However, I have not flown since Fathers Day due to heavy usage of the Blanik during the summer (at Byron), and it became very frustrating to wait around for 4-6 hours for a 20 minute flight. I have really enjoyed meeting all the club members and the "hanger" flying. The flying has been fun also. I enjoy helping out on the flight line, but I reached my saturation point. I had hoped to get my ticket by July and make my debut at Truckee. Alas, I am now waiting for the fall and the return of the other Blanik to accomplish my goal. I resumed flying sailplanes after a 16 hiatus, so I guess another month wont hurt. I'm looking forward to flying again, but hopefully without having to spend all day for one flight. I'm probably not the only new member who has similar frustrations. If we hope to retain all these new members, we have to find a way to accommodate more entry level fliers. Especially since safety is one of our main goals and frequent flying not only builds skills but confidence. I want to continue to help out NCSA, so any suggestions to better support our growth of new flyers? Respectfully, Steve Townsend ---------- > From: William H. I've enjoyed the past two months of instructing, and the students out there have made it fun for me, for they have had loads of enthusiasm. Of all the problems the club could have, having too many students is one of the best to have! (Don't you agree?!!) I agree, though, that waiting four to six hours to get a bit of air time is not the most effective use of someone's time. Let me pose a few suggestions, and maybe someone more apt at scheduling logistics can take my comments, refine them, and solve this scheduling problem. Ground Zero (i.e. Status Quo): First come, first serve. This is great to some extent, worked in the past pretty well, but on August 2nd if you were to have shown up at 9:30am, you were going to be FIFTH IN LINE for the ship. No kidding! This is not a Happy Place To Be. Door Number One: For those students only flying once on the weekend, choose one regular day and stick to it. We can try to balance the load between Saturday's and Sunday's. This past weekend is an example -- six people wanted to fly Saturday, and four on Sunday. Note too, that the instructors follow this fashion. If you prefer to fly with one instructor over another (for example, lighter instructors like Richard make spin instruction more exciting) you should stick to a specific day. I would guess that the schedule this fall may be the same as that in the Spring: Saturday = Richard Pearl / Curt Laumann Sunday = Mike Schneider / Rolf Peterson Alternates: Paul Kinzelman / Bill Reuland Door Number Two: Split the day into an early shift 9am - 1pm, and a late shift 1pm - 5pm. (We really have been arriving at 9am this past month in order to accomodate everyone.) Three students could come early, and three late. Door Number Three: Computer based reservation system. Door Number Four: Touch-tone phone based reservation system. Door Number Five: Hire an answering service to handle our reservations. This was done by the Flying Particles Club when I flew with them several years ago (here in Livermore) and worked pretty well. I can't comment on the cost, though. Option W: Wait for the second Blanik and hope this problem goes away. This problem will certainly be mitigated by a second ship, but nonetheless the club could still improve on the first-come, first-served system. ... a general point. The simpler the system, the less to go wrong, yields the highest probability of success. The WWW system could be pretty slick, for example, but depends on the most variables to work right (and not everyone has a computer, of course). Should work just fine beginning in the fall. Thanks for the (undeserved) compliment re. "lighter" instructor. BTW, I can remember in the recent past when we've closed Byrin down for Auguest because of a lact of flying interest. Things have certainly changed, and certainly for the better. New members are the lifeblood of any organization, and we should keep up the search. More memebers means more money which means more ships which means more members.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: svmes@halley.ca.essd.northgrum.com (Mike Schneider) Subject: Mike Green out of hospital, doing OK Date: 05 Aug 1997 14:27:24 -0700 NCSAers: Mike Green is out of the hospital and resting at home after sustaining a cracked L1 vertebre during a landout late last month during the Sports class Nationals at Minden. While Bob Hancock was stop drilling the crack yesterday it, he discovered that the rear aluminum support tube for the canopy was also cracked at the point where the crack in the plexiglass starts. Flying the plane in this condition could further damage the canopy. Therefore it is grounded until this can be repaired. There is a possibility that we can have this rod repaired by late tomorrow night, but due to the late discovery of this new problem it may by impossible toschedule and execute all of the things that need to happen prior to Saturday. I will send a note out to this reflector and inform Curt Laumann of the status Friday night. So if you were planning to fly the Blanik this weekend please read your email first, call me to find out the status, or call Curt to find out the status. Let me say thanks to Curt for grounding the plane immediately after this happened on Sunday. There's a good possiblility that it prevented further damage to the canopy. The last time we had to replace a Blanik canopy it cost >$1000 and took months to do it, because they are not easy to get. So... I've been out to Byron a number of times, since June and each there have been a lot of enthusiastic students training on the Blanik with Curt from 9 AM till well into the evening. Let me start by saying welcome to the club and thanks for perservering during the long days of summer - you situation has NOT gone unnoticed. I was further impressed when Curt told me that he has averaged 13 instructional flights every weekend day since the beginning of June. Others in the club and myself are working on the following: 1. I've asked Irv P. to organize the return of the Blanik AS to Byron immediately after Labor Day weekend. He has agreed to do this. We might aerotow it back to Byron with the Scout or we might take it apart on Labor Day and tow it back via the trailer. In either case we will need to have the trailer brought back to Byron. If you can help Irv Powalka that weekend, please call him soon. 2. I have the computerized reservation system that Steve MacRobert has been working on. All of the members names will be put on it by the end of this weekend and I should finish testing it by the end of next week. This system enables any member via phone to query the computer and find out which planes are open at which times. This will be set up over Labor Day weekend or sooner if someone else has the time between 8/14 and 8/31. 3. In Sept. we will try to have 2 instructors and 2 Blaniks flying each weekend day that it is warranted. This will cause us to have another immediate problem and that is an over-utilized towplane. I've asked several people in the club recently, to let me know about other towplanes that we could rent. So if anyone knows of any towplane possibilities, please contact me ASAP. Thanks for all of your support this year from the senior members and the enthusiasm from the new members. All of this is possible, mostly because, we are flying safely. If you are not sure, ask a question; if you're not current fly with an instructor and if you don't know the airport get a checkout ride. Bernald indicates that the earliest it would be possible would be in 2003 due to the bidding system. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED in this, Region 11 must have "something" in the SSA office by Aug. 25, 1997 indicating we would like to participate in the bid, because the SSA is likely to discuss this at the upcoming SSA Director's meeting in Sept. '97. Please contact Bernald Smith as soon as possible, if you are interested in helping this process along in any way. This does not commit us to a bid, but rather leaves the door open for a bid. Note that selection of a suitable site will be the biggest hurdle. The airport management at Minden has made it clear that a Worlds is out of the question at that particular site. Ty White ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mike-i green Subject: Accident Date: 08 Aug 1997 14:00:48 -0700 Hi Everyone, The sports class Nationals was not a good contest for me. It looks like our 20 may be totaled. Larry Mansberger did such a good job refinishing it and then I had to ding it. Several things went wrong for me. I feel I was incorrectly penalized for turn point pictures for two tasks. I put in a protest for my score on day 5 and am appealing the decision to the SSA contest board. I missed two days flying due to a seam rupturing on my tail ballast tank. I took me two days to replace the tank with some molded lead weights. I landed out one day mainly due to my vario switch falling off the stick so I was unable to switch quickly from cruise to climb mode. Thank you all for email and phone calls. Thursday July 24 Last Day of the Sports Class Nationals Task - 3 hr post - Yerington designated as 1st turnpoint. My tow was initiated at 1332. I went through the gate at 1417. I had made the turnpoints; Yerington, Hawthorne, Schurz, and Yerington and was heading back to Minden Tahoe Airport. I reached an altitude of ~13,000 above the sand pits at the ridge west of Yerington and headed back towards Minden. I did a little exploring to the north and to the south and finally decided to go through the notch in the Pine Nut Mountains. At the notch in the Pine Nut Mountain range I was at an altitude of ~9,000 ASL which should have been adequate for me to reach Minden Tahoe Airport with more than enough altitude to got through the finish gate, make a decent pattern and land. I ran into severe downdrafts on my way in. About 6 statute miles from the airport I saw a brown field to my left that looked large enough to make a decent landing. I felt that my altitude was marginal to make the airport, especially taking into consideration the possibility of further downdrafts, and decided to attempt to land in the field. I had too much energy to go straight in and not enough energy to make a pattern. I put down my gear, pulled out the spoilers and made S turns. At some point I must have experienced another downdraft and impacted the ground at a slight angle. I think I made three bounces before the glider was stationary. Local people were there almost immediately. They helped me get out of the ship. I radioed that my ship was damaged and gave the location of my landing. An ambulance came and brought me to the Clinic at Gardnerville. They took X-rays, some blood and decided that I had to go to Reno for treatment at the Washoe Medical Center. I was taken by Helicopter ambulance to Washoe medical Center in Reno where more x-rays a cat scan were taken plus more blood. My Potassium level is low. I have a fractured L1 vertebrae but it doesnt look like I have any internal injuries. I am told that I could probably go home this weekend. During this whole period, my crew, Francis Allender couldnt have been more helpful. After getting to my ship he requested more help to get it into the box. He also found the time to visit me Thursday evening at the hospital at Reno. Friday July 25 Sue Flies up to Reno. I am having problems making a bowel movement. Apparently, with an injury of this type there is the possibility that blood is drawn away from the intestines to the injury and the intestines stop working. Two FAA people visit me in the evening and ask questions. Saturday July 26 They put a thing down my nose into my stomach and keep my stomach empty. I have this thing into my stomach until Tuesday Morning. On Monday I start having bowel movements again. I get a Jewette backbrace which I have to wear to get out of the bed. I will have to wear the back brace for 8 to 12 weeks. Monday July 28 I am told that I can be discharged tomorrow. We call Bill and he will fly up so he can take me home lying down on the bed in our motor home. I contact our Hull insurance people. They say they will send forms to me at home. Tuesday July 29 Bill Flies up to Reno. Sue and he drive to Minden to get the Motor home. I leave the hospital about 3 pm lying on the bed in the motor home. Bill drives me home and Sue follows in the Baretta. I also ask Bill to take stuff out of the trailer in case the insurance company decides to total the ship. Saturday August 2 I finish filling out the NTSB and insurance forms and mail them in. Friday August 8 I am still waiting to hear from the insurance adjuster. My back is stronger and not aching as much. |---------------------------------------------------------------| | Dr. Mike I. Date: 11 Aug 1997 09:55:46 -0400 (EDT) I checked out the battery for the G102. The voltage was a healthy 14+ volts, however the connector on the battery was an older style flat 4pin trailer connector. It took a little finagaling and quite a bit of strength to plug it into the newer connectors on two of our chargers. I installed a new connector on the 102 battery, but did not test it. If anyone flys it during the week leave a note & let me know if there still is a problem. I plan to be @ soar Truckee on Saturday next week if additional work is needed. On a separate subject, I would like to practice some patterns in the G103 Saturday morning. We had the transponder on while we were near Reno, but I never saw the interrogate light illuminate. Does anyone have suggestions on how we should check to make sure it's working? The only way I can think of which doesn't involve spending money is for the next person who gets close enought to Reno, to call Reno Approach and ask them if they see us? How close/high would we have to be? My guess is we need line of sight contact, so if we can see Reno's field, they should be able to see us. Suggestions are welcome. Jim Alton ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill Brown Subject: G102 battery Date: 11 Aug 1997 9:00:03 PDT I was in TRK on 8/4 and 8/5. Although I did not fly the 102, I helped Bob Johnson, who had trouble with a flat battery. There are 2 problems with the 102 battery: 1. There was a wire broken off the + terminal. I re-soldered it well enough that it works, but the Soar Truckee iron was not hot enough and the solder joint is definitely cold. If someone has a decent soldering iron, they should re-solder the connections to the battery. 2. The female connector (trailer hitch style) attached to the battery (as opposed to the male connector on the ship) has 4 terminals: 2 plus 14 and 2 ground. One of the plus 14 terminals is intermittent. The connector itself should be replaced. regards, Bill Brown ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: PRUCHNICK@aol.com Subject: Re: G103 transponder Date: 11 Aug 1997 13:25:49 -0400 (EDT) You do not have to see Reno or have line of sight for approach to see you and for you to get a reply light. I think they have repetter antennas for the valleys around Reno. But you may have been to low to get a interrogation? The reply light is just that, when the transponder recives a interrogation from the radar site it replys with the code you have dialled in, and the pressure altitude from the encoder in 100 foot increments (the radar site will convert that to MSL). I assume you had it on ALT or ON and not on SBY standby, but the Terra may not have a standby because it is all solid-state design. There is also a TEST that checks some functions in the unit and the reply light will light. When you IDENT the repty light will be on for 20 seconds. Perhaps the antenna cable is off at the antenna or the antenna is broken that happens a lot to aircraft after being service or after the ship has been washed. I will be at Truckee this weekend and will look at it. I can also remove it and get it bench checked on Monday K P ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: KCTK14A@prodigy.com (MR ROBERT L SEMANS) Subject: Bayside Radio Repair Date: 11 Aug 1997 13:57:00, -0500 Can anyone make a good recommendation for a radio repair shop for Bayside radios? A pilot's meeting will be held at 9:00 in the Raven's Nest next to the office, inside the main airport building. Entry fee is nominal for Region 12 Members, or become a member on the day of the contest. The winner receives a great looking Dust Devil Dash T-shirt which is uniquely hand created to honor the winning pilot for each year. The rules are simple. Grid whenever you like. Take a tow of 3500' or less. Fly as far as you can in any direction. Get a landing witness to sign your landing card and mail it from the nearest post office. The pilot with the longest handicapped distance will be declared the winner. Team flying and helping other pilots and crews is encouraged. Relights are allowed, but bad attitudes are not. There will be no high paying product endorsement contracts for the winner of this event. Any sailplane is competitive in this contest because of the handicap. It has been won some years by racing glass, and others by rivet wings (1-26). Last year the turn out was not large, but there were still a number of good flights up the Owen's Valley, some as far as Bishop, Mina, and Hawthorne. For the seasonal Mojave Desert pilots who pack it up after Labor Day, stick around for another weekend and fly the Dash. The worst thing that can happen is that you land in Idaho and have a long trailer drive back to Hemet or wherever your winter base is. This is fun flying and should be enjoyed by all. See you in Tehachapi. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bob Addis" Subject: Re: Field Manager - 2nd noti Date: 18 Aug 1997 14:49:26 -0700 Mail*Link(r) SMTP RE>Field Manager - 2nd notice! Fran says that they were installing the modem line for the new gas pump at the fuel depot and may have inadvertently disconnected our phone. Fran asked the firemman (Mark) to look into it. The operator checked it for me and says " the phone is off the hook". We have 2 phones and an answering machine connected, if you are there on Saturday and it's not working, try disconnecting all of them and then reconnecting them 1 at a time to see if 1 of the units has failed. Bob Hancock has replaced 2 gauges (exhaust manifold and cylinder head temp.) in the towplane, with new ones. He also discovered that a few gear teeth on the starter are missing, possibly due to someone using the starter while the engine was already running. They had a bunch of one year old golf carts that were trade-ins from the Pebel Beach Golf Course. Pebel Beach charges $275.00 for around of golf so they can afford to get new carts every year! The carts are in very good shape and come with a charger . For these they are asking $2250.00 + tax . They also have 1995 models for $1500.00 with charger. On the safty belts for the Grob I found the name Pacific Scientific in Anaheim, Ca. underneath the Grob sticker. The original manufacture of the belts. Apparently they are made here in California then shipped to Germany. I found the company on the computer and called . They quoted $154.00 each, so I will send the belts to them by UPS on Tuesday. Using the reflector to answer a specific message adds several nuisance messages a day to the e-mail of members, all of whom have to read and/or delete the messages that are not of interest to them. This lack of e-mail etiquette adds to the large load of messages which many of us have to deal with at work on otherwise productive time. Sometimes this adds significant phone costs while on travel. Of course announcements, safety messages and various requests for help are welcome and should be encouraged, as well as anything else of general interest. Some questions for you: Does this place in Hayward sell chargers? If so, how much are they? Also, did you see any electric ones for sale that were in the $1,000 range? The $1500 1995 models are probably closer to our budget limit that the former Pebble Beach ones, depending on the cost of a charger. Matthews" Subject: Re: e-mail etiquette Date: 26 Aug 1997 19:19:05 -0700 To help encourage such e-mail etiquette (as Bill Reuland so eloquently covered), replies to messages from this mailing list will now be directed by default to the message originator. (Victims of AOL and other poorly executed mail gateways will also note that the From: line of their messages is incorrect, they have to look down at the bottom of the message for the Internet headers which contain the real originator of the message.) What this means is that you, the responsible mailing list user, will have to MAKE A DECISION when replying to a message. Ask yourself: "Is my reply correctly and completely written for the reading of the other 60 people of the list? Or is it of really only of interest to the person I'm replying to?" The effort that you put into your reply should be commensurate with the number of expected recipients. Quality, not quantity, is the measure of a successful mailing list. If you do choose to reply to the entire list, the correct way to do so is to REPLACE the address on the To: line with the list address. DO NOT add it to the other name, DO NOT put it in the Cc: field. To do so will cause the recipients to receive two copies of the same message, which usually causes confusion and complaints to the list administrator about the "list is broken". The list administrator hates this. DO NOT put other recipients in the Cc: field if you know that they are also on the mailing list, for the same reason given above. It generates two copies of the same message for that person. -- -Mark ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: PRUCHNICK@aol.com Subject: Re: Golf cart / seat belts Date: 26 Aug 1997 22:57:30 -0400 (EDT) Marty The chargers are included in the price.
