I haven't seen any drop in asking prices but I did recently pick up a first edition of A MORMON MOTHER when the dealer offered a substantial discount without me asking for it. This wasn't a dealer who specializes in Mormon books, though. I wondered what the PBA Book of Mormon went for. Thanks for that info. It was a quite decent copy. For those with an interest in Western Americana and who have some money to spend, Acorn Books in San Francisco picked up a nice chunk of the library of Lawton Kennedy. Amongst the treasures is the limited edition of Dale Morgan's WEST OF WILLIAM ASHLEY. It is numbered "0" and inscribed by Morgan "Printer's Copy" with Lawton Kennedy's signature next to the "0." A mere grand will make it yours. It brought $45,000 + the buyer's 15% premium, totalling $51, 750. This was on September 13, two days after the World Trade Center destruction, just as the maximum impact was settling upon the country. And we were treated to the usual milquetoast description which inspires less than full confidence in serious bidders ("'. . . on this flimsy foundation was reared America's most successful theocracy . . .' . . .complete with the rare leaf of testimonials at the end. . . .) Of course, I have had my latest first edition up on the website for a couple weeks without a sale yet, whereas two years ago it would have been sold on the first or the second phone call, within half an hour or so. Brodie, 2nd edition, revised & enlarged, Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1990 printing date. A close look at Joseph Smith unlike any other. Such a highly controversial biography, that it caused quite a stir in the church when it was first published in 1945, prompting an immediate rebuttal by Hugh Nibley, titled 'No Maam, That's Not History,' refuting many of Brodie's conclusions. No longer available in hardback, and nice copies like this one are collectible. Bound in black cloth, book and dust jacket are in excellent condition. Yours for the minimum opening bid of $15.00 although it appears that he has a reserve on it higher than his opening bid. - --Steve - ------=_NextPart_000_0014_01C15CD5.0FDB3C20 Content-Type: I sincerely hope that Utah State prevails and the Arrington collection remains intact for future scholars. I agree that Arrington wouldn't have intentionally donated or included anything he felt belonged to the Church. I wish the Church would be less concerned about historical information. There will always be those "spin masters" on both sides of religious issues who will use the information to satisfy their own agendas. The important matter is to preserve these historical documents for the public. The Church stands by their claim and, as you can guess, so does USU. Most fascinating, however, is a list in the article of all the documents the Church wants back. Here's the link: http://www.sltrib.com/10262001/utah/143394.htm This is for the article - there's an additional link in the article to go to the list of documents. Lee's book, MORMONISM UNVEILED OR LIFE AND CONFESSION OF JOHN D. LEE (Albuquerque, New Mexico, Fierra Blanca Publications and University of New Mexico Press, 2001) 435 pages. HARDCOVER. The seller states, "only 500 copies were printed of the hardcover at $30 retail and many of them have bumped corners and other defects to the binding." Am wondering if anyone can comment on the quality of this reprint and whether there are substantial percentage of defective copies. I just received my copy as I won an earlier auction from the same seller. The hardback is like many these days, a paperback binding with hard covers attached. The covers are glossy pictorial. And it is just a reprint, there is no index. The book did come in perfect condition though. It is available on Amazon at %30 off which would be cheaper than the auction. I think a paperback copy is available too.
