I am in the process of >inputting my library into my Visor(I'm probably going about it backwards) . Does >anybody else have their library on a palm pilot , and if so do they have a search >program they use to search their library with? I'm experimenting with an eval copy of Readerware (www.readerware.com), but haven't tried out the Palm add-on yet. The nice thing about this product is how easy it is to capture data for book that have ISBNs (published since 1970). You enter the ISBN, then the program searches Amazon, B&N.com, or the Library of Congress web sites for title, author, publisher, pages, even a picture of the cover. It can read a list of ISBNs from a file and import a ton of books automatically. It also supports bar code readers, including the CueCat (which you can get free from Radio Shack). There are versions of the program for Windows, Linux, and Solaris ($40), a Palm add-on (+$10), and Mac under development. There is also a client-server version for $450 (bookstores or maybe small libraries). Problems I've seen so far: Some program crashes (I'm not positive these were the program's fault--I mostly use my computer for software development, so I'm always installing and removing software and running buggy programs). Limited configurability. I'm used to using Access, where I can move fields around on the data entry form, and add or remove fields at will. Readerware provides most fields you'd want in a book database and allows you to define up to 10 more. The format of the data entry screen is not configurable. Few report formats provided. Readerware outputs its reports in HTML, so if you have any experience designing web pages, it shouldn't be difficult to come up with reports that look like anything you want. If not, you're limited to the 3 very basic report designs. The current version of the program only allows you to sort by author and title, which is a major limitation (IMO), but the next version of the program promises to allow you to sort on any field. The Proctors talked somewhat about the manuscripts and the changes in their book, but mainly used the most recent edition of JS's history and then included some footnotes and pictures. Some of the note information is informative about church history, but they do not discuss any of the different manuscripts or changes. Lucy's Book, on the other hand, is all about the manuscripts and changes. I had a chance to briefly look at a galley copy and it looks incredible! In several places throughout the book there are multiple columns to compare the changes side by side. There is a lengthy, detailed introduction about the history of the manuscript, the first edition published by Pratt in London, and the second edition published later in the 20th century. I last heard that Signature was promised by the printer that they would have the book in hand on March 16th and they would begin shipping it to retailers then. I can't wait. Sorry if all of this information has already been discussed. I'm using webmail while I'm on vacation and I think I lost some of the bookshelf posts accidentally. Best to all. Snow. Is the volume of last fall (hardback, USU?)the same content as the paperback 1995 publication? Additionally, I have heard rumors that USU deliberately or by goof, produced only 300 to 350 copies of the new book last fall, and that demand will in time make this item much more valuable than retail price. The=20 Proctors talked somewhat about the manuscripts and the changes in their book, but mainly used the most recent edition of JS's history and then included some footnotes and pictures. I last heard that Signature was promised by the printer that they would have the book in hand on March 16th and they=20 would begin shipping it to retailers then. I can't wait. Sorry if all of this information has already been discussed. I'm using webmail while I'm on vacation and I think I lost some of the bookshelf posts accidentally. Best to all. Snow book is pretty much exactly like the previous editions released. I don't know about the limited number, last time I checked it was still in print. (Of course, that doesn't mean it's not the small print run you indicated, lack of high sales could be because of the previous edition) However, the Patty Bartlett Sessions volume from USU is out of print in hardcover and is only available in paperback. You should still be able to hunt one down for a very reasonable price, but that probably won't last (by reasonable, I bought mine brand new for $30.00, or thereabouts.) I don't think they published a paperback though. In 2000, Utah State University Press reprinted the same book as volume 5 of their Life Writings of Frontier Women series. The reprint matches the rest of the series. It is printed in both hard and softbound for about $35 and $20 respectively. It may have a limited hardbound print run since the first edition by University Of Utah Press had been in print for 5 years and many potential buyers already have the first edition. And the first edition is still on remainder at Benchmark for $19.99. So, what do you do? Buy the first edition which would normally be more collectible, or, buy the reprint which would match the rest of the Life Writings of Frontier Women series? You would want to complete the series, right?? I have the first edition, but will I regret not having the series complete in matching volumes? Of course, when I decide to get the series reprint, it will be out of print. Bob Carter - --- John Hatch wrote: > The new Eliza R.
