From: Zivan Krisher Subject: (fscombat) thorough IAF review Date: 01 Oct 1998 11:16:37 +0200 Hello all, here's an excellent 3 part review of jane's IAF, I think this guy covers just ab about every possible aspect of the sim. http://www.pcme.com/strike/iaf/iaf1.htm I love these reviews, much better than walking into a store and trying to decide what to buy by looking at the box. I've got too many CD-ROMs here with games that were a big disappointment when I got home. I heard people talking about P II 300s and 16MB screen cards to run this game. if the game isn't considerebly heavier than the demo I'll run it just fine. Flight model / feelings The flight model seems quite good, if you consider I never flew a real F18E ; the inertia is well modeled, and the thrust/fuel consomption curve seems correct ; the plane flies on 6-degree of freedom , and reacts correctly to stall / hard stick input. When in a spin, it's really hard to get it level aand the spin correcter tool helps . 2. Avionics The avionics look almost as good as H3/K ; almost everything is functionnal, from engine start crank to UFD keyboard. The moving map is really nice, too. The AA radar includes VS, TWS, RWS and Boresight modes ; the AG radar includes only a raw mapping and targeting mode. This is a negative point when comparing to H3/K. The autopilot is _the_ nice touch : just like the real beast, it can be programmed in AttHld, AltHld, HdgHld, Course, Waypoint, Cruise or Approach throttle. 3. Carrier ops From the little I've flown, the carrier ops seem quite realistic, as the procedure are almost like in reality : radio calls, marshalling point, The LSO waves you off quite quick if you do call the ball to late. The landing itself is very hard (as in real life IMHO) and the plane glides like a real one (not as in H3/K) Remark : there is a Mode1/Mode2 approach and landing autopilot mode for lazy pilots or beginners (Mode2 is very good for learning) 4. Graphics The big bad point ; graphics are quite nice when talking about objects (carrier, planes, buildings) but the lanscape itself is really awful ; as soon as you are 'feet dry' - when you leave the sea (which is nicely painted) - you see the land, or should I say : an ugly patchwork of square textures roughly glued each to the other ... awful. The plane itself is well painted, control surfaces are animated, very few lighting effects if at all. I didn't really verify but I think the radars, SAMs etc. are 'dead': they don't move. 5. Gameplay All the interface is beautiful, animated shots of a naval base/carrier deck and rooms ; I love it. The mission planning seems complex, and the campaigns are dynamic ; the generated missions seems realistic (not like H3/K where you took of at 10kmfrom your target and 500m from a SA-10) and very complex (escort flights, weasels, several packages in the air at the same time) The ships are moving but not rolling nor pitching. 6. AI The AI seems quite good even if I didn't test them completely (I only used Green ennemy, which is 2 of 5 levels, to be able to fly the bird first ;-) ; the AI planes evade incoming missiles, break combat when they are loosing terrain, _seem_ to have team tactics... so good AI, even if not as good as Flanker. 7. Weapons I didn't really test the weapons except for the A2A missiles ; the AMRAAM is strangely modeled, it often misses its target (I don't know if it's realistic, but considering that the target is making break over break and pumping chaff, it might be realistic) ; the sounds (lock, 9X growl,...) are _very_ nice. iF18 manages the weapon drag very well, e.g. a -light- rocket pod drags very much more than a good old -very heavy- Mk84, which is more aerodynamic. 8. Performances I've got a p200 with a Monster 3D (Voodoo 1) running Windows 98 ; the game runs quite well (maybe 15fps?) at 800x600 (it can be ran at up to 1024x768) with all details except clouds. The interface is quite slow (huge time to load) and you'll have to defrag your HDD to accelerate it. 9. Multiplayer I didn't test, sorry ; from the manual you can play as teams, using your own radio frequencies to communicate (text only). 0. You came to what would be a helmet banging stop the instant your stick came back to center from a roll. I don't think ailerons move that fast. Does that effect show in the full version of the game also? How does iF-18 compare with Hornet Korea? HK's carrier traps are pretty good if you truly try to stay on the ball. The problem comes at the landing, any old slam on the deck short of a ramp strike is satisfactory. You could even do it with just wheel brakes. And you didn't need a catapult to take off from the carrier either. Other than that, HK is pretty good. Another good thing was that without 3Dfx, the game still looked almost as good as when 3Dfx was turned on. > ---------- > From: its.pierron@nomura.co.uk[SMTP:its.pierron@nomura.co.uk] > Reply To: flanker@wlv.ac.uk > Sent: Wednesday, October 07, 1998 2:55 AM > To: flanker@wlv.ac.uk > Subject: Re: flanker Spending your time till Flanker 2 > > As I said, I didn't try it ; moreover, I never flew a real F16 > (or > maybe in my dreams, who knows ?) so what I'm going to say is only > > based on reading and sim-playing ; you should consider asking > someone > like Dr Chris Web... > IMHO, the F16 (real beast) doesn't continue to roll when you > return > the stick to the center ; like any other plane, when you return > the > stick to the center, the control surfaces return to their > original > "flat" status and the plane stops rolling (more or less > immediately, > depending on the inertia). > Talking about inertia, this is a point which was included very > recently in flight-sims : the best one beeing, of course, > flanker, but > closely followed by sims like Jane's F15 and DI's iF18 (which is > very > good, IMHO, and modelling the F18 better than Jane's models the > F15). > My two cents... > > Regards, > David Zip Pierron, interim F18 pilot ;-) > > > > To unsubscribe from this list send email to majordomo@wlv.ac.uk with the word UN SUBSCRIBE FLANKER in the body (NOT the subject) of the message. - To unsubscribe to fscombat, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe fscombat" in the body of the message. That is correct you can only program the 4 buttons through the throttle. I eventually went out and bought a ch pro throttle to take advantage of all the buttons on my stick. I hated to do this because I liked the feel of the Suncom so much. I also had a Suncom stick witch I liked allot but since WB is my main FS the stick was too sensitive for that game for some reason. It worked well with the 2 or 3 other sims I fly on occasion. Also the Suncom throttle did not support the hold down keys of WB. In other words I couldn't program a button to use the viewing system. For instance you couldn't program KP5 into it and hold it down to view out the top. It would just flash between the top and front views. Dude Dan Champagne wrote: > Many Thanks TT. I appreciate that. However, the missions can be played single player on ANY version of EF2000 (I think!). It includes full aircraft and ground mobiles support. You can also choose static targets to destroy! Something you HAVE to try is 30 EF2000s vs. 30 EF2000s guns only -- it's amazing! Sure, patches will be released, but I think that the majority of computer users (hence, game players) never even upgrade a video driver, let alone a game... Unfortunately, releasing sims with bugs is a business decision. A poor but often necessary one. Sometimes a company has to get the stuff to market, then release a multitude of patches, so it can stay afloat. Still, I like the direction F4 is going. I suspect most, if not all, of us are waiting for the "Holy Grail" of sims; F4 may be just it. > .....anyway, this could well have a negative effect on the entire flight-sim "world". > Other > publishers are watching Falcon 4.0 to see if there is indeed any mass-market for > realistic flight-sims such as Falcon 4.0. I think it F4 flops, other developers will analyze the situation and learn from MPS's mistakes. I think we will still see some really great sims, no matter what the fate of F4 turns out to be. Gilman and company have always had some lofty visions... F4 is the child that will usher in the new era. :-) > I still stand by my belief that Falcon 4.0 should have kept its ORIGINAL specifications > and been released two years ago, followed by Falcon 5.0 around about next year > some-time... I suspect that F4 has kept the original specs (affected by a little feature creap). In fact, I seem to remember a statement, by someone (protecting the guilty by withholding his name), that F4 is what F3 was supposed to be. > I have no doubt that when Falcon 4.0 is released it will be a joy to behold, and I can't > wait. I do hope that we do not have to go through the patch olympics, like in the days of F3. Hey, if F4 does not make it... there is always Flanker 2.0. Seriously though, we are going to have to buy a lot of drinks (beers or otherwise) for the F4 team because they will be burning some serious midnight oil, to get F4 out for X-mas. Date: 16 Oct 1998 13:03:13 -0500 Gentlemen (and Ladies); Thinking of a new flight sim that might approach F15 gets my brain zooming along in a hurry. But F15 was not without bugs and the subsequent patch did alot to make the game more playable and stable. (Even though SHACK still makes me grin when the Wizzo yells it out!) I believe we need viable software producers to continue the improvement of the simulation software offerings. And while I know that all software comes with it's inherent bug list, I boil it down to HOW MANY bugs are there and just how playable the game really is. They will make millions of dollars on a new release that is worth a hoot and can therefore stay in business (those programmers don't write code for free.....). So, Bring On the New Stuff....We'll judge how playable it is and have fun doing it. I don't really look forward to the bitching and bellyaching that F15 produced. CJ did his best to keep the crowd updated. I just like to fly my sims........... Now available is a ladder for DID's F-22 ADF flight sim for PC users. But the ladders are not just about PC flight sims. It is dedicated to flight sims, Mac & PC. And they are dedicated to a flight sim community. The CWW ladders are fully automated with a cgi script instantly handling all the routine matters of accepting and mailing out challenges. Posting scores is also done automatically, all that you have to do to see a change after entering a score is reload the page. All this is required is to take two minutes and sign up by using the automated "add member" page where you enter the handle you want, your e-mail address and the password you want. As an option, if you belong to a squadron, you can select from the available choices to have your squadron listed with your entry. And squadrons can be added to the available selections by a simple editing process done by the ladder administrators By listing your squadron, two things happen. 1) If a URL for the squadron has been provided, there is a link created directly from your listing on the ladder page to your squadron 2) In addition to your personal standing, there is Squadron score page that takes it's stats directly from the list standings to rank the squadrons by ALL it's members achievements. One person can pull it up....or down. But to get to the top requires the squadron to pull together. The operation of the ladder is simple and straight forward.... After you register and listed on the ladder, you can challenge or be challenged by anyone. Once a challenge has been issed, the ladder mails both parties and notifies them of the challenge. At that point, it is up to the people involved to arrange to get together and fly the match. Ladders vary, but a challenge must be completed within 14 to 30 days before a default judgement is automatically awarded. Matches can be cleared by mutual agreement prior to the scheduled completion (or with the help of a ladder administrator) if scheduling difficulties arise. Once a match is completed, the loser of the match must use their password to enter the score on the results page. The ladders requires only a couple minutes here and there to make entries with results available just as quickly. No more mailing stuff around and waiting a day or two for replies or results. And new ladders are being all the time. And the ladder does have a set of operating rules to be found on the "about" page linked to each ladder. The ladder does have active monitoring to keep things in good shape and to repair mistakes. All it takes to remedy a mistake is to e-mail the ladder administrators. Each ladder also has it's own message board (fully automated) where the only rules are courtesy and common sense. Beyond that, anything relating to flight sims can be discussed although due the number of general flight simm message boards, general and specific, I would imagine the material would relate to the specific flight sim involved and/or the ladder itself. The ladders do offer some minor supplemental areas of interest that can be found on any of the ladders. Each ladder has an identical layout and functions. Currently, ladders offered are: GSC Hornet 2.x, 3.x and Korea (Mac & PC) Skyfighters (Mac) Bullseye Flying Circus (Mac) Warbirds H2H (Mac/PC) Red Baron II (PC) F15 (PC) iF-22 (PC) F-22 ADF (PC) Future ladders: Falcon 4 Screaming Demons Confirmed Kill ******************************************************* Callsign: Dale, Warbirds - cdb- ICQ# 3351618 Home Page: http://www.inficad.com/~cdb To join the CWW (Mac) or FSCombat (PC) listserver: http://www.inficad.com/~cdb/CWW/Media/listsub.html IRC channels #macflightsims - #fscombat, all on Dalnet http://www.tcsn.net/jardine/macflightsims http://www.inficad.com/~cdb/CWW/Services/irc.html Flight Sim Competition Ladders http://www.xmission.com/~thon/CWW/Competition/fsgc.html ******************************************************* - To unsubscribe to fscombat, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe fscombat" in the body of the message. Then, for a long time, I didn't have any time to put into developing the organization. This organization is the 3rd Fighter Wing (http://www.inficad.com/~cdb/3FW/3FW.html). The idea is to have a place/organization to help rookies find training. And to help form training squadrons where none exist. Or any training exist. Either individuals or squadrons can volunteer to provide training. And, in the case of a volunteer squadron, that is no outside interference in squadron affairs. What command structure there is will help individuals coordinate training and give whatever guidance might be needed. I hope to recruit some more people to provide more staff and the nucleus of new training squadrons. The current pages for the 3FW are out of date, but reflect what has been done and will be done. I am looking for volunteers (individual and squadron) willing to be listed as sources of training. Individuals would be listed by e-mail. Squadrons would be listed by squadron web page. If you're interested, please contact me. Hello Dale, I as my, or may not be aware I am the Commanding Officer of the 89th (New Zealand) Fighter Wing and I would be only to happy to help you in any way with your training wing. I have written several papers on air to air combat that I have presented as lectures to my squadron and would be more than happy to make these available to you for your use. Of course these papers are LANmeet orientated and as such the tactics are mostly usefull for when flying with human wingmen. However having said that I still feel that these lectures give new pilots a valuable insite in to the workings of a2a combat. Let me know if I can be of use to you. Yes, it's quite a shoot-them-up, but it is _very_ fun. Graphics are wonderful (full 3D, supporting Direct3D), effects are stunning and, moreover, although it's an arcade game, they introduced some effects like inertia, wind, blasts, which makes the player feel like if he really pilots the huge beast... Try it, it worked for me ;-) I'm not the same man I was, since I played MIA (isn't that a nice slogan ?)
