AMERICA FORMING A PART OF THE LIBRARY OF E. D. CHURCH. NY, 1907. (5 vols.) Heaven only knows why Christies' would quote that wild statement from it. In the thriving economy of a couple years ago, I presume this copy - if as nice inside as the two pictures suggest - would have brought $70-80,000. Money back then was so loose, however, that it might even have brought more - it was anyone's guess. Today, on the other hand, it is anyone's guess . All I would say (and this will fall on deaf ears), is not to take whatever price it fetches too seriously. Would be happy to, but there are still so many people out there waiting for one for their collection (or one for each of their children). At one point, I had about eight people sitting and waiting for a first edition - individuals capable of wiring money instantly. The Book of Mormon languishing on my website is the first example in years I haven't been able to sell in about twenty minutes (okay, two hours - sometimes the person isn't at home). I received it for sale just in time to list it on the morning of September 11. That anomaly in the market can't last forever. We had a dip in the economy, but we will see the Book of Mormon back at recent prices within a reasonable period, I expect. The most expensive one I sold was an exceptional copy about two years ago, at $75,000, and I had two customers who wanted it. It was frustratingly amusing. They were close friends from childhood, and both such gentlemen that each feared offending the other by buying the book which they knew the other wanted! They were both private collectors whose motives were extremely spiritually-oriented (people of such substantial means that there was little if any thought of ever reselling the book). That would characterize the vast majority of people to whom I have sold 1830 Books of Mormon, in fact. At that time, I was told of a copy or two which had been sold for even more in Utah. However, that was second-hand information from a trusted source. I believed it when I heard it, but I can't prove it personally. Perhaps the copies were only offered in the $80s and I misunderstood.
