Date: 02 May 2003 09:24:01 -0500 My own take is that the softening of the market has been going on for at least a couple of years. Further, I don't really think that it is a surprise-how could it ever have maintained the strength that it had three or four years ago when the economy was so strong and the Dow was around 12,000 and the Nasdaq briefly reached 5,000? People had a lot more money then. Perhaps equally important, a few years back there was a mindset that Mormon books were a great investment. This meant a person could have his or her cake and eat it too-he or she could engage in an enjoyable hobby and make lots of money while doing it. I think that it will be interesting to see how long things stay soft, and how much prices will fall before some type of equilibrium is reached. Again this is my take, but it seems that a lot of people are offering books at prices that were established several years ago when the market was so strong, but people are just not willing to pay those prices now. BTW, I don't just mean people who you would normally think of as the sellers of books-bookdealers. I am sure that a lot of people come into booksellers' shops with wildly optimistic views on how much something is worth. Here is my vote for the book that will see the biggest price drop in the next year: Flake's bibliography. I am told that the new edition will be out in three months. My take is that the lack of books on the market = reflects collectors and especially investor's sentiments that prices are less = than they paid so they're going to sit on the books until prices come back. = That could be a while. I think the only consensus is that none of the books are very good. Fortunately, Todd Compton is working to fill this void, as he is writing a bio of Hamblin. My guess is that it is a few years away, as Todd has just now finished editing the diaries of Helen Mar Kimball (this is in the USU series).
