My apologies.  I changed the name to Mormon-Library and transferred =
everyone who had already signed up at the wrong one over to the right =
one.  So if you already signed up - you don't have to do anything =
different, you're still signed up.

I will say that I own and moderate 14 groups and I am not much of a =
moderator.  The list will be pretty much self moderated and I will only =
ex people who are way out of line and if I get a few complaints about =
them privately.=20

Hugh and Keith,
I wish we knew what your plans were.  I would hate to build a library of =
my own when I can just come over to use yours.  No reason to have two =

the passion of designing your own collection.  Forget the highspots.  We hav=

all read the Book of Mormon, and we know what it says.  Why buy an expensive=

edition of it, when that money could form something unique and original whic=

would add to our history and our understanding?

I have a personal collection (unrelated to Mormonism) which I think is=20
probably one of a kind, or at least very unusual.  My passion for it is so=20
intense that every time I look at it, I am nearly moved to tears.  It has=20
cost me perhaps a thousand dollars total, over the last ten or twelve years.=
 =20
It relates to apprenticeship and related guardianship.  Young men and women,=
=20
some infants, apprenticed out to various tradesmen or farmers.  It ranges=20
from the year 1693 to the later nineteenth century.  And the power of those=20
indentures, related letters, articles and a few books!  "The black boy Enoch=

in Maine, who died or disappeared before the indenture form could be signed=20
by Longfellow's grandfather.  The baby girl "apprenticed" out to learn=20
domestic skills (a legal device to provide her with a home).  My original=20

Interesting to whom? There's no point in trying to impress the neighbors--
most of them don't read anything, and very few of the rest would be=20
interested in the same things you are.

I have some control over what's interesting to me, so I can channel my=20
interests into less expensive areas. Someone could probably put together=20=

a very interesting collection of pre-WWII Mormon fiction and poetry for =

couple thousand dollars, even with some first editions (other than =

by Eliza R. Snow Smith Young). Or how 'bout a collection of hymnals?=20
Someone could spend a long time and not much money putting together a=20
collection of hymnals in good condition. (They'd probably have to =

for a reprint of the first one, though.)  I think it would be a very =

I am really sad about the list closing down. I have been on almost since =
the onset, and feel I have really become a better collector of LDS books =
due to my exposure and the things I've learned.

I wish Hugh & Keith all of the best and hope to be able to take part of =
their new venture, whatever they may be, in the future. I have met them =
both, and enjoyed their fellowship on outings and the valuable knowledge =
they have imparted to those on this list.

The keepsake they put out for all of us was a labor of love on their =
part and I have copies on my shelves which I enjoy very much. I know =
their patience has been tried many times trying to keep the shelf =
dignified and respectful.

Which one am I?

If it hasn't already been determined, I'd prefer being "the other
Bob," please. It has kind of a cachet to it.

In addition to what others have said, I'll point out that I've met in
person with 2 list members that I--oops, almost said "otherwise owuldn't
have met." But that's not quite true. I had already met Steve once before,
but this time he came to my stompin' grounds. And I had a nice lunch and
bookshelf browse with Will. Reward enough for being on the list, even
without all the other good stuff. So I add my thanks to the janitors.

Ok.  I woke up in a hospital bed 8 months ago, unable to even walk to the
bathroom by myself.  My left leg felt cold and hurt like hell, my left eye
didn't want to open and when asked to do simple math (you are at McDonalds,
your order comes to $4.99, you give the cashier $10, what is your change?)
I couldn't answer then, which devastates me because I KNEW I used to be
able to give the answer.  My left eye won't open, I couldn't remember the
past month.  It's like I went to bed normal  one night and was possibly
caught in some horrible practical joke.
The months pass, and I still feel, from time to time, that this is not,
after all, real life, but a great big practical joke, I sure don't feel
like a faith promoting experience, however many times I am mentioned in
Stake Conference and in my ward.  This is not to deride the members--they
are my miracles.
  My leg is still cold and still aches, though I walk up to 2 miles a day 6
days a week.  I still see double, though not through a car
windshield--which forms a fusible frame.  My mind still trades
words--anchovies for artichokes, two hour for two miles.  I  like having a
trantrum and drumming my heels most days.  But I don't.
That would mean the practical joker has won, besides, I decided it was
probably  real after all.
Until I read the Bookshelf is going.  Now a cosmic practical joker seems
quite real--and perhaps has won after all.

I shall miss Rick's tales of one of a kind items.  I shall treasure his
"The Maven".  I too loved the Porcine Protocols--thank you Scott.
I shall always treasure my copy of  Biblioteca Scalawagiana--Thanks Hugh
and Keith and Sandi.

I have enjoyed talking with many of you privately on-line and meeting some
of you, especially at MHA 1999.  I've enjoyed doing business with many of
you.

I enjoyed the tips on books care---to scalpel or not to scalpel--and why.

I like advice on which bookstore to go to in which towns--even if I won't
be able to trave there for a while.

I'm afraid my memory needs some refreshing before I go on.  It still feels
like a cosmic practical joke.
