Almost everyday, for the past several years, I have read the posts, sometimes maybe only one in a day, sometimes almost 100! It's a part of my life, and I imagine also to over 100 others out there who love LDS books! There are many memories... sharing events in the lives of the guests to your library, plus so much valuable and often timely information shared about books. I've always thought that when I retire as President of my claims and risk management company, I would spend my time in my book store, encouraging others who love LDS books, especially collectible ones, to visit and chat (many enjoy the rocking chairs I have in there now), just as we have done on the LDS-bookshelf! I feel like I've met many friends personally, and through cyberspace, at the LDS-bookshelf. Your "library" will always be remembered by the many who have visited and met each other there! Thanks for your inspiration in creating this list. I know it must be hard to be the janitors, and sometimes the "good cop or the bad cop", but I am going to miss this, and hope that we can all meet again somewhere soon! It will take a long while to get out of the habit of checking my e-mail frequently to see what the latest post is. I doubt you good people will ever know how much I've enjoyed my time here. Never in my life have I had such a rare opportunity to be associated with a combination of kind, brilliant, friendly, and impressive individuals. My story is, I work ALL the time. As a newlywed, I only see my wife for about an hour, maybe two a day. For the past several months I've had two jobs that have had me leaving my home at 7:30 A.M. and not arriving back until 9:30 P.M. Christmas cut my time even shorter, getting home around midnight. Through a wearisome time where I've longed for the 9 to 5 routine I've always been able to log onto Bookshelf and find some great friends. Working all the time, I don't have too many "other" friends :) I hope I haven't been too personal or sappy. In case you haven't noticed, I rarely say the right thing. Thanks so much for letting a snotty, obnoxious, thinks he knows it all, arrogant, goofy, hot tempered little punk like me be part of such a great crowd of folks. Many thanks especially to the two janitors who worked their tails off and put up with a lot of garbage (a great deal provided by yours truly). I also appreciate those times when I wasn't put in the box (or just outright excommunicated) for when I decided it was time to be a complete and total jerk. Of course, with my big fat mouth, I'm sure I'll be posting my memories along with the rest until the day arrives. Many thanks again. I've been pretty much a lurker all the time, but reading the Bookshelf messages and getting acquainted with fellow bookshelfer has been very pleasurable. As I said in response to the recent trolling on the list, the Bookshelf has become a place I really enjoy, and I've resented others' efforts to remake it in some new image. Here are some of my favorite moments (these are the ones that come to mind this morning. I reserve the right to think up other favorites as the week goes by): The publication of the Biblioteca Scalawagiana: an extreme act of generosity by Keith and Hugh. Thank you both. The Porcine Protocols. I've never laughed out loud at an email message before or since that time Over the years, I bought a book from Keith, and I sold several to Hugh The concern and prayers for Diane's health, and the happiness in seeing her return The sly humor in the irregular notes from the "chairman" up in Michigan Meeting Scot Denhalter (in person) at his brother's funeral Reading and printing out Dean's lists, and revising and adding to them The Bookshelf has been like life itself: full of positive and negative experiences that have managed to bring together a disparate group of people. I hope it'll continue in some form. From 1967 to 1973, I heard the "F" word fewer than a dozen times, so isolated was my environment (mission and BYU). Even so, I marvel to contemplate the degree of isolation from unpleasantness which some people achieve. This is most decidedly a book topic, because LDS readers and collectors inevitably encounter things which shock or irritate them. Even those who actively resist buying or touching what they would consider anti-Mormon books will someday read something they did not want to see. How they handle the new-found concept or information will both determine and reveal things about not only their collecting, but their approach to life in general. Dean, for example, has explained frankly on this list how he handles certain things which might bother him. While my approach is sometimes different, I have no problem with his approach as he explains it, and I respect it. And, he has been quite gracious about a few things which I accommodate in rather a less faithful way than he. Books open new doors for all of us, but we are not required - or always well advised - to walk through every one of them. The responsibility, I believe, is not on the author, but on the reader.
