What a dub-plate (aka acetate) is is what you see the dj's spinning before a full release of the 12" in question. Usually made to test the waters. I'd been listening to it for a few years, and was ready to start listening to something else.. all the time I'd been listening to "gangsta rap", though, the main thing that atttacted me was the beats and grooves, etc, rather than the lyrics.. though I did listen to the lyrics.. Anyway, a friend of mine introduced me to Art of Noise and The Orb.. He put them in one day when we were riding around in his car, and soon after I wanted to borrow his CDs so that I could copy them (he had In Visible Silence and Who's Afraid by AON and Pomme Fritz & Orbus Terrarum by The Orb)... well, I did, and soon after I became a pretty avid listener of both groups... by the end of 1996, I bought a copy of u.f.orb and Ambient Collection for myself, and over the course of 1997, I picked up most Orb and AON releases (non-rare ones), and this year I finally picked up a CD copy of those Art of Noise and Orb albums that I copied off my friend back in 1996.. And, I'm 19.. And while I do listen to/watch MTV and M2 sometimes (generally, I dont like "MTV music". but sometimes they play something decent), and a lot of the "techno/ambient/electronic" groups that I listen to are ones that I was introduced to on MTV's AMP, I generally wasnt introduced to stuff by "regular" MTV.. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Mar 1998 11:29:23 EST From: "Chris Norton" Subject: (orb) Ages... I'm 27 and my first Orb experience was unusual... About 4 years ago I was flying back to Sydney, Australia (where I live) from the East Coast of the US. I had a 10hour stopover in LA. Rather than bumming round the airport I took a cab to a large nearby shopping mall recommended by the taxi dispatcher. I was idly wandering through a fairly stylish homewares shop when some unusual sounds caught my ear from the in-store CD player. The first track finished and the second began. I asked the sales assistant what it was - she showed me the 2CD UFOrb. I went straight upstairs to a small record shop and bought a copy for US$12 - I haven't seen the 2CD since! I have a lot to thank that taxi dispatcher for... What I had heard in the shop was Blue Room and Assassin off the second CD. UFOrb remains my fave Orb CD, with Majestic my fave track. I regularly drive out to the country and my UFOrb tape is a frequent companion. A couple of weeks ago, I had an interesting Orb experience - I had been sleeping out in the open at a bush campsite, and was woken by the sound of kookaburras laughing. After breakfast, hopped in the car and put in UFOrb...which was just at the beginning of Majestic with those darned kookaburras again. The Orb gets virtually nil airplay here in Australia - aside from Toxygene a couple of times when it came out I have heard very little... Oh, and I never have nor will watch MTV. Barely anyone here seems to have heard of the Orb, but two British people who I've recently given lifts to have eagerly pounced on that UFOrb tape... I have a lot to thank that LA taxi dispatcher for. I agree... I've been watching AMP for just about a year now, though unfortunately I feel like AMP has very quickly gone downhill in quality the last few months.. playing much more silly dance music, etc.. Thats one thing thats good about MTV's new channel, M2.. M2 seems to play quite a bit of the stuff played on AMP.. of course, its mixed in with various other stuff, but often times M2 plays blocks of certain genres, so you can see a bunch of AMP-type videos all at once.. (though, I've yet to see the best AMP video/song on M2 - "3/10th of the population" by We) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Mar 1998 23:19:24 -0600 From: hostile@starnetinc.com Subject: Re: (orb) MPG3 ---> CD (probably covered before but...) lemonkid@cjnetworks.com wrote: > > I have been researching buying and using a cdr to make audio cds, and to my > dismay to do this well at all you need a scsi source. a scsi cd rom to copy > audio cds and cd roms and a scsi hard drive or possibly scsi zip to convert mp3s > to wav files then to an audio cd..it seems that the cdr can be an ide or eide no > problem but the source for quality must be scsi....anyone else have any helpful > info about this....with the exception of the most recent machines most power macs > have scsi connections, do they not????the new g3 machines do not since they have > added a faster than 750MHz processor they downgraded most of the rest of the > machines hardware and switched to ide stuff to keep price competitive....the cd > mastering software is also very important when buying a cdr make sure you get the > most recent version of mastering software available.....if anyone else knows > more about this please add some info....I still plan on buying a cdr but now I > need to convert my cd rom etc. to scsi...which sucks since I have a brand new 24x > cd rom(ide that is)....a really good cdr copy of most of the orb stuff I don't > have would satisfy need for unobtainable orb goodies...what is the general > feeling on that as far as everyone else is concerned??????? > > lemonkid > \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ In reply to this, I purchased a ide drive 6 read 2 write and I totally love it. I know mine is legit because I bought it when it originally came out, including the bonus CD. At any rate, I wouldn't be surprised if they contracted with a US company to make the NTSC version of the video. The store might very well have marked it as an "import" because they got it from a foreign distributor, or because they were confused (like this never happens). Maybe U2 will break up soon... ;] That might ease the process. -grin- blueroom # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1998 12:37:20 EST From: LiquidW Subject: (orb) Re: (orbU2negativland guns bayonets knives brass nuckles...and a sub machinegun negativland is very intelligent , they knew everything they were doing with that , and U2 played right into their act.... I can't imagine why U2 did not want to release The ORB remixes of Numb. Numb is such a boring song that Alex could only improve the quality of the track with his 2 remixes. Maybe Alex included a "Bono suck my dick!" sample or something like that hehehehe... Hmm, they pay producers like Brian Eno & Flood to change their oldfashioned sound into someshing hip and progessive and then they don't want to release a remix by the godfathers of crazy music?!? Technically, of all the remixes of "Numb" that were promoed (I can think of at least four), only one was ever released commercially. The Perfecto and EBN remixes were only available as promos (though you could get the EBN one by recording from the videocassette), and two other remixes (one called "Gimme Some More Dignity Mix," I forget who did it, and the other being the Soul Assassins remix) appeared on their fan-club CD "Melon." The Soul Assassins remix was later released commecrially on a CD commemorating 104.9 XFM in England, and more recently on the "Last Night On Earth" CD-singles, but apart from that, no mixes of the song had been released commercially at all. The interesting thing about the Orb mixes is that they didn't even make it to a promo. - -- Adam J Weitzman, NewsEdge Corp. --- http://www.newsedge.com -- "In terms of legitimacy of competition, ice dancing makes professional wrestling look like the Boston Marathon." - Dave Barry # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Mar 1998 14:04:56 -0400 From: beRt d'Eon Subject: Re: (orb) Re: (orbU2negativland guns bayonets knives brass nuckles...and a sub machinegun At 12:37 PM 05/03/98 EST, you wrote: >negativland is very intelligent , they knew everything they were doing with >that , and U2 played right into their act.... >Negativland kicks ass.... One of the problems with the U2 album is actually due to the person who did the artwork for the "record" (this was back when you could still buy vynil). The original artwork was the image of the bomber/aircraft with U.2.. That probably would not have gotten them so much attention. The band and the artist just decided that taking out the DOTS between the letters looked better. The problem now was that it was confusing people into thinking it was a U2 album. Of course there was still problems with the music, but the artwork was a big contributing factor. Trak 3 - NUMB (Gimme Some More Dignity Mix) Remixed by Rolo and Rob D Trak 6 - NUMB (The Soul Assasins Mix) Remixed by Soul Assasins Nick Angel at Island just describes it as a real dark Hip-Hop mix of Numb with DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill. Have you noticed that anything that's not exactly Cypress Hill all the way ends up being called the "Soul Assasins Mix". I'm not sure if he was referring to the ORB remix or not, but Nick did mention this about another NUMB remix that was made. "Another (mix of Numb), perhaps because the remixers interpreted their breif a shade liberally, didn't make the cut." The Rolo mix was made just because they wanted a more trancey version. ******************************************************* * Take a break from the 90s visit our 80s Music Stop * * http://www.ug.cs.dal.ca/~swim/80stop.html * ******************************************************* # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1998 15:16:17 -0800 From: toxygene@juno.com Subject: (orb) Ages I've been a lurker for over a year now.
