My favourite songs were 'Popcorn' and the theme to Dr. Who (quite possible the first techno song ever?) The Orb were the first electronic group I really got into and it was about when I was 13 or 14, the summer before U.F.Orb was released. My best Orb experience was when I was waitng for a bus in the summertime a long time ago. I was lying on my back on a sunny clear blue skied day listening to O.O.B.E. That is when I realized how powerful their music is and I began to seek out any other music that was as intelligent as theres. The "dance" music I'd been exposed to before 1992 was basically of the New Wave/techno-pop genre (Erasure, New Order, Depeche Mode in their late 80s/early 90s phases), and I wasn't much into that stuff, though I did like a few things along those lines (and I'd *loved* early 80s New Wave way back when). Mostly, I was into electronics/synthesizers as used in "prog-rock" stuff (Yes, Pink Floyd) and in purely electronic "space-out" music (Tangerine Dream). The Orb (and particularly "A Huge Ever Growing Brain" off Adventures) really turned everything around for me. Techno in general has turned me into a CD-buying maniac, and has gotten me seriously into using electronics to make music (particularly the IDM kinda thing). And btw, I'm also 27. This is *way* off topic for the Orb list, but I had to add a small comment: Ever notice that Orbital sampled the 'sung' sound of the Martian laser cannons from this record for their track "Oolaa" off the first album? I love the way they did this, and think it's one of the best examples I've heard of a somewhat musically-abstract sample from another record used as the foundation for a new track. Ob Orb -- RE the "Live Vegas Mix" of "Toxygene," I think it's a pretty bad-sounding mix -- about the only really bad mix I've heard by them, I guess. I'm glad to have it, though, 'cos it shows they're 'human' (as does their take on "No Fun").... Now, far be it from me to be critical of anothers' work...but, it sounds a LOT like the garbage *I* do when I'm just "improvisizing"...except a lot longer! It wasn't a BAD album--don't get me wrong--but it wasn't as great as it was hyped up to be, IMHO. I STILL think FSOL's Lifeforms is a far better ambient album. One track--"Blue Calx," or something like that--actually stands out, and is hauntingly beautiful...I daresay...dreary (that's a good thing, in a sort of early 1980s, Joy Division-esque doom 'n' gloom sort of way). Do any of the other tracks actually have titles? I couldn't seem to find any.... Are his other albums like this? Another album that was hyped (but not on this list) that I didn't care one bit for was Moby's _Everything Is Wrong_.... As a result, I'm quite afraid to pick up anything else by him.... In the meantime, I'll stick with Orb and FSOL.... Now, there ARE a number of EXCELLENT ambient compilations out there that I've picked up over the' past year or so.... One is _Excursions into Ambient Groove, Vol 2_... another is something called _One A.D._.... The persistent rumor is that the Orb/LX remixed them, but if the album I have (Meddle remix) is any indicator, it's just a rumor. It's listenable, but it's nowhere near as clear or smooth as the Orb usually are.
