The best examiner for this test, we believe, is located in Avenal, CA. We propose the following schedule of use of club equipment to achieve our objective: Sunday 1/19 2:30 pm cease normal operations at Byron 3:00 pm aero-tow G103 to Avenal / Coalinga, field choice depends on weather Rolf towing, Fran Allender possibly coming along, Mike and Curt in G103 This is a 1:35 hour flight at 80 knots, which should get us there with about a half-hour margin before sunset. Monday 1/20 Flight exams aero-tow back to Byron before sunset Mike and I discussed disassembling the G103, ground towing, etc etc, but think that the above plan is the best compromise of all. Thanks to Fran Allender for bringing these to a resolution. One problem that has been looked at but NOT resolved is the ELT. The ELT is non-functional, has been removed from the plane, and has been checked by an outfit in San Jose (Thanks again Fran Allender). The result is that the ELT is NOT repairable, because it no longer meets current FAA requirements. Apparently, it was OK to fly with, but the FAA no longer authorizes these to be repaired when they need it. Fran has ordered another ELT and it should be here next week, however, it must be installed and approved by an A&P. Bob Hancock will be out of town until 2/20/97. Fran is scheduling Bob's time to have the ELT put back in the towplane when he returns. THEREFORE, according to Bob Hancock, we are legal to fly the towplane as long as we stay within a 50 mile radius of Byron, until the new ELT is installed and signed-off. Please observe this restriction when flying for the next month and of course plan for an alternative if there is the chance of a long retrieve.
