It was in nice shape, minimal shelf ware to the corenrs and foot of the spine. The front hinge has seen better days and shows some early cracking, but the pages are all in tact. The book was signed on one of the FEP's by the following (I'm quoting the signatures, etc.): Chas. J. Sorenson Hyrum, Utah Willard Homer, Haden Fremont Co., Idaho James A. Andersen Laketown Utah Bruce Hamilton Calders Sta Utah Salt Lake Co. The signatures all appeared to be in the same fountain pen. It is an interesting item, and I have already spoken with the Church Missionary Dept. and Richard Turley about detrermining if the four men were Elders in the Northern States Mission around 1908. The signatures really make this an interesting copy, in my mind. Wonder why they all signed it?? I got this for $87. The Tanner Trust Fund and the J. Willard Marriott Library University of Utah Proudly Announce Volume XV of the series Utah, the Mormons, and the W est A Winter with the Mormons The 1852 Letters of Jotham Goodell - Edited by David L. Bigler - Preface by George Miles Jotham Goodell's letters, originally published at Portland in The Oregonian in 1852 and republished here for the first time, offer c onsiderable insight into the origins and character of the animosity between Mormons and those they called "Gentiles" in early Deseret and Utah Territory. Goodell's observations, made at a time of uneasy truce, help us understand fundamental conflicts that came to a head in 1857 when President Buchanan sent one-third of the federal army marching toward Salt Lake City in what has ever since been known as the Utah War. - George Miles Jotham Goodell on a Winter with the Mormons "With much regret we had been compelled to turn aside from our journey, and spend the winter among the Mormons," Oregon pioneer Jotham Goodell recalled in 1852. "Having been compelled to this decision, I resolved to pass the winter as quietly as possible." Goodell's winter with the Mormons turned out to be anything but peaceful. Jotham and "Annie" Goodell camped with their seven children during the winter of 1850-1851 in a tent and wagons on the Ogden River near the new Mormon settlements. Afterward, in nine detailed letters to The Oregonian newspaper at Portland, the Presbyterian minister angrily described their experiences and bitterly protested the persecution they suffered at the hands of Mormon authorities. Published in 1852, his reaction stands in sharp contrast to the often-f avorable opinions of Gold Rush emigrants who spent only a few days in Salt Lake Valley before hurrying on to the placer diggings along the west slope of the Sierra Nevada. Long ignored, Goodell's writings throw needed light on the nature of Mormon societ y as it existed during its early days in the Great Basin. They identify the earliest sources of conflict between the western theocracy and other Americans that led President Buchanan to order troops to Utah in 1857 to enforce federal authority. And they reflect the militant posture of the young millennial movement during the transition from the State of Deseret, an independent nation-state created in 1849, to an American territory with the unasked-for name of Utah. After leaving Ohio in spring 1850, the Goodells reached present Wyoming too late to attempt a crossing to Oregon and decided to winter on the fringe of new Mormon settlements. It was a decision they would regret. Not a rich man to begin with, Goodell became so impoverished by spring that he wa s unable to move his family without help from other emigrants. He expressed his outrage: "Were Brigham Young to come in person and tender back the money he robbed us of, there is not a man among us but would exclaim: 'Your money perish with you!'" Now republished for the first time, the letters of Jotham Goodell are required reading for anyone who wishes to understand the causes of controversy between a defiant territory, named after its native inhabitants, and its parent republic, prior to Utah statehoo d. As these letters make clear, the Latter-day Saints' belief that they would "reduce all nations and creeds to one political and religious standard" was a revolutionary task. Goodell's story provides a new perspective on one of America's most remarkable millennial movements and its inevitable conflict with the young republic in which it was born. David L. Bigler David L. Bigler is a native of Provo, Utah, and a naval veteran of World War II and Korea. He is the retired director of public affairs for U.S. Steel, now USX Corp. Benchmark should have copies in the store tomorrow or Monday at the latest. Red dj. Black cloth spine and red cloth over boards. Quite a striking looking book - designed by Will Bagley at the Prairie Dog Press and published thru OCTanner foundation of UoU. 1000 copies in the trade edition if I remember. Goodell was a contemporary of Nelson Slater of Fruits of Mormonism. Goodell published his experiences with the Oregonian and Bigler published it in book form for the first time with this book. Goodell did not have a happy time with the Saints and his account is colored in that direction for sure but nevertheless it gives us an idea of how gentiles viewed the saints in 1852. I think it is going to be a winner. hjm - ---------------------------------------------------------- - - LDS-Bookshelf, information and discussion of LDS books - - To unsubscribe, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with - - "unsubscribe lds-bookshelf" (without quotes) in the message body. - - For assistance, mail to "lds-bookshelf-owner@lists.xmission.com" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2001 11:30:03 -0800 From: "Phil" Subject: [LDS-Bookshelf] Question I have been trying to locate unbiased information on the history and genesis of the Palestinian crisis.
