G103: airworthy repair work to be scheduled for gel coat cracks at a later date G102: expected to fly after Rolf inspects Hotellier connectors and flies it on Saturday afternoon Blanik AS: airworthy; annual will be scheduled as soon as EV is airworthy Blanik EV: As soon as the radio is installed and it is signed off by Bob Hancock, it is expected to fly. The 337 paperwork has been finished, but not submitted. 1-26: Unknown status should be back from Avenal; Contact Jim Alton Radio must be fixed by the factory. We can: 1. Buy a new one ~$1200 2. Send this one in for repair to Terra ~$300 The only strong opinion I have about this is that I think we should get a working radio in the 1-26 soon, because flying at Byron is much safer if you have a radio than if you don't. A couple of thoughts: Do we want to put a new radio in the 1-26? How long would it take to buy and install a new radio as opposed to having Terra repair and us reinstall the old one? I know it's not as exciting as the weak link topic was, but - any opinions? I propose Saturday April 26th starting at 9:30 AM at Byron. Let me hear if thereare any conflicts with this (silence is acquiescense). Some of the topics will be: - Finalize Maintenance Procedure - Finalize Gift Certificate - Disposition of ships for the summer - Wind festival participation - Introduction to the NCSA for residents of Discovery Bay Also, please keep in mind the safety seminar at Byron on April 19th. There are two repair flat rates -- minor and major. They were $300 and $400, I believe. I had the switches replaced on my Terra as well, two years ago, and they still work great. Terra was bought out by Trimble, so now Trimble repairs Terra radios. I spoke with the head technician at the repair shop to gain some insight into their operations. They all trained at Terra, gleaning as much information from the experienced technicians. Their turnaround on my radio was prompt -- only two weeks. I would strongly suggest repairing the radio. The cost is right, and the performance of these radios (when used with a quality electret microphone) is very good. Air Sailing has a memorial plot to honor those who in their life have done great things for soaring. His name can be added to the memorial stone at Air Sailing and a tree is planted in his honor. The there if a fee for perpetual care of the tree and the stone cutter. I think it is about $700. Les has sure done his share for soaring and deserves all we can do in his memory. Bob McKay ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: JimAlt777@aol.com Subject: SGS 1-26 trailer Date: 08 Apr 1997 02:32:54 -0400 (EDT) Just a late report on the status of the club's 1-26 trailer. I took the club's 1-26 to Avenal on 3/29. The trailer towed great. It is very stable in turns, over bumps, and even at high speed. (I explored the envelope when I towed it over Vasco Rd and Altamont Pass road without the glider the week before) I had no trouble towing at 65 mph on Interstate 5 with my 3000#, 2.2 liter, four cylinder car. (Climbing and decending hills was done at a lesiurely pace of less than 40 mph. with the glider) Big thanks to Wally Snow for installing new (used) tires. The wheel bearings were still cool to the touch after 200 mi @ 60-65 mph. One WARNING to anyone who uses the trailer in the future. You MUST put the tongue in the normal towing position, before pushing the fuselage all the way forward, or the nose of the glider will hit the articulated tongue mechanism. I still plan to do the following to complete the work on the trailer: 1) Mandatory - Prepare written loading / unloading instructions and place in the storage box. 2) Mandatory - Procure a 3/8" shackle to attach the safety chain (the chain is very fat) If someone has one to donate, it would save the club money. 3) Mandatory - Procure / Fabricate a container or tool roll to hold the main spar bolts when the glider is in transit. 4) Optional - Modify the main spar attachment bolts to hold the wings in the vertical direction (with rubber inserts to prevent damage to the spar. 5) Optional - Procure, (with the board's approval, tools to assemble and disassemble the plan and leave them in the box. 6) Optional - Replace the bolt that holds the tail with a shear pin and retaining clip. 7) Optional - Attach the bottom half of the drag link saddle clamps to the angle iron to ease wing attachment. 8) Optional - Replace the stacks of washers which space the drag link attachment angle with a more aesthetically pleasing shim. I won't be able to get to these for several weeks. If you want to use the trailer before then, let me know & I'll work on the instructions and let you work on the other items. That way they fit into the flow better. They pay the instructor directly for the cost of the flight. You can fly them yourself as long as you stay within the bounds of splitting the cost of the flight according to FAA private pilot regs. Saturday (4/19) is our Annual Safety Seminar, so the G103 will be busy and we don't have a way of getting feedback remotely from our reservation/answering machine. If they're coming out with you they will have to chance it. If you call them from Byron in the AM, you should know the schedule at that time. In any case let's get them out and up before the G103 goes to the Sierras. Regards, Marty ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: martym@lan.nsc.com (Martin S Michael) Subject: Field Manager Duty Date: 25 Apr 1997 16:13:45 PDT Hi Folks, We've been having numerous "no shows" lately when it comes to field managers. I'll admit that the schedule for 1997 (after March) got out a couple weeks late, but Bob Addis has been phoning field managers who were scheduled recently and mailing reminders to them on an individual basis. The current schedule covers the rest of 1997. If you don't know when you are field manager at this point in time, see the posted schedule in the clubhouse or call Bob directly or call the clubhouse on the weekend about 10 and ask somebody to tell you when you are FM. It was also published to this reflector and will be published in the Buzzard. Participating in the field manager position is a club requirement unless you are a designated instructor or tow pilot. Usually people do it about twice a year. If you can't make it, you must call members and find a substitute. There is a set of tasks for the field manager posted in the clubhouse above the phone for before, during and after the flying day. These things are not too onerous and are mostly common sense. However, they make the flying day a safer, more efficient and a nicer experience for everyone. I don't want to go over-board here, but it really is a problem when the field manager is a no show and people who have already done their duty as FM have to pick up the slack. Consequently, since the FM schedule is posted in the clubhouse, please call Bob Addis if the scheduled field manager is a no show and he will follow-up with that person. Thanks in advance for your cooperation, Marty ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: martym@lan.nsc.com (Martin S Michael) Subject: Board Meeting / Safety Seminar Follow-up/ Byron Update Date: 28 Apr 1997 16:14:28 PDT Fellow Flyers, BOARD MEETING: The next board meeting is this coming Saturday 5/3 at 9:30 AM at Byron. I'll publish an agenda by Wed. SAFETY SEMINAR FOLLOW-UP: If you did not attend the safety seminar given by the instructors on 4/19/97, you should review the topics covered WITH AN INSTRUCTOR prior to flying club planes (accidents during various phases of flight, accident statistics, landing patterns, emotional states and their effect on pilot performance, hookup procedures prior to tow, towing, etc.). This is a requirement passed by the board. BYRON UPDATE: A fun day on Saturday. Numerous thermals to ~4000 ft. Flights were 2-3+ hours in duration. Sunday a little wave, lots of rotor, lots of students, and a couple of commercial glider pilots (referred by Monique), who may join. All planes are flying, but the 1-26 is still waiting for a few motivated people to assemble it. How about Irv P, Jim A and others after the board meeting on Saturday? AS will probably have its annual in the next few days. Fran A and Bill B are scheduled to do the prep today.
