"Overland Journey" has a good deal of Mormon content including Greeley's two hour interview with Brigham Young, some insightful observations on doctrines and practices, (He's critical of the impromptu, wandering nature of GA sermons, speculates that holy murder is sanctioned by a few leaders but that most are ignorant of it, is critical of BY's assertion that slavery is divinely inspired, etc.) provides observations on the garrison army at Camp Floyd, and also makes interesting observations about the difference between the Mormon settlement at Genoa and that in Utah. I think it's worth having, obviously. Greeley was something of an outspoken radical for his times and though he attempts an even handed approach, his opinions are both strong and obvious. The dealers in Grass Valley and Nevada City have been promoting the "Book Town" concept for their area and their guide lists 28 sellers. That's way above average for a community of that size. There were about 50 sellers at the fair, but it didn't seem too crowded with buyers, so I wonder if it was a success. I did not emerge unscathed. I vacillated for a while on whether to buy Kurutz' Gold Rush Bibliography and then finally succumbed. Decisions like that are always harder when your wife is there. I bought it from James Bryant who has been on the Bookshelf in the past. At $150, it was less than any copy on the net. Of course, you know who I pointed that out to. And then J S Holiday was signing books there and since he wrote the intro to Kurutz' book, I had him sign it. Now all I have to do is look up Kurutz some day and have him sign it too. And then I bought a few books from Bob Clark. One was the recently revised edition of Bagley's Pioneer Camp. It comes in the blue series edition. I originally purchased it in the trade edition with a DJ. Now I'll have the first volume in a series edition to match the rest of the series. If you're ever vacationing in the area, Grass Valley and Nevada City are definitely good examples of gold rush towns to visit and they have all those book stores as an added bonus. Be sure and ask for the guide when you visit one of the stores. Bob Carter __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! It contains Visions by George Washington, Newman Bulkley, S. M. Farnsworth, and C.D. Evans. I've heard about the George Washington vision though not seen it in print before. The Bulkley vision was in Springville in 1886 and is mostly about nasty things happening to congress. Farnsworth's vision is dated 1844, Nauvoo. It deals with Brigham Young taking charge and leading the faithful back to Missouri. The Evans vision is dated Christmas 1882 and like Bulkley, sees corruption in government and a pending scene of doom saved only by a voice calling people to look to the mountain tops for the true lovers of freedom where everyone lives happily ever after. I'd be interested in any context for this pamphlet (other than the obvious anti-Washington sentiment from Edmunds-Tucker.) I didn't know about that pamphlet, but I have typescript copies of Newman Bulkley's vision, since he was my gggrandfather! I'd be interested in whatever people have to say about the pamphlet.
