Date: 05 May 1997 15:33:42 -0700 The current private tow pilot waiver runs out May 31. I contacted the SSA to receive the new one, and they don't expect to receive it from the FAA before May 15. I will contact the SSA again shortly after that date. Note that the new FAR part 61 (which takes effect Aug 4) should eliminate the need for the exemption. As such the new one from the FAA is expected to be effective for only a few months. I'm not sure what else is changing in part 61, but it may not be a bad idea to read through it and see if there are any major suprises. (At least its not part 91!!!) Date: 05 May 1997 19:17:58 -0700 I took my glider up to Truckee on Saturday morning. For those of you who are interested here's a look at how things are on the ground and in the air. The snow is melting early this year. The snowline is already at 8 - 9,000ft and going quickly. This means an early start to the Seirra season. On Saturday afternoon conditions were good with climbs to 12,000ft at Mount Rose. Cu's were lined up down the Pine Nuts and some people were at Yerrington & Mount Patterson at 14,000ft. I had one climb of 10kt average and several others of 6-8kt. Sunday was a blue but still had some good climbs, enough for some extended local soaring to Castle Peak, Seirraville and Loyalton. More was possible, but I needed to get home so kept the flight short. Truckee has installed a new phone line that will replace the radio phone in a week or so. There is also a shiney new oxygen cart made by Dean Aldinger. This can be towed to the glider, so no more shuffling everything to get to the cart. I also visited Airsailing to pick up my Travel Trailer. The best access is from Winnemuca Ranch Rd. (West access). There is one dip filled with loose gravel where there was a wash out, but I had now problem pulling the travel trailer through it. The east access road is very rough this year & not the best option. People are getting active at Airsailing too. Several people were out flying last weekend. We had a strong thermals to about 5,000 feet. Various people stayed up for 2-3 hours. This is the good part of Spring, so come out and fly before some of the planes go to the Sierras this summer. The Board also met on Saturday and approved that the G103, G102 and Blanik AS go to the Sierras around June 1st. People who are planning to use these planes at Thermalling, Cross Country Camps or Truckee are responsible to arrange the transportation of the planes from Byron. Bruce Roberts will publish the Board Meeting minutes shortly. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We will have a booth and Ken P will display his Grob at the San Ramon Wind Festival on May 25 and May 26 (Memorial Day). This is a big opportunity for our club to attract new members. When we did this about 2 years ago we had over 300 people sign up to receive information from us. At that time we were NOT able to effectively follow-up, however this year we have club information pamphlets, 2 new instructors, 2 Blaniks and a G103 to use for intro rides. We may also, have gift certificates available, if we finalize all of the legal aspects by then. The San Ramon Wind Festival is a fun event for the whole family. Volunteers would basically be asked to talk to people about soaring and pass out club literature for 4 hours on one of the two days. Or more if you have the time. Spouses are welcome to help too. We have a about 6 people now, but probably need about 10 more (4 people x 4 shifts), because Ken's glider will attract a lot of curious spectators. So plan to come out and spend 4 hours promoting soaring and our club and then tour the rest of the Wind Festival. Also if anyone can make it early in the morning on Sunday (5/25) to help put Ken's glider together that would help. Please respond to this reflector or call myself or Bob Addis if you can volunteer some time. Board members will be calling everyone this week to see if you are available. I've always been told that Autogas is bad because of its lower vapor pressure (so I've been told) than Avgas. This can supposedly be a problem on hot days at altitude. A counterpoint is that tows typically end at fairly low altitude (<8K for my very limited experience at C83). A lot of people seem to run on it without problem, so they is likely as much myth associated with its use as fact. Well, thats the sum of my ignorance ... I would say the best people to ask are one's who are actually using it. As I recall, it requires 91 octane autogas, which tends to negate some of the cost savings & availability. I looked into this once for the Tiger, but never followed up. -- -Mark ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jetace1@aol.com Subject: Re: Autogas STC Date: 07 May 1997 01:57:40 -0400 (EDT) Oh, let me add my two cents. Rob Sprinkle's point about the lower vapor pressure is true, but, as he noted, I don't think it should be a problem for us do to our specific circumstances. Please note that many glider operations are actually operating off of Autogas STCs. Soar Hollister, Seminole Lake, and Rex Mayes place up North just to name a few. However, it should be taken into great consideration the benefits versus the costs. For instance, where will we store this autogas? We would probably need to purchase a pickup truck with a DOT approved fuel tank on the back, or some other suitable storage/transportation/dispensing system. I honestly don't know if lowering our variable operating costs with autogas will offset the purchase of such a setup within a reasonable amount of time. In Hollister, Drew already had an old pickup truck which he placed the tank on. If you really want to pursue the issue, I would recommend calling Rex Mayes to discuss cost savings and maybe Gary Brown (I have his number) to discuss the effects of switching to autogas. Hope this doesn't add too much fuel to the fire. He can't use his own ship since it has U/C problems keeping it grounded. Use of club ships for this purpose has traditionally been OK'd by the board for participating club members. As your esteemed team captain, I would certainly appreciate everyones understanding in giving Bruce the OK to use the 102 for the weekend. He has all the club pre-requisites for cross country, and has been venturing forth in his own ship, especially at Williams. Ken Pruchnick is not available as an alternative team member (he was the first choice novice fot the Avenal event) as he is taking ownership of his not-so-novice ASW27. If Bruce can't use the 102 we have an incomplete team to represent us. Also, Ken Pruchnick got the 1-26 radio repaired (~$400), but it needs to be reinstalled. I left it next to the 1-26 battery in the clubhouse (Thanks, Ken). We got a lot of volunteers for the Wind festival. Bob Addis and I will be calling everyone this week with the time slots. So far we only have 3 people whocan help assemble the glider on Sunday morning. We need 1-2 more to be able to do this easily. Can anyone meet Ken at 8:30 AM in at San Ramon? AS was assembled late Sunday, after good thermalling most of the day (lots of thermals to 2400' west wind (10-15 kts.). The AS wing tip tie downs were welded (Thanks Mike S for arranging). Also, Mike S signed-up a new intro. member, Bill(last name?). The G102 was disassembled for transport to Avenal. Board Meeeting Minutes will be published this week - sorry for the delay (Bruce sent them to me last week) and I haven't had a chance to add to them yet. Also, I found out the hard way that if you use a Telex headset in the G103 and plug in both the headset microphone and speakers, it automatically makes the microphone voice activate the radio transmitter. So, much to my chagrin, I not only explained boxing the wake to my passenger, but also to everyone else on theByron CTAF! Ken P will look into rewiring the plug receptacle, but until it is fixed just plug-in the microphone of the headset and use the speaker in the plane. Don't plug in the headset speakers. I've NOT checked the club's headset and mike for this problem, but they probably operate the same way. John Apps has been in touch with the FAA and there is going to be a revised AD soon. One can look at Knauff & Grove web pages to see what the different possibilities are. In fact, I had two people looking to switch last weekend (Gustaffson was one of them, just seven names down from you). In the meantime, I've taken the liberty to put you back in the rotation, you're now scheduled for Saturday, June 14th (Greenhill is unavailable that day and was looking for a sub......you just made his day). Club boiler plate.....As always, it's YOUR responsability to find a substitute if you can't make this date. Give me a call with the name so I can update the schedule and know who is on the hook for that day. Also, it is a club obligation to participate as field manager and in mandatory club events like clean-up day (you'll find the exact words in the contract, obligation, disclaimer or whatever you want to call it that you signed when you joined the club). The club members rely on your participation since we are not an FBO. Absent Field Managers have been a problem for us, it's not fair to the person that plans on flying and gets stuck with the responsability, we really need to get back in the habit of FM'ing. On a personal note, I look to you to help lead by example certainly as a senior pilot and club mentor. If you would like to arrange some other volunteer activity you can approach the board with your proposal (usually on a weekend day at Byron). And speaking for myself, I will support any reasonable proposal. Hope nobody had to cancel any flights. Anyone on the temporary tow pilot list who wishes to become a regularly scheduled tow pilot should contact me within the next week. I have already called everyone on the list once, but I want to make sure everyone gets a chance. Slots will be opening up due to some members who have for various reasons, had to switch to the alternate list. Ken Ferguson will be filling one of those slots, but there are still a couple of openings. Also, anyone who knows of someone who would like to become an alternate should e-mail me. However, PLEASE inform them first that they MUST have an absolute minimum of 100 hours in tailwheel aircraft, and it would be preferable if they were a licensed glider pilot. I appreciate the help. I flew 4116Y to Livermore around 11:30 am and Steve Brown inspected the brake system. No fluid was observed in the clear plastic lines coming down from the master cylinder. (I learned something here.) These hoses (about a quarter inch in diameter) should be red with fluid -- it's obvious when you look at it. Steve back-filled the lines with brake fluid using a pump gizmo. Thank you Steve! (cost: $10.00 + 30% gratuity = $13.00) Steve did not mention (and I forgot to ask) what might cause the brakes to lose fluid. We probably should follow up on this. A big thanks for taking the time and effort to fly the airplane over to Steve and get it fixed. It's great to know that Steve was able to really come through and get us out of trouble so quickly. However, now I'm curious. When Ken Ferguson and I left the plane last Sunday, the brakes were performing without fail. In fact, the last thing I did on Sunday was use differential braking to swing the tail backward toward the hangar, using the left brake which worked as it has every other time. The only explanations I can come up with are: 1. Something is causing the fluid to drain from the lines. If this is true, one would think there would be brake fluid on the hangar floor however. 2. Someone flew the towplane or worked on it between last Sunday and Saturday, and did not mention the problem. I would appreciate any input from people who may know what might be causing this. I honestly can't say that I've ever seen this before. I've already spoken to one A and P who told me that the brake system is a closed loop and the introduction of air is not a common occurence. Translation as follows; "Yoodamen" is plural of "Yoodaman". "Yoodaman" is an ancient abbreviation (ebonics?) for "you're the man" which translated into the modern idiom means; "Wow-what-a-great-flight-you-guys-are-so-awesome" Typically, only 1-26 pilots earn this accolade. I thought everyone knew this, Bruce.......:-) Actually its a joke Curt and I came up with at Avenal; Curt did very well completing a 126 ml course in his 1-26. He-the-man. He would pick it up from Truckee and return it to Truckee. Questions (1) Yes or No (2) If we had a land out in that time could we use Soar Truckee's to retrieve our Grob (3) rental charges. I will be at Truckee on Saturday so I can talk with Jan about their trailer as a backup. I would like board input so I can call him back....
