally funny, so unlike most American comedy shows:) 3. Lake Superior - I want a Lake Superior in New Zealand. I want the Government to start excavating Lake Toupo immediately:) 4. Squrils - These little critters were so cute, I want them imported immediately:) 5. Mr Rogers Neighbourhood - Not so educational but Mr McFeely reminded me of a dirty old man or some kind of child molesterer:) 6. Double laned Highways - So I can get to work 5 minutes faster. 7. Shopping Malls - You people dont realise just how lucky you are to have access to cheap quality merchandise. 8. Baseball and Hot Dogs - I loved the game so much Im gonna start a New Zealand league:) 9. Theme Parks - I want a real theme park with a real rollercoaster in New Zealand. Even the Mall of America's coaster puts our Rainbows End coaster to shame:) Things I dont want to see copied in New Zealand: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Traffic Congestion - Us kiwi's dont realise just how lucky we are untill we fly over the highways of LA. For as far as the eye could see cars were backed up and werent moving anywhere fast, amd this was at 8pm! 2. Pollution from cars - says it all. 3. Lack of interest in the indigenous people - I was dissappointed in just how hard it was to find information on the local Indian people. We visited a place called Gooseberry Falls and the Ranger station had absolutely nothing about the Indians in it. It was so opposite what we have here in New Zealand. We really dont appreciate just how much more advanced we really are when it comes to issues of race and pride in ones culture. 4. Enemies - Its lucky you Americans do a good job at pissing the Islamic fundies off or they would try to pick on us Kiwi's :) 5. Huge shopping malls - Downtown Duluth and Minneapolis-St Paul were ghost towns because of these malls. Makes you wonder where the town planners brains are when the approve these "wonder malls" to be built. Yes people, god bless America. Home of apple pie and Mr Rogers Neibourhood:) Regards Mailman ps. Now available is a ladder for IMagic's iF-22 flight sim for PC users. But the ladders are not just about PC flight sims. It is dedicated to flight sims, Mac & PC. And they are dedicated to a flight sim community. The CWW ladders are fully automated with a cgi script instantly handling all the routine matters of accepting and mailing out challenges. Posting scores is also done automatically, all that you have to do to see a change after entering a score is reload the page. All this is required is to take two minutes and sign up by using the automated "add member" page where you enter the handle you want, your e-mail address and the password you want. As an option, if you belong to a squadron, you can select from the available choices to have your squadron listed with your entry. And squadrons can be added to the available selections by a simple editing process done by the ladder administrators By listing your squadron, two things happen. 1) If a URL for the squadron has been provided, there is a link created directly from your listing on the ladder page to your squadron 2) In addition to your personal standing, there is Squadron score page that takes it's stats directly from the list standings to rank the squadrons by ALL it's members achievements. One person can pull it up....or down. But to get to the top requires the squadron to pull together. The operation of the ladder is simple and straight forward.... After you register and listed on the ladder, you can challenge or be challenged by anyone. Once a challenge has been issed, the ladder mails both parties and notifies them of the challenge. At that point, it is up to the people involved to arrange to get together and fly the match. Ladders vary, but a challenge must be completed within 14 to 30 days before a default judgement is automatically awarded. Matches can be cleared by mutual agreement prior to the scheduled completion (or with the help of a ladder administrator) if scheduling difficulties arise. Once a match is completed, the loser of the match must use their password to enter the score on the results page. The ladders requires only a couple minutes here and there to make entries with results available just as quickly. No more mailing stuff around and waiting a day or two for replies or results. And new ladders are being all the time. And the ladder does have a set of operating rules to be found on the "about" page linked to each ladder. The ladder does have active monitoring to keep things in good shape and to repair mistakes. All it takes to remedy a mistake is to e-mail the ladder administrators. Each ladder also has it's own message board (fully automated) where the only rules are courtesy and common sense. Beyond that, anything relating to flight sims can be discussed although due the number of general flight simm message boards, general and specific, I would imagine the material would relate to the specific flight sim involved and/or the ladder itself. The ladders do offer some minor supplemental areas of interest that can be found on any of the ladders. Each ladder has an identical layout and functions. Currently, ladders offered are: GSC Hornet 2.x, 3.x and Korea (Mac & PC) Skyfighters (Mac) Bullseye Flying Circus (Mac) Warbirds H2H (Mac/PC) Red Baron II (PC) F15 (PC) Future ladders: Falcon 4 Screaming Demons Confirmed Kill F22ADF ******************************************************* Callsign: Dale, Warbirds - cdb- ICQ# 3351618 Home Page: http://www.inficad.com/~cdb To join the CWW (Mac) or FSCombat (PC) listserver: http://www.inficad.com/~cdb/CWW/Media/listsub.html IRC channels #macflightsims - #fscombat, all on Dalnet http://www.tcsn.net/jardine/macflightsims http://www.inficad.com/~cdb/CWW/Services/irc.html Flight Sim Competition Ladders http://www.xmission.com/~thon/CWW/Competition/fsgc.html ******************************************************* - To unsubscribe to fscombat, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe fscombat" in the body of the message. That may not be "politicly or morally correct", but it would be a sure way of stopping the worry- from that area. > >Looks like future flight sims are going to have to be on stopping terrorists, as opposed >to nasty governments. And it's officially open for business This squadron is not meant to be a traditional squadron. It is not looking to attract the people that already know how to fly F15 and are good at it. It is meant to attract and train the F15 rookie in order to build a broader competition and interest base. The squadron will have two XO's, one for online and one for offline F15 activities. The online XO will coordinate the training of the squadron rookies and keep track of their progress on the squadron only competition ladder. He will also generate a squadron status report and all the little things that an online squadron would think needs done. The online XO will be Richard "Fighter" Majak The offline XO is something new to flight sim squadrons. A lot of squadrons have someone that does something like it, but it's not a dedicated position with the resources that the Eagle Lords offline XO will have. The offline XO will be uploading text and mission files to a general public access ftp site that anyone will be able to download. This site also accepts uploads from anyone interested in contributing a file (proper credit will be given). This is a site with not only F15 material, but material from most all flight sims. It is a very large site. Offline XO will be Lanny "Hornet1" Erdos The squadron page will be linked to the library and mission files that Lanny is building up. It will also be linked to the squadron only competition ladder and message board (both fully automated using cgi scripts). Both the squadron ladder and squadron message board will be password accessible only. And to the CWW Air War College page for flight sim intruction purposes. On the squadron page is a link to the squadron "enlistment" form. It is fully automated, all you have to do to join is fill it out and submit it. At a future date, when training is done, the Eagle Lords will strike the training part of it's mandate and become an "active duty" F15 squadron and a new training squadron will be formed under the auspices of the 3rd Fighter Wing and the whole cycle will begin again. Here is the truth about the first powered flight: the first man was a Brazilian named Santos Dumont. I took a fragment about him from a site (www.mat.ufrgs.br/~rudnei/FAB/english.html): "In 1906, Santos-Dumont took the cowling of its airship n.14 and added to it it to a fuselage and biplain wings, whose cellular structures remembered the pipes that still today are found in Japan. The engine, a Antoinette V8 of 24 CV of power, was installed to the front of the wings, turning a propeller helix;the airplane, called 14-bis (had to the number of the airship of which it descended), flied with the tail to the front. The spread of the wings was of 12 meters and the fuselage had 10 meters, being equipped with a three-wheel landing gear. Santos-Dumont undertook some tests with the 14-bis, through a system of handles and sheaves and an inclined plan, in which tested the driven by power of the airplane. Here (jpg pic w/the plane that I did not send) we see plus an original fact of the aeronaut; it constructed what it can be called first simulator of flight of history. The 21 of August of 1906, Santos-Dumont carried through the first attempt of flight; badly-occurred, given to little power of the engine of the 14-bis. In day 13 of September, having reequipped the 14-bis with an engine of 40 CV or 50 CV, gotten through the construction future of airplanes Louis Breguet, Santos-Dumont carried through the first flight, of 7 or 13 meters (according to different versions), which culminated with a violent landing, in which the helix and the landing gear had been damaged. The historical flight of Santos-Dumont in the 14-bis in Bagatelle. In day 23 of October, Santos-Dumont al1cou flight of the field of Bagatelle, in the presence of a multitude and of representatives of the Flying club of France. For its proper motor ways (!!!!!!!), the 14-bis rolled for 100 meters and raised flight, having covered 60 meters in 7 seconds, in a flight leveled to few meters of the ground. With this fact, Santos-Dumont got 3.000 Francs of the Archdeacon prize, created in July of 1906 for the American Ernest Archdeacon, to the first aeronaut who obtained for more than to fly 25 meters in a leveled flight. The 12 of November of 1906, Santos-Dumont still more improved the performance of the 14-bis and its ability in piloting it, when carrying through some flights always increasing in the distance covered, culminating with a flight of 21.5 seconds, a distance of 5 or 6 meters of the ground, covering 220 meters to 41 an average speed of Km/h. Without a doubt, that primordial dream of the Man - to fly free as the birds - became reality in that day, for the facts of the Santos-Dumont Brazilian." I know, I know...FSCOMBAT means Combat Sims.....but the honor of Brazil was being challenged! :-) That's it guys! Out...... Similar squadron names serve >no one's best interest and >only confuse those that might want to join. The CWW will gladly >offer >assistance to those wishing to form a squadron. Jon is doing this because of a complaint where someone else came along and used virtually the same squadron name without bothering to ask or check about it's use. As Jon notes, it is in no one's best interest to have identical or near identical squadron names because of the confusion it can cause. In order to help this process, I will be resurrecting the CWW page that lists all the known squadrons so that there can be no confusion about what is taken and who is using it for what. In addition to this, the CWW Competition Ladders will list squadron designations on a first come, first server basis. A 2nd identical or near identical squadron designation will not be provided to select from. One of the member organizations of the CWW, the 1st Cyber Marine Air Wing, has a policy that no squadron can join (or remain) CMAW without 6 active members without special dispensation for low interest areas such as Asia. This is done because otherwise there would be a ton of 1 and 2 person squadrons that could not last. The squadrons are done for relaxation. But that doesn't mean what is done is responsibility free. Squadron names will be on first come, first serve basis. You can be as creative as you want. The reason you don't see much about it is because they were working in obscurity , no one would believe there claims. They wrote the American government but each time they were rebuffed on the grounds that the Government had no interest in a machine that did not exist. They also wrote England and France with the same results. They then quite all flying and experiments for the next two years. Given that Dumonts Machine was virtually a powered box-kite with no controls worth speaking of this pioneering effort could hardly be called true, controlled flight. In 1908, prompted by the claims made by European aviators, about flights that were only lasting 1,000 yds, The Wright brothers decided to enter the lists once again. Wilbur came to Europe, while Orville attempted once again to interest the US Government, His best flights lasted for periods of around 2 1/2 hours, whereas the best of the Europen pilots had still to break the 30-min. barrier. L'eon Delagrange put it perfectly: "Well, we have been beaten. You can't see the LSO but he's there talking to you, according to manual "wind" is modeled and on carrier landings. Graphics are ok, nothing ground breaking but acceptable. Oh yea, you are graded on each landing. iF18 ain't EF2000 or Falcon4 but i'll give them a chance. There are things in this sim I haven't seen modeled in any others. Two campaigns as far as I see.I don't know if you can chose the aircraft but you can create an AirWing/Squadron and all pilots. They rise in rank as you do. You can damage your landing gear if you don't land properly. Day/Night operations. Big fat meatball when ondeck to your left when in cockpit. Sorry but haven't done many landings yet so no comment. Just try staying on course as you come in for your approach and watch your speed! If you are underspeed to much and push up the throttles to increase, you could be in trouble as spoolup time and sink rate take affect not to mention the winds blowing you around at the same time eating away your speed and alt! Installation, OK. Manual, Good Flight model, challenging. As William said, it's easy to get into nasty spins. The spin control switch won't help you much unless you've got a lot of altitude and time to fight it. Engine spool-up time does take a while. Sink rate is nicely modelled. An Immelman is about impossible with heavy loadout. Traps are medium-difficult: harder than in Graphsim's Hornet (which feels very gamey compared with this flight model), but not as tough as in Fleet Defender. You can be offline, sinking too fast, speed high, or getting a wave-off from the LSO and still come down OK. Cockpit and avionics are excellent. As good as F-15 in almost all departments, and better in some (the side control panels have functioning buttons (there's an engine switch, for example), and you can enlarge the DDI's to full screen, which you can't in F-15. RADAR, RHW, FLIR and weapons seem to be well modelled. The AMRAAM is not a superweapon. Graphics and framerate on my P266/Monster I were not very good. Framerate was minimally acceptable -- really took away fluidity from the flight model, no sense of inertia as in F-15. I thought graphics were pretty poor. Explosions and aircraft exteriors are a joke, they're so bad. It's only OK if you happy stying inside the aircraft and not looking much at the world outside. The "clouds" are bar none the worst I've ever seen. Loading times are extremely slow -- about 2 min. to load up the game and at least 1 min. to load a mission. The interface is OK, and the campaign and mission planning features look very good, but I didn't use them much. I gave the sim 6-8 hours before taking it back to EBoutique. It just wasn't good enough in view of the many promising sims due in the next 6 months. After I shut off iF/A-18E CSF for the last time, I booted up last winter's alpha of Falcon4. With all of its shortcomings, including the somewhat chunky framerate, that alpha was more fun, I thought, than iMagic's latest. So I would say take a pass on iF/A-18E, at least until DI's Super Hornet comes out for comparison, even if you're dying for a new carrier sim. And remember that Flanker 2.0 is supposed to have carrier ops. I just can't have respect for a product that, at this point in time, asks me to pay good money for "clouds," "explosions," are aircraft that look as bad as these, or for a sim that loads and plays as if it were running on a P-90. Date: 31 Aug 1998 19:22:42 +0100 Is it just me, or do I get the feeling that MicroProse have leapt in a bit too deep with Falcon 4.0, which perhaps is much of what led to their demise? The sim -- if it had stuck to its original features -- would have been released about two years ago. However, MicroProse seem to add extra things to Falcon 4.0 each time a new flight sim hits the market -- just to make sure it's the ULTIMATE flight sim. I have no doubt that Falcon 4.0 will be truly superb, but I can't help but feel that they'd have been better off releasing what they originally intended to do about a year or so ago, and then started work on an upgrade or Falcon 5.0 or something -- like most other companies do. As it happens, Falcon 4.0 is widely acclaimed as "the best flight sim ever", and it's not even out yet. Why do the managers insist on upgrading the specifications, telling people what it will be like, and therefore forcing the release date a few more months back? Well now that Hasbro have bought out MicroProse (or are about to), perhaps these managers will be kicked out, and the programmers will be given realistic targets, and finally something to show for their efforts! Sadly, I've heard that Hasbro plan to make MicroProse help with products for the N64 -- so the chances of a Falcon 5.0 or any more decent MPS games are slim -- Falcon 64 anyone?
