My mind is foggy (as it often is) about the pros and cons of the several versions of this manuscript that have been published. Can anyone give a cogent review of the volumes published under this title. Was there one manuscript or notes that were in the church archives, an original manuscript, plus a revised manuscript of Lucy's writings about Joseph? Thanks in advance for any light! Platte River Road Narratives has been on my want list for a while and I just let one go on ebay 2 days ago. Got sniped . Should have bid higher. Another bibliography on my want list is the Wagner-Camp-Becker. Last year was a good one for bibliographies though. I got Flake and the Studies in Mormon History. Reasonable prices too. Also got Mintz, "The Trail...' and Townley, "The Trail West..." and Cowan's "A Bibliography of the History of California....". In addition to Wagner- Camp that Bob Clark mentioned, Howes US-IANIA is right up there as well. I'll just list four of my most frequently used reference works on various aspects of Western Americana, including Mormon Americana. Wagner-Camp. Wagner, Henry R. The Plains and the Rockies. A Bibliography of Original Narratives of Travel and Adventure 1800-1865. The original edition was issued in the 19th century in a tiny edition of 20 or so copies. The second edition , 1921 had a total of 400 copies. The second revised edition came out in an edition of 600 copies published by the Grabhorn Press in 1937. A Third edition was issued and edited and revised by Charles Camp, in honor of Mr. Wagner's 90th birthday and published in 1953. Dale Morgan was a major contributor to this edition. This edition is 601pp with an appendix of title page facsmiles at the rear. John Howell Books published the 4th edition in 1982, Revised, enlarged and edited by Robert Becker. HOWES US-IANIA Howes, Wright US-IANIA 1700-1950. A descriptive check-list of 11,450 printed sources relating to those parts of continental North America now comprising the United States. New York 1954. 656pp. A revised and enlarged edition was issued in 1962 and goes back an addition fifty years, from 1650-1950 with reprints in 1963, 1970, & 1978. In 1994 William E. Hartley III issued Wright Howes: The Final Edition of U.S. iania. 850 copy printing. 757pp. Working from Wright Howes personally annotated copy of the 1962 edition, Hartley has annotated 125 new entries, deleted 50 entries, and corrected numerous errors, updated values and completely renumbered the entire volume. This was all done from Howes' annotations. RAMPAGING HERD Adams, Ramon. The Rampaging Herd A Bibliography of books and pamphlets on men and events in the cattle industry. 1959 orig. edition. reprinted 1982. 463pp. SIX GUNS AND SADDLE LEATHER Adams, Ramon F. Six-Guns and Saddle Leather A Bibliography of books and pamphlets on western outlaws and gunmen. 1969. Rerpinted 1982 in a revised and enlarged edition. All I have time for tonight. Many more good works, but these four are "bibles". And an important source of good reference are auction catalogs and dealer catalogs. Hugh & Keith of course reprinted the very rare Biblioteca Scallywagania, the first catalog of Mormon works, and the Herbert Auerbach auction catalogs are of prime importance to Mormon collectors. Many of these items I have for sale, contact me off list if you have any interest. - -- Ken Sanders Ken Sanders Rare Books 268 South 200 East Salt Lake City UT 84111 (801) 521-3819 Fax: (801) 521-2606 http://www.ksb.com ken@dreamgarden.com - ---------------------------------------------------------- - - LDS-Bookshelf, information and discussion of LDS books - - To unsubscribe, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with - - "unsubscribe lds-bookshelf" (without quotes) in the message body. - - For assistance, mail to "lds-bookshelf-owner@lists.xmission.com" ------------------------------ End of lds-bookshelf-digest V1 #910 ***********************************
