Sister, thou wast mild and lovely, Gentle as the summer breeze, Pleasant as the air of evening When it floats among the trees. Peaceful be they silent slumber, Peaceful in the grave so low; Thou no more wilt join our number; Thou no more our songs shall know. Dearest sister, thou hast left us; Here thy loss we deeply feel, But 'tis God that hast bereft us; He can all our sorrows heal. To be sung to the tune of "Damn! I Wish LDS-Bookshelf Could Go On Forever!" Hie to the top of the Nephites' wall - Proclaim the message, tell them all of yesterday, The golden times Before their fall. Loudly cheer the volumes rare, The bindings gilt, The pages fair; Describe the flaws, and then repair To paneled den or darkened vault To chant the Porcine Protocol. We are righteous in our way: We have our books, We own the day; What can the meager scholar say With mere transcriptions, furtive looks At what we hold, preserving all! Haste to the larder's hidden cash! So comes the need, So hotly dash - Ho! for the secret money stash: We are that on which we feed. The pages cry; we hear their call. Bless the variants, praise the fonts, Fly to biblio-favored haunts; Spy the remnants, fill our wants, Ignore the Cretans' mindless taunts. Boldly scattering forth our praise, We never stopped To change our ways: Hard to a fault and wide our gaze - Shelfers screamed and janitors mopped, And by the end, we said it all. The cry was heard beyond our gates: (Not all love books And vengeance waits From he who fears and he who hates With crafty words, disdainful looks) - They did not know our protocol. Now a time of sadness here Suggests an end, Yet useless, fear: Whose is the time to shed a tear But he whose mind knows not to bend All things which change, to future's call! Reach to the top of the Bookshelf tall - Take down our message, read the truths of yesterday, The golden times. Remember all. The object was to merge the works of two authors and create a description of its likely contents. A sampler from the NY Times article Rick cited, then Mormon variants by Rick, Bob Woolley, Ardis Parshall, and myself: > "Green Eggs and Hamlet" - Would you kill him in his bed? Thrust a dagger through his head? I would not, could not, kill the King. I could not do that evil thing. I would not wed this girl, you see. Now get her to a nunnery. (Robin Parry, Arlington) And Now the Mormon Version: THE BOOK OF MORMON DOCTRINE. And it came to pass that Bruce the Omniscient did climb upon the wall and did begin to cry with a loud and a mighty voice. Yea, with a mighty and a loud voice did he begin to cry upon the wall upon which he had climbed. And what he said, we know not, we wist not, neither was it canonized among the people, yet they knew by a still, small voice that it was true. HOUSE OF THE LORD OF THE FLIES. William Golding rewrites Talmage's classic into a disturbing account of the anarchy that sets in when elderly workers are locked into a Mormon temple. FAMILY NIGHT FUN AT THE OK CORRAL: As an exercise in the true meaning of Christmas, the Earp family plays Secret Santa for a less-active family in their ward. Unfortunately, the Clantons misunderstand all that sneaking around in the dark. FASCINATING WOMANHOOD TELLS IT ALL - Fanny Stenhouse decries the lot of Utah polygamous wives who secretly use their feminine wile coupled with subjegation to their husbands in vain attempts to throw off their bonds. Includes stories of the time Ann Eliza Young and Eliza R. Snow greeted Brigham Young, returning from General Conference, dressed in nothing but cellophane. Also relates the little known fact that after Brigham uttered the famous words, "This is the place," he reached in his pocket for a handkerchief and came up with Amelia Folsom's panties. He never forgot her!!! Introduction by Harriet Beecher Stowe: "The slave pens of the South have become a nightmare of the past; the auction-block and whipping-post have given place to the pedestal of femininity. Sometimes the volume of traffic got a little overwhelming and I must confess that if I had been away for a few days and discovered several score unread messages I sometimes barely even looked at them before deleting them. On the other had, if I was away and found only a few messages I was always disappointed as if ones friends had lapsed into a stupor as soon as you looked away. While I have met only a very few of the 'Shelfers in person and a few more via phone or mail, I feel like I have gained a valuable insight into each of the posters and made a few friends in the process. I really had only 3 morning rituals, go get a copy of USA Today, a pint of Nestle NesQuik chocolate milk (my grand-daughter call this bunny milk) and download email to check LDS-Bookshelf. I'll miss the daily postings concerning books, non-books, even rantings by people who clearly aren't as clear thinking as myself. I've accumulated a lot of useful information about books and a lot of nice to know (but probably useless) information about other things. I found the thread Bill started by asking us to introduce and reveal a little of ourselves extremely interesting. All in all this has been a most enjoyable few years and I thank the janitors and well as the list-members for their contributions. Even though I sometimes cussed the volume of posts and wished people would cool down I still will miss even that just a little. So tomorrow I'll get my paper and bunny milk and download - something.
