I am curious to know if there has been a problem that has been mitigated by taping the static ports. The risk from a low time pilot flying without clearing the ports is high, because the airspeed indicator becomes an altimeter! I appreciate the fact that dust or rain might get in the ports. However, I have not experienced this problem, and I think the trade off of risk favors a preflight of the static ports for dust and debris and an occasional check of the static system for condensation rather than disabling the static system. A pitot cover can be helpful to keep out wasps on an airplane. In this case the consequence of not removing the cover is an indication of zero airspeed. This indication is immediately recognized as wrong, so the pilot knows not to believe it. Also, pitot covers have big long red ribbons on them making the liklihood of leaving them on somewhat less than forgetting to take white tape off of the static ports. If you insist on taping the static ports, consider using red tape. Bill Reuland ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: svmes@halley.ca.essd.northgrum.com (Mike Schneider) Subject: re: taping static ports Date: 04 Sep 1997 15:25:35 -0700 NCSAers: OK, I'll put in my two cents on this one. Taping static ports has proven to be quite important on the G-103. Each and every time it rains, the static ports become clogged, resulting in inaccurate airspeed and altimeter readings. It has happened many, many times. We also had an instance earlier this summer of some sort of insect nest in the pitot tube, which was completely invisible during pre-flight and subsequent post-flight inspections, which caused the G-103 airspeed to read incorrectly. Taping the static ports and pitot, at least on the G-103 is a good trade-off. As part of his G-103 checkout, I personally instructed Jim to be sure to tape the static ports/pitot after the day's useage. It's important. The use of red tape is a wonderful suggestion. Standard white tape is too easy to miss on pre-flight and could cause problems. Some sort of obvious pitot tube cover is also a good idea. I'll pick up the red tape on my way home tonight, the pitot cover will be more difficult, since a standard Cessna/Piper cover won't work. Mike Schneider ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Wreuland@aol.com Subject: Correction to my last e-mail Date: 04 Sep 1997 20:58:36 -0400 (EDT) I should have said that if the static source is blocked, the airspeed will change calibration with altitude and the variometer also will not read correctly. This can be distracting to the pilot and has been known to contribute to accidents. If the pitot is blocked, the decreasing static pressure with altitude can cause the airspeed to read like an altimeter. I will leave the physics and checking the math to the reader, but it looks like about 215 kts per psi pressure drop. So at 2000 ft., the indicated airspeed would be around 200 kts with the pitot blocked and the static ports open. I think my point is still valid concerning not blocking the static source. Leaks in the pitot side of the ASI system probably prevent light plane pilots from killing themselves by leaving the pitot cover on. At least one airliner crashed from an iced up pitot which indicated too high an airspeed. The pilot kept increasing the pitch and stalled while climbing in instrument weather. Late in the afternoon we were able to watch his entire flight against a nice array of cirrus. Gavin performed a good take-off on runway 23, into a fifteen knot wind. Off tow we saw him do medium-banked turns, and then a few straight-ahead stalls. Date: 23 Sep 1997 10:01:51 -0700 (PDT) Just a little reminder to everyone: Sunday night, after everyone from NCSA went home, I got a little surprise. The staging area we use at the second taxiway for runway 30 was not cleaned up. All the taxiway markers were still pulled out and lying on the ground, the umbrella was left standing, and there were empty water bottles and soda cans strewn about by the runway identifier sign. Jani (the drop zone owner)was nice enough to help me clean everything up. Just wanted to let everyone know. Date: 23 Sep 1997 12:15:39 PDT Thanks for pointing this out to us Robert. There are a lot of good things that come from being viewed as a "good neighbor". If you're one of the last people flying, whether or not a field manager is present, please ensure that we've put the runway markers back in the holes and picked up any trash we've generated. If a field manager is present, please help that person do this after you've finished flying. This is the first oversight that I've heard of, since we're flying on the new runways, so I think it's just something to keep ion the "back of your mind". Up to two people could come along. We will leave TRK by about 5pm (unless you want to jump out until I've done 3 night landings). Call me at 408-227-1415 if you are interested. -- -- It's not a blimp hangar, it's a dirigible hangar. A Koala is not a bear, it's a marsupial. Rich Pearl, Dave Green Hill & Jim Alton disassembled it with some help from the BASA members. For anyone who thinks about towing it in the future, it tows great. I towed it from Sacramento with my 4 cylinder 3000# car and it does not have as much drag, is much more stable, and less affected by gusts from semi's than our club 1-26. It is noticably heavier though, I kept my speed at 55 and slower so I would have enough braking. I would not consider towing up or down the mountain without a more serious tow vehicle. I put all the miscellaneous pieces in the trailer. I will not be able to come out Sunday, but if you have enough people, consider reassembleing it. (and check the O2 bottle. I did not check to see if it got closed after we had it topped off.) Jim Alton ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mike-i green Subject: Field Manager Date: 28 Sep 1997 10:32:16 -0700 Hi Guys & Gals, It will be impossible for me to Field Manage on October 26. Could someone who has FM duty in January/March switch with me? I spent one week in the hospital with a case of Guillain-Barre syndrome getting discharged last Sunday. The symptoms of this affliction are numbness in the limbs sometimes affecting the whole body, occasionally requiring the use of a respirator. I have had a mild case so far, just my feet numb and fingers numb and tingling. I had five overnight IV treatments with "immune globulin" while in the hospital. I seem to be getting better slowly, however I am weak and my fingers and feet are still somewhat numb. 95% of patients make a full recovery but it may take a month or so for me. Have a great Octoberfest. Give my regards to all. Mike Green |---------------------------------------------------------------| | Dr. Mike I.
