Not having ever heard this one (to my recollection), I dug out my old
1948
hymnal (which, BTW, still had the price marked in the front -- $2.95)
and
there as #381 was your choice of a "swan song." Lovely words, but
most
interesting to me is the fact that the author is Samuel F. Smith.
Now, my
question to the 'Shelfers is this:
Who do you suppose Samuel F. Smith wrote these words to honor?
Sister, thou wast mild and lovely,
Gentle as the summer breeze,
Pleasant as the air of evening
When it floats among the trees.
Peaceful be they silent slumber,
Peaceful in the grave so low;
Thou no more wilt join our number;
Thou no more our songs shall know.
Dearest sister, thou hast left us;
Here thy loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God that hast bereft us;
He can all our sorrows heal.
Yet again we hope to meet thee
When death's gloomy night has fled;
Then on earth with joy to greet thee
Where no bitter tears are shed.
Thanks, Keith. Now I have a mystery on my hands. That ought to take
up some
of my slack time.
Best regards and thanks,
Norma

Subject: [LDS-Bookshelf] All of Rick's Posts
Those were my favorites.
Including the most recent poem. Rick seems to be (I never met him) just a
nice guy who is very knowledgeable and very cautious about irking people.
His posts were always professional and always enjoyable. He could comment
on a non-faith promoting (or totally faith promoting) discussion without
drawing fire from either side - just stating the facts and documenting the
information - always allowing others to come to their own conclusion.
I like Rick - and his posts.
I suppose you could say that the association with people who have much more
knowledge than I (in the area of Mormon Books) is what I will miss the most.
If someone ever came to me with a letter from Orson Pratt to Brigham Young
discussing the differences in their understandings about the nature of God -
and asked me if I could sell it for them, I knew that I could easily say, "I
know this guy up in New York state that can help us find a new home for your
letter."
If someone came to me with a letter from Brigham Young to James Strang
requesting Bro. Strang to support him and join them in their travels to the
West - I would call john Hajicek.
If someone came to me with an incomplete book of Mormon - no title page,
etc. - I knew where to go to try to find out which edition it might be.
Hugh Stocks - the Book of Mormon man.
I even knew who to call if I found some letter from Heber J. Grant to Joseph
Musser inviting him to be a witness for some post manifesto plural sealing.
I suppose that I will remember the people that I met here. I suppose I will
continue to grow and learn the things I would like to know about Mormon Book
collecting. I suppose the new Mormon-Library will attract some of the
people from this list. But I don't ever expect it to be able to "replace"
this list.
Some things just can't be replaced.

As I read in bed, not weary,
Dreaming of what acquisition life's collecting had in store,
Spotted then my next ambition:
"Book for sale, the first edition-
"Stunning copy, fine condition."
Only this, and nothing more.
Furtively, I dialed the number,
Softly leaving spouse to slumber -
Having crept from 'neath the cover,
Leaving her to dream of other
Things I now could buy no more . . .
Guiltily, I shut the door.
Needle-like to addict's plumbing
(Veins and arteries a' gumming)
Quick and hard I pressed receiver
Close against my frightened ear:
"We still have it, never fear!"
Oh! the rush; the high sensation,
Reveling in wild temptation:
Never priesthood correlation,
Lesson plan or publication
Lately issued, thrilled me more . . .
"Send the book, though I be poor!"
Then to 'fridge I went a' prowling,
Heart aflame and stomach growling,
Guilt behind me lowly howling;
"Hush, cruel sprite, I am Collector!
"Only that, and nothing more."
Hungrily I sought the marrow,
Chocolate cake, or roast beef rare-o,
Something to assuage my hunger,
Calm me back to bed and slumber.
Starkly shone the bulb on racks devoid of food or pickle jar [pronounced
"jor," as this epic is set in Utah]-
Only this, and nothing more.
Soon the gleam illum'ned a specter
Vague at first, then, cruel projector!
In the light my first son Hector
Held his mother's hand, accusing-
She, her moist eyes sadly musing;
"No more food," they sobbed, "or mission,
"Only books, and nothing more!"
"No, my dears," I quick protested,
"Fortune here is safely vested
"On these shelves, where double-nested
"Stand my treasures priced so dear.
"I COULD sell them, never fear!"
Perched on top, my 1830
Book of Mormon, like a birdy
Mocked me, cawed, "You hopeless nerdy!
"When took'st thou the time to oil me;
"Mend the leaf you lately tore?
"Sell me then, and feed Lenore!"
[It is thus near the end of our adventure that we learn the name of the

much difficulty finding meaningful words to rhyme, hence the shortened version
above.]
"Blessed maven, spare me," cried I,
"Teach me other venues," sighed I,
"Show the way to buy AND keep you,
"Make me a financial guru!"
Silence, then (except Lenore) . . .
"Is it thus?" -her dark eyes widening,
"Can it be?" -her pale skin whitening:
"Swore that you had paid the mortgage,
"Said your diet CALLED for porridge.
"Meanwhile, nagging bills unopened lying quiet on the floor!"
All of this, and a whole lot more.
Then, a fog came slowly wafting
Through the chamber - set me coughing,
Strange, ethereal, in the offing
Far, then closer marched the dealers
(Book and rare old paper stealers)
Come to claim my treasured lore.
The vision chilled me to the core.
Quick before the shelves I hurried,
Eyes aghast and feeling worried,
Pulse increasing, old heart flurried.
Then the pain! My body buckled-
Down I went; the buyers chuckled.
All went dark, then nothing more.
Thus will end all bibliophiles
Who spend their substance on such piles
Of first editions, tracts and files:
Binding-rich but dossier-poor!
"George, wake up! You're going to be late for work again!"
. . . 'Twas just a dream, and nothing more.

I would guess that many of us have double-nested shelves of treasures. I
COULD sell mine, but instead, I will once again drop to one meal per day and
I may soon be able to buy another tome for the collection.
If you miss breakfast, you can make it up at lunch. If you miss lunch, you
can have extra supper. But if you miss that rare find - it may be years
before it exposes itself to your view once again.
I hope the growling of my stomach doesn't offend anyone on the list.

Ah, the sounds of the true collector! A model of which we can all be proud.
Some of the most amazing early Mormon items I have been privileged to sell
were found and acquired years ago by collectors and dealers who had very
little money, and who did indeed go so far as to scrimp on necessities to
obtain their pearls of great price. It turns out that they were very
handsomely rewarded monetarily as well, decades after they made these
acquisitions.

My name is Morgan, and I'm a book collector
I'm not sure exactly when I subscribed to LDS-Bookshelf, but the
first
message I archived from the list was a message from Brian Stuy, dated
5/11/97, saying he has a set of bound BYU Speeches of the Year for
sale (1972-95), $225 obo.
I saved several messages from 3 weeks later in which Will Bagley
defends claims regarding Brigham Young's role in the Mountain Meadows
Massacre.
I subscribed because I expected some discussion of books that I
may want to buy and read. I thought all the talk about collecting
and quality and dust jackets a little odd--something I'd have to
tolerate while waiting for more discussion of book content.
By the end of '97, I was a collector. Since then, I've added more
and more shelves in my house, and 7 months ago I bought a
bigger house. As soon as we got our clothes unpacked, we found
a cabinetmaker to build a large oak bookcase to display the
more appealing parts of my collection, many of which were
purchased from fellow Bookshelfers Bruce McDaniel, Brian Romriell,
Diane Peel (a boxed set of Arrington's History of Idaho in beautiful
dark green cloth), Curt Bench, et al.
My wife is worried about my book collecting, but I've assured
her that I can quit any time.

Subject: Re: [LDS-Bookshelf] The future of LDS-Bookshelf
While I too was saddened by the shutting down of the LDS-Bookshelf, I
think it was a wise choice.
For LDS-bookshelf to have been an effective environment to talk about
"collectable LDS books", it would require about 10 "student-collectors"
(i.e., people who read items, understand there context historically
and/or doctrinally and are willing to participate, as opposed to people
who have great books solely on the virtue of assets; perhaps someone like
Peter Crawley would be a good example) and a half dozen or so of the more
sophisticated dealers in the business (again, I speak of technical
sophistication as to books - Rick Grunder would be a good example).
Again, they would also have to participate.
I have been amazed over the years how many good questions received not
one reply. I have been amazed at how many off-topic posts generated
reply after reply.
I suppose the lesson I learned best is that there is tremendous diversity
of views in the LDS community and consequently substantial tension within
the community. I was content to learn that once. Regrettably, I was
reminded of it countless times.
There were glimmers of light and I enjoyed immensely the on-topic posts.
That is why I did not quit.
I must say that I have no interest in participating in a group that
simply replicates what the bookshelf has become, instead of what it
intended to be.

Subject: [LDS-Bookshelf] A Plotting Shelfer discusses a coupla volumes
Oops. I meant plodding. That's one of the things brain injury does to
you. Just last week I said I was cooking s chicken and artichoke dish but
called it chicken with anchovies to the family. One said merely that sho
wasn't "going to eat it", the others just said, "yeah, right." The CORRECT
HELPFUL thing to say to someone with a brain injury is "You just said
anchovies. You hate anchovies. Your brain must be more scarmbled than we
thought." This would help the brain injured person discover his/her
mistake and start to get pissed of at you, but she would quickly forget why.
Since my family is not cooperating, I look up Harrison Ford and found Rex
Harrison, called my neurologist, a Dr Garland, Dr Garfield, referred to two
miles as two hours.
Anyway. Someday I just know those poor brave souls who stayed with me
most of the way are going to have a conversation like this when a few of
them meet:
"I bought that damaged _History of Utah Set_ from her, boy was that a saga."
Shudder. "You ain't kidding. 100 days gray temperature inversion , with 5
days of sunshine interspered during which she managed to forget the camera
settings, forget she had a camera easel, forget the camera settings again--"
"That was boring the first time!
"Well, then, there were the ho-hum catalogs and more boring catalogs....
I finally got serious when the last kid got out of braces last month. I
mean really, _Doctrines of Salvation_ and _Mormonism Explained_ are all
very well, but I just thought it was time to ask to stop getting her up
coming sales lists.
Another nodded. "Me too. It's sad really. She wasn't ever much, but she
really went down hill. Talk about a scrambled brain!"
Two of them sit back and smile. The first says, "You know, when she
actually did her catalogs, she didn't do them from memory. She had the
books in front of her. When she said _Doctrines of Salvation_ she meant a
first edition _Doctrine and Covenants_.
The second grinned at the nonplussed faces. ."Yeah. _Mormonism Explained_
turned out to be _Mormonism Exposed_. We both got sweet deals." They
start to walk away and turn back to add-
"She's working on a book now. It's titled _The Mensa Guide For the Brain
Impaired_
