That may be true and only time will tell. But the prediction from collectors that Deseret Book would be remaindering these for $10.00 in two years is far from correct. After being available for about 6 weeks, the Deseret Book retail stores are almost completely sold out of this. The bookclub still has around 4,000 and will probably start sending leftover copies to the retail stores in mid-November. I'd be surprised if these make it past Christmas. There were 10,000 printed and, despite speculation from collectors to the contrary, there are absolutely no plans to reprint it. And with this latest development (Brian is entirely correct, BTW - we received the inserts in our store on Wed. or Thurs.) the bar is raised for potential collectability. With the ability to have family members record their genealogy in the front and write ownership information, my prediction is that clean copies in their original boxes and packaging will be very difficult to find someday. It may take a few years to reach that status, but I believe it will. I can't think that the Mormon Book of Commandments has been showcased anywhere so stunningly as you have presented it. My personal guess is that the bidding will reach about $225,000, but my opinion on something so rarified means nothing in today's economy & circumstances, and twice your estimate, if realized, will not suspend the laws of gravity. Nothing so expensive threatens my self-control. But the temptation which will hound me from my bed is your item 66 - clearly something I can buy, but should not. acquired a small book or pamphlet, "Joseph Smith The Prophet-Teacher" written by Brigham H. Roberts with an introduction by Sterling McMurrin. BHR quotes out of a book called "Figures of the Past" written by Josiah Quincy in relationship to Joseph Smith. I am interested in buying a first edition of this quoted work but when I do a search, I receive listings for Figures of the Past and Figures of the Past: From the Leaves of Old Journals. Are both of these titles one in the same? I believe this book was republished in 1926 and 1st published in 1883. I don't know how to tell you how to find it, given the way it appears under the heading of "Joseph Smith in Nauvoo," - probably a nightmare to search - but it is record #646692 if you watch the little window at lower left of your screen. Or, if that does not work, do a search within quotes as follows: "it is by no means improbable" You will get many hits, since there are many citations from this account in Conference Reports and the like, but you will eventually come to it. We all know the inspirational parts of this narrative. Here is a part you don't hear quoted so often in Sunday School . . . << I should not say quite all that struck me about Smith if I did not mention that he seemed to have a keen sense of the humorous aspects of his position. "It seems to me, General," I said, as he was driving us to the river, about sunset, "that you have too much power to be safely trusted to one man." "In your hands or that of any other person," was the reply, "so much power would, no doubt, be dangerous. I am the only man in the world whom it would be safe to trust with it. Remember, I am a prophet!" The last five words were spoken in a rich, comical aside, as if in hearty recognition of the ridiculous sound they might have in the ears of a Gentile. I asked him to test his powers by naming the successful candidate in the approaching presidential election. "Well, I will prophesy that John Tyler will not be the next president, for some things are possible and some things are probable; but Tyler's election is neither the one nor the other." We then went on to talk of politics. . . .>> - ---------------------------------------------------------- - - LDS-Bookshelf, information and discussion of LDS books - - To unsubscribe, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with - - "unsubscribe lds-bookshelf" (without quotes) in the message body. - - For assistance, mail to "lds-bookshelf-owner@lists.xmission.com" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Nov 2001 21:54:34 -0700 From: "Albert Gardner" Subject: Re: [LDS-Bookshelf] Figures of the Past Phil-the visit with Joseph Smith is at the end of the book, pages 376-400. I bought this book over a month ago and I have been telling Mormon's every where about this new book of scripture, but I forgot to tell my brothers and sisters on LDS-Bookshelf. This scripture gives us writing that were sealed with Moroni (or was it Nephi) and now for the first time a Prophet has revealed them to us. This Prophet (or maybe it's profit) has pictures of the Urim and Thummim and his scribes writing down these precious words from ancient tablets. He even has pictures of his scribes who must be wives(?) or followers. Incredibly he shows us pictures of the tablets! Our Prophet is from the RLDS persuasion, but I am sure he is no longer a member. This incredible piece of scripture was sold to me by my good friend Hugh McKell. I believe Hugh would never lead me astray and I have found great joy in this new scripture. I hope all of you go out and buy this new discovery. I am sure your joy will be as complete as mine.
