I have to agree with Ryan on this thread. Hardbeats can be cool for driving, but is too predictable at times. Try FFWD on a foggy evening, real trip out. Well, from my perspective, ambient (and other electronic music) is wonderful driving music under the right conditions.... For example, Equinoxe (especially Equinoxe part V) by Jean-Michel Jarre is wonderful when the ground is covered by snow, and the sun is obnoxiously bright--it's great winter music.... It would also be cool to ski or snowboard to (not that I've ever been skiing or snowboarding). Perpetual Dawn by Orb would be cool if driving at sunrise.... Tangerine Dream's _Tangram_ is also good sunny (not Sunday) morning music.... Although _Riccochet_ and _Rubycon_ are better suited for dark, foggy nights.... _LeParc_ is good, clear evening music to drive to. Vangelis is good on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, right around the Breezewood or Bedford exits, as is Kitaro's _Light of the Spirit_...don't ask.... Anyone ever hear of Wavestar? Their album, _Moonwind_, is EXCELLENT early morning music (like 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.) to drive to...especially if the sky is clear.... I would absolutely KILL for a cd copy of that album.... Now THAT'S a cd that's on my "want list" FAR more than Aubrey.... (Nostalgic, you see....) If there's anyone out there who happens to have a copy of that, could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make me a copy???? Hey--speaking of which--there's a lot of "wants" and "for sales" for Orb and Orb-related (KLF, etc.) on this list, but does anyone know of a list for electronic music in general??? There is so much more out there from the 1970s and 1980s that's just as good--if not better--than Orb and FSOL and other ambient/electronica groups.... Unfortunately, much of it has gone out of print (like every single Synergy album--although I t think they are slowly coming back in print through some Internet-only outlet, but a helluva lot of good that does people like me who don't have access to the net...). I'm ESPECIALLY looking for albums put out by the Audion label (c. 1986 through 1989)--groups lke Synergy, Larajii, Wavestar, Gary Hughes, Emerald Web, etc.... "Montagne D'or" is my all time favorite. My senior year of highschool, I spent many evenings partying at this particular friends house. Every night when the party died down and was sober enough to drive (yet, still just a little bit silly feeling) I'd hop in my Saturn and throw in Orbvs. Montagne lasted almost exactly from his house to mine. When I got on the freeway, the song was still relaxing and quite. Halfway home the song would begin to pick up just as I was going around this sharp turn high on an overpass overlooking the city, the stars, and the moon. When I got off the highway and entered my neighboorhood, the beats would start to soar, and the loud explosion at the finale of the song would come just as I parked my car at home... the perfect driving experience. I'd also like to add the "bsotm" (aubrey mix) to my list... so chilled out. The biggest track on it was Impossible Object - standard technoish stuff. Third Eye recorded two subsequent albums both of which are very good but very different from the 1991 cd. AF is trancey and DofC is very melodic and is crescendo trance, sounds building/layered on top of each other. Both are excellent cds and well worth finding. (Copied from prior received email) Hi Dan. Before we started DigiBand, I did a lot of research in the same area. Here is the scoop. The RealAudio stream or file is created using a tool from RealNetworks. One of the things you can set on the stream is whether you want it to be recordable. If it is recordable, the RealPlayer Plus, and a future release of DigiBand Radio will allow you to save the streamed audio to a file. That's the good news. Now the bad news. Since providers get to control what is recordable, 99% of providers turn off this flag, so they do not allow you to record. I guess they are worried about protecting their copyrights or something. The only thing I've been able to come up with so far to work around this is to have a computer with 2 soundcards. Loop output from your default soundcard, to the input of the 2nd soundcard. While the stream is playing, use something to record the 2nd soundcard input as a .wav file. Then you'd have your file. This isn't much of a solution, but it is all you can do for now. There are a few things in the works that may make it better in several months. What in particular makes you want to be able to record ra files, and I'll see if there are some other solutions. >>There you go... ICQ however has ported itself to the mac horribly and would rather meet on dal.net or something... The method that will work for almost everyone is IRC, maybe dal.net - I think the harder problem is gonna be figuring out times! Someone earlier suggested we just make a channel on IRC and just go in whenever. THis seems like a pretty good idea to me... and on a more orbish note.. i heard the 40 min blue room today for the first time god, i think my life has changed. ;P - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Keith M. Hi, I was thinking today about how interesting I find those rockumentary-esque things about different bands. I wondered if there has been one produced yet. Perhaps in the U.K.? I guess the closest thing to that over here in the U.S. is that History of Rock-n-Roll thing that PBS did and interviewed LX. That's pretty pathetic. I realized that I know alot more about the formative years of other "bands" than I do about the orb. I guess that is why they're different. Are there any books about the orb? I looked for this info on a faq somewhere, but couldn't find a faq. Go to www.winamp.com and get 1.73. OPEN a file in Winamp1.73/GOTO:Options/Preferences/Output (just right click anywhere on Winamp and you will find Options) There you will see a TAB called "Output Device". Choose ".WAV file output (silent)". You will be able to tell it where to save the file. Then, press play, and it will play the entire song, but you won't hear anything. Once the song is over, you will end up with a HUGE .wav file in the folder you specified.
