The only difference is an additional two-page preface by the editor, Maureen Ursenbach Beecher, in which she describes the reasons the book is reprinted as part of the USU series. She indicates that when it was published by the University of Utah, it was intended as the first of a 13-volume series of frontier women's life writings. The UofU changed its priorities and decided not continue most of its Mormon and Western Americana publications (other than Indian history). It made sense, she says, to include it as a part of USU's series. The USU version was printed in only about 350 hardcover copies, intended for those seeking a full set of hardcovers for the series. As a result, it simultaneously published the softcover edition. For other books in the series, it only publishes a softcover once the hardcover sells out--thus the only other softcover so far is _Mormon Midwife_, which sold out of its 2000+ copy printing. I think the series is attractive and important and collectors will want a complete hardcover set. As a result, once the hardcover of _Personal Writings_ sells out, I predict it quickly will become difficult to find (and yes, more pricey). One of my current reading sources may fall well short of the intellectual level of this list, but I wanted to mention it because it is having a positive effect on my own life. To see such a cross section of people, with their divergent background mention where they agree and where they struggle with what the church teaches, and its policies, mentioning some of the issues and problems we all encounter as we have involvement with the church, is refreshing. It has only the following printing info on the copyright page: Second Edition Revised and Enlarged September 1991 There is no explicit statement as to the printing nor is there a printing number line. Brian's post indicates there were 3 printings of the Covenant reprint edition in addition to the Deseret Book edition. David assumes that the 3 printings include the Desert Book first edition as the first printing. Anyone know for sure? It has also been reprinted recently in a trade paper edtion.
